I saw on DOB’s Blog that it was due this month—December 16th? If so, that’s two after our neighbor’s baby is due! (And theat daddy-to-be is also named Matthew!)
December 5th, 20105:31 pm
His wife had the baby (a boy) on Wednesday or Thursday night…can’t remember exactly when…Matthew Jacob
“Theat”? Hmm…that’s weird.
December 5th, 20105:32 pm
That seems like a terrible contract for Werth. But then I rarely like such long term contracts. Looks like Boston offered 4 years. I think 5 yrs – 80 – 85 would’ve been okay to offer him. But 7 – 126?!
December 5th, 20105:33 pm
Oh wow!! Thanks for the info! CONGRATS, Leslee (sp? Sorry…) and MattE!
Matthew Jacob…I like that name! His kids all have beautiful names…
BTW—How’d you find out? Facebook?
December 5th, 20105:34 pm
Yup- that’s correct
Yup- He posts under their foundation page…he’s awesome to follow
December 5th, 20105:35 pm
You mean a bad contract to pay Werth? Just want to make sure I’m following you. I think he did good to get that contract. Now he will be a part of a team that could be quite good in 2-3 years.
The best news from that signing is that Philly doesnt get the Nats’ protected 1st round pick.
December 5th, 20105:36 pm
Very nice play for the Bucs. We need to tie this up before half. We need this game.
December 5th, 20105:37 pm
Bad for the Nats in the long run. But I guess they, like KC or Pit, need to overpay at times to get a big name signing. Werth should party like he is set for life.
December 5th, 20105:39 pm
cabravesfan Yup- that’s correct
he’s awesome to follow
I bet. He’s such a good guy. After BMac, he’s my most favoritest!
McFann, yup! I actuall did some research on them and they are apparently the most dangerous, but not venomous, as they will even attack you if unprovoked.
December 5th, 20105:41 pm
Ballgame…way to go Ryan/Falcons D
December 5th, 20105:42 pm
Now if Crawford can sign with the Angels and Lee with the Rangers the Sox and Yanks will have had a nice offseason!
December 5th, 20105:43 pm
Falcons losing to the orange popsicles
ok, scratch that… tied with the orange popsicles
December 5th, 20105:44 pm
Or Tomahawkin…either one
Boston’s offseason so far reminds me of our ‘08 offseason. Filled w/ promise but nothing come to fruition yet.
December 5th, 20105:47 pm
This is Tomahawkin
“way to go Ryan/Falcons D .. losing to the Suckaneers. But I can taste a Falcons comeback. Bank on it !”
December 5th, 20105:49 pm
jeffrey, or Nick.
Oh! They’re vicious little buggers, aren’t they? I guess some snakes are like that…
Kinda like some people.
December 5th, 20105:50 pm
Snot, that is definitely Tomahawkin!
I just finished decorating my Christmas tree and came back to the blog to see Werth is now a National for 7yrs, wow.
Nah, Nick just makes outragious comments for shock value.
“Matt Ryan is the biggest bust in the history of the draft. Cut ties, lose the rest of the games to get a better draft pick, and start from scratch.”
Snot, he really does call them the Suckaneers!
December 5th, 20105:51 pm
Okay then! Mitchell!
McFann yes they are!
December 5th, 20105:55 pm
It’s the length of the contract that screams “crazy!!” They’ll be paying a 38-year old Werth $18 million. Plus, Werth didn’t put together an above-average full season until he was 29….that’d kind of make me a little nervous to give him that much money for that span of time.
December 5th, 20105:56 pm
I think the Falcons need to start wearing their old black jerseys and helmets again. The ones that Jamal Anderson and Chris Chandler used to wear. They looked much better than these candy cane looking ones.
December 5th, 20105:57 pm
It will be interesting to see how Werth does outside the cracker jack box in Philly. Plus not having all the boppers in the lineup with him. I’m expecting a dropoff in stats.
December 5th, 20105:58 pm
Werth not worth anything close to what he got, overpaid & off Phils roster to the Nots, good move for Braves fans, Werth made a good move, from 1st to worst, typical Boras plan, take the money & losing is all good!
I like the Falcons’ red jerseys….the throwbacks are cool too, though
December 5th, 20105:59 pm
Lets go Bucs
December 5th, 20106:00 pm
Thats a big surprise to see the Nationals sign Werth to 7 years.
