Hanson debuts vs. Houston, Kawakami set to arrive

(Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien today.)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Greetings from our spring training home away from home – Osceola County Stadium – where the Astros are playing their first home game of the Grapefruit League schedule. The sun came out after a downpour greeted our arrival this morning. We appreciate it. I’m sure Tommy Hanson, who makes his spring debut today, does as well.

Somehow, inexplicably, this is the Braves only trip here all spring, only 10 miles down the road from Disney. Hm….The Astros come to Braves camp three times this spring, but the Braves? They’ll be going to Jupiter three times. But hey, lucky for me I get to make this trip to balance out tomorrow’s jaunt to Fort Myers.

Hanson pitches two scoreless vs. Astros Tuesday

Hanson pitches two scoreless vs. Astros Tuesday

Speaking of long trips…news of the morning was that Kenshin Kawakami is scheduled to arrive in Orlando tonight from his native Japan after missing the first two weeks of camp with visa issues.

He’s to get his first workout in tomorrow morning in Braves camp. Those who aren’t traveling tomorrow to play the Red Sox will stay back and work out at Disney.

The Braves are looking for trade partners for Kawakami and hoping more teams enter the picture (with a little more cash) as their pitching needs become clearer during the spring. Kawakami is making $6.7 million in the final year of his three-year contract after going 1-10 last year.

Sherrill working on sinker/change

Reliever George Sherrill’s issues against right-handers last year for the Dodgers have been well-documented. The disparity is pretty eye-popping – left-handers hit only .192 off him and right-handers pretty well walloped him at .427.

I just struck up a conversation with him this morning over his crossword. He was kind enough to put it down, and he gave some insight into what he’s doing to improve his results against right-handers. He wants to become more than the lefty specialist he was for the Dodgers last year.

Sherrill is working on a sinker (two-seam fastball) and changeup to use against right-handers this year. Those two pitches are ones he quit throwing back in 2006 when he said he lost a feel for them.

“Facing righties, the first pitch would be up and away,” Sherrill said. “The second pitch, I’d overcorrect and it’d be cutting down and in to a righty. It was this drastic change, and all of a sudden I’m behind 2-0 and then I’ve got to come back with four-seamers. So from that point on I just started throwing four-seamers.”

As a closer for the Orioles Sherrill relied mainly on his four-seamer and slider.

He said he threw four or five sinkers in his outing on Monday (he loaded the bases on two singles and a walk vs. the Astros but got out of the inning on a double-play grounder by lefty Michael Bourn). He isn’t getting the results with it he wants yet, but that’s what spring training is for, to work on new pitches and get comfortable.

“I found grips that work,” Sherrill said. “It’s just a matter of getting used to the timing and making sure that I’m not making it do stuff.”

And in case you’re wondering if he still has the magic against left-handers, Astros 23-year-old catcher Jason Castro got a taste when he struck out looking vs. Sherrill on Monday.

“With the kid, (Brian) McCann just told me he asked him if he had faced me before, and (Castro) said no,” Sherrill said. “(McCann) was like ‘Good luck. I’ve faced him I don’t know how many times and haven’t seen a pitch yet.’ I threw a slide step and it was really right down the middle and it just froze him.”

(McCann is 0-for-2 with a strikeout against Sherrill by my exhaustive research.)

Musings from Jones on Jim Thome

ESPN’s Buster Olney was in the house this morning, over at Braves camp and asked Chipper Jones for some thoughts on veteran slugger and eternally nice guy Jim Thome…And Jones gave some colorful stuff that I couldn’t resist sharing. First of all he said when the Twins and Braves played in interleague play last year, both Jones and Thome were convinced they’d retire. At that point, Jones said he figured there was “zero chance” either one of them would come back.

But yet the 40-year-old Thome is back in camp with the Twins and here’s Chipper at almost 39 trying to come back from knee surgery (he’s in the lineup at DH for the third straight day).

