There may be less pressure in the 8 hole, but there are definitely more fastballs for strikes in the 2 hole in front of Chipper, Uggla, Mac, and Heyward.

Bat, what do you think about the Scoring Probability charts showing that the chance of scoring a runner from 2nd with 1 out being basically a wash (slighlty less) than the chance of scoring a runner from 1st with 0 outs?
Do you think the bunt is always unjustified, or are there instances (a singles hitter like Infante on deck, or facing a pitcher like Halladay/Lincecum) where you think bunting the runner over to 2nd base is a viable strategy?

Just a few names of guys that helped us win a championship in 1995 and what they were getting paid versus what Nate McLouth is getting paid in 2010-11 for his, uh, services:
TnBrian: If you really want to view it properly, you should look at it in perspective. I know you mentioned as much in passing, but it is more substantial than you think. McLouth isn’t making near as much compared to his peers as Justice was (And Chipper was in his rookie season… terrible comparison point).

I’m not surprised it’s a wash. But no I don’t think it’s always unjustified, I would bunt a guy over, just depends on the situation and player. In game chess match all that.
Obviously I got my feathers ruffled by the comment someone made that Chipper should not hit second because he cannot bunt. Or that the two hitter needs to be able to bunt period, like that is some kind of overly important skill. I don’t see it, for me just get on base, handle the bat well, not a high strike out guy.
Lincecum v Halladay in the playoffs…. top of the first … lead off guy gets on……. bunt him over ..try to score one run to draw first blood…… I can see that, not sure I would do it though. Just an opinion

Bat,
Surprised me a bit that the odds of getting a run scoring double, two hits, hit and an error, etc. with 0 outs was the same (slightly higher) as getting a run scoring single, etc. with one out. I thought it would be the other way around–not by a great margin–but certainly not less of a chance of scoring from 2nd with one out. Almost makes one have to redefine “Runner In Scoring Position.”
The intersting thing I found in looking through all those studies was the recurrent theme that bunting with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out was found to be a sound strategy. Getting the runner to 3rd with 1 out, the possibility of scoring multiple runs, and eliminating the double play possibility and all that, versus going for the big inning. What a great game.
The ratio of extra base hits to singles incurred in MLB must be greater than I thought

Maybe you know the answer to this Carroll; How come Billy Wagner is still on the 40 man roster and hasn’t submitted his retirement papers yet. Is there any possibility that he will be coming back? I just imagine what the Braves bullpen wpould look like if he did. Put together with our starters I think even the Phillies would be envious.

That was addressed somewhere on the blog yesterday- Billy’s agent said they just have not gotten around to the filing yet and Frank Wren has pointed out they do not yet need the roster spot, so there is no hurry to do it right now. Cabravesfan – I have been skeptical about Wagner retiring for a year. You just don’t see players have a year like he did and then hang it up. Plus he is two saves from being the all time leader for lefties in MLB. You know the usual reasons – more money, doesn’t want to go through Spring Training etc. but he keeps insisting he is retired. Didn’t he pay his agent about $500,000 last year. He could have the paperwork done for him in a few days.
Something is up.
Braveheart
December 30th, 2010
4:45 pm
Maybe I’m wrong about this, but can you really just waive Wagner? Isn’t his money guaranteed next year if he decides to come back because he finished 50+ games last year? So if you waive him, and he decides to play somewhere else, wouldn’t the Braves have to pay him $6.5 million to play for someone else, and not get anything back in a trade?

Braveheart

4:53 pm
I’m not sure. I could be wrong, but I think it was a $6.5 mil team option with a $250K buyout if he didn’t finish 50 games last season. Once he finished his 50th game, there was no longer a team option or a buyout, just a guaranteed $6.5 million if he decided to pitch in 2011.
cabravesfan
December 30th, 2010
4:55 pm
The buy-out is only $250K, which really is not that much. But the paperwork is really just a formality- there is no real need to file retirement papers (not sure what that would mean in terms of the buy out, if they would still have to pay it, but again, it’s not that much)…I am convinced he’s not coming back.

