I had a nightmare last night that we traded JJ to the Yankees for Roger Clemens…Yes, i am aware there are problems with the timeline but it was really scary! I even dreamed that I posted a really long angry blog rant about why it was such a terrible trade. I think i spend too much time on the blog!

I realized that they could go another way with all that money too – swap Lowe for a bad contract SS with a year left on his deal. That way if Lipka or someone else works out, they wont be blocked in the future. That would still leave one position to fill with a lot of cash inspite of paying the increased arb. salary of JJ.
Couple of different ways to go – but unless a couple of our guys fall on their faces in 2011, it’s not a bad situation ahead.

You can add Ryan Howard to the Phillies woes coming up. While he is not a liablility now, with his contract, the 250 pounder is going to become one in about 2014.
$20M this year then his 5 year $125M contract kicks in.
12:$20M, 13:$20M, 14:$25M, 15:$25M, 16:$25M, 17:$23M club option ($10M buyout)

heylargo- correct, howard’s contract is pretty nuts. the phillies future does not seem very bright. 2/3 of the team are over 30, and not many are coming off contract in the next year or so. the team is intact for years to come, and with all that money gonna be spent on them when they are a few years older.. the sacrifice they took to win these last few years.

i agree about the phills, hopefully all these huge contracts and aging players will come back to bite them in a couple years.I think the Nats are going to be a strong team by then the way they have been so aggressive with free agents and they have a good farm.

Musial is 90 years old. His health is failing pretty rapidly. I doubt it’s him selling anything on-line.
At BEST, it’s some of his family and the money is going to him. At worst, it’s some agent or agency or dealer who somehow got rights to a name.

Robert- Why should I have known you’d be the doubter? Is it because Stan was Bobby Cox’s favorite player and he got a signed photo for retierment?
I wouldn’t worry – it’s real. Been dealing with autographs for more than 25 years and can authenticate. Wouldn’t have suggested it for a Christmas present if I wasn’t certain.
Fergie Jenkins is another one and I’ve actually met him and talked to him about the whole subject.
Like I said some of them are still around and I’d much rather get it from the than through Steiner Sports. For some it’s one of their only ways to supplement their income.
As for him being 90 years old – doesn’t mean he can’t sign his name. It was likely a family member who addressed the package though – but it was still nice to see one addressed by hand in script. Not so sure many people even know who to write anymore.

Only about 364 more shopping days till Christmas. Don’t wait till the last minute this year…
not surprising if Uggla does want a bit more money after seeing some of this years contracts. as I have said B4 he could likely do better by going to arb and then entering free agency. so even 5/65 or5/70 would not be too bad. prolly should not guarantee more than 5 years though

cab- Don’t worry – there’s always hope. I was a Bucs fan for ten of the twelve consecutive losing seasons in the 80’s and 90’s – when they had the worst record in the history of sports franchises. At that point in time they’d had two winning seasons – Even had Steve Young and lost. At least the Niners have won Superbowls. They might suck now, but at least there was something sometime. MIght happen again.

cab – A firster is like all those people who were griping when the Braves were in first place this year and had a 12 game lead over the Phillies. It wasn’;t a big enough lead for them (of course, it DID turn out to not be a big enough lead, but that’s immaterial). A Firster is a someone who no matter how good their team is believe that they could always be better and nothing will ever make them happy.

My team is neither in first place or very good, but they are much better then 5-9…they lost to the Falcons, Saints and Eagles by a total of 8 points…and lost to Carolina…I just want them to play as well as they can, instead of watching them cost themselves games by being stupid week after week…
