Well Eric …maybe if you can get someone on the blog to vouch for your ‘hot’ assumption then you’ll know you’re right… if ya can’t then good luck guessing lol. I’ll stick with my sports, food and music talk and stray away from the hot or not game, ha.
yeah 13.5 mil a year is a great deal for a pitcher the caliber of Grienke, but it doesnt mean we have finacial problems… We have reached our payroll limit. Also we value our prospects and future, we can compete year in and year out while still having a bright future, the Phillies may field the better team but there future commitments to players will effect the team in a negative way in a few years, all the prospects they have traded too.
With the Phils having around 152 mil payroll and the Mets 135 mil I say were doing pretty damn good considering we have 40-50 million less.

E-Brave, I had to take a peek at the magic stand…..Does it have a place for water? I couldn’t make out in the photos.

ryan c no rotation in baseball can stand against a rotation anchored by the 2 best starting pitchers in the game.
One of their guys might get hurt…
Sounds like a reasonable path
December 13th, 201010:42 pm
if I were Halladay, coming off a Cy Young season, I would ask for an extension now to match the years that Cliff Lee got.
If the Phillies were smart they would do that to keep clubhouse harmony, but man, speaking of breaking the bank
December 13th, 201010:45 pm
If the Phillies land Lee, I can assure you guys we’ll be in 2nd place and looking at the Wild Card again. I love our rotation as it stands, but no rotation in baseball can stand against a rotation anchored by the 2 best starting pitchers in the game.
Well, why don’t we go ahead and play the season just the same. Sure things in baseball have a tendency to be somewhat less than certain.

December 13th, 201010:47 pm
2 years ago people here would have thought the mets were going to be a powerhouse in the east… youre right we still have to watch these games played out
December 13th, 201010:52 pm
If they sign Lee the only plus side I could see is in three years the Philies owe a 34 year old Ryan Howard $20-25MM, a 36 year old Halladay $20MM, and a 35 year old Cliff Lee for $20MM+…
sounds like a reasonable path (cabravesfan)
Ah, good, we’re on the same plain again. I’m glad VJ got home with the alcohol, finally.
December 13th, 201010:55 pm
MikeInFl Sure things in baseball have a tendency to be somewhat less than certain.
December 13th, 201010:56 pm
I’ve seen it reported that one of the reasons Lee was traded from the Phillies was that his agent said it would be difficult to sign him to an extension. And now he’s thinking of staying for $30 million less? What changed?
December 13th, 201010:57 pm
well i guess I can answer my own question and say being a part of that rotation….what would be an incredible rotation.
December 13th, 201010:59 pm
Carroll, as I said a little while ago, I think they hit the Power Ball a few times.
December 13th, 201011:00 pm
I saw that report to Carroll. Maybe the Philies are throwing up a smokescreen and they are just trying to drive his price of for the Yankees. With the Yankees main rival the RedSox out of the equation for Lee. The Philies might see it in their best interest to drive Lee’s price up some for two reasons: So they don’t look bad in front of their fanbase for not locking Lee up for what could be a reasonable signing and just to make one of the big spenders dig a little deeper in the pocketbooks.
December 13th, 201011:10 pm
If the Philies do get LEE we are in a big time trouble.
December 13th, 201011:12 pm
aybe the Philies are throwing up a smokescreen and they are just trying to drive his price of for the Yankees Lifer
why in the world would they have any interest in doing that? and if they aren’t serious why would they take the chance that he might accept an offer they didn’t really want to give? c’mon now
December 13th, 201011:13 pm
I wonder if FW will respond with a big move if Philly lands Lee.
The Phillies won 4 straight division titles, 2 NL pennants and a WS. I don’t think they should be compared to the Mets.

It’s (almost) official: Lee has reached a tentative agreement with the #Phillies, he is waiting to see if the #Rangers will offer 8yrs. #MLB
From Ken Rosenthal….
No f’in way….
