I don’t know what kind of numbers Freeman will put up next year but there are a few reasons to be optimistic about his future. The first is his age. Very few players put up his numbers at AAA at 20 years old. The ones that have most times have become stars eventually. Another reason to be excited is his defense. Way above average at 1B. Again not usual for a 20 year old. Lastly his tools. The scouts love the swing and potential. He looks like a very good player to me. Will it happen next year? We will see.

The 2011 Braves season will hinge on whether they have a hole at 3B that creates a hole in LF and whether they can fill the hole in CF. Almost forgot the potential hole at 1B. Looks like a team with multiple question marks and not one that is ready to challenge Philadelphia.

There is an insider only article up on ESPN by KC Joyner that asserts that Matt Ryan is the best QB in the NFC South. Right in time for Monday Night Football. Wonder if this or Roddy White will be the main feature on the Siants bulletin board. Hmm.

I see chad is again trying his best to rile up folks about McCann. I dont understand why folks encourage that fellow. He goes away for a few days and the back to the same topic. Like he has the tourettes or something.

If all GM’s follow a similar evaluation scheme, then trading our pitching prospects for position players may not be that easy (or a trade without the feeling we gave up too much).

sri, I don’t follow that system of ranking prospects, but it makes some sense. I go back and forth on whether or not it’s better to have a system chocked full of position players than pitchers, given the attrition rate as you said. Balance, of course, is pretty important. I think the Braves system will most likely be in the Top 10 this year, but it’s certainly a concern that they don’t have a lot of position player talent.

I love how Frank Wren is quoted as saying that the organization sets its payroll so as to be competitive and profitable … and some folks rip him for not throwing around “just one more million” to make the team better.

It sounds like Liberty lets Wren and Co run the Braves since the Braves are profitable. No interference (like was recently quoted from one of the Phillies owners) in player hiring or trading.

Despite the poor performance from 2008, Braves have built a pretty competitive team year in and year out for most of 2 decades, including a ridiculous run of 14 straight division titles.

And, they appear to be poised to make another long run based on the young talent starting to come up to the bigs.

If the Braves want more payroll, they need to develop more revenue … not spend into the red. Since they’re competitive with their existing payroll, why throw, e.g., $126 Million at Werth? Would that really make so much difference that it would be worth the cash? If the Braves ran at a $10 Million loss for those seven seasons, would a WS really make up for that loss?

The Brave’s farm system is stacked with arms. Now that FF is up its a giant air pocket re: offense.

That cannot continue if they expect to be competitive with a sub 90mm payroll especially in the NL East.

They will need a LF, a CF and a SS by Dec 2011. They have little to chose from in the minors in terms of credible/proven offense powerhouses.

Schafer is a wild card who has not played ball in 2 yrs. Hardly something you can hang your hat on.

They a few smallish/slap hitting SS prospects in the minors but that is about it.

klaus:

How many clubs today stock-pile ML-ready players on the farm, and keep them there because they can’t beat out the players on the 40-man??

bring me the head of A more important question is whether the Phillies have now become so good as to deny the possibility of the NL wildcard coming from the East.

or have the braves improved enough to overtake the phillies?

dont forget, the phillies lost their top offensive performer and are replacing him with a rookie, as well as adding cliff lee.

the braves kept their pitching staff mostly intact while acquiring one of the better power hitters in the game.

keep in mind that based on the braves’ and phil’s run differential last season, the braves were only 2 games worse than the phillies.

an improved run differential and/or a little luck for the braves, and a mostly static run differential for the phillies might mean we have caught up with them.

Next offseason, there is going to be a shortage of top quality on the free agent market. Carpenter and Wainwright have options that will mostly be picked up. Then you have Mark Buerhle and Sabathia with the opt-out clause. That’s it. We are likely to use our pitching surplus to get a few position player prospects and even starters. That should be enough to beef up our farm, a little at least.

Well JOE we see the same things, but I see some holes over in PHILLY……bull-pen…….oh wait I forgot, four PHILLIES starters will pitch winning complete games almost every time out. BRAD LIDGE will suddenly become the BILLY WAGNER PHILLY hasn’t had for years now. Bench…….??? Top hitters……..??? WERTH replacement??? Injuries like those of last year, and come-backs from them by starting position players ROLLINS, UTLEY, HOWARD???