Thome and Jones "grannies" of the game?

Thome and Jones "grannies" of the game?

“I don’t know if we were tired or fed up or just in a bad place mentally,” Jones said. “It sounded like two old grannies just complaining on the porch step in their rockers, just tired of the whole thing. But it’s amazing what a good year by him and a playoff run by us and whatnot can do to change your mind.”

Jones said he’s known Thome since the two played on rival teams in Triple-A, Jones for a prospect-studded Richmond Braves team and Thome for the Charlotte Knights back in 1993. Get a load of one of their “meetings.”

“My first brawl in professional ball was against Charlotte when him and Manny (Ramirez) and all those guys were in Charlotte,” Jones said. “And he and I came across each other in the melee and next thing I know I was pinned up against the backstop, with my face up against the netting. And I look over and my mom and dad are like three rows away from me and had the look of horror in their eyes. It was just one of those moments where you cry for help because once he got his big paws on me, I was done.”

At this point, he breaks into laughter.

“But we’ve been, I think, mutual admirers ever since,” Jones said. “We’ve certainly had a lot of knockdown drag-outs when he was in Philly and the World Series in 95 (with the Indians). There for a while we were the only two guys who really wore our uniforms with our socks showing. Not a better guy on the planet I wish him the best.”

And for his latest: Jones is looking to get three at-bats today in his third straight game at DH. When asked this morning when he might get in on defense, he said “end of the week.”

If he were in the field today he might only get two at-bats, but he doesn’t feel like he works up much of a sweat, simply DHing and wants more action.

BRAVES LINEUP:

Lineup watch: Joe Mather makes his first start of spring at third base today. The new utility bench player can play either corner outfield or infield spot.

1. Jordan Schafer LF

2. Nate McLouth CF

3. Chipper Jones DH

4. Dan Uggla 2B

5. Jason Heyward RF

6. Joe Mather 3B

7. Freddie Freeman 1B

8. J.C. Boscan C

9. Diory Hernandez SS

Pitching: Tommy Hanson, Jonny Venters, Stephen Marek, Michael Broadway, Jairo Asencio, Eric O’Flaherty.

We also have to consider if they do Money in the Bank again…haven’t heard either way, but the card is starting to fill up…and the question is, who would be the candidates for MitB? I believe there were 8 guys last year…so…just off the top of my head:

If you know how many miles it is, you can use this calculator to calculate average speed + time to figure out how long it’d take to get there:

Great piece here by Joe Posnanski about contrasting characteristics of Jeff Francoeur: http://joeposnanski.si.com/2011/03/01/frenchy-and-hope/

Joe says, “He is the most joyous guy out there” and “He is a corner outfielder who has proven — unquestionably and repeatedly — that he cannot hit well enough to be a regular in the Major Leagues.”

From the STL Post-Dispatch concerning Carpenter:

“JUPITER, Fla. — Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter walked off the mound with two outs in the third inning today after sustaining an apparent injury, although he didn’t seem to be in serious discomfort.

Head athletic trainer Greg Hauck approached the mound, with manager Tony La Russa not far behind and Carpenter departed without much discussion, having already thrown 32 pitches against the Florida Marlins.

Carpenter, who fanned two, walked one and gave up one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings, likely was going to face only one more hitter anyway.

The 35-year-old Carpenter is the probable Opening Day starter for the Cardinals, who already have lost co-ace Adam Wainwright for the season with Tommy John elbow surgery.”

Yeah, but without Carpenter and Wainwright, they’d basically be giving up for this season.

And he’s got a $1M buyout next year, so it’s not like he’s going to cost him a lot next year. The only thing I can think is if they know they can’t afford to re-sign him and would be asking for inexpensive young talent in return. But I would think only a team that feels he could put them over the top this year would be willing to give that in return.

timthebrave, I love chatting about Francoeur for the exact reasons Posnanski lays out in his piece. He is just an intriguing player. Lots of personality, lots of energy, lots of effort, I think he wants to be a great player, very “athletic.” But unfortunately for all of us that root for him and want him to be a great player, he just probably doesn’t, never had and never will have the skills to be an everyday major leaguer. His lack of skill was there long before the Braves decided to send him to the minors. He just never had command of the strikezone. That’s a skill as important as hitting for power or speed or throwing well.

