Yankees are in town, Chipper’s pant-legs are down

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Yankees are in town to face the Bravos, so it’s standing-room only on a Tuesday afternoon at Dark Star. Gorgeous weather, and the Yankees always attract nice scenery, if you know what I mean.

But it’s a skeleton crew of pinstripers that made the trip over from Tampa, a lineup that doesn’t include an A-Rod or Jeter – or even an Andruw.

They did bring the starting outfield of Brett Gardner, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson, but I believe most fans would prefer to see the starting infield, no? And Cameron Diaz, who’s been showing up to see her guy Alex Rodriguez play.

"Mighty" Matt Young is in right field today as Heyward gets a rest. Young is hitting .333, with four hits and three RBIs.

"Mighty" Matt Young is in right field today as Heyward gets a rest. Young is hitting .333, with four hits and three RBIs.

Andruw Jones is a Yankee now, but he’s not here. We’ll have to wait to chat with ‘Druw on Friday when the teams play again in Tampa.

Anyway, they’re here, the joint is filling up quickly, and if you get the YES Network, you can watch the game live at 1 p.m. It’s also to be replayed on MLB Network tonight at 7.

Jurrjens is starting for the Braves against Freddy Garcia, with scheduled Braves relief to come from closer Craig Kimbrel, who’s been a bit up-and-down so far, Peter Moylan, Scott Proctor, and new Atlanta graybeards Scott Linebrink and George Sherrill.

The Braves lineup has but four regulars – Martin Prado, Dan Uggla, Alex Gonzalez, and DHing Chipper Jones. The Braves get a whole lot smaller today in right field, where Matt Young is playing in place of Jason Heyward, who has a day off. (That’s going from 6-5 and 250 to 5-7 and 175.)

Braves lineup vs. Yankees

  1. Martin Prado LF
  2. Jordan Schafer CF
  3. Chipper Jones DH
  4. Dan Uggla 2B
    Braves Mets Spring Baseball

Jurrjens starts today as the Braves begin their third time through the starting rotation.

  5. Eric Hinske 1B
  6. Alex Gonzalez SS
  7. David Ross C
  8. Matt Young RF
  9. Shawn Bowman 3B

♣  Chipper breaking hearts: That is, with his decision to go back to the ankle-length pants. Based on responses I’ve received, a whole lot of fans were digging the old-school look Chipper sported for all of about two weeks.

He said he was going to go with that that look all year, with the low-top spikes because he’d blown out his knee wearing hi-tops in his rookie year and last summer. He said the first day of camp that he’d rather have an ankle injury than hurt the knee again, so he was ditching the hi-tops.

Low-tops, high blue socks and pants just below the knees – folks were e-mailing and Tweeting and blogging about how much they loved Hoss going retro at 38, looking like a kid again, at least uniform-wise.

Only problem is, once he started playing games in the low-tops, Chipper wasn’t comfortable. So he quickly reverted to the modern, pants-to-the-shoes look with his hi-top cleats. He made it clear that first day of camp, he hates the look of hi-top cleats and pants at the knees. So that’s not an option.

It’s either the low pants and hi-top shoes, or the high pants and low-top shoes. And since the low-tops don’t feel right, it’s back to the long pants.

(I’m with those of you who preferred his old-school look, but that’s because I just never have gotten used to guys stretching out the elastic — or removing it altogether — from bottom of pants’ legs and wearing them resting atop their shoes. Alas, Chipper is back to that look, like almost everyone else on the team.)

Oh, as for actual on-the-field news about Chipper: He’s DHing today after having yesterday off. No, it’s not a sign that his surgically repaired left knee is giving him any problems.

Rather,  Fredi Gonzalez told him he hadn’t intended to play him so much this early, and was pulling back a bit to give him more rest this week. Chipper played third base in three of four games before having Monday off when the team took the long bus ride to Jupiter.

“Fredi came up to me and said, ‘I didn’t realize you’ve been playing so much,’” Jones said. “He said, ‘I’m playing you like an A-ball guy.’ So we’re trying to take it easy right now.”

He’ll probably play third base tomorrow against the Cardinals, take Thursday off, then DH on Friday against the Yankees in Tampa.

Chipper's old-school look (high pants, high socks, low-top shoes) from the first two weeks of camp didn't last long. Veteran says he didn't feel comfortable in the low cleats, and isn't going to wear pants high with hi-tops. (Jason Getz photo/AJC)

Chipper told me when camp opened that he only needed about 40 at-bats to get ready for the season. He’s way ahead of that pace, with 20 at-bats before today, fourth-most among the Braves behind only rookie Freddie Freeman (24), trying-to-make-the-team Jordan Schafer (24), and getting-used-to-new-position Martin Prado (23).

♣ Schafer’s chances: Had this question directed to me on the blog a couple days ago, from screen name Summer Of 91: “So how many spots are open? because I thought schafer and mather were locks in place of matty d and omar infante- leaving one more spot on the bench(lucas imo) and 1 more bpen spot. So am I wrong on that?”

