I find it refreshing when an athlete or similar says what is on their mind. I don’t mean in a T.O. look at me kind of way, but in a real way. One nice thing about getting older is you really really don’t care what people think about you. Not saying that is an excuse to get stupid about it, but, you can def call it liek you see it with no qualms.

Some cynics not only question Jones physically, they wonder if money is his primary motivation. This accusation generally comes from the short-sighted, ignorant and disturbed segment of the populace that vents on sports talk radio and posts comments on blogs, all behind the comfort of anonymity.
Between that and Chipper’s comments, the idiots have been emasculated.
“I still feel like I have something to offer, and the cynical fan can really kiss my ass. I really don’t care. _ C. Jones
Nothing wrong with a little regular guy speak in my opinion. Meaning he does not come across as an ass, like say a certain Atlanta Hawk that shall remain nameless ( Joe Johnson).
I don’t know that much about Chipper, he likes to hunt, has a family and a ranch, does not seem to make a lot of noise, that is about it. Obviously a competitive guy that wants to win, get back to the World Series, works for me.
Chipper’s comments are spot on. Check out his bank account and you’d definitely see he doesn’t need to lift a finger for the rest of his life if he chooses not to. He’s a true baseball player. A true teammate and has one hell of a sideways tilt to his mouth when he talks.

From the previous blog which had 1,483 comments, Tomahawkin led the way with 146 posts. There were 129 different poster names. Here are the Top 25:
I guess I’m not in the top 25 (yet), but hey, it’s spring training. If it was the last week of ST I might be worried, just gettin started. All I need is around 20-25 posts left handed and about 20 or so right handed and come opening day, I’m good to go.
I like Chipper more and more each year….his and Shultz’s comments about little boys banging away at the keyboard from their mommys’ basements really cracked me up; 99.9% of them never played organized sports anyway, yet they comment here and call in to all the sports talk radio stations. Guess it’s their right, but glad Chipper told them to kiss his ass.
restructured, that was the world I was looking for…..Thanks Marty “Taco” Perez…
Here’s what I was talking about:
6 years/$90M (2001-06), plus 2007 & 2008 club options signed extension with Atlanta 8/00 $8M signing bonus 01:$9M, 02:$10M, 03:$12M, 04:$14M, 05:$15M, 06:$17M, 07:$15M club option ($5M buyout) (vests with 450 PAs or All-Star selection in 06), 08:$15M club option ($5M buyout) (vests with 450 PAs or All-Star selection in 07) $5M bonus if both 2007 & 2008 options vested $4M deferred at 0% interest ($2M in 05, $2M in 06), reducing present value at time of signing (8/00) to $89.005M
3 years/$37M (2006-08), plus 2009 option
signed re-worked extension with Atlanta 11/05, replacing options and final guaranteed year of previous deal $4M signing bonus (due 1/06) 06:$11M, 07:$11M, 08:$11M, 09:$8M-$11M vesting option value of 2009 option based on performance and award bonuses (vested at $11M)
Sorry, guys, it still boils down to how Chipper’s 39-year-old knee holds up. I like Chipper’s determination. Glad he’s fighting mad (in his way). Glad he still wants to play with his fellow Braves and make a difference on the field. Pulling for him. But we need to see how Chipper’s knee wears.
my problem with Chipper last few years…his hangovers are much more obvious & frequent & “Mantle-like” than they were in past. He’s Braves’ Charlie Sheen?
Tomahawkin, I don’t share your concern about Chipper’s comments somehow being used against him. He has taken a lot of grief on the AJC blogs, the Braves Vent and many other blogs. It’s about time he sent a message back to his detractors. I say more power to him.
Of course, if someone were to print his comments out, roll the page up tightly and poke him in the eye with it, it might cause him some discomfort.
Tomas…………Dude you lost me with all those numbers. I’ll give credit where it’s due. But I always thought that Chipper would get the same amount but at a later date….am I wrong?
Put me down in the Chaipper Jones Fan club. I’ve been following him since he was drafted and my sons and I have always appreciated his Brave contributions.
Braves fans: Forget it suckers! It will be long season – your pathetic offense having to face our superior rotation. MLB should just go ahead and award us champs of the NL East now. Even the Mets are better than the Braves.