December 13th, 201011:15 pm
I was curious about what Braves officials have said about Andruw Jones possibly coming back to Atlanta. David O’Brien wrote an article, “Fredi G. on McLouth, Andruw and replacing an icon.” O’Brien stated “Jones returning the Braves seems unlikely, based on conversations with others in the organization.”
I was just wondering if there was some hard feelings between Jones and the Braves or something. Maybe he’s asking too much? Although I know he played for about $1.5 mill last year for Chicago.
I really think Jones would be a great fit for the Braves because they need a 4th outfielder with power. The guy hit 19 HRs and drove in 48 runs in 278 ABs. That’s production the Braves outfield badly needs. And if he’s in shape like he was last year, he could play any of the 3 outfield positions.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
That would be an amazing rotation no doubt. Hopefully with Uggla added and J-Hey having a season under his belt we will be a much better offensive team. Seems that for the Phils to make the Lee deal work they need to move money (Blanton/Ibanez). If they move Ibanez they will have to replace 2/3 of that outfield. I guess they figure they can lose a little offense w/ the possibility of putting out one of the best rotations of all time.
Innocent Bystander – I wonder if FW will respond with a big move if Philly lands Lee.
I wish it were like that – but it hasn’t been since the 90’s or early 2000’s. We simply don’t have the financial resources.
December 13th, 201011:17 pm
NSS- Apparently the Rosenthal tweet is from a fake account that has an uppercase “I” in place of the lowercase “l”. Tricky tricky.
December 13th, 201011:18 pm
I wonder where do the Philles have all the financial resources. available it not like they have a major TV network deal in place
I wonder if FW will respond with a big move if Philly lands Lee. NS Steve
what big move? They don’t have the money to add anyone significant
Sorry, Carroll (me @ 11:59), I had to read your comment again. I’m trying to do too many things at once, and as you probably know, most males (not nolie) can’t multi-task.
You were talking about why would Lee sign with the Phillies, from his perspective. I was talking about the same thing from the Phillies perspective.
Remember last year, when they traded him to the Mariners and said it was because they couldn’t afford him when he became a FA? What have they done since then? Signed Halladay and Oswalt.
Now there’s talk about them signing Lee???
December 13th, 201011:21 pm
I didn’t say that Nolie. I was responding/quoting an early post.
Yunel's Frosted Tips
Fox Sports Radio said the Ken Rosenthal twitter is indeed a bogus account………..Phils have not signed him
December 13th, 201011:22 pm
You’re right Innocent Bystander –
The latest from The Real Rosenthal – “I have not tweeted anything new on Lee since story I wrote earlier. Anything else is a fake. #Phillies #Rangers #Yankees #MLB”
December 13th, 201011:23 pm
I see that now Steve, sorry
December 13th, 201011:27 pm
No worries at all!
December 13th, 201011:30 pm
Good point Tom O’Hawke….
December 13th, 201011:31 pm
Someone asked earlier about options and which Braves are out of them going into spring training. The only player out of options that’s probably relevant for the discussion is Joe Mather. If he doesn’t make the team, he’ll have to go through waivers to be sent down….
Nice day here in New Orleans: chili-and-cheese omelot at Camelia Grill, beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde, red beans-and-rice w/fried chicken at Coop’s Place in the Quarter, terrific jazz at Preservation Hall.
Phillies going after Cliff Lee, while the Braves are hoping to get production from people like Jordan Schafer and Nate McLouth. *pukes*
BB Fan, I don’t think any potential decision on Andruw would have to do with hard feelings, it would be based on what the Braves think he could (or could not) do for them.
December 13th, 201011:35 pm
I got the lead question on Mark Bowman’s story from the mailbag on atlantabraves.com!!!
Isn’t that cool!
December 13th, 201011:36 pm
The thought of the Phillies signing Lee leaves me with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Just when I thought we were becoming competitive within the division. Ugh.
