The Road_

The falling snow curtained them about. There was no way to see anything at either side of the road. He was coughing again and the boy was shivering, the two of them side by side under the sheet of plastic, pushing the grocery cart through the snow. Finally he stopped. The boy was shaking uncontrollably.

We have to stop, he said.

It’s really cold.

I know.

Where are we?

Where are we?

Yes.

I don’t know.

If we were going to die would you tell me?

I don’t know. We’re not going to die.

The Road was a very good book. Since so much of it was internalized and minimalist it was hard for a movie to really nail it IMO, and the movie was only OK I thought.

I agree, nolie.

Having watched the movie first, I saw it as a survival story first and foremost. The book as a morality narrative, but much of that is inferred. There was as scene in both, though I think the setting was different, where something bad had happened. After it was over the man said to the boy: “You’re not the one that has to worry about everything.” In the movie the boy yells at the man, though in the book he is distraught, ” Yes I am, I am the one”. It means a lot to the story.

ray k., the supremely annoying Ashton Kutcher was in the critically panned — like just about all of his movies — but lucrative Dude, Where’s My Car? It made close to $50 mill, believe it or not.

Why he gets a plum role now in a movie opposite the fetching and talented Natalie Portman, I’m as clueless as you. And while we’re on the subject, why does Canon have him as the star of all its commercials, with that five-day stubble that looks like it’s painted on?

The Road brought to mind another survival story I read when I was young. Alas Babylon by Pat Frank. A teacher turned me onto to it, she thought I would love it and she was right. I read that book several times and could probably tell the story in great detail even now. Set in a much different time though, before the concept of nuclear winter and when some people thought a nuclear war was winnable.

Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour is thy judgment come.

Ashton Kutcher movies are “Direct to Airlines” type – the ones we always seem to run into on long haul flights with no other choice. Former Braves farmhand Iker Franco sparked a four-run fourth inning with a leadoff homer and Barbaro Canizares (Braves) delivered an RBI single as Obregon captured its second title in four years and clinched a spot in the Caribbean Series.

I’ll keep sayin (and I truly mean it) that I hope Nate has a great comeback season – just get tired of cleaning the pee off my shoes from those claiming he’s misunderstood and with the exception of last year, he’s a top 10% player at his position. Just not sure how anyone who has played ONE full season since he came up years ago can be considered the top 10% at his position. If for nothing else, the fact he’s only played one year where he’s missed less than 25-30 games would deny him any such status.

Yeah, he might just come back, but he hasn’t had all that sterling a career and can’t figure why so many claim he has.

Uga-Brave that said macc, numbers are in reverse.

I wouldn’t say that. He had a down year in 2010 and his Doubles have gone down over the past two seasons, but I don’t think he’s in reverse at all. He had some eye problems, but that’s all in the past now (hopefully).

6th-hole hitter? Eh…perhaps, but definitely 5th-hole. I’d really appreciate it if he didn’t get stuck in the cleanup spot again this year (kinda getting burned out on complaining about batting order), but I guess if he does, he’ll have good protection in Uggla.

I’m with Ward—I think BMac’s gonna have a very good year…but then again I pretty much always do. ;)

nolie too early to know if it is a trend or an aberration.

I guess employers have until the end of February (legally) to give T4 slips – I believe that’s what they’re called up here…

Hoping it doesn’t take that long – since I live in the north – we get “Northern Living Pay” – Usually amounts to $1000 or $1,100 alone – something like $14 bucks a day – one of the perks of living in a remote area. Not to mention you can claim two trips outside of the Yukon up to $5,000.

Whitehorse is actually hosting “Hockey Day in Canada” on Feb 12. Ron McLean and Don Cherry and a bunch of other hockey stars like Wendle Clark, Doug Gilmore, Trevor Linden are all coming up…to celebrate hockey at the grass roots level. CBC Television will be broadcasting all day from Whitehorse and local rinks – should be really cool.

They are trying to get Wayne Gretzky as well – but even if he was confirmed – I think that would be a last minute announcement.

So hoping they get on it early and have our slips in a week or two.

Here’s an idea. Rank the top nine players who’s success (or lack of) will determine the Braves’ success this season. As in … if (fill in the blank) has a great season, the team will have a great season.
Here’s mine:
1. McLouth
2. Chipper
3. Hudson
4. Venters
5. Lowe
6. Freeman
7. Gonzalez
8. Jurrjens
9. Heyward

Steve McP

Nova Scotia Steve

I disagree.

The Braves are going to need their big guns to have solid performances to have success. If Hudson, Hanson, Lowe, Jurrjens, Prado, Uggla, McCann, Heyward etc aren’t performing well.

We ain’t going anywhere. You need your best players to be your best players…Nate McLouth hitting 220 isn’t going to make or break our season. If he hits 250 or 260 tho it certainly wouldn’t hurt our chances.

Gil Garrido

January 30th, 2011

Well, some things in baseball depend a lot on defense and pure luck. Some things depend very little on outside factors. It’s not either/or. There are obviously different degrees of outside influence.

Also, Nolie, why are you assuming I like ERA any better than WHIP. I think the are both problematic. I prefer to look at all of these: K/9, BB/9, HR/9, groundball rate. You’ll never hear me defend ERA or WHIP as very reliable stats to look at to determine the best pitchers.
