Last year the braves fans had no reason to believe our pitching staff couldnt win for us… this year is no different… other teams can do all they want to make super teams and great pitching staffs or offencive teams but well rounded teams with good clubhouse chemestry can win too!
see also rangers giants rays and others… im honestly glad we’re all complaining about the pitchers philly has and not complaining about our own!

Chopshop – My top 10 is almost exactly the same…maybe I swap Beachy and Carlos Perez’s positions…but I have Edward Salcedo at #10…and JJ Hoover right outside the top 10…I’m sure you know all about Salcedo…but for those who don’t, Salcedo is a Dominican SS…and the Braves highest $ international sign ever…just turned 19 in July/Aug…came over to the States in July and played a couple of months at Rome as an 18 (or just turning 19) year old…struggled a little bit numbers wise…but was very young for the league…and was also adjusting not only to pro ball…but being in the US…had some visa problems initially in getting back to the US…just the fact that he was sent straight to Rome (and not Danville) at that age shows how impressive he is…very impressive tools…and a very impressive looking athlete…already about 6-2 195…some think he might ultimately profile at 3B or even LF down the road…esp if he grows more or puts on a lot more muscle…but some think that outside of Freddie Freeman he’s our best position player prospect…
Maybe on the others of note I add Joe Leonard, Cory Gearrin, Tyler Pastornicky, Cory Harrilchak…but that always depends on where you want to draw the line…

Thats what i’m talking about. Hopefully an extra digit for Jason can lead to some better production against the phils next year. That and just having a little experience under his belt. Ready to see how this season will play out. Interesting offseason to say the least.

Paul Snyder – I apologize for getting Greinke’s salary wrong. I included the first two years in addition to the last two of his heavily backloaded contract. You were right that he is due $13.5 M in 11 and 12. The $4 and $7 were 09 and 10.
You have to look at Greinke’s 09 season to see what he is capable of. American League, bad defense and he is 16w and 8l with a 2.17 era and a 1.07 WHIP More than a strikeout an inning in 229 innings. All for the Royals.

I don’t wish bad luck on anyone but this rotation has drawn a lot of comparisons to the braves of the 90’s and the Maddux acquisition but its important to point out that when Maddux joined the braves he and the other parts of that great rotation were on the right side of 30. 3 of the phillies big four are on the other side. Its something to consider, the injury thing, which is why I heard someone on mlb network say they wish that they could keep Blanton for insurance purposes in case one of them goes down but his salary doesn’t really make that ideal.

My blood is just very thin – and unfortunately is ain’t from alcohol.

a lot of people dreaming of Greinke in a Braves uniform I see after reading the posts above……Since I can’t beat you guys I might as well join you in the dreaming.
If the Braves could get Gardner from the Yankees for Lowe that would be huge (not happening but any dream scenario has the Braves unloading Lowe).
Dayton Moore is looking for a Tex type package and as unlikely as the Braves are to do that again, it would cost us Delgado, Kimbrel or Venters, and Beachy/Minor since we have no position prospects that would interest KC. Either that or Delgado, Prado, and Beachy/Minor. Greinke would be a very pricey addition.
Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Greinke, Beachy/Minor
versus
Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels, 5th starter

not really souring on him Paul, just saying that he did not do well and that might drop him off the chart. Bethancourt was disappointing too this year. That cover in the article was released in May of that season. Certainly gave him plenty of time to implode under the spotlight.
He has pitched well against against AL East teams in their stadiums. It could be argued that going to the mound every day for a team that is awful defensively and offensively is its own special kind of pressure. And we aren’t just talking about a good season here. We are talking about a great season. That season ranks as the 33rd best pitching performance ever by any pitcher in baseball history.

Greg Maddux pitched 11 seasons for the Braves. Arguably the peak years of his career.
In 2009 Greinke had a 2.17 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP

That cover in the article was released in May of that season. Certainly gave him plenty of time to implode under the spotlight.
Making one cover isn’t the equivalent of the type of pressure this guy can face if he goes to a contender, especially in New York. Some cities and some situations just do not work for certain players. I don’t know if Greinke falls into that category but given his past and that his anxiety will never go away, I think any team looking to acquire him as a means to help get their team to the next level has to consider those things. One Cy Young season on a bad team doesn’t exactly mirror the pressure of a pennant chase. Rightfully or wrongly, its something that has to be considered when thinking about acquiring Greinke. It may turn out to be a none issue but nobody knows for sure whether it will.
