Bravepack – They just shed $2.5 million non tendering Diaz for part of it and another $3 mil left with Dunn and Infante. They’ve obviously got the $$$$ to pay Uggla this year or they wouldn’t have picked him up.
They shed almost 40% of their salary in 2013, so next year would be the sticking point with an Uggla extension. Nate leaves next year and there’s $6 mil right there.
If Minor and /or Beachy show they’re ready, I see Jurrjens as being traded. Then we could afford Uggla next year – afterwards is not an issue.
BravePack: Either way, through extension or arbitration, Uggla is likely to make $10 million to $11 million this season. Unless Braves backload a contract, but those seem to be falling out of favor both with players and teams.
“Battle of former Falcon quarterbacks tonight, I think philly will win in at home but if Houston gets the upset, I won’t mind.”
Philly will win 30-21 tonight, “Bank On It!” Houston is a warm weather team playing in cold weather at The Linc in front of a hostile crowd who will lose it if Philly comes out flat again after last week…
Last week philly fans blamed that loss on the terrible field in Chicago….
Making it up? Dude, try taking a listen to Jaws some time. They could ask Jaws about the price of milk in China, and he’d find a way to work into that conversation a critique of Vick’s ability as a pocket passer. He’s been doing it for a decade.

Matty D was always funny, remember how Chipper hit a homerun and got the silent treatment, Matty D couldn’t hold his grin. Also tackled the fan in Philly, cracked me up in the interview, “any baseball related questions”.
But seriously Braves didn’t have a choice. They had to make a decision, Hinske or Diaz they chose Hinske. Hinske is better and cheaper.
Now that the Braves have dumped Diaz, who are they going to replace him with? If the answer is Mather, that is not a good sign.
The Braves need to find a RH hitting OF capable of playing CF (upgrade over Diaz) and able to provide some punch for a lineup that is not as strong against LH piching. As is it stands rght now, the Braves won’t be able to platoon either McLouth or Freeman with anyone other than Mather. And if Chipper can’t come back sufficiently from his injury, his likely replacement in the lineup is Hinske, another lefty.
Barring someone getting non-tendered or a low level trade, about the only viable options are Andruw, Bill Hall and Melvin Mora, who lacks the pop of the first two options. Given the bottom line thinking of Braves’ ownership, Hall may cost more than the team is willing to spend for a back-up.
If the Braves can scrape up enough cash to sign Hall, he will provide all sorts of flexibility, and would allow Wren to forego having to carry a light hitting infielder aa a backup at SS. Not betting on it, tho. .
Just saw Todd Coffey was non-tendered……I like him, has good stuff, had a pretty good year in 2009 and he is cheap. Beats the hell out of Scott Proctor.

Yeah, I’ve got a cousin who’s a stay at home mom who thanks her “sweet mommy” almost every single day for watching her damn kid. And then she gets angry when her husband tells her she needs to get a job. I agree that the Braves didn’t have a choice about Matt, not with the the way the OF sets up now and the fact that they have to pay Nate next season, no matter what. I don’t even think it was a choice between Ski (if our lovable Aussie spells it with an i, I’m spelling it with an i!) and Matt. Ski doesn’t just play corner OF – he’s more versatile. Melvin Mora would be awesome. Talk about another Infante. He hasn’t played SS in awhile but maybe you can still fill that spot with someone else. If chipper goes down then you have a platoon of Hinske/Mora in LF. Mora would be the perfict fit for this team.

Quite happy that Eric Hinske will don a Braves uni for one, possibly two seasons. The clutch bat and the intangibles are more than worth the $1.45 mil.
Quite despondent that Kenshin Kawakami will be a Brave again next year. No one is dumb enough to take him – even at 1/3 the price. He may end up being the highest paid, season-long pitcher in AAA next year.
Quite worried that Nate McLouth might join him as the most expensive, season-long CF in AAA next season.

Well that last point is a worst-case scenario, although certainly possible. All we can do is hope it doesn’t turn out that way. No point in worrying about it at this point. At least wait until Spring Training (which as it turned out should have been the time to start worrying this year).
I see Jose from “The Tony Bruno Radio Show” has influenced many on this blog with “Wha-dohp” (i.e., what’s up). Gotta admit, the guy is funny, and “Wha-dohp Wednesday” on the show is pretty funny stuff.
I wrapped up “The Girl Who Played With Fire” earlier today, then went by the bookstore to pick up, ” The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.” I’m only a few pages in but I’m concerned.
MiaBchBravesFan: one way or another, Kawakami won’t be a Brave next season. Even though he’s told Braves he doesn’t want to go back to Japan — five Japanese teams had expressed interest, but he has to approve a sale to Japan — the Braves will keep trying to trade him to a major league team.
I’d bet that sometime after winter meetings, and perhaps not before January, another major league team will agree to pick up at least $1 million of his salary (check around, he’s better than some veterans who sign $1 mill contracts) and the Braves will eventually accept a deal and eat more of the salary than they had hoped to. Because even if they only get a team to cover $1 million or $1.5 million, something like that, it’s still better than the alternative, because he simply isn’t going to fit here in the bullpen, and sending him to the minor leagues to start does no one any good.
At least if the Braves get $1 million or more, they can use that to fill another need. That’s what is going to eventually happen, I really believe.
As for KK – I was really surprised to read that he apparently refused to agree to go to a team from his prior league. Maybe if he pitches well in the minors some MLB team will be interested in trading for him at the deadline (you never know!)
Do you see Melvin Mora as someone the Braves could pursue? Seems to play every position (similar to Infante). Only cost 1 mil last year. Seems like a perfect fit at some point.
Adam Dunn is a W. Sox. WOW. What does that say about the Nats? I mean, Strasburgh (sp) just debuted this season, and their team in on the rise….and they let the top slugger go.
Not that I’m a fan of the Nats, just saying….that for them, that will come back and bite them in the $#@ in the end…especially with the fan base.
joker – i’m thrilled TP is not the hitting coach anymore. We need some new blood. He has been doing it for ever and I was never impressed with his results.
I’m not going to argue that KK’s pitched great, but has he really pitched poorly enough to force the Braves to shove him in the basement and eat millions just to get rid of him?
I know he’s not overly popular on here, but a few things to consider:
-He allowed 3 or fewer runs in 10 of his 16 starts last season
-He had an ERA under 4 in 2009
-His ERA since becoming a Brave (4.32) is lower than Lowe’s (4.33)
Again, not saying that KK is amazing, but I do think he’s better than some make him out to be

Not betting on it, tho. .

Quite worried that Nate McLouth might join him as the most expensive, season-long CF in AAA next season.”

A NON-Brave topic…
Adam Dunn is a W. Sox. WOW. What does that say about the Nats? I mean, Strasburgh (sp) just debuted this season, and their team in on the rise….and they let the top slugger go.
Not that I’m a fan of the Nats, just saying….that for them, that will come back and bite them in the $#@ in the end…especially with the fan base.