We’ve been through the Wagner thing quite a bit. From what I know, it’s just a matter of when on the paperwork….keylargo, I will tell you Wagner’s reasons for retiring didn’t have anything to do with money (he’s made plenty) or spring training. It was about a) being away from his family for extended periods (and there’s no getting around that) and b) the mental and phyical pressure of having to prepare to close out games every day (there’s no getting around that either.) He seemed to me like a guy who is ready to give up the grind and who is missing time with his family. Now why he hasn’t filed the paperwork yet, I don’t know. That seems weird to me too.

from .432 with a runner on first and no outs to .414 with a runner on second and one out. As these values represent an overall average of all games, one can imagine that it many cases it surely increases the probability

If you are gonna play the odds then the best approach is to always play them not disregard them at times on a hunch. You have no idea B4 hand that playing them in that situation will not work and no proof that ignoring them will work. Playing them down the line gives you the highest success rate long term, anything else will not . You may gert lucky on the time(s) you ignore them but you have no way of knowing that B4 hand. It’s like poker, I just luv it when I find a player who ignores them and plays by the seat of his pants. He might get lucky once in a while but over time I will clean his clock.

That’s an interesting point, key. I hadn’t even considered that. I forget how ridiculously tight our payroll seems to be… Down to the last six figures, and scared to keep a guy like Sori around for five minutes for fear of writing a check…
I can’t see ‘em trading the guy. They went down there, asked him to play for 6. They signed a contract with an option, so they knew then it was a possibilty. I think they’d have to find the money elsewhere.

You’re right, nolie. Thing is, the “odds” can fluctuate based on game conditions, I would guess. Most notably, who’s running, who’s laying down the bunt, who’s on deck and in the hole, who’s pitching, etc etc.
But, I am not a fan of bunting, generally. And it especially burns me when teams do it in the early innings.
nolie

another way to look at those charts is that since it does lessen the odds of scoring a greater number of runs, in the long run it will in fact lead to less runs scored in a complete game if you did it regularly. Studies show that a great number of games are won with the run total scored in just one inning, so anything that increases the chance of more runs being scored(not bunting) increases the odds of winning.
Yes there are a few late inning situations when one run will win the game and less favorable options are available that is a good tactic to sacrifice, but the regular use of that approach as a general strategy instead of a specific tactic is counterproductive in the long run

Notes: McCann embracing yoga
ATLANTA — Determined to get into optimal shape, Brian McCann has put his macho pride aside and entered the world of yoga.
Having already added noticeable muscle to his upper body during regular offseason workouts with his older brother, Brad, and former Brave Mark DeRosa, McCann decided a few weeks ago to begin strengthening his abdominal and lower back muscles by attending yoga classes.
“I just can’t imagine Brian McCann in a yoga outfit,” McCann’s good friend, Jeff Francoeur, playfully said. “Sleeping in tights for an hour doesn’t count as yoga.”
Since coming to the Majors in 2005, McCann, who will turn 24 next month, has lost much of his baby fat. Still, it’s hard to picture, this 6-foot-3, 225-pound All-Star catcher attending yoga classes that are primarily filled by women, some of whom are twice his age.
“It’s awkward,” McCann said with a smile.
After strengthening his shoulders and back, McCann felt the best way to increase his flexibility would be to begin attending these yoga classes with his brother, Brad, who is currently playing in the Royals farm system.
“We were trying to get stronger and we’ve accomplished that,” McCann said. “Now we’re trying to stay flexible, stay loose, don’t get too tight.”
By increasing his flexibility, McCann believes he’ll have greater range behind the plate and not be bothered with the late-season fatigue he felt in his hips this past season. As for the greater upper body strength, he hopes it helps him improve a homer total that dipped from 24 to 18 over the course of the past two seasons.
One of DeRosa’s high school friends is a professional trainer, who every two weeks has sent this trio a DVD that includes a specific workout program aimed at adding upper-body strength.
“We’ve stuck to it and I feel like it’s helped me out tremendously,” McCann said. “This is the best shape I’ve ever been in.”