JOE, root for the PHILLIES if that’s your preference. No need to point out the BRAVES weaknesses. We all too aware of them. Anything of value to add????

jeffrey d, I think O.J. was alluding to the second “m” in “sub 90mm payroll.” And I’m kinda curious myself, what is the second “m” for? There aren’t two m’s in million. That reads like it’s payroll below 90 millimeters.

DAP

abwright, like i said, im no expert on run differential, but it looks like to me that every +10 in run differential is worth an extra win over 81. braves had a +109 run differential, so they should have had roughly 11 wins + 81 wins = 92 wins. (baseball reference has their pythagorean record at 93 wins, so its not exact, but i have to do it that way, cause i dont know the real way)

based on run differential, braves should have won 93 in 2010, and the phils should have won 95. actual wins were 91, and 97. so the phils beat theirs by 2 and we missed ours by 2. if the opposite had happened, braves could have won the division in 2010.

anyways, i think the braves and the phillies are extremely close based on run differential for 2011. the braves do have a chance to win the east.

I want to ask you a question, since you are with the team on a regular basis, about McCann. Is he a team leader. Does he get in the face of a team mate that makes an error or does not run out a pop up. I have been watching the last couple of years and do not see much emotion. It seems that there leadership comes from bench players or rookie instead of veterans. They said it is Chipper’s team but down the strech chipper was absent from the dugout. Where is McCann to get these young pitchers deeper into games. I dont see leadership that you except from a top player on your team.

DOB & Others . . .

In banking/finance, one “m” is for thousand, and two “m”s is for million.

$90M = $90 thousand

$90MM = $90 million

Journalists don’t use this, but bankers, etc, do. It occasionally creeps into other writing because some folks get used to it in their jobs and it comes out naturally at other times.

(The Roman numeral for 1,000 is “M”. The Roman numeral for one million is an M with a bar over it).

Exactly my point, that is why i ask David O Brien. He is around them and knows what type of player McCann is. If he was a true leader in the club house, I would change my view of him. He maybe a player that I would have different views about. His numbers alone and value by stats alone to not justify his as a elite player. Also it should not be determined by the spot the plays on the field.

The safer thing to me would be to make him earn it rather than hand it to him. I’d like to see Kimbrel avoid being Devine’d as much as possible. _ Braveheart

I don’t get the angst over Kimbrel. It would seem if he is closing early next year it’s because he earned it. Earned it by the way he pitched last year and in spring training and the role he has been training for in the minors.

There was a game last year when Cox pulled Kimbrel from a dicey situation and I wondered on the blog if Devine was on Cox’s mind when he did so. If so I think that time has passed. Kimbrel seemed more confidant towards the end of last season and finished strong. .5/bb and 2 K’s an inning…….. 4+ innings and 1 walk in the playoffs. We’ll see.

Venters is more of the sure thing and proven commodity,………… He’s shown he doesn’t get too full of himself when things are going good, and doesn’t get too down when things are going against him.

The game where he blew the run down, but stayed in and worked out of it, convinced me he is one mentally tough guy. Love that……….

Everywhere I see mention of Braves’ Baseball, the mood is always greater than positive about the trade for Dan Uggla. I disagree with this. I think that he is a good power hitter, especially considering how his home run and rbi production rank compared to other second sackers, contemporary and historically. I cannot be excited about this, though, for various reasons.

First, it was defense that cost us the opportunity to advance in the playoffs last year. By putting Uggla in at second, we make the defense at that position weaker. By moving Prado to left, we make that position weaker. That is weaker defense at two positions because of one move.

Second, and maybe I am just crotchety, but I think that Uggla has far too many unproductive AB’s. I have always been of the mindset that K’s are the most overrated stat for a pitcher and most underrated stat for a hitter. Prado provided All-Star production from second base last year. That was not the position we needed to “upgrade.”

Third, we are not sure of how Chipper is going to be after recovering from injury this year. Although we still have Prado and Uggla that can play 2nd and 3rd, we had an easier fix with Prado and Infante, if ever an emergency 3rd bagger was needed or if the game was out of hand and we wanted to give Mr. Jones the rest of the night off.

Last, the outfield is and has been the place where the Braves don’t measure up to the rest of the league. I am not sure of the market for big hitting outfielders this off season, but typically there are more plentiful big bats in the outfield than at second base. Supply and demand suggests that, thereofre, a big outfield bat should cost less than a big second base bat. Were there no outfielders available in our price range that fit the bill? Is the plan to trade Uggla for an outfield bat? Is Uggla even tradeable?

