Overcast conditions early, first day movement, some bad swings and poof. All out. Tremlett seems to have hit the right spots and got some movement. All 10 wickets were of catches behind the bat. Go figure.
The weather has cleared up now and England seem quite comfortable.Mitchell Johnson really isnt getting his Perth swing – not yet at least.
Oh and Mike Atherton rubbished Eden Gardens. Moe’s Dad-in-law wouldnt be happy at all.
Steve McP–They have looked so bad this test series. Quite amazing. England only trails by 46 runs with all ten wickets remaining. Let’s hope the Aussie bowlers are half as inept as their bats.
I attended the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne several years ago. Memorable for several things, my wife (who is American) falling asleep during the first session and the subsequent damage done to my credit card balances as I foolishly said, “sorry you are not enjoying the game would you rather go shopping in town?” and also Steve Waugh failing to walk when he snicked behind, which would have put Australia in huge trouble chasing a small target on the last day.
SB–Even more than my father-in-law, I have a friend coming tomorrow who will take great umbrage at any slight to Eden Gardens. Although, after their lights went out against Sri Lanka last year, it is difficult to defend. Certainly not the best pitch.
Watching it on an online stream. Sky sports coverage with all the usual suspects. http://www.aymo.net/
Watching a test at the MCG must have been an awesome experience. They were comparing it to watching a game at the Nou Camp. Wish i get to do at least one of these (after watching Arsenal at Emirates though).
And England go ahead, still with no wickets down. Have to go to bed very shortly, have the neighbours coming round tomorrow and have promised them a “full English breakfast” – English bacon and sausages (don’t tell the food police at immigration) with mushrooms, eggs, baked beans and black pudding. Hope that they appreciate that I am giving up prized possessions (that would be the bacon and sausages) for them.

