Braves host prospects for rookie development week – updated with roster
The Braves have invited 26 of their top prospects for a new week-long rookie development camp starting Tuesday and going through Saturday at Turner Field.
They will work out each morning on the field with both Braves major and minor league coaches who live in the area, but the primary focus will be on their off-the-field development.
“It’s really just to get them exposed to the environment here and the place that hopefully they’re going to be in the next few years,” Braves director of player development Kurt Kemp said. “(It’s about) getting them in the stadium and in the clubhouse and around the community, around the staff, an enrichment program to hopefully aid in the process of them developing into major league players.”
Among those invited to attend are top pitching prospects Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado, Arodys Vizcaino and position players like Matt Lipka, Tyler Pastornicky and Edward Salcedo.
The Braves plan to hold this event every year going forward. Kemp said it’s modeled after what Major League Baseball does with its Rookie Career Development program each winter when four players from each team are invited to Leesburg, Va. to attend a workshop about working with the media, handling finances, security, etc. Among the Braves who just attended that last week are Craig Kimbrel, Freddie Freeman, Mike Minor and Teheran.
The Braves have invited speakers to meet with the prospects every afternoon. Among them will be a public relations specialist, new sports psychologist hired by the Braves, Geoff Miller, and some of the Braves major league players. Tim Hudson, Brian McCann and Jason Heyward are scheduled to speak to the prospects on Thursday and Chipper Jones on Saturday.
As a group, they’ll make two community appearances, visit the Martin Luther King Center on Thursday and also attend the Georgia Tech basketball game Wednesday, the Hawks game on Friday and Thrashers game on Saturday.

While I enjoy reading you articles I see no point in your continued comments about the weather and our inability to deal with it. We don’t see this often and don’t have the equipment or experience that you folks had up north so please keep it to yourself. Remember you live here now so try to acclimate as best you can. We really have a pretty good way of life in spite of what they taught you in school.

Awesome news. CR do you have any good news on Nate McLouth so far this offseason? If so, please share, I feel if we want to be successful this season him or Schafer must be a vital part of our lineup. We didnt have any power from left or center last year and we gotta change that up. Any other information on some off season work outs? Will Freeman be starting at first on opening day? Im ready for the daily blogs to start rolling around again.

Even through Terehan has only 40 innings in AA, he was one of four players sent to MLB’s development program. The other three are major league players. Sounds like the Braves think Terehan may make his ML debut in the not too distant future.

Contrary to the opinion of the many negative bloggers who write here regularly, the Braves really do have their business together. They know what they are doing and part of that is they have the big picture in mind…posibilities and limitations. We just get to enjoy their product…or complain. I say “GO BRAVES!” We eagerly await spring training and the new season.

It really makes me wonder how in the world rookie players from “yesteryear” who were treated like dirt when they arrived in the majors by everyone on the team and in management were able to achieve any level of success. Think Queen: “under pressure.”
Now it seems baseball has come to its senses and is doing everything possible to help the “kids” succeed. This rookie development camp seems like a good way for the Braves to have a better chance of cashing in on their investments down the road.

Carroll: An interview suggestion you or DOB may want to consider sometime this season – interview some retired players about how it was for them as rookies coming up to the bigs and how they had to “learn the ropes.” Ask them to compare it to the way rookies are treated nowadays. Oooooh, My Little Pony backpacks are soooo cruel to rookies and all living things!!

I love the Braves Proactive approach to getting some of the players feet wet BEFORE they are needed at the Major League level. I think this will take some of the tendency to be Starstruck when they eventually get a call-up. It’s also nice they are helping set them up to be successful in areas other than on the field. Class organization….
