SYDNEY – It was everything playoff baseball should be. Low-scoring, tightly contested, and in the end, like his team’s manager predicted earlier in the week, one swing of Matt Kennelly’s bat was all it took.
Just days after “Alcohol Think Again” Perth Heat skipper Brooke Knight declared that his club’s first round playoff series against the Sydney Blue Sox might come down to one swing, game one did just that. Perth first baseman Kennelly drove a mammoth two-run homer over the left field fence to break a 2-2 tie in the ninth and send his club to a 4-2 victory over the Sox and a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-three Delta Air Lines ABL Postseason Round One series Thursday night at Blacktown Olympic Park.
MATT KENNELLY continues to be on fire down home in PETER MOYLAN country.
PERTH eliminates SYDNEY 2-0 in the best of three playoff series. Now awaiting the beginning of the Championaship series.
Can the baseball season please start! Most of the schools are closed here in South Dakota with all the light snow we got and the 30mph winds we are supposed to get. Did I mention that the wind chills are expected to get down to -30 to -50!
When they met, Buckles was still a kid; he’d grown up on a farm in Missouri and fibbed about his age so he could enlist in the Army at 16 and head off to war.…
I just had a horrible thought! The 2012 season could start off with the Red Sox, having signed Albert Pujols( to split 1B and DH duties with Adrian Gonzalez, which would help take wear and tear off both as they age).
Before you say no way, Boston has $45 million coming off the books after 2011 in Papelbon $12, Ortiz $11.5, Drew $14 and Cameron $7.25.
How scary would it be to have to face a lineup of Elsbury, Pedroia, Crawford, Pujols, Gonazlez, Youkilis, Dejesus(they would still have the money to sign another OFer in the modest price range) and our old buddy Saltalamachia!
You add Lester, Bucholtz, Beckett, Lackey and Matsuzaka with Josh Bard closing OUCH!
I imagine the Yankees have thought of this possibly and may try to outbid the Red Sox, but if you were Pujols, would you want to go to an aging team with a less than stellar rotation( and no impact pitchers in the free agent market or go to the the Red Sox.
As a Braves fan, I can see a big roadblock to winning the World Series for the next 5 years, if this were to happen!
P-Town BraveI read someone say that Fredi has a “no beard” rule…

Wow. A lot happened since I last checked in on the blog. I’d say the biggest thing to be reported since this is obviously Chipper working the Delta stand. Good to see the knee is able to hold up for that.
ArkansasTransplant: This Lopez signing fits your long standing desire of low-risk/trade bait pitching for considerably less than Penny.
Just got back from the Dr. and the store. It’s a mess up here right now. They predicted 3-6 inches today and we got the three in the time it took me to go there and come back – AND 12-18 inches tomorrow. Not sure how much for the Saturday snow storm they’re predicting. Good day to be in the house.
No beer, but plenty of other (low cal) goodies (an oxymoron?), but I lost 8 pounds this month and can’t afford to lose it for the third time.
We’re @ 6 from last night and we’re headed to freezing rain in about an hour and then after that we are scheduled to get 16-24 inches between this afternoon and tomorrow night…

