Sherrill passes physical; Braves’ bullpen restocked
George Sherrill passed a physical and became the newest member of the Braves’ bullpen Friday, two days after the veteran left-hander agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.2 million contract.
The former Baltimore closer had a career-worst season in 2010 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, posting a 6.69 ERA in 65 appearances. Sherrill, 33, still held left-handed hitters to a .192 average, but right-handers teed off at an alarming .427 clip.
The Braves believe his woes stemmed from mechanical flaws that cropped up early last season. He smoothed his delivery some and showed some progress in the final two months, and the Braves think that working with pitching coach Roger McDowell will help further.
Sherrill gives the Braves a third lefty in the bullpen, with setup man/closer candidate Jonny Venters and Eric O’Flaherty. Sherrill seems more suited to situational-lefty duties at this stage of his career, rather than pitching complete innings like Venters routinely does.
The Braves traded for veteran right-hander Scott Linebrink from the Chicago White Sox last week, and their bullpen seems set for 2011. After posting the third-lowest bullpen ERA in the National League in 2010, the Braves lost veteran closer Billy Wagner to retirement and setup man Takashi Saito to free agency.
Their 2011 bullpen could have three lefties and four right-handers: Peter Moylan, closer candidate Craig Kimbrel, Linebrink, and either Scott Proctor, rookie Stephen Marek or versatile Cristhian Martinez.

We’d definitely be on the plus side at that point… And you have to know Chipper is going to be out at least a fair portion of the season, moving Prado to third…
If Chipper’s healthy, we’ve got Prad in left, Damon in center and the second coming in right… And, a great clubhouse guy in Damon to continue the trend of “mentors”… And, McClouth becomes less of a concern and is icing if he turns it back on….

I’m pretty sure we’re not getting another big bat in the OF guys. We got Hinkse back, who I assume will play LF when Prado has to move to 3B to cover for Chipper. Now if we can get some cash back for KK, that could be another story.
We’re going to have to hope McClouth or Jordan Schafer remember how to play baseball.

Damon belongs nowhere in the field.
I also doubt that Wren will relinquish his hold on our prospects and trade for a CF. Instead he will wait to see how McLouth does. If McLouth is stinking it up then he will give Schafer or Matt Young a shot. One thing I’ve learned is that Frank Wren does not trade top prospects unless they are obviously blocked like Flowers was.

I like it that Sherrill seems to be lights out against lefty batters but it would be nice if he can start getting righty batters out again so that he could go at least an inning at a time. Peter Moylan typically gets so many innings during the year that by August and September it seems that he becomes a bit less effective than he usually is the first four months of the season.
The Braves skipper really needs to be able to spread the work a bit more evenly to keep from wearing certain pitchers out by the end of the season. Mainly for the later inning guys, of course, than the long relief guys. The potential does seem to be there for another good year from the bullpen.

I really like the moves thus far this off-season, but the fact remains that we are going to be 2 outfielders short in 2011.
I’m a huge Chipper fan, but have a feeling that he will probrably injure himself in spring training- most likely getting out of his car!
Chipper- For the good of the team, please go ahead and retire.
Prado will have to take over for you at third next season and we will again only have the Hey-Train to work the outfield.

I understand why you and others are down on McLouth, but he does not have “average” speed. He has very good speed and is a very good base stealer as is evidenced by the fact that he has successfully stolen 83 bases in 96 attempts during his career. It wasn’t his fault that Cox wouldn’t let him try to steal more often last year.

I think that most people on here are realist and can see that we are going to be dificient in the outfield. I wouldn’t take that as our saying that the Braces won’t do well. We are just concerned about our options in the outfield.

Gonzalez is making it clear that McLouth will get every opportunity to win back the CF job. Still, with all the minor league signings, and the news that Schaefer seems to be regaining his health, Wren is indicating that if McLouth can’t hit, he won’t be on the team for long.
Fredi doesn’t have the same investment in the current roster that Bobby had, and Wren has shown he can be creative with roster moves. Take nothing for granted right now.

In my humble opinion I think what we need in CF is not necessarily a power guy as much as we need someone who can cover the gaps and possibly bat leadoff. Both of which we are lacking with Nate. To me he is more of a left fielder and a bottom of the order hitter if he could hit his career averages.
The one constant we always had during the pennant run was speed in CF. I believe that we will see a lot of Schafer and Young in spring training and that they will be given every opportunity to win the job.

Sally, I think you can see that although some may be realistic, others are downright pessimistic, and those are the ones I was addressing.
Are there question marks? sure. Name one team without question marks. Even the Yankees and Red Sox have holes. But to listen to some of these posters, the Braves are the only team without superstars at every position including bench, and their future is to finish dead last unless we trade for approximately 15 different outfielders.
Not to mention that every thirty seconds someone posts that the Braves should just “trade KK and McLouth” like that has not occurred to anyone ever before and is just a matter of picking up the phone and sayng who wants em?

DOB: No comments this time about your report on the bullpen situation. Just an observation on how the pitching has changed in an unchanged nine inning game. Used to be a pitcher was expected to finish a game unless he just did not have his stuff and got knocked around. Next came the era of a closer, then a set-up man and closer. Now we have s situational pitcher who is brough in to pitch to one or two batters a most because he is
good only vs right or left hand batters. No complaints about the game changing as it does give more pitchers a chance to play I guess.