My response, in case you missed it in the comments section, with couple more points added:

Summer of 91: I’m not sure why you thought Schafer was a “lock” to make opening-day roster, when no one has ever said, indicated or even hinted that to be the case.

What most of us have written/said is that if he were to have a great spring, and if McLouth fell on his face, then the Braves could go with Schafer as the center fielder. So far, McLouth has done the direct opposite of falling on his face.

(McLouth has played extremely well, hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and a .636 OBP in seven games. Granted, it’s way early. But that’s where he is so far, doing everything the Braves could possibly have hoped for to this point.)

Another way Schafer might make the team out of camp would be if Chipper were looking real shaky for opening day, and it seemed Prado would be at third base to start the season. Again, so far, at least, that hasn’t been the case.

If Chipper is ready at third and if McLouth looks read to handle center — so far, both of those boxes are checked — then Schafer won’t have a spot in the lineup, and the Braves would presumably want him to go to Triple-A to play every day rather than be on the bench in the majors.

Given that he’s missed much of the past two seasons due to injury, and really needs to play. And the Braves, if they need a backup center fielder, could turn to versatile Joe Mather, if he makes the team (and remember, he’s out of options), or also-versatile Matt Young, who can play second base and the outfield (and also played third base for four innings the other day).

Mather’s more of a corner infielder/outfielder, but he’s played some center field, even in the majors for Tony La Russa, and could handle the position on a temporary basis.

Just speculating here, it’s easy to see a scenario where the Braves have Schafer go play for a month or two in Triple-A, then bring him up as a fourth outfielder or have him read to step in at any of the outfield positions in the case of an injury.

♣ OK, let’s go ahead and get this posted. I’m doing a separate on Ed Lucas, who’s off to a strong start in his bid for a utility job. Also talked to Kenshin Kawakami — and to Frank Wren about the Japanese pitcher — and will write a note later. Kawakami could get in his first game later this week. Until he pitches in games, I wouldn’t expect trade offers. Braves need him to pitch and need for another team or two to have a pitching need arise….

(It’s only March 8, but soon we’ll start looking more closely at these decisions, since they’ll be made a little earlier than normal because opening day is March 31, nearly a week earlier than most recent seasons.)

Oh, and one other thing: Mike Minor and Brandon Beachy will pitch 3 innings apiece in the “B” game tomorrow against Cardinals at 10:30 a.m., on a backfield here at Dark Star. Rodrigo Lopez is starting the regular game. Believe me, there is no significance in that….

♣ OK, rest of this is music talk, so don’t read past this and go straight to comments if you don’t care to hear any opinining on music.

New R.E.M. in stores today, gonna pick it up tonight after I’m done working. For those fans of Hayes Carll’s last CD, get his new one. Outstanding. Played it on drive home last night, along with the strong new Dropkick Murphys CD.

Went on a music-buying binge last week when I was home, and got three terrific new discs, the recent releases from Social Distortion, P.J. Harvey, The Twilight Singers and the Johnny Cash Bootleg Vol. II, two-CD set Memphis to Hollywood. Stellar stuff, son.

Let’s close with one of the best songs off the new Social D, and you can hear it here.

“GIMME THE SWEET AND LOWDOWN” by  Social Distortion

It was a moonlight mishap
You lost your party hat
Seems your lifestyle ain’t so worthwhile after all
A heavy-hearted taxi ride
Then a walk on the wild side
Did your guardian angel let you down?
Gonna lay low and play it straight
It’s time to rejuvenate
Gonna kick start your heart until you come around

I can tell you now; you’ve really gotten the blues
I can tell you now; that I’ve walked in your shoes
Gimme the sweet and lowdown

You better get outta the way
It’s history made the hard way
From a hero to a zero once again
Ain’t no time for vanity
Or this insanity
You’re maladjusted and now you’re busted once again

I can tell you now; it comes as no surprise
I can tell you now; by that look in your eyes
Gimme the sweet and lowdown

You’re looking kinda punch drunk
Cuz that’s the way you strut your stuff
With a swing and a swagger down the road you go
You shoulda made a better choice
And listened to your inner voice
You gotta get right or get left, don’t ya know

I can tell you now; it’s the peak of bad news
I can tell you now; that I’ve walked in your shoes
Gimme the sweet and lowdown
The sweet and lowdown
Gimme the sweet – the sweet and lowdown

We live in the far west mountains on NC, near the “tail of the dragon”, so satellite is our only option. Baseball coverage makes DirectV the only choice for us plus it’s satellite is slightly higher on the horizon so the signal is better over the mountains and trees.

I personally, can’t stand the “baggy pj’s” look. There was a day when players wore the uniforms with pride. The players that show socks standout now and look like a classic baseball player.