GT Alum – From what I’ve read, it all got started by several New York sports writers who indicated that the Yankees might have an interest in him. No one has approached the Cards about it, but some sports writers in St Louis asked him about it over the weekend. That’s when he said he would waive his no-trade clause – if asked.

Also: “The Cardinals also must decide after this season whether to assume the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner’s $15 million option for 2012. Carpenter did not say whether any trade acceptance would be conditional on a new team assuming the option.”

I thought it was strange giving Holiday that huge contract with Albert’s time being so short instead of going out and getting more pitching – especially since even with Albert, they have gone to the Series once – and that with a barely .500 record.

Apparently all that power and offense hasn’t helped them and the extra pitching might have.

Robert, I think Francoeur is also an illustration that baseball players don’t come in with a blank slate and to a large degree can’t simply be coached to be great, at least not by the time they are drafted and playing pro ball. They come into it with certain skills. Yes, to some degree coaches and a player’s discipline and work habits can improve skills enough for the player to take some drastic steps. But those things can only take players so far. Command of the strikezone and plate discipline are a lot like other skills, such as power or a good throwing arm. A player either has it or he doesn’t, for the most part.

Yes, every now and then a coach or some work by the player can improve plate discipline and command of the strikezone in a player enough so that, if things line up just right and a player has the right skill set, the player can put together some good or even great seasons. (See Sammy Sosa.) But saying Francoeur’s problems are just a matter of coaching or a lack of discipline or work on his part, is overlooking the fact that Francoeur never has had discipline and command of the strikezone at any level, at any place, under any coach, ever. When you see that, you know that Francoeur’s struggles very likely have nothing to do with his coaching, coachability, desire, work ethic, etc. It’s more to do with what he came into pro ball with and without.

“Robert, I think Francoeur is also an illustration that baseball players don’t come in with a blank slate and to a large degree can’t simply be coached to be great”

There’s a good bit of truth to this. “Moneyball” talked about it – the way the scouts would always dream of what a player some big strapping would become if only he could learn strike zone discipline – and how unrealistic that hope is in most cases

Some of it comes down to baseball smarts – some guys have it, some dont. On the other hand, some of it, like executing fundamental plays, is mostly practice.

Guy flubs a bunch of ground balls – he shouldnt be playing golf until he’s fielded 1000 grounders cleanly fifty nights in a row

What I dont want though is for this to be used as an excuse to absolve coaches and managers at the higher levels of baseball from repsonsibility. They can teach, and moreover, they can reward and punish – in other words, as manager, maybe I cant singlehandedly change Frenchy’s poor habits this late in his careerm but I can certainly let him know he wont be playing if he has a three to one K to BB ratio or if he cant lay down a bunt

Well, and it seems like Francoeur’s had so much success at every level that he’s had a hard time adjusting to the fact that he’s not successful at this level. Someone who has to adjust and focus on improving his game at every level naturally does that if he reaches this level. For someone who’s always had success, I could see it being a difficult adjustment.

GTAlum, I might believe that were true if he had success in the skills relating to plate discipline and command of the strikezone at any level. But he’s not been able to adjust that aspect of his game at any level and he’s not had success at any level as far as these skills go.

I don’t think him not being successful at this level that is causing him to not be successful. That makes little sense.