December 13th, 201011:37 pm
This Lee thing back to the phillies sounds a little bit like Furcal back to the braves, didn’t exactly work out to well……
NY Times article says that the Yankees are becoming more pessimistic tonight due to the Phillies offer…
December 13th, 201011:41 pm
C’mon guys. At least wait until it happens before you take the plunge.
December 13th, 201011:42 pm
Suddenly the Ravens seem to have forgotten how to play defense…
December 13th, 201011:46 pm
Finally turning out to be a good MNF game . . . there were 6 horrendous quarters prior to this 2nd half . . .
Did VJ bring food home, or did he prepare?
Can’t go to sleep for fear of waking up and reading Lee is a Philly.
December 13th, 201011:48 pm
. . . there were 6 horrendous quarters prior to this 2nd half . . .
Man, that sounds like one LONG game!
December 13th, 201011:51 pm
We had left over burgers from our afternoon out with his lovely daughter and adorable little granddaughter
December 13th, 201011:53 pm
By the way, Carroll, I never thanked you for the update on one of my favorite Braves and a fellow Southern Californian!
December 13th, 201011:54 pm
Thanks for the info. I just wasn’t sure if there was something specific. I guess I read into O’Brien’s comment a little too much.
December 13th, 201011:55 pm
They came north? You didn’t go to San Diego, did you? How is Jim’s hairy little granddaughter doing? (He sent me pictures.)
Brave4life- We almost had it
December 13th, 201011:56 pm
yankees have been told they’re out of cliff lee sweepstakes
December 13th, 201011:58 pm
We met them half way in Newport Beach. His granddaughter is wonderful! A very happy child
December 13th, 201011:59 pm
Gotta love the walk-off pick 6…

December 14th, 201012:02 am
Official: Lee to the Phils
December 14th, 201012:04 am
Well it appears the phillies got cliff lee. I guess that means theyre going to trade away ryan howard to restock the funds.
F’ it! We’ll find a way.
December 14th, 201012:06 am
Meanwhile, our owners sit there with their thumbs up their arses. That assumes of course that we actually have owners that are human who have thumbs and arses.
December 14th, 201012:07 am
That rotation is going to be really hard to solve
A Phillie? NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Where the heck did the Phils show up from
December 14th, 201012:08 am
Tom O’Hawke, there were two Monday night games. Vikings/Giants was terrible. Ravens/Texans was also terrible until the 2nd half . . .
December 14th, 201012:10 am
The Braves really have no gripe here, at least towards our management. We’ve splurged and got one of the biggest bats on the market. This is the Phils counter moves. Doesn’t sound like the Phils can facilitate this trade w/out moving some money or players such as Blanton and Ibanez. If they move Ibanez then they will have taken some pop out of that lineup.
December 14th, 201012:11 am
What a surprise! Phillies get better. We get Jordan Schafer. We could end up with the 2nd lowest payroll in the division next year . . .
December 14th, 201012:12 am
you never know. hamels could go back to sucking and lee could get hurt. (i’m an eternal optimist.)
P’cola Brave, splurged? Are you kidding me?
Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels – better than Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz – were sunk….
December 14th, 201012:13 am
That’s great, cabravesfan. I’m happy for them.
My very good friend, living in Tampa, just had a son a few weeks back. He was born with a head of hair that rivalled baby Julia’s mane.
It’s funny after the doctor slaps them in the butt to get them breathing, the hair dresser steps in next.
Oh, and good night.
December 14th, 201012:14 am
LEE, BLANTON, OSWALT, HALLIDAY, ????? I forget vs. HANSON, JURRJENS, LOWE, HUDSON, MINOR/BEACHY – I like our chances. They gotta’ score too you know.
December 14th, 201012:15 am
Got it! (had it, actually)
So, Cliff Lee took less money to go to the Phillies. 5 years for about $100M according to NY Post . . .
