How about hitting the weight room this year!!!. It will help with your guaranteed back injury for the 5th year in a row. Please get a trainer. You get paid to much to be soft as a Q-Tip. Yeah I said it.

I would bet my money that Alex Gonzalez will be the weakest offensive starter on this team
He was “over-rated” as a blue jay
He hit 8 HR in 112 games as a Brave in 112 games
He hit 23 HR in 157 games as a Blue Jay
Blue jays are on that juice last year

“Haha, i am not starting an argument, but still am not sold on Alex Gonzalez. He may be a veteran but is way too inconsistent. Last year when we need our veterans to perform most in the post season, alex gonzalez failed miserably”
Well, it’s a good thing you aren’t looking to start an argument, because based on the points you’re making, it’s an argument you’d likely lose.
For starters, while Gonzalez at his age isn’t as talented as Yunel is with the glove. But in reality is actually more conistent at the plate than Escobar ever was. Especially last year.
Finally, I seem to recall Gonzo having a HUGE hit in the extra innings game in SF. So comparatively speaking, he did as much (and maybe more) than other Braves hitters did last season.
If you’re not sold on Gonzo based on that series against the Giants pitching staff? You likely are not sold on any player still on the Braves that was on that roster.
Perhaps you should become a Toronto Blue Jays fan?

Dude, overrated is a guy who was expected to perform and didn’t (see Yunel Escobar)…while Alex was nowhere near expected to hit that many HR in Toronto.
You may wanna know the terminology and what you’re talking about before you go throwing things around like that…
I may have agreed with you if you had said “overachiever”, but thats quite different than what you did say…
And what you said about the Jays…that can’t be proven and I just can’t argue w/ something that at current is fiction.

N8 We had Yunel last year and were NOT one of the best young teams in the majors. It wasn’t until Yunel and his automatic outs at the plate were gone that we turned into the better teams in the NL.
oops! nope, this is wrong. at the time yunel was traded, the braves had the best record in the NL, and 3rd best in the majors.

Not that it has anything to do with just Yunel but we were actually a better team in terms of results before the all-star break when we had a 52-36 record, we went 39-35 after the break for various reasons. This is a team game and its hard to attribute overall success or failure to the addition or subtraction of one player. So for accuracy sake the TEAM was playing better in the first half than the TEAM played in the second half.

Given the high OBP guys for the Braves, I have a feeling that today’s offense is a sign of what to expect during the reg season. When I was listening to the Games on Sat and Sun, there were a ton of long ABs by everyone in the line up.
Lots of guys getting on base. Just need a single or a double to get some runs home.

I going by there respective track records. Yunel Escobar 2 years back had almost a .400 avg w/ RISP. Maybe thats why I miss him the most. I believe that if we can give Mclouth a 2nd chance after a 2010 torrid year we should have given Escobar another chance.
Alex Gonzalez is nothing but an average player w/ career avg of
.248 avg
.294 OBP
.695 OPS
Yunel Escobar career avg
.289 avg.
.364 OBP
.762 OPS
and a better glove. BUT a bigger mouth

I would bet my money that Alex Gonzalez will be the weakest offensive starter on this team
Well, I think if McLouth bounces back to any noticeable degree and/or Schafer breaks out, you’re right. But also how weak one considers him depends on if you take position into account. There are only a few shortstops in the game that get on base at a clip above the .300 range. So Gonzalez is no worse than any other shortstop offensively. Plus, even if his power takes a hit this season, he’s likely to slug better than most shortstops.
So “weakest hitter on the team”? There’s a good chance. But “weak”? Not really. If McLouth bounces back and/or Schafer breaks out, the Braves aren’t going to have any hitters that are weaker than an average hitter at each position.

Didn’t see the runs score off Linebrink because I was down getting Lowe, but one scored on a sharply hit ball off Uggla’s glove and the other on a pop-up to the mound that Hicks tried to field and tripped on the mound. Word is he always made a terrific bare-handed play but couldn’t. results is Braves up 6-2 and now bases are loaded vs. Sherrill

Sherrill gets Michael Bourn to bounce into double play to end the fourth….true to form, he gets the lefty. Of the first batters he faced, all right-handed, he retired only one (Jason Castro) on a strikeout. Johnson and Manzella singled, Matt Downs walked on four pitches

“It’s been said on here about a million times already, but batting McLouth second and Heyward sixth is a travesty.”
I would rather them switch but I wouldn’t say “travesty.” I would rather Heyward hit in one of the top three or four spots, since he’s probably the best hitter on the team. But one moderately reasonable batting order versus another is not going to make a major difference in run output.

Shaun — I’ll give you that. “Travesty” was a poor word choice on my part. I still maintain the principle of my statement, though, for the same reason that you said above. Heyward is probably the best hitter on the team, so we should be maximizing the number of plate appearances he gets. He should be hitting 3rd, in my opinion, but that won’t happen until Chipper retires. Oh well.