Robert, here’s the problem with your argument: Bobby Cox was not Francoeur’s manager throughout the minors. He was not his manager in New York. He was not his manager in Texas. Yet, in all those places, Francoeur lacked enough skill in the area of plate discipline to be a good hitter. How do you explain that? How do you explain that he’s played under a variety of managers and coaches, even working on his own with some of the best hitting coaches and players, only to more or less have the same basically plate discipline as he’s had his entire pro career? Could it be that plate discipline is largely a skill that can’t be drastically coached up? Much like you aren’t likely to turn Mark Lemke into Ryan Howard, no matter how much you coach him up, you aren’t likely to turn Francoeur into Chipper Jones. It very likely has nothing to do with coaching or desire; it’s about skills.

Well, after playing countless amounts of games, I have come to learn that it depends what the pitch is, where your hot zones are, whether you’re righty v lefty, AND batting stance seems to factor greatly…

For example, I noticed when going from a straight up type stance to a Soriano slight crouch stance, I better launched low balls in the K-zone…

GT Alum

When I was talking about success at every level, I meant end results. He was hitting well enough to be a top player at other levels, so he likely never had that much pressure to improve his plate discipline. He might’ve had coaches tell him he could improve his game that way, but his ability to continue to play the game didn’t hinge on it.

And I was saying that the fact that he hasn’t really had that kind of pressure to make adjustments and develop those skills before is what’s hurting him now. Most players need to have skills in addition to tools, so they’re used to developing those skills. Sounds like Frenchy’s always gotten by on his tools, so he’s not used to building those skills.

If Francoeur had a quarter of Chipper’s plate discipline, he wouldn’t be shifting from team to team.

Truly, when Chipper retires, the Braves need to sign him to coach young hitters on their plate discipline and commanding the strike zone. There’s certainly a lot of temperament that goes into goes into plate discipline, but Chipper could be very good with some talented kids who need to control their free-swinging ways.

my concern is binding ourselves where we can’t keep the talent we’ve brought up through our system. Like the Cards find themselves in.

Yeah, but any team would be hard-pressed to be able to hold onto all of their homegrown talent when one of those players is a superstar who apparently will command $30M per. I don’t think the Braves could do that with their current budget.

GT Alum and Jeff R, but I think the problem with that theory is that Francoeur has realized now for 4 or 5 years that he needs to improve is plate discipline to be a good major league hitter. He’s played under different coaches, he’s went to coaches on his own to work on this, he’s played with some pretty disciplined hitters like Chipper and it still hasn’t improved for him. His improvement now hinges on him developing this skill and he hasn’t been able to after 4 or 5 years. That’s a good indication that it’s not simply a matter of him not working and developing the skill. It seems he’s done all he can to try to develop the skill. It’s not likely a matter of needing a coach or better coaching or needing to work or try harder or needing to be more coachable. It’s more a matter of plate discipline not being something that can be coached up, to a large degree. Again, it’s like any other skill–hitting homeruns for instance. No matter how much you coach players up, they are only capable of doing what they are capable of.

Carroll or DOB,

I’ve got a beef with Fredi.

I’m not really thrilled with where Fredi is planning to hit Jason Heyward. He’s going to have a .400 OBP and that will suck to have him hitting in front of Alex Gonzalez making a ton of outs. He should be hitting at the top of the lineup where the Braves can drive him in and take advantage of his excellent and agressive baserunning ability. What’s going to happen is pitchers will see Heyward in the box and Gonzalez on deck and Heyward will barely get a sniff of a strike. He’s a patient hitter already and with pitchers working around him he’s going to have a ton of walks (and intentional walks).

Not sure if Fredi is a “veteran lover” or what, but if Bobby Cox would hit Heyward 2 or 3, don’t know why the younger, more sabermetric saavy Fredi would make this mistake, putting low OBP McLouth in a position to get so many more at bats than Heyward. Not only will pitchers take the bat out of Heyward’s hands because of the lack of protection but he’ll get fewer at bats during the season if he’s hitting sixth as opposed to second or third. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Can one of you guys ask Fredi why he would want to reduce Heyward’s opportunities to swing the bat? When healthy he is the best hitter on this team.