December 14th, 201012:16 am
There 5th guy is Hamels. Looks like they will move Hanson. We have a very good rotation as well. From the sounds of it they need to move Ibanez as well. Take Werth and Ibanez out of that lineup then its not as deadly. We have added a great offensive force in Uggla. We should be fine. You still have to score to win.
December 14th, 201012:17 am
I love the homerism, but that’s not even close . . .
The team that disappointed Lee by trading him just took less money and years!! How they do that?
December 14th, 201012:18 am
Cliff Lee took 50 MILLION dollars less to go to Philly
Thats a lot of bread he turned down
December 14th, 201012:20 am
WHY THE FUDGE did Yankee fans have to spit on his wife
I blame New York right now
December 14th, 201012:21 am
I blame the Braves for not even being in the ballgame . . . the Braves are bottom feeders!
Your getting a little worked up over one pitcher. They’ve already lost their RF. Seems they have to move Ibanez to help create money to pay Lee. They have no bullpen outsite of Lidge. We are pretty equal team. They have the best rotation in baseball no doubt but they still have some work to do. Take Werth and Ibanez out of that lineup and that hurts. Plus we’ve beaten Hamels, Lee and Halladay. Oswalt has never beaten the Braves in his career. Calling ballgame now is a little premature my friend.
December 14th, 201012:22 am
Guys, before you panic, look at Lee’s career numbers. Aside from one amazing season in Cleveland he isn’t the Superman that this hype has made him out to be. I’d put any of our pitchers, aside from KK, up against him and not worry about our chances. He’s good, sure, but he’s not anything to be scared of.
If what people say is true and both Teheran and Delgado are ready by mid-summer then the Braves are in great shape should someone get hurt or struggle.
Think of it this way… if the Phillies do win the division again it just means the Braves don’t have to face them in the playoffs. Some other team will take them out in the first round and clear the way.
Rob from SC
December 14th, 201012:23 am
When I get pissed about our cheap ownership, I remind myself that Turner spent big money for years. Hopefully when they sell, new ownership will raise the payroll,
December 14th, 201012:24 am
LEE, BLANTON, OSWALT, HALLIDAY, ????? I forget vs. HANSON, JURRJENS, LOWE, HUDSON, MINOR/BEACHY – I like our chances.
..Sorry. but they’re not even close to comparable. Just being realistic
And you’re forgetting Hamels
Brave4life- We almost had it
December 14th, 2010
Cliff Lee took 50 MILLION dollars less to go to Philly
The players union will not be happy.
December 14th, 201012:26 am
And why are people suddenly acting like the Phillies have no offense? Even without Werth, they’re still better than the Braves.
Fredi: Halladay is the only sure Hall of Famer in that group. Not better than Maddox, Glavine and Smoltz. Deeper in some years maybe
December 14th, 201012:27 am
Teheran will be needed in October. Take care of your business until then kid.
P’cola Brave, they don’t need a great bullpen when their top pitchers are going 7-8+ innings.
The Braves starters kind of melted down by the end of the year, while their guys were just getting started.
Are you sure they will have to move some other players, or are you just speculating (hoping)?
December 14th, 201012:28 am
What i dont like about this is ONE thing. He is a Lefty,
The Braves are HORRIBLE against lefties for some odd reason
Hello every one! I’ts funny how Phillie fans didn’t come on our blog until they got Lee, and I predict Lee will be on the 15 day disabled list through out thr whole year! Plus he’s geeting old for that kind of money. All phillie fans go suck an egg! I’m laughing, and Phillies suck!!!!
December 14th, 201012:29 am
Where did the Phillies get 20 Million dollars from???
Lee over paid, and will be end up just like KK. in a couple of years or so…….
December 14th, 201012:30 am
Its been stated they are trying to move Blanton and Ibanez to free money. Willing to eat at least half the salaries.
Stimulas package from Joe Biden…..
December 14th, 201012:32 am
Even if that is true, they’d still have more clutch hitters in their lineup than the Braves . . .
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