These are my questions. I likelly wont see any answers, as there are so many comments that it is hard to look back and see them, but I am curious what others think of my thoughts.

Steve from OH

cbf–Yes! And even so, it is extremely unfair to punish an entire program like that for the transgressions of few. How can Carroll or Tressel or whoever monitor 100 kids on a college campus? It’s impossible. And to make the others suffer like they did at USC is a terrible thing to do. The NCAA needs to do some serious thinking about their rules and regulations, and soon.

“BMac has been THE best catcher in the majors over the last 4 seasons…Silver Sluggers are piling up as are All-Star game appearances…” P-Town

Let’s not get carried away here. Mac has been the best HITTING catcher in the majors the last 4 seasons.

Mac’s not even the best defensive catcher on his own team.

Besides, Buster Posey will probably interrupt some of those silver slugger and all-star appearances the next couple years unless Mac goes off. But generic voters are going to vote for the recognizable name and winning the ROY and the WS in the same year, usually makes the voting skewed in the short term.

Mac will still go to the all-star game. But it wouldn’t shock me at all if Posey is voted in next year, based on what he did this past year.

That is unless you think the city of Atlanta will band together and pile of the votes for Mac? My guess is SF fans will be a little more die-hard about it.

The thing is, almost all of what USC got punished so harshly for are things that Reggie’s parents supposedly did. Not Reggie, not the school, his parents. And none of the allegations have anything to do directly with the school or anyone assoicated with the school. (Nor did they have anything to do with Reggie’s ability to play football.) So just to recap: USC gets a 2 year bowl ban and a reduction of 30 scholarships over 3 years because a player’s parents were involved with an agent, but Cam Newton’s dad openly shops his kid to schools for $180,000 but doesn’t tell his son- and we all believe that one- so there is no punishment and Ohio State gets basically slapped on the wrist because the players “didn’t know they were breaking the rules”…which USC was told was no excuse. Did I leave anything out?? OK- getting ranty again. Stopping now.

Steve-

I think the suspensions are just stupid. It is their own property but apparently they can’t profit off their football abilities, even though everyone else does.

cabravesfan – I don’t think the penalty issues about the Cam Newton situation have been dealt with yet. I think that ruling was just about eligibility. I could be wrong, but I think what has happened so far with Auburn was from a different NCAA unit. And isn’t there also an ongoing FBI investigation?

Rob,
You have some catching up to do on this subject as it has been covered ad nausuem on the blog. If you cannot be bothered to keep up with the blog, we cannot be bothered to give you a more thorough response.

Thank you SO much for posting that article!!! :D I’d read a smaller story about that shortly after it happened…really enjoyed reading more about it.

I ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ BMac! :D Such a great guy. And I’m so happy for that little boy, especially now that he’s cancer-free!!

cabravesfan leaders don’t necessarily have to be the screaming, get in your face type of guy. Mac doesn’t strike me as that type of guy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a leader of this team

Very true. Matt Diaz said BMac was without question the leader of the Braves—DOB posted the quotes…I think it was 2009.

Cool if this is true and he is the leader than you keep him and build team around him.

MIBravesFan-

The problem (for me at least- although I think a lot of people feel the same way) is in the explaination- that He was eligible because he “didn’t know” what his dad was doing. With the Reggie Bush case (and I keep using that as an example because it’s the one I am most familiar with) USC showed pretty good evidence that they were unaware of what his parents were doing and were told that not knowing was not an excuse for it to happen. So my issue is that even if Cam didn’t know (really trying not to laugh every time I tyoe that) it should not have mattered to the NCAA…he should have been ruled ineligible if they were using the same guidelines they did with USC. But since it was right before one of the biggest games of the year, suddenly it was OK…

DAMN-IT! YOU PEOPLE NEED TO STOP MAKING ME RANT!!!

Bat – Not only has slavery been abolished, but they did away with the Reserve Clause, too.

I agree that is was not the best thing they could have done. I have been saying they needed an outfield bat for years. However if they are not willing to spend more or give up prospects, this is how it turns out.

It would seem everyone is ticked off with the NCAA, as well they should be. They are trying to control an uncontrollable situation and at the same time defend the indefensible.

Sorry cabravesfan, not trying to do that, and not defending Cam Newton or the NCAA ruling. I’m just not sure that what has happened so far is the end of it. If/when “the other shoe” drops, it could be bad news for Auburn, too.