Not having played in a few weeks, I can’t be completely certain, but off the top of my head, you change who you control on the bases w/ the face buttons (X, O, ^, [])

What you would do if say you want the lead guy to go 1b to 3b or 2b to home but only advance the back guy 1 base is to hit the button to control the lead guy after the pitch is thrown and then use the right analog stick and move it to the right to keep him moving around 3b and then home

What I do…
as soon as i know it is a hit, I send the runner from second straight to home, and hit the o button (to select the runner at 1st and then the left arrow to make him run to 3rd)

using the D-pad is way easier to run.

Report: Mets need another loan

Days after the New York Mets acknowledged obtaining a loan from Major League Baseball to address liquidity issues, the team’s embattled owners are desperately searching for another bank loan to cover basic operating expenses, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.

MLB and the ballclub are “exerting strong pressure” on JPMorgan to provide additional money until a minority ownership partner can be secured to infuse cash, the Post reported. Reports indicate the Mets already have $430 million in bank loans, plus the $25 million borrowed in November and another $50 million previously borrowed from MLB.

Principal owner Fred Wilpon and his family also are defendants in a $1 billion lawsuit brought by the trustee trying to recover funds for victims of convicted swindler Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.
Wilpon announced his intention to sell 20 to 25 percent of the ballclub to raise cash. Steve Greenberg, hired by the family to locate a minority partner, since has said a higher percentage could be sold, but not a controlling interest.

Mets owners have said they are pursuing avenues of raising money beyond selling a portion of the team, and trying to secure an additional lone is one avenue to achieve that.

The Post quoted one source saying JPMorgan “believe[s] the Mets still have a capacity to borrow,” despite their existing debt load and the pending litigation. Another source told the newspaper: “Are you kidding me? You don’t lend into a distressed situation. This is a very risky loan.”

JPMorgan is also being sued by Irving Picard, the trustee for Madoff victims, who is seeking $6.4 billion. Picard claims the institution should have known that Madoff was perpetrating fraud. The firm denies the allegations.

Adam Rubin covers the Mets for ESPNNewYork.com. You can follow him on Twitter.

McFann – Well, if that lack of ice cream (and the Kiss cd’s) truly is what turned Robert into the human parody we see here all the time, then Ice Cream for all should be the norm – just to be safe.

The same way I explain how the Braves won “x” number of Cox in a season with Cox managing – i.e. – they wouldve won “x+10″ if Cox hadnt been managing

If a guy had a career year under Cox, then his career year couldve been even better

“Robert, here’s the problem with your argument: Bobby Cox was not Francoeur’s manager throughout the minors. He was not his manager in New York. He was not his manager in Texas”

Cox was Frenchy’s first big league manager – Once he allowed Frenchy to be his undisciplined and whiney self without suffering any consequence, no future big league manager could hope to do so – Frenchy would simply hate them.

Heyward wont be batting sixth long.

Fredi’s offseason talk and his early spring lineup are catering to Nate McLouth’s confidence and Chipper Jones’ ego

The right guys will bat in the right places in the order

And it will happen before game 140 – which is about how long Cox’s malfunctioning brain took to process such information

You’ll never change from the arrogant, idiotic, obsessive compulsive, bore with the Bobby Cox fixation you’ve proven yourself to be for these many years. “Entire universe of baseball players, managers, GM’s executives coaches, and pundits past and present almost unanimously agree Bobby was one of the greatest managers of all time.”

No, they dont.

The fact that the guys who belong to baseball’s good ole boys club will make some innocuous remark that sounds on the surface like a complement is twisted by the Atlanta media into this idea that everyone worships Cox

It’s bullhockey

Just like all those guys who give the old man lip service “oh i’d love to play for him” – but signed elsewhere

Pay attention to what they DO, not what they SAY

And none of the managers does what Cox did – oh they may say all kinds of smarm – but aint none of them emulating Donk

Even Fredi – he said some things about how some things wouldnt change much. The Atlanta press immediately jumped in and proclaimed him to be Cox 2.0

But in reality, things are being DONE very differently – no matter what malarkey they say

Robert

JEEZ ROBERT!!!

