Tom – you certainly do need to worry! Falcons are no pushover this year. National media gives them no love, but they’re on a roll of their own, and play well at home.
I think Uggla batting cleanup for 150+ games makes the most sense. I know Heyward batting 6th gives him more RBI opportunites but he should bat 2nd or 3rd. We need the kid getting as many AB’s as he can. To be honest Fredi should just put Heyward in the 3-hole and give Chipper his choice of 2nd or 6th. Chipper behind McCann sounds good to me also.
Redskins just drived 83 yards on the Vikings to open the game. 4 for 4 on 3rd downs. Best drive we have had the whole season. McNabb looked GREAT. We also mixed in the Wild Cat with WR Brandon Banks who is 5′5 160 lbs.
Javy Vazquez close to signing with Marlins, the only teamNL team that’s closer than Atlanta to his home and family in Puerto Rico. That has been at top of his priority list for a while now.
Just the thought about the braves having Medlen + Hanson + JJ + Minor + Beachy + Medlen is just amazing………….thats 6 top of the line young guns……….all those guys can be 1-3 pitchers on most teams when they get to their 25th birthday.
So in a few years, I think we are going to se Hudson start lowering the ladder and be behind all this kids.
Braves can get lot of value while trading a pair of those guys, since we might not need all of them. Id start with JJ if Medlen comes back strong.
Its the 1st quarter, panic much? I will say that the Packers have been greatly aided so far by the penalties the falcons are committing. Its stopped the falcons drive for a field goal and has extended the packers drive but its only the first, 3 more quarters for them to get their crap together.
“Next level” teams don’t commit stupid penalties. Hope they get it together soon
All teams commit stupid penalties at some point during the year because there’s at least one stupid person on each team. Some just hide it better and keep theirs to a minimum.
The penalties are bad but I think any true falcons fan knew our defense was suspect. All the national media brag on our offense and their long drives and how that wears down the other teams defense but in reality its big for the falcons because it keeps our defense off the field a lot as well and keeps quarterbacks like Brees on the bench.
I found this interesting, from the Bill Chuck Files: “Over the last three seasons, Carl Crawford and Shane Victorino have each hit 42 homers, 31 triples, and grounded into 19 double plays.’’
After reading that, I was curious how the rest of their stats compared, given that we know Crawford is going to break the bank this winter with a huge long-term contract that could exceed $100 million in total value.
I was a bit surprised how comparable the stats were, even considering Philly plays in a hitter-friendly ballpark (the Rays play in a bunch of them, too).
Over the past three seasons, Victorino has hit .281 with 168 extra-base hits (42 homers), 189 RBI, 158 walks, 288 runs, 98 stolen bases (25 CS), a .346 OBP and .441 slugging percentage (.787 OPS) in 449 games.
Over the past three seasons, Crawford has hit .297 with 133 extra-base hits (42 homers), 215 RBI, 127 walks, 275 runs, 132 stolen bases (33 CS), a .349 OBP and .454 slugging percentage (.803 OPS) in 419 games.
Victorino has three Gold Gloves and five errors in that span, while Crawford has one Gold Glove and 10 errors (not that errors are great indicators of defensive prowess, but we might as well provide them, for what it’s worth).
Victorino, with five-plus years of service time, has two seasons left on a three-year, $22 million contract extension before he’s eligible for free agency.
This first half I gotta give the d some credit though, we usually don’t hold teams to just field goals in the redzone and that turnover was huge. After all the bad penalties looks like we’ll be heading to the half up 7. Given the way we started thats good.
We dumped Javier Vazquez’s salary to pick up a bat, but never actually use that salary relief for a slugger
Never got the slugger that year but we were able to resign Hudson and now used a piece in that Vazquez trade to help get that big slugger this year. All in all I think that trade worked out pretty good for the braves, except for that whole you have to take Melky for a year but we survived that and go into next season down the Melk Man and up an Uggla. No major prospects moved either.
Seriously, how many problems can Brett Favre come up with to keep himself in the headlines?? First it was the ankle, then the shoulder, now he claims he might have pneumonia (which the Vikings say is just a sinus infection…Dear Brett- big difference between pneumonia and sinus problems!)…is swine flu next on his list??
Very interesting……….We all know Victorino is a very very good player. He just gets lost between so many starts. I wonder if he can put all those numbers while playing, say, for the Padres or for……Kansas City.
Might not be as good as he is right now, but he is still worth several millions a year, no argument there.
I wouldnt like him in Atlanta…….let the Phillies have him, I just love to hate him.
So, I had no idea Samuel L. Jackson went to college in Atlanta. It took me by surprise to see him in those Falcons commercials and it really took me by surprise to see him at the UGA game last night.
No, but Brett is from Miss. The way things are going for him this year all he needs now is to be linked to the Cam Newton/Miss St drama. Somewhere in that story could be a Brett Favre link, you never know.
So where does our potential opening day offense stands right now? What could we expect out of this group? Im gonna put down some numbers, realistic numbers based on career numbers (what a player is capable of considering age/experience, last season performance and AAA numbers, sometimes just typing relevant stats for each player:
