Playin’ any smooth jazz we haven’t discussed? Haven’t been hitting the “broadening my horizons” gig lately.

Trying to begin the downsizing. Being a historian, collector and general pack-rat, I got rooms full of glassware, 19th century bottles, furniture, and pottery I’m looking to sell if you know anyone interested.

Interestingly enough, along the lines of sports memorabilia, only a CLETE BOYER autographed baseball which he signed shortly for me in COOPERSTOWN four years ago shortly before he passed.

Lew – just keep on ragging on Nate just like you did Tim Hudson and Kelly Johnson. God only knows why you feel it necessary to degrade players who are the type who represent the Braves positively in every way and want to be Braves. Your record of player evaluation speaks for itself.

Hi, nolie. Sorry about the delay (work called). I stopped by here just to see how the other half lives. That, and it’s snowing in Albany and I’m bored.

Hello, richbrave. I haven’t focused on anything in particular lately, being I haven’t been home very much. But XM satellite has an excellent smooth jazz station that I listen to quite often.

I’m about to listen to Brian Auger & The Oblivion Express (keyboard jazz musician) on old vinyl very shortly. Are you familiar with him?

KeyLargo – Bull – Nate is the first player I’ve ever ragged on. Until that, I caught crap constantly for being a Homer.

What I said about Hudson (if you’d really bothered to listen), was that I was concerned about him coming back from surgery and after his 2009 season, I’d prefer keeping Vazquez, which WAS a reasonable alternative. The fact Hudson turned out fine was, I felt, a good thing. I never once said that I though Hudson was not anything but a good pitcher.

And as to Kelly Johnson – seriously? The Dude had just nit .220 something for most of a year and he was about to cash in through arb – AND we had Prado in the wings. So get your story straight.

And as for Nate, I’ve also said I hope he comes back – at LEAST to the .248 he’s hit for the balance of his career if you except the ONE good year he had and actually played a full season. Go look it up.

Lew

January 30th, 2011
7:13 pm

And IF KJ had hit that for the Braves the previous season, He would have been our second baseman and Prado would have been in left. IF ONLY. He didn’t. He had to go to Arizona and that hitter’s paradise to put up those numbers, which he never did while a Brave.

Glad you’re prescient.

TnBrian Is there anything better than that kind of weather, especially after a long winter?

Nope, I can’t think of a thing…If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 1600 times—I could live with that weather year-round, with it being colder in the winter, of course.

jeffrey d – The point was what he was about to make in arbitration after having a really bad year. Never had anything against the Dude, just didn’t think he was worth what he’d cost us when we had Prado, who was obviously ready to take over second.

Of course not, especially after his horrible 2009 season. I’ve always been a big KJ fan, and I wish him the best in Arizona. I just don’t like how people wrote off after 2009 (don’t mean to imply that you were)

Lew – you ranted and hated Hudson with the same voracity you’ve been going after Nate the past month. Just because enough people jumped you on it and you decided to change your position doesn’t mean I forgot the hateful, trash you piled on Nate.

You told everybody who would listen how stupid it was to resign Hudson, that he was never going to be the pitcher he used to be. YOU WERE WRONG.

You also went on and on and on about Vazquez and how we should keep him and scuttle Hudson. Vazquez would have cost 50% more than Hudson for 50% of the production.

Tim Hudson

17 W 9 L 2.83 ERA 228.2 IP 74 BB 139 SO WHIP 1.247

Javier Vazquez

Kelly Johnson was not going to arbitration. He was going to make about $3M in 2010 and had two wrist injuries that put him on the DL last year and required him to stay in Gwinnett for three weeks on a rehab assignment. After he came back he hit .261 .358 .493 .851 after he came back from the DL – which is when he was healthy. You might notice that the numbers he put up in 09 after the injury are almost exactly like the ones he had in Arizona this year. And by the way, KJ put up better numbers than not only Prado but any Brave this year.

Kelly Johnson 2010

09 after coming off the DL

Well towards the end wasn’t Prado the one playing with injury and to be fair to Martin he played most of his games in what is not widely considered a hitters haven. I mean they’re discussing a humidor in AZ for a reason. I don’t have anything against KJ but its a little unfair to boast that his numbers were better than every brave when he clearly played in a park that favored hitters and his splits show it.

Glad you’re here as I watched the original True Grit and I’ll have to say I probably enjoyed it just as much as the Coen brothers version I saw Christmas Eve afternoon. Of course, having never seen the Hathaway version, I didn’t arrive expecting to compare Jeff Bridges to John Wayne and didn’t to any “cross comparisons” as I watched Saturday. They’re simply different movies.
The first version moved a lot quicker than I expected and I was much more impressed with Wayne’s performance than I thought I would be, (Falling off the horse in a drunken stooper and, failing in his attempts to get off the ground, says, “We’re gonna camp……..right……….here”, as he points to a spot about one foot from where he fell.)
I’m not very familiar with much of Kim Darby’s work and thought she was a great Maddie Ross. And even Glen Campbell, who has “aw shucked” his own performance in that movie for years, was a decent actor. In addition, Robert Duvall had a much bigger role than I’d expected.
As I tell nolie from time to time: I didn’t give Westerns their fare due as a kid and I’m enjoying seeing what Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, etc. were up to all those years in that film genre. Thanks again for the heads up.