Yeah, would’ve loved to try and make the basketball game and slightly pissed they moved it to 3p as the only way I get out there is if they close the office early…
So did anyone read the Yahoo Sports preview of the Braves posted yesterday? Its mostly pretty trite stuff, but they pointed out two important points. First, no matter what anyone in the front office says, payroll has been cut in recent years. And second, the Braves really lost ground to the Phillies this offseason. As a Braves fan it seems like we’ve been waiting for a few years now the Phillies window to close, and yet the difference between the two teams is greater now than it was a year ago. I felt like the Braves had a realistic shot of winning the division going into spring training last year. I don’t think that is the case this year, unless the Phillies miss a lot of time due to injuries.
To really succeed, a mid-market team with limited payroll like the Braves has to develop most of its own talent and make smart, value oriented trades and signings. The organization does a great job developing pitchers, and seems to moving in the right direction with position players. In recent years, the organization has not done a good job of giving big contracts to players in their prime.
PTown: If Lopez is even serviceable I could see him being trade bait. Even if he “catches fire” I could see him, or some other player being trade bait. I don’t think there are “long term plans” for Lopez being a corner stone of the organization for the remainder of his career. If he starts coming along but there is no room on the major league club, I could very easily see him traded. If he comes along and they make room on the club, it frees up another piece which could be traded. By acquiring Lopez the Braves have removed from the market one other player thus potentially opening up more trading partners for KK.
Lew, sounds like you guys are getting dumped on pretty good. It’s been strange here. I’m not sure what our total for the winter so far is. But in the past few years, we’ve been warmer so when we do get dumped on it’s gone away, and then obviously it piles up again with new snow-fall.
But this year it’s been so damn cold, that it’s not going anywhere. This is our 3rd winter at this house and the snow that’s piled up in my front yard more than it has either of the previous two. And we’ve got a good month, maybe two before it’s going to be warm enough to get rid of it all. I’m pretty tired of it. My dad’s in Florida until March, so I’ve been responsible for his driveway too, my back can’t take much more of it! LOL
You’re welcome Nova Scotia Steve….I probably should have paced myself and spread it out a little! oh well. bombardment on a daily basis will be coming very soon.
Don’t know how many of you saw it, but I posted a photo on Twitter of a ball that Chipper literally knocked the cover off of today when he was hitting in the batting cage. Granted, they use older balls for those situations, but still, not something you see every day: http://twitpic.com/3vi4z5
I don’t either, but why would you trade for a guy you could have for nothing?
I just can’t see there being a market for him…
There was a market of sorts for him before he signed with Atlanta. Assuming he gets back on the horse and is serviceable, there should still be a market for the guy, maybe even larger if, as assumed, he proves to be more than he was last year.
Plus, snatching up Lopez sucks a little more air out of that back end starter market, thus making KK a little more attractive. Not much more, but a little more.
By the way, I mentioned to Chipper today that his talking about knee tendinitis yesterday brought out another round of skepticism on the blog, Twitter, etc. He kind of smirked and said, “Tell ‘em I’m gonna be in the lineup Opening Day.”
By the way, I mentioned to Chipper today that his talking about knee tendinitis yesterday brought out another round of skepticism on the blog,
I was astounded by the number of “He’s toast” comments attached to the actual story. I’m guessing from folks who have never rehabbed. Or have never gotten up off the couch enough to ever be sore, maybe, LOL.
While I’m on here at the same time as you, I’d like to take this time to wish your team all the best in this Sunday’s Super Bowl. I hope they kick butt.
BravePack: Chipper’s been only one to hit in two days. This isn’t for hitters, of course. All about pitchers. But Chipper’s hit before going on Caravan, and he can see trainers and hit and lift weights all at same place.
felt like the Braves had a realistic shot of winning the division going into spring training last year. I don’t think that is the case this year
Wait. You thought the Braves with Melky, Glaus, et al, had a shot, but the Braves with Uggla, Freeman, and a second-year Heyward do not? Because of Oswalt and Lee alone? I’m going to politely disagree with you on the topic, I believe.
It really must be snowing hard in Albany…why else would Thomas grace us with his presence two afternoons in a row? (cabravesfan)
I have my schedule prearranged around the storms. I only have to go on the road 3 days per week, with few exceptions. You’re stuck with me until, at least, Thursday.
As Braves prez John Schuerholz held that cover of the Chipper-damaged baseball, Chipper smiled and said to him, “That’s what you have to look forward to this year.”
