I think one can be sad and still enjoy celebrating someone’s life- that’s what you have to do- don’t dwell on the bad parts- like at my uncle’s reception- it took us a while to get the margaritas going because, as someone pointed out, he was the one that always made them and nobody else knew how We all laughed- it was a great memory
Tiger297 – I saw your post to me about 3 hours after you posted it. If you wanted to fly to the Caymans, you can buy a Cuban Overflight Permit. It saves you from having to take such a circuit rout and is well worth the cost vs. fuel cost. It is just like flying IFR. You have a time and date window to cross over and US ATC hands you off to Cuba and they fly you down a designated corridor at about 4000 or 5000 ft. and then releases you on the south side of Cuba when you’re out of their airspace. The Caymans are only about 100 miles south of Cuba and it’s an easy hop from Miami, Key West, or even as far north as Fort Pierce. I liked flying out of Ft Pierce (Jax was home then) because they have customs there that isn’t as busy as Miami plus they rented emergency gear like life rafts if you wanted them.
I’ve read about it and it looks really cool the biggest challenge for me is its about a 300 mile flight and in my skyhawk that is getting close to my limit. Don’t like to plan a trip to an island landing with that any smaller reserve than that.
in US unless airspace is restricted or visibility is bad you can takeoff and land without permission from anyone. You can fly cross country without ever talking to anyone on the radio (doesn’t make much sense but it is allowable). The permit he was talking about is with Cuba (and if you cross any international border you have customs paperwork/process to deal with)
hopefully I can get back on the blog later but nite for now
Tiger297 – I don’t have a plane now thanks to a divorce. That thing was just too small to sleep in. I had a M20K Turbo Mooney but had to sell it. I also had a Piper Arrow first and sold it with about 300 hours time to get the Mooney. I’m a few years from getting another but I will more than likely get another Mooney. Fantastic 200 mph airplanes. Plus it had a 900+ mile range which made traveling easier.
yeah mooney is what i want specifically for the range but my guess is a 182 will be my next step (maybe a 205/6) but probably can’t afford the annual on much more than that
I totally didn’t mean it any way but sympathetically! I know you’re a military guy, so I suspect you have seen too many funerals- didn’t mean to offend!

I agree about the jazz/Dixieland funeral CAB. Dave Bromberg did a great song about that 40 years ago called Dying Crapshooter’s Blues. Very funny.

So you have to get a permit to land your plane somewhere? Ha, obviously you can’t just take off whenever you want and just land somewhere, I guess…
Forgive my inquiries…I like to make up stories in my head before I go to bed, and sometimes there’s a pilot in there…