Are you still harping on Bobby Frickin Cox????? He ain’t the manager any more. Don’t you have something else you can talk about?

Most of us realize what a treasure we had for many years with Bobby. You don’t agree. We get it. Most of us also realize how fortunate that we are to have Fredi Gonzalez to replace Bobby. Hopefully you realize the same.

But eventually, if you have half a brain, you’ll admit that FG is more similar to BC than he is different.

I log on, go to the last page; and your ranting about BC and arguing with Lew about him. Are you for real???

Now, I am calm. I apologize if I have offended your sensitivities. I do strive to the Da Sensitive One. But c’mon man, can’t you just let it go. For your own good.

As Bones McCoy would say, “MY GOD, man, I’m just an old country doctor!!”

I’ve had my 24″-wheeler for about 8 or 9 years, I guess…prob’ly out grew it 3 years ago, and haven’t done much riding over the last two years. But I’ve got money from working now, and am really thinking about buying it. Only weird part will prob’ly be that this bike has no hand breaks. Not sure if this link has been posted (or how old it actually is), but it’s kind of scary how much “love” the Braves are getting from all the pundits.

http://msn.foxsports.com/video/MLB?vid=2c58adb5-28cc-4044-95b7-8a0c81da892d&from=foxsports/mlb/home_gallery

Obviously Buster Olney (ESPN), likes the Braves. Foxsports with the above link, thinks they’re 2nd only because the phillies are so good, and si.com had a nice story on why the Braves will keep up with the Phillies.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/ted_keith/03/01/braves.spring.training/index.html

I’m no scout by any means, but Brown’s bat looks slow as molasses to me. In all the highlights I’ve seen of him, his swing looks like it takes place under water. Am I the only one?

Hillbilly, I haven’t seen much of Brown. Just purely looking at his minor league numbers, it looks like he just started to take advantage of his size the last couple of years. He’s never been extremely disciplined but I think he’ll eventually be okay. He doesn’t have awful discipline but he lacks it just enough to be a fairly easy out for major league hitters. It seems though that he’s not ready yet to step in and become a very good hitter. I think he’ll merely be adequate this season.

Replacing Werth’s bat is a problem, as Lew says.

The Phils, as we’ve discussed here before, need to stay as well.

Gwinnett may have the deapest pitching staff in the history of minor leagues this year. Braves will be able to reload after trades/injuries for sure this season. Now we just need to have McLouth and/or Schaeffer keep it up, and make sure the bench is deep and ready to go. Let’s play ball!

PTown – I’ve never had trouble with Priority Mail. The Post Office is notorious for taking circuitous routes to get to their elbow, so maybe that’s what it is.

We used to live about 30 blocks from the Electric Company in ST. Pete, yet the P.O. would ship all the mail across the Bay to Tampa and then send it back over for delivery. Never figured out why.

Ralighbraves – I appreciate it. Transplant sent me a lot of grits and I even had someone send me Black Eyed peas (I can get them up here now) and DBack Mac (where is he these days?) sent me some homemade wine and some veggies he canned. Good stuff and definitely appreciated.

Prado had me fooled because I’ll admit when I first saw him I thought he was a good bench player , nothing more. Man was I wrong about him and I’m glad because he is an all-star and team player who keeps the clubhouse loose. Yeah I got my Uggla player t-shirt a couple weeks ago, already wore it poudly a couple times around the Chicagoland area. My top 5 in no particular order are: Uggla, Heyward, Chipper, BMac, and Huddy.

AT … I just read an article about how disposal of hydraulic fracturing waste water may be contributing to increase in earthquake activity. As usual with all environmental science, a lot of speculation and not much data.

On the other hand, the New Madrid fault is over-due to pop. The stuff up in GreenBriar could be a precursor to a big earth quake.

