Brewers were looking for pitching- and they already got it today with trade with Toronto for Shaun Marcum. Trading Cain to Braves not very likely now considering that, I would think. Other than pitching, I can’t think of anything Braves would offer for Cain…

Why is everyone so quick to throw McLouth out and bring in Ellsbury? Nate had better numbers than Ellsbury last year and has almost the same numbers in 6 seasons as Ellsbury has in 4. McLouth is an all-star that had a bad year and everyone …wants to throw him out. Give the guy a shot this year and lets see if we get the McLouth of 08, if we do then we get a 20+ HR, 90+ RBI, 20+ SB CF and we have one of the best OF’s in the league. What other outfield compares to J-Hey, Prado and McLouth if he gets back to form. That’s 3 all-star OF starters. I think everyone’s biggest concern is if Prado’s going to be playing 3B more than LF when Chip is hurt, clearly by this blog and the rumors around the Braves universe it would look like Schafer and Young are going to duke it out for the fourth spot/Prado’s platoon when he’s at 3B. The talk about Cain coming over is intriguing though.

I have a little prediction for this season regarding Schafer and McLouth and our CF situation. I believe McLouth will start as our CF and do relatively decent/well and Schafer will start a little slow at AAA and then take off. We will make a somewhat surprising trade around the All-Star break (like Escobar-Gonzalez this past break) and ship McLouth somewhere and eat a couple million of his contract and get a decent minor league piece or two in return. That will open the door for Schafer, who will take the job and won’t let it go! Braves in ‘11!!!!!

How can one not root for Schafer to be completely healthy and try to win his starting job back? Now if Schafer plays lights out and our performs McLouth, does Nate still get the gig because of his price tag, or do the Braves swallow their pride and make Schafer the starter? I say do whatever helps the team more, and if that means sitting McLouth on the bench and watching Schafer start then so be it.

DOB, I think most people on here are surprised to hear he has played that much. The dude is simply an amazing ball player when he’s healthy. Just think of how good his career would have been if could have spent just half as much time on the on the DL. And to make it worse it hasn’t been just one nagging injury. Very frustrating for the fans, the Braves and Chipper. But we still love Hoss and hopefully he can finish his career healthy and swinging the bat like we all know Larry Wayne can.

Chipper even if healthy is not going to play much. Prado will play a lot of time at 3rd. Therefore, leaving us with a very much needed outfield. Mclouth doesnt have it unless our new hitting coach changes his approach. The guy swings up on everything.
we will need a left fielder and center fielder. Hinske is not a daily player. He is a utility player.
The braves will need at least one more daily outfielder to compete.

If McLouth ends up being the 4th outfielder, that shouldn’t be a big deal. It doesn’t matter that he’s making $7 million coming off the bench. What matters is that the Braves have the best 25 players out there for $90 million. Just average it out and pretend like they all make $3.5 million each and all that stuff goes away.

I think there is ZERO chance that we trade a first-round draft pick, left-handed starting pitcher who K’d 9.5 batters per nine innings in his first major league stint even though he had pitched more innings than in any year in his life for a slap-hitting CF who would be our 4th OF.

Now, while you’re diagramming that sentence, let me say that I think Cain would be a nice pickup at the right price.

But his ..763 OPS was propped up by a .370 BABIP, which is not likely sustainable. If that drops to a more likely .300 – .310, he’s probably OPS’ing around .700, with no power, and he doesn’t take a lot of walks, and he does strike out a lot. (so far… of course he’s still young).

I’m really not down on him, but he’s not worth Mike Minor.

At the higher levels (AA and AAA), Matt Young is every bit the hitter that Cain is. Cain’s relative success in 158 major league at bats is no more indicative of stardom than was Josh Anderson’s .764 OPS for us in 2008 (and Anderson went on to never OPS .600 again).