Tomhawkin, in your 5 p.m. reply to my question, you still didn’t explain to me why Chipper should be careful what he says and who/how is anyone going to “use it against him.” I mean, he clearly doesn’t care about the thoughts of those who would use it again him, right? Read the column, that much is clear.
Well, the past couple of years, people have thought Chipper needed to take at least a day a week off. I would imagine that this year, they’ll get their wish.
I think Chipper is being a little too sensitive. Maybe he should stop reading the blog.
Chipper answered a question asked by Schultz, who mentioned to him what folks are saying. He would’ve answered the same way whether he read the blog/comments/vents/whatever.What do you want him to say?
And when fans of his own team call him a money-grabber, I dont think his reaction can be called “too sensitive”.
Why, nolie, of course. You should watch the Mets this season. They are clearly a superior team, that was obvious the past two days. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the WS. The Phillies better watch out.
Yeah Chipper is being a lil sensitive but lets try to look at it in a positive way seems like he is going into this year with a “Chip on his shoulder” No pun intended.
Why do people get SOOOOOOOOO worked up over these Spring Training Games If its March 25th and The hitters and pitchers are playing and pitching like they are now then Start Worrying I cant wait till 3 weeks into the Season after if any of you have checked when they play STL, MIL, LA, SF with alot of that good pitching those guys got People are going to be going nuts if they are struggling its ONLY the 2nd Game people. Next thing people are going to say on here is that the MUTS are going to win the NL East.
JHey’s better, in a perfect world, I could overlook the downright horrible pitching I’ve seen the past two days, but it’s clear that the Braves will not compete this season. I don’t understand why you haven’t caught on after these two games. At the rate they’re going, the Mets will not only win the Division, they are likely to win the WS. I see no need for the Braves to even finish Spring Training. They are as done as burnt toast.
Ohhhhh yes they are looking TOO much into these games! Yesterday a blogger said they should just give Schafer the CF job even though this kid has missed the better part of the last 3 seasons. Uggla struck out 2day so guess Brooks Conrad will be the Opening Day 2B and FF is gonna hit 70 doubles after his 3 Double perfromance yesterday? Give me a break people
Snotboogie—-He would’ve answered the same way whether he read the blog/comments/vents/whatever.What do you want him to say?
I don’t think his reaction would have been so sharply worded if he hadn’t been reading the blog or listening to sports talk radio. But that’s Ok–he can speak his mind. But I think I understand what Tomahawkin’ meant when he said Justice or Deion would have been ripped if they said something like that. But I’m not going to put words in his mouth.. .
Ohhhhh yes they are looking TOO much into these games! Yesterday a blogger said they should just give Schafer the CF job even though this kid has missed the better part of the last 3 seasons.
I think you are being a little too sensitive to what blog-commenters say.
Brava What are you talking about you mean to tell me a Starting Rotation of Lowe, Hudson, JJ, Hanson, and whoever the fifth starter is doesnt match up to other rotations around the NL. The 2010 Braves where 6th in the NL last year in runs the 2011 team is basically the same with addition of More power with the Uggla on board. Come on you gotta give them more credit than that
I’m actually a little surprised that Chipper would give a rat’s azz what any of us think or say. Personally, I don’t really have a big bromance thing going for Chipper, but I do realize that we need him if we are to make the playoffs this year. We don’t have a lot of options at 3rd, so here’s hoping Chipper can have a good year and play at least 100-120 games.
Even Bobby being gone doesn’t help. His legacy hangs over the Braves like a choking sewer emission cloud, robbing them of any ability to function at even a AA level.
A blogger said? So what, Robert thinks the Braves will win 101 games this year just because Cox is gone. How many does Nick say they will win 72 or something? Big deal
Snotboggie Not being sensitive about what bloggers say here but when people blog stuff that obviously dont even watch the games or follow them team then try to tell others that what they are saying is BS I just find it Humorus
Here’s some comments from Jeff “”I seemingly prove how little I actually pay attention to the Braves every time I type something” Schultz’s little story.
Here goes….
“When an athlete pushing 39 has reconstructive knee surgery, the tendency is to speak about them in past tense. Or worse. Some cynics not only question Jones physically, they wonder if money is his primary motivation. This accusation generally comes from the short-sighted, ignorant and disturbed segment of the populace that vents on sports talk radio and posts comments on blogs, all behind the comfort of anonymity.”