For those of you who have never heard of the New Madrid fault, the last time it popped in 1812, it (allegedly) caused the Mississippi River to run backwards, and it did change the course of the Mississippi.

Fargo – No, it’s my profession, but I have treated it like a hobby here on the blog. I give away a lot of art and prints to the Denizens.

Time varies. The Johnny Cash portrait took the better part of 200 hours (it’s almost surreal sometimes – you stare at it for hours and you get to thinking it looks nothing like who you’re drawing. All paintings have a full tonal drawing underneath.

Paintings take between 40for a small one ) and a couple hundred hours (for a big one, but I can work 14 hours a day here at home,so it’s no big deal (that can reduce it to two weeks working that long every day). Each piece takes what time it takes until I’m happy with it. Deadlines have lead to drying art in the oven or putting it in front of a fan for a day or two to dry it in time for shipping.

I think this is show or tell day for SCOTT’s comeback. The BRAVES are only going to go with the knife solution for so long. Ever once in awhile ‘TOMMY JOHN’ is unsuccessful. Describing the removed tendon as “yellow mush” is not the everyday comment from a physician performing that surgery. I do hope for PROCTOR’s sake that he brings it today. The Braves have a lot of guys that play that way which is why it’s so easy to like this team and want them to do well. Prado, Uggla, BMac, Heyward, Hudson just to name a few. I think another big thing with this team which I believe is huge for success is team chemistry. These guys play for each other, there are no egos in the clubhouse. You saw a guy like Hinske take less money and resign with the Braves instead of his hometown Brewers which says a lot about how he felt about this team. Team chemistry goes a long way and I bet the Braves have much more than the Phillthies and in the end it will bring the N.L. East crown back to Atlanta.

At Dark Star if you want autogrpahs arrive early do not carrry a bag with you. If you don’t carry a bag you will get in faster, if you do they will “check” the bags. When I went I always walked down to the left of the Braves dugout where it opens up and you can walk to the field from the seats there is a door for various people. That is the place occasionaly players will open it up and start signing or you can get players coming in and out of the dugout. Hey Lew, speaking of BB King, he is playing out here the day after I come back from my San Fran Braves trip. Ill be going to see him April 27th.
He aint no spring chicken anymore so I gotta take advantage of a chance to see him play live.

Lew – so I guess you don’t want to hear me complain about it getting below freezing last night (31) breaking up our string of gorgeous weather…by better 1/2 was complaining the highs have been knocked down 10 degrees from last week only expecting mid 60’s

Why not put KK in middle relief. He seemed to pitch well for about 4 innings a game? Especially if we can’t get anyone to take a good portion of his salary

tiger- Not so sure anyone (except maybe cab and vj) have had anything approaching good weather this winter. We’re used to it up here, though my wife did get stuck in the driveway yesterday and had to get pulled out. Goo thing Liberty Mutual covered it all so the plow guy could get in to do his thing.

PT Brave, FYI the food at SQ is so-so; we go there for the cold beer, margaritas, etc. and the Jimmy Buffett atmosphere. Usually a good crowd after work and on weekends.

almost a great diving play at first by Freeman, but just off his glove. Ellsbury on with a base hit….(Uggla tried to make the spectacular play behind him and fired to Hudson. Nice play just to catch it from Hudson….This is the aggressive play that can lead to errors Fredi was talking about? Not to overanalyze)

Saltalamacchia is not in the lineup today against his former mates but came by and gave some hugs by the batting cage. Spoke to my esteemed notes group colleague Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe and he said the catching job is basically Salty’s gig now, with Varitek playing 50 or so games in more of a Crash Davis type roll….well, that’s not exactly how he put it.

RBI single by David Ortiz off Hudson makes it 1-0 Red Sox, but Schafer just nailed Crawford at third on a nice throw.

A run on two singles and a walk off Hudson in the first. He threw 19 pitches, 12 for strikes.