One person said that Schultz’ headline that Fredi is “Cox 2.0″ said that was the worst thing he could’ve written because Bobby is an idiot. Schultz responded:
It’s only the “worst thing” I could have written to those fans who don’t think Bobby Cox was a good manager. Obviously I’m not of that opinion.
I don’t know have many of you have seen a player “knock the cover off a ball” ,but its a rare thing you will only see a few times. It’s some serious power and spin. He’s really locked in right now.
(By the way, it sure was nice of you to wish BravesPack’s team well in the Super Bowl! It must have been very painful to write those words about a team you can’t stand… )
I want to first say thank you for those kind words and wanted to wish you the same for this Sunday. Although we both know the Steelers are a tough and great team I truely believe and am very confident that our Packers will win. They are playing so well right now and with so much confidence that like I said from the beginning of the playoffs the Packers will be tough to beat. I am counting down the days and as each day passes the excitement builds as this will be the first Super Bowl I get to watch and hopefully celebrate a Packers victory with my 8 year old son who loves the Packers like his dad. Go Pack Go!
Explanation: “Benny the Jet” hit the hide off a ball in the 1993 movie The Sandlot, cementing a long-time myth about backyard baseball.
But what exactly would it take to split the stitches? The MythBusters tackled this “mitt-buster” by throwing a few pressurized pitches across the plate into a standstill bat.
A professional pitcher can rocket a fastball more than 90 miles per hour, and batters have been known to crack balls into the outfield at more than 130 miles per hour. But even the official fastest pitch ever recorded — 100.9 mph — isn’t enough to send a baseball skin flying.
A ball pitched fast enough to split the laces will actually crack the bat before it can do as much damage to the ball. It wasn’t until the MythBusters cranked a full-throttle pitch from a pressurized cannon into a bat that the hide blew off, sending the guts headed for a homer.
Of course, the cannon hurtled that ball at more than 400 mph, which is just not possible with mere human force. Even at top speeds produced by professional players, baseballs don’t come unraveled — but this myth sure did. It’s a swing and a miss.
I was watching the Manny Ramirez/Johnny Damon press conference on MLB Network at lunch and someone asked a question about what kind of shape they are in. Damon responded by saying (I’m paraphrasing here):
I’m ready to go out there and compete. I feel like I can hang with the young guys. We can look in the mirror and flex…or if I can’t hang with them that way, we can go in the shower and compete there.
What the hell kind of an operation are they running down there?
Was that a small joke? I liked it. Is it OK if I hope it actually happens? I mean, you don’t see Chipper that late on a fastball much, but I suppose it’s possible that he could hit a screamer right at Chance sitting in his third base line seats. I wouldn’t want him to die; permanently disfigured, maybe?
Hillbilly, that’s just Johnny bleepin’ Damon being his own self, the gods help him. All those posts here, once upon a time, clamoring for that guy in a Braves’ uni…mercy. I mean, MERCY!
How awesome was that video? Between that, and the throw from center to right field, kinda says it all about ol’ Melky. I’m so glad he and Ankiel are gone. At least when Nate sucks, I can remember RHR calling him a leprechaun and laugh.
Why do you assume he’s going to magically return to some pre-2010 form, but only his 2007-2009 form, not his 2005-2006 form, when last season he set a new bar for how bad a starting CF can be murph
What I have been saying is not all that hard to understand dude, I have never said that i assume he will return to that, in fact I have always said that i don’t know what will happen.
My peeve is folks like you rewriting his previous career. If you wanna take the negative track for the future thats just fine with me, but the fact that he stunk last year does not mean that he did not have three good years in a row b4 that and i get tired of reading crap that says otherwise.
you can’t legitimately say that he stunk when he was in the top third of all CFers. That is not the definition of “stunk”.

The Delta Airlines photos were absolutely awesome as well – I got a great kick out of that – made me smile seeing that smirk on C. Jones face.
And love seeing the dude back in the batting cage.

I was astounded by the number of “He’s toast” comments attached to the actual story. I’m guessing from folks who have never rehabbed. Or have never gotten up off the couch enough to ever be sore, maybe, LOL.

felt like the Braves had a realistic shot of winning the division going into spring training last year.

I like reading about a motivated Chipper Jones. You won’t see this blogger putting down a man that’s done so much for this organization.

Mythbusters

http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/db/sports/hitting-baseball-hard-knocks-hide-off.html

Ward,
Was that a small joke? I liked it. Is it OK if I hope it actually happens? I mean, you don’t see Chipper that late on a fastball much, but I suppose it’s possible that he could hit a screamer right at Chance sitting in his third base line seats. I wouldn’t want him to die; permanently disfigured, maybe?
