Yo… Mr. Tibbs… I guess you did not remember that last year McLouth couldn’t hit water falling out of a boat and that began the first day of spring training and did not abate until sometime in September last year. So yeah, his stroking balls to left center is a good sign.

“No logical reason for him to hit 3rd.”
No logical reason for him to move DOWN in the lineup either.
The man still gets on base at a very good rate.
I think Heyward is gonna prove to be the team’s best hitter and will wind up in the 3-hole by the break.
But when that happens, if Chipper is still getting on base at a rate comparable to past years, he oughta move up to the second spot rather than down

Brave4life-1995 all over again??, well, do you mean for 2010?
I would take Tulo, Stephen Drew, Hanley, Furcal, Rollins and Reyes in 2010. I’m not sure if there are many more I would take. There are some that may have 50/50 shots to be better. Even Rollins and Reyes are question marks given their ages and injury histories.

Geez, just let Nate play and see what happens. He was playing with a concussion last year and just fouled himself up. If he has his swing straightened out, he’s at least an average CF. I want Schafer to take the job, but Nate ain’t going nowhere, so let’s hope he’s back to normal. He is not a .190 hitter. He and Gonzalez are what they are; you can’t have an all-star at every position. But both of them have been good, productive players for several years. They’re probably both going to be gone next year unless no one in the system is ready to start at SS.
Heyward batting sixth makes all kinds of sense. He’ll get RBI opportunities and protect Uggla or Mac batting fifth. Assuming Nate makes a comeback or Schafer takes his job, both make a lot more sense batting second than wasting Jason’s power there.

“oops! nope, this is wrong. at the time yunel was traded, the braves had the best record in the NL, and 3rd best in the majors.” DAP
“Not that it has anything to do with just Yunel but we were actually a better team in terms of results before the all-star break when we had a 52-36 record, we went 39-35 after the break for various reasons.” Jake W.
“N8 wrong? Say it ain’t so,Joe?” CB
“Escobar never disappointed the past 3-4 years” Brave4life-1995 all over again??
Oh where to start?
Before the trade, Braves went 46-33. After the trade, the Braves went 45-38. So on the surface, you could say that before the trade, they were better. You’d be right. Slightly, but right.
Until you look at the month of May. Why May you ask? Well that’s the month that Troy Glaus went off and carried this team. Braves went 20-8 in the month of May.
Well, one would think that Escobar was a big part of that too, right? Nope. For starters, he (Escobar) only played in 16 of the 28 games. Braves went 12-4 in the games he played in, and 8-4 without him.
But sadly enough, other than perhaps defense, Escobar had little to do with those wins. In the month of May in his 16 games played, Escobar batted .207 with 12 hits, 0 HR and 4 RBI.
To put that into perspective, Troy Glaus had 4 RBI on May 1st. Ending up with a .330 average, 6 HR and 28 RBI in May. Followed with 6 more HR and 19 more RBI in June. Escobar added 6 RBI to the mix in June.
The Braves had a better record before Escobar was traded in spite of his effort. Not BECAUSE of his effort. Escobar was hitting .198 with 0 HR and 18 RBI in 227 AB before the trade. Yup. He was a HUGE part of why they were winning (eyes rolling).
Seems to me that if Escobar was contributing to the winning ways in the eyes of his GM and manager….. he wouldn’t have been traded to begin with.
But don’t let the facts get in your guys’ way.

Besides, my initial comment on the topic was disputing the “youth” portion of that initial remark. Not that we were actually a good team. But since people wanted to bring up whether we were better of with or without Yunel, I figured I’d clarify it for y’all.
With Glaus, Saito, Wagner in the mix last year we wer far from “young” when Escobar was still on the team.
We had Heyward, Hanson, Venters and Prado. Jurrjens wasn’t contributing and everybody else wasn’t that young. Kimbrel came later.
This year, with Escobar gone (who really isn’t that young), Freeman replacing Glaus, Kimbrel and Venters replacing Wagner and Saito…. even with Gonzo, this team is YOUNGER and likely will be better than the team was through june last year. If you swap Schafer for McLouth, we get even younger.

It wasn’t until Yunel and his automatic outs at the plate were gone that we turned into the better teams in the NL. N8
I honestly don’t know why you would think this at all. Before the trade, the Braves had the best record in the NL (52-36) with a .591 winning percentage. From July 14 on, the Braves went 39-35, good for a .527 winning percentage.
I’ll grant that some of that is due to injuries, but I definitely wouldn’t say that getting Gonzalez made them better.