Nick, I had a feeling the one talking about his grandkid was not you. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, as well!
Nah, it was me. Just wanted to point out how easy it is to put up stuff in someone elses’s name. It really irks me to see regulars using other names especially if they want to take a jab at someone. To me, if it’s worth saying, it’s worth claiming.
richbrave – it looks like I could have snow in any of my three previous locales today – NY, Richmond and Atlanta. I have to make due with the lovely LA rain instead…although it appears to be clearing up after raining most of the night…
nevermind i found it. It says he expects the Braves to reach a deal by the 1st week of January. But also notes that he is holding our for more money right now.
wonder how much more he wants. I figured something like this would have happened after all the big deal in free agency. Him and Adrian Beltre should recieve simaler contracts.
VBF – I believe that has to be Uggla’s agent. Uggla would be set for life and playing in his own backyard. I believe the agent has said he thinks he can get a few million more but Uggla will put a stop to it soon and sign for slightly more than the $60M. JMO
IVAN – Don’t know about Santa, but family and friends were very good to me. Got an autographed copy opf Pete Van Wieran’s book, which also was signed by an old Atlanta Black Crackers’ player and I also got a Stan Musial signed baseball.
Lots of the old timers and old HOFers didn’t play during the huge contract years of the past few decades and have their own sites where they sell memorabilia for the revenue. Stan is one. Y’all should check these out iof you’re in the market for signed items – they authenitcate them and sell for about a thid of what you pay if you go through MLB.
They even sent the ball in a box that was addressed by hand – in script. When was the last time we saw that?
VaBraves – The Braves will pay him what they feel they can afford. It’s been widely reported that both sides want it to happen and it’s close to fruition.
I still think the slowdown in negotiations is because of Christmas holidays – no one is wanting to negotiate – hell, Wren’s out scuba diving with his family and I imagine Uggla is not concerned as he’s with his family, too.
It’ll work out and the Braves will pay what they can afford. Lord knows with the pitching in the minors, they won’t be paying a premium to their rotation anytime soon.
thats a great point about the pitching. We do have Huddy and Lowe for 2 more seasons. Huddy has a 9 million option for 2013 will prolly buy him out if our young pitching goes as planned.
Hanson isnt a free agent until 2016. Jurrjens 2014.
VaBraves – I still believe that if a. Teheran OR Delgado (or for that matter, Beachy and Minor) are looking good at this season’s end, or b. that Jurrjens returns to form, that JJ becomes trade bait at the end of the year. I bet he never gets that long term deal from Atlanta.
In addition to all the talented pitching coming from the Farm, in 2013 (minus Hudson’s option if exercised), they still have Lowe’s $15 mil and Chipper’s $14 mil coming off the books in 2013. They will also have another $14 mil coming off after this year with the “loss” of Nate and Kawakami.
Braves are looking good and Wren’s strategy of not selling off the kids in the minors will pay off quite nicely.
I always thought that about Jurrjens. You have to think out of Teheran/Delgado/Minor/Beachy that 2 of them will meet there expectations and be successful. Being realistic we cant expect them all to be successful. Jurrjens returns to healthy great form. Then we field offers for him. He always reminded me of Odalis Perez not performance wise but in the fact we traded him for Gary Sheffield, i see something simaler, or we could land a package of 3-4 prospects.
I could see one of JJ and Lowe or both on the market for next year. All depends on how Beachy and Minor do like Lew said. Also depenging on if Medlin can come back from his injury and the development of Teheran, Delgado, and Viz. .
Nick Cafardo says Uggla holding out for more money than the 5 year 61 mil. He still thinks deal will get done.
Just to be clear – Nick Cafardo just says talks have slowed down – which is nothing spectacular considering that it’s around Christmas and Wren was away on vacation. He doesnt say anything about the money.
The webpage linked above – a branch of NBC sports – thinks he is holding out for more money. Make of that what you wish.
If Lowe has another solid season he could for sure be on the market, with only 1 year remaing on his deal he would be eaiser to trade. And i’m sure there would be a handful of teams willing to pay around 10-12 million of his final 15 million to have him. We wouldnt recieve much in return but freeing up 10 mil or so makes sense. I just know one thing we are in very good postion with our pitching for a long time.
VaBraves – Well, if Chipper DOES retire after this year, they’ll certainly have the money to sign a very good replacement – especially not having to spend $$$$$ on pitching.
VaBraves – I still don’t think the Braves view Lowe and his contract as a detriment like so many Denizens do. But if they DID want to trade him next year because he had another solid season, why would they eat several million of his salary?
I’m frankly not seeing it. Nate goes after this year. KK is gone already (if not his salry). That’s $14 million right there. If Chipper leaves, yet another $14 mil. Why would they need to trade Lowe?
I am inclined to side with Lew on the this one. Depending on the season that Lowe has next year teams would likely be willing to pick up his entire obligations. If the Braves kick in money then the return they get prospect wise will increase.
I like the job Wren has done. It’s will have taken him four or five years, but the Braves will be a force long after the Phillies’ lineup falls apart due to age and infirmity (and several of them might not make it past this year).
McLouth gone 7 mil
KK gone 7 mil
Maybe Chipper 13 mil
AGon 2.5 mil
almost 30 million freed up.
Yeah, but that also means we will also need a SS, a CF, and a 3B, and without any emerging options in the minors at those positions (maybe at SS), we will only have $30 million to fix SS, CF, and 3B (or LF if Prado goes to 3B). The 3B that would be leaving also happens to be one of the two or three big box office draws the team has, so that’s something to consider as well.
I know many here think I rag on the Phillies (and before them the Mets) and I do, but not without a basis for my arguments.
Look at the Phillies’ infield – Howard has missed 18+ games (20 last year) twice in his five year career.
Chase Utley (three consecutive regressive seasons) has missed 15 to 47 games (47 in 2010) 3 times in six years.
Jimmy Rollins has missed 25 -74games (74 last year) two of the past three years, with a chronic calf problem. His OBP the past two years were .280 something and .320. Speed doesn’t help if you don’t get on base. A .243 BA won’t get you on base very much.
Placido Palanco ended the season last year with a broken elbow. He has missed 20 or more games four of the past five years (30 last year).
The Phillies have some serious question marks, too.
Yeah, but that also means we will also need a SS, a CF, and a 3B,
Which is why this a critical year for Schafer and JJ (and consequently Teheran @ AAA). A SP trade would go a long way in helping fill at least one of these vacancies. Someone like JJ after a good year could get a lot more in next year’s market than, say, a Lowe. And if Schafer can wrest control of CF, we have to go out and get one player from the agent pool for the 3rd (in case of Chipper’s retirement).

Also depenging on if Medlin can come back from his injury and the development of Teheran, Delgado, and Viz. .

I think this is gonna be Chipper’s final season. He’s my favorite player of all time, but I really hope he retires after this.

Chipper has a vesting option for 2013 season at 7 million if he plays 123 games in 2012. 13 mil a season for the next 2 tho.

I am inclined to side with Lew on the this one. Depending on the season that Lowe has next year teams would likely be willing to pick up his entire obligations. If the Braves kick in money then the return they get prospect wise will increase.

Next offseason could be very exciting.
McLouth gone 7 mil
KK gone 7 mil
Maybe Chipper 13 mil
AGon 2.5 mil
almost 30 million freed up.

I like the job Wren has done. It’s will have taken him four or five years, but the Braves will be a force long after the Phillies’ lineup falls apart due to age and infirmity (and several of them might not make it past this year).

Not to mention the $$$ Amaro will have tied up in the old and infirm. Philly is only a $160 mil market when winning.

I agree. Alot of fans need to look at the team a bit longer and they’ll realize how set we are.