I love some of our so called “fans.” They have no faith in the players, coach’s or executives that make the decisions. We are not the Yankee’s, Red Sox or Philly so we can not spend like they do. Let everyone do there jobs and I think we will be fine. The only other thing I think we might need is maybe a 4th outfielder and a decent backup infielder other then that play ball. I think we have a shot this year cause Philly didn’t get any better this off season they actually lost a couple of players and everyone else in the division is getting there but not there yet. Before you write off your so called team look and see what we actually have first.

Call me crazy or maybe just tipsy off the Kool-Aid that O’Brien’s been serving, but I really believe that Jordan Schaefer is gonna have a super year for us this year. The kid no doubt has all the tools, and you don’f just forget how to play baseball. We’ve all seen athletes from every sport try to play through what they thought was a minor injury, only to further complicate things and just make things worse. And we’ve all seen those same athletes be driven by the competitive fire that burns in them try to come back from those injuries too early and do nothing more than reaggravate their injury and prolong their rehabilitation. I see this kid as a tough competitor, with that cockiness that you like (or at least I like it) in a ballplayer.

Norris, it’s been explained to you several times that Schafer has been injured and/or recovering from surgery for the last two years, so where he ended up last year is moot. You won’t see Medlen pitch this spring training. That’s no reason to begin calling for his immediate release or trade.

Paddy, I know the chief (Levi Walker Jr) had a drinking problem but have not heard of any problem with children. I know he worked at a gas station in the offseason near my home and was a nice man. I have heard over the years about disagreements over money and the drinking thing. Do you have any link to anything that backs up the accusation about children? I have to take that with a grain of salt until I see something else about it from another source.

The Braves were a playoff team in 2010, and with the moves they’ve already made they will either win the NL East or be the wild card team in 2011. I agree we need a speedy CF but if McClouth can come back to where he was in Pittsburgh, we may already have one – somewhat of a BIG “if.” Nonetheless, in the post steroid era, pitching will trump hitting most times, and The Braves have one of the best staffs in the majors. So if the 2011 Braves can find a way to score about 4-5 runs per game, we will win 90+ games and make the playoffs. GO BRAVES. BTW, it’s looking like the Mets are the new cellar dweller in the East.

I worked with Chief for 4 are more years and tailgated after games with him but never hear that. I do know about 5 years ago he told me he had stop drinking. He was going around talking at schools etc about the harms for drugs. I pray he has………he had a good heart and thats the way I remember him.

Wren continues to make the right moves. I still think we have yet to see the real Scott Proctor. What a heck of a “ARMsnel” we have going for us….. P.S.- Let’s push the buttons need to grab Mr. Cain from the Brewers. I think this guy will be something if given the opparitunity.

Ramblingman… There are those here that would probably say ” we can always trade KK, McClouth, and 2 rookie leaguers and get Alex Rodriguez from the Yankees to play 3rd. They seem to think that we can get something for nothing… Also .. The Braves will only win about 20 games with our current outfield… … Ummm… Ok. y’all just need to chill… And to the guy that said we let Melky go to the Royals for nothing.. That’s what free agency is, dude. Wow. unbelievable.

Agree Mungo. The Rays are talking to Brewers about Cain. If they deal for Cain, Upton will be moved. I rather have Cain but don’t forget we got SCHAFER.

Sherill is insurance at closer if the young guys fail.
Its a shame that Billy Wagner retired and he still had dominant stuff. Unlike Brett Favre that keeps playing when he’s lost several steps.

Bobby- Isn’t Cain a Georgia Boy. I really think this kid would make a “Quick” impact to the team. I’ve kind of lost it for the likes of McLouth and Schafer. As much as I’ve lived the “Braves” world…I think it is health for Freddi to bring in some fresh hands. This is something that could not be done with Mr. Cox at the helm. Bobby Cox was the heart of our team but it is time for a tranfusion of new blood and styles.

Cain is from Valdosta Ga. about 8 or 10 miles from the JD Drew Boys. Yes I agree on the new blood and Fredi will want his own system. Many don’t agree but each to their opinion. Cain would be super. Braves would have him for 5 years at a good price. Prado, J-Hey and Cain..wow!

I loved Ted when he owned the Braves and would love for a free spending owner to step up, but Ted has gone beyond the deep end so far that he can’t even see the edge of sanity. No way I would want him owning the Braves again.

Dude I wouldn’t care if Ted was left wing, chicken wing, or broken wing…….if he would spend his money like he did in the day (p.s. he was just as crazy then) we wouldn’t have to worry about payroll restrictions. That being said, I still think there needs to be a salary cap.

Paddy, I am afraid if Ted bought the Braves again, he’d have them eating buffalo burgers, make them sign contracts restricting them to one child each, and he would turn off the lights at 10 pm every night to save energy…even if it was in the middle of the 8th inning.

For those ragging on Chipper about his injury problems the last 2 years, he led the team in games played 2 years ago with 143 a year after winning the batting title… his injury last year was a bit of a fluke on a jumping fade away throw to first base.
McLouth might be a lost cause at this point. It’s been over two years since he has been able to hit the ball. While he’s never really been able to hit all that much, he has at least been able to draw the occassional walk and keep is OBP around .350. That’s the real issue. If he could get his OBP back up and provide the occassional HR out of the 7th or 8th spot in the lineup, he would be fine. Carl Crawford was really the PERFECT fit for the Braves… a leadoff hitting LF.
Schafer is going to re-open some eyes this year. Strength in your wrists is so important for a hitter and the surgery he had typically requires 12-14 months for full recovery. You see top prospects tear up minor league hitting all the time but never be able to make the adjustment in the majors. When they get sent down, they usually go back to hitting minor league pitching. They don’t just stop being able to hit at all levels unless there is some reason, in his case, an injury.