Shakin my head….shakin my head
December 5th, 20106:02 pm
jeffrey, I am not too fond of them, nor am I fond of their new, smaller Falcon. I like the old Falcon.
I liked the old red jerseys they wore back in the 70s, though.
Nationals had to pay alot and give out a longer contract to get a top free agent to sign. I say they get better defensivly in the OF but he sure doesnt fill Adam Dunn’s bat.
December 5th, 20106:04 pm
D looks like swiss cheese today. Holes!
gd from nz
December 5th, 20106:07 pm
Werth 7 year deal and $126m, Tulo signed through 2020 for huge $$$.
So much for the state of the economy! I guess MLB owners aren’t worried about declining production in future years or taking too much risk with any one player.
Will be interesting to see what happens to MLB contracts, because so far owners don’t seem to be reacting to the global economy by being more conservative with their investments than in the past.
Yeah the Falcons aren’t looking so hot today. Hopefully they can do what they do best and win.
December 5th, 20106:09 pm
Is anyone watching this golf tournament? Tiger and McDowell tied going to the first playoff hole
December 5th, 20106:10 pm
The black jerseys scream “Jerry Glanville” to me. Best be done with em’.
Yeah, Ryan has been off target/timing all day. Team just looks flat. Kind of game that any win would be a great win.
December 5th, 20106:11 pm
What in the world has happened to Peyton Manning??? Plus that Werth signing is horrible….7 years??? Washington will regret that decision.
VJ’s in the other room watching…
December 5th, 20106:14 pm
Is anyone watching this golf tournament? Tiger and McDowell tied going to the first playoff hole
Yeah, DJ, I’m surfing back and forth. Tiger’s 7 on 13 made me feel good. Not because I dislike Tiger, but because I make a lot of 7s.
Pretty good drama on 18, huh?
Don’t you think if you were on the hook for $126m as an owner you’d want some incentive from the player to perform. Wouldn’t you want him to hit some minimum targets before he got his money? What stops Werth from just taking hacks and not worrying if he strikes out, all the time.
Just really struggling with the logic to give someone a 7 year contract and hoping he is still in the team at the end of it. Haven’t they heard of Mike Hampton?
Werth signing with the Nats? That should get Carl Crawford a few more million per season…
December 5th, 20106:15 pm
Werth getting seven means Crawford will at least get 7, possibly 8.
December 5th, 20106:17 pm
I don’t know I kind of miss the black jerseys, Mike. There was just something about the black jerseys. The jerseys now, just look weird. The different color “stripes” on the sleeves.
What a pick by the little guy. Woooh.
December 5th, 20106:18 pm
Mike, it’s just me though. I guess it is more of nostalgia.
December 5th, 20106:19 pm
Well, it may be coming back though. Ball looks like it moved.
Look at that, Favre gets hurt again. He knocked his shoulder out of place, but they are going to possibly try to keep him making his 298th start.
December 5th, 20106:23 pm
Falcons giving this game away with stupid penalties.
I’d like to ho slap these Bucs. Can’t stand them – just like old times.
December 5th, 20106:28 pm
What team did you end up picking today? (and don’t ask me, what game?)
Alright – finally! Please dont do something dumb on the punt. Please.
December 5th, 20106:29 pm
I didn’t pick the 49ers…first time all year
December 5th, 20106:30 pm
So you picked correctly. Why the sad face?
December 5th, 20106:32 pm
Nice blocked punt by Indie and they went in for a TD! The Cowboys are like the Yankees for me… dislike them and the thought of each being “America’s Team” for each of their sports is an insult to American sport lovers haha.
Because I hate picking against my team…even when I know they are going to lose…
December 5th, 20106:34 pm
Well, it could have been a lot worse. You could have picked against them and then they won. You picked with your head, not your heart. Have a damn beer!
Ok, really, where at the Nationals getting this type of money to offer players like Werth 18 million a year? What do they really expect to do by adding Werth? They had a guy in Adam Dunn that hit tons more homers than Werth and they were still last in the division. What a dumb move by the Nationals.
Even dumber by Jayson, guess its all about the money.
December 5th, 20106:38 pm
A guy sitting out there that still intrigues me is Scott Podsednik. Don’t know if he really fits but should come cheap. Suprised there hasn’t been much interest in him.
