I saw on DOB’s Blog that it was due this month—December 16th? If so, that’s two after our neighbor’s baby is due! :) (And theat daddy-to-be is also named Matthew!)

That seems like a terrible contract for Werth. But then I rarely like such long term contracts. Looks like Boston offered 4 years. I think 5 yrs – 80 – 85 would’ve been okay to offer him. But 7 – 126?!

You mean a bad contract to pay Werth? Just want to make sure I’m following you. I think he did good to get that contract. Now he will be a part of a team that could be quite good in 2-3 years.

It’s the length of the contract that screams “crazy!!” They’ll be paying a 38-year old Werth $18 million. Plus, Werth didn’t put together an above-average full season until he was 29….that’d kind of make me a little nervous to give him that much money for that span of time.

Trey

Werth 7 year deal and $126m, Tulo signed through 2020 for huge $$$.

So much for the state of the economy! I guess MLB owners aren’t worried about declining production in future years or taking too much risk with any one player.

Will be interesting to see what happens to MLB contracts, because so far owners don’t seem to be reacting to the global economy by being more conservative with their investments than in the past.

Don’t you think if you were on the hook for $126m as an owner you’d want some incentive from the player to perform. Wouldn’t you want him to hit some minimum targets before he got his money? What stops Werth from just taking hacks and not worrying if he strikes out, all the time.

Just really struggling with the logic to give someone a 7 year contract and hoping he is still in the team at the end of it. Haven’t they heard of Mike Hampton?

Ok, really, where at the Nationals getting this type of money to offer players like Werth 18 million a year? What do they really expect to do by adding Werth? Can’t believe the Nats would fork over that kind of money…for Werth. WTH were they thinking? AGon would be a nice, but expensive, fit in ATL. I would package Freeman and possibly a few other prospects for AGON, assuming we could sign him to 4 or 5 years.

Nationals are a successful franchise, financially. In a year or 2, they’ll have Bryce Harper and Werth in the OF, and Zimmerman’s a fine 3B. When Strasburg comes back, if they can shore up the rotation, that’ll be a formidable team, IMO.

Like someone pointed out, they probably had to overpay to get a big-name F/A to come there. But if I’m a fan of that team, I’m pretty stoked about the future.

VaBravesFan

Werth is a good player, but not worthy of that contract. Nationals had to make a move after losing Dunn, Living in VA and having alot of Nationals fan’s and every game being on TV, Dunn was huge for this fan base and they really wanted him back. I think the Nationals could start to make some noise in a few years,