Oh where to start with this comment? First of all…. I read EVERY post on this blog (DOB’s). Unfortunately for my intelligence, I usually read Jeff’s stories and blogs too. I also listen to Atlanta Sports Talk radio a few times a week…..
Where the hell is Jeff pulling this from? Maybe (and it’s a SERIOUS maybe), 1 out of 10 bloggers, or callers to the radio shows question whether Chipper is hanging around for the money. Jeff acts like anybody who questions how productive Chipper can be coming off of the surgery at age 39 and wonders at what point Chipper’s contract will be a burden is saying Chipper is a money grubbing thief.
As nolie would say…. talk about a huge strawman theory.
“When I asked Jones about the accusation, he laughed. Then he swung away.”
Of course he did. Chipper usually lets his actions on the field do all the talking (with the occasionally ill-timed public comment that sometimes makes fans scratch their heads. But when do athletes, stars and what not get defensive? When the “money” hasn’t been where their mouth is. If Chipper can’t grasp why some fans might question his ability to come back and produce, when for the past two years his numbers have been in decline? I actually feel sorry for him. Classic case of a guy maybe hanging on too long.
Then Chipper was quoted as saying:
“If they think I’m doing this for the money, they obviously haven’t seen my bank account,” he said.”
While he has a point… Nicely put Chipper. Nice way of reminding how rich the fans that pay to see you play have made you. As if the sky-rocketing ticket prices in the past few years weren’t enough reminder. Also, I’m not so sure if I’m Chipper with the numbers I’ve put up since the batting title, I’d be reminding anybody to check out my bank account.
“I’ve never played this game for money. Nor will I. My mind doesn’t work that way. I play this game because I love my teammates and they wanted me to come back.”
That I can believe. I’ve never once questioned he was coming back for the money.
“I still feel like I have something to offer, and the cynical fan can really kiss my ass. I really don’t care. There’s a bunch of true fans and the people who actually want to take the time to get to know me know who I am. The guy who sits in his mom’s basement and types on his mom’s computer, I couldn’t really care less about.”
So eliquently put. Well done.
Most of my anger (and anger is an over statement) at this story is at Schultz. But Chipper knows better. Best way to shut up the critics is to shut up himself. Go play and put up numbers. Pissing contests and snarky remarks towards fans (in any shape or form) isn’t going to do him any good.
Some real bad Chipper haters on Jeff’s blog. Chipper haters LIVE WITH IT Chipper is right up there with Hank Aaron as the greatest non-pitcher to ever play with the Braves.
N8, the fans (and I use the term lightly) that will take offense to what Chipper said are the very ones he was targeting with his comments. I’m not bothered at all by what he said because that shoe doesn’t fit my foot. He also said “everyone else gets a big hug”.
Wow N8 Had alot on his mind. But a post like that is respectable and ACTUAL GOOD READ Nolie, Bat Masterson, Tomahawkin and Company any one I left out sorry are apart of a small few people that post stuff that actually MAKES SENSE. Just the bandwagoners out there that dont really pay attention are the ones that clog up this place with utter nonsense.
“Chipper haters LIVE WITH IT Chipper is right up there with Hank Aaron as the greatest non-pitcher to ever play with the Braves.”LTBF
What does that have to do with ANYTHING when it comes to how he’ll do in 2011 or 2012 with 28 million remaining on his contract?
I agree. Chipper is one of the all-time great Braves. But it does nothing other than to give him the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to prove he can still contribute. It doesn’t make him forever immune to doubt or speculation as to how well he’ll come back at age 39 from major surgery. Does it?
I’m a Chiefs fan. Priest Holmes is one of the Chiefs all-time greatest players and clearly was a fan favorite for many years.
What does that have to do with the here and the now of future seasons and his ability to contribute? Holmes will be 38 this year.
Or closer to home? What if Smoltz decided he wanted to pitch again? Does his years of being one of the greatest Braves earn him an automatic spot on the 25 man roster?
What exactly are we supposed to “LIVE WITH”? Please explain.

But I’m not going to put words in his mouth.. .

“Chipper haters LIVE WITH IT Chipper is right up there with Hank Aaron as the greatest non-pitcher to ever play with the Braves.” LTBF