December 5th, 20106:39 pm
I’d rather have lost the points because they won…and I am having a beer (well, I am going to as soon as I get up and get one )
December 5th, 20106:40 pm
The Nationals seem to be thinking long term. They have a lot of up and coming prospects and now have a big RH bat for the middle of the order. They could become real competitive in the next few years.
Can’t believe the Nats would fork over that kind of money…for Werth. WTH were they thinking? AGon would be a nice, but expensive, fit in ATL. I would package Freeman and possibly a few other prospects for AGON, assuming we could sign him to 4 or 5 years.
I say good for the Nationals tho, its good to see a smaller market team outbid all the big boys. They’ll be happy with Werth for prolly 3 or 4 years.
The Nittany Lions get to taste some gator meat in the New Year’s day bowl game.
With 5 losses. Ha! Who would’ve guessed!
Andrew in PA
December 5th, 20106:41 pm
P’cola, I wouldnt mind Scotty Pod’s.
December 5th, 20106:43 pm
So Werth hits 18 of his 27 homers in Phillies small park where the balls just fly out on a pop up and he gets 18 million a year? How many does he actually think he will hit in that spacious park at Washington?
I was joking last night about Swooping in and Outbidding the RedSox for Adrian Gonzalez. Then we can decide who to lock up between Uggla and Gonzo LOL….
December 5th, 20106:46 pm
that’s what BBQ, other sports, music, movies etc are for Lolly
18 mil for 7 years. I never use this, but some situations justify – LMAO
Nationals are a successful franchise, financially. In a year or 2, they’ll have Bryce Harper and Werth in the OF, and Zimmerman’s a fine 3B. When Strasburg comes back, if they can shore up the rotation, that’ll be a formidable team, IMO.
Like someone pointed out, they probably had to overpay to get a big-name F/A to come there. But if I’m a fan of that team, I’m pretty stoked about the future.
December 5th, 20106:47 pm
Werth is a good player, but not worthy of that contract. Nationals had to make a move after losing Dunn, Living in VA and having alot of Nationals fan’s and every game being on TV, Dunn was huge for this fan base and they really wanted him back. I think the Nationals could start to make some noise in a few years,
December 5th, 20106:50 pm
A lot of people forget that they have more than Strasburg. They get the other Zimmerman back this year and he showed a lot of promise before his injury.
December 5th, 20106:51 pm
very true, alot of fans are excited around here. Also if I remember they offered Mark Texiera the same deal the Yankees offered. They want to win. I’m excited for the Nationals that is until they start to actually win lol.
December 5th, 20106:55 pm
Oakland A’s must not be to attractive, Adrian Beltre has ignored there offer, they just finally pulled it off the table. Berkman turned down a 2 year deal from them to sign a 1 year deal with the Cardinals…. ouch. But to be honest out of all the Teams in baseball I know the least about the A’s.
The A’s will end up signing Matsui.
December 5th, 20106:56 pm
been saying all along that Werth and Crawford would get 7 years 110+ at least. only surprise is who ponied up with it
December 5th, 20106:58 pm
Also if I remember they offered Mark Texiera the same deal the Yankees offered.
Actually, it was even a little better, VaBravesFan.
December 5th, 20107:00 pm
Would Reed Johnson be a good fit for this team.
December 5th, 20107:09 pm
December 5th, 20107:10 pm
Could do better then Reed Johnson.
December 5th, 20107:12 pm
Ummm, when did it rain here? I don’t like that!
December 5th, 20107:13 pm
I now see why Wren went after Linebrink. Crain, Rauch, Gregg, Balfour, etc. are all going to get multi year deals just like Benoit did. Not worth it for relievers. I like the approach of trades and/or one year deals for undervalued guys.
December 5th, 20107:14 pm
I think the Braves are set. They should just let other teams know they would be interested in a Athletic 4th OFer that can play CF and a utility player. If we dont add no one I’m happy with this.
Ross, Hinske, Mather or Conrad, Hernandez, Young or Schafer. Thats a good group to decide for bench players. I’d say the only for sure bench spots locked up are Ross and Hinske.
Brave4life- We almost had it
December 5th, 20107:15 pm
Nationals have to be the most idiotic franchise to sign Werth ffor 7/126 million
With that money the Nationals could have signed
Jorge de La rosa
+ decent bull pen arm
December 5th, 20107:16 pm
What was Diaz for???
December 5th, 20107:17 pm
It is kind of funny that the Nats of all people set the market and going nuts.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
