That is funny to come on read the blog and see I was not the only one eating large amounts of green beans. My family thought it strange since everyone was pigging on ham, stuffing and cake that I would eat all these green beans.
actually i love vegetables but green beans are not one of my real favorites, especially canned ones…yuck
in gact other than corn and okra I ain’t thrilled about any canned veggies.. I LOVE fresh asparagus, but canned ones are nothing like the real stuff…another yuck
I agree that fresh veggies are better. I’m lucky in that regard because our school hosts a farmers market every so often so we can get fresh stuff and one of my roommates works for the greenhouse so she saves us some.
If you ask me, the Yankees shouldn’t have to budge off their reported three-year, $45 million offer to their iconic team captain for a lot of reasons. The problem is, in taking the justifiably hard line they have, telling Jeter to go shop their offer to see if anyone else is inclined to even come close to matching it, much less topping it, they’ve now painted him into a corner from which it will be hard to get out of and still save public face.
Better they should have just told the world how greedy and unreasonable Jeter and his agent, Casey Close, are being in this negotiation. To do that, however, apparently would have been to betray an agreement the two sides made going in – which was not to negotiate in the media or reveal each other’s positions.
The reason the Yankees’ offer is out there is because whenever a club makes an offer to a free agent it becomes common knowledge in the central offices of baseball and throughout the industry. On the other hand, the players’ and agents’ asking prices never get revealed unless they themselves let them be known.
If this is true, and an offer made by a team becomes common knowledge in the central offices of baseball and throughout the industry, why do they then so often get victimized by the claims of a “mystery team” making a better offer by the likes of Boras?
What is the blogs thoughts of adding former farmhand, Zach Miner, to the bullpen? He may be a non tender candidate. I know he’s been injured the past few seasons but he does have a power arm, and is a veteran presence in the pen.
Howdy there and happy black Friday. Trust everyone had a great holiday, and plan to stretch it into a nice long weekend….I’m sitting here at the airport in Charlotte about to board a plane for Philly. Am driving from there out to Atlantic City to cover the Yellow Jackets in a couple of games in the Legends Classic the next two days. Never been to Atlantic City. Heard it was cheesy, but hey, you gotta see it for yourself, right?

Howdy there and happy black Friday. Trust everyone had a great holiday, and plan to stretch it into a nice long weekend….I’m sitting here at the airport in Charlotte about to board a plane for Philly. Am driving from there out to Atlantic City to cover the Yellow Jackets in a couple of games in the Legends Classic the next two days. Never been to Atlantic City. Heard it was cheesy, but hey, you gotta see it for yourself, right?
You’ll enjoy yourself I think. Have several first cousins there, and vist them frequently. Always attend the A-10 b-ball tournement in March. Don’t gamble, but having family put you up takes the slickness off the place. Anyway, enjoy.
You’ll like Atlantic City if you keep an open mind. Visit Michael’s on the Boardwalk, and think of Cheers. If a country boy from Virginia can embrace it, you can city girl.
the players association makes sure that the players know what’s being offered and encourage the players to take the highest offer….but if the owners were to publicize their offers or agree that they aren’t going to pay the big contracts, they are accused of collusion…..the players are still being paid on a wage scale artificially created by steroids….just look at the jeter/arod situation as proof
Not so sure what roids have to do with anything in this instance. Player’s salaries would have appreciated pretty drastically even if there was no PED problem for all those years.
Once a level has been reached, it’s virtually imposible to put that Genie back in the bottle and even without the drugs, salaries will continue to go higher. Just wait until the Pujols contract extension or Free Agency gets here and watch what happens to the salary structure then. You ain’t seen nothin yet. (gratuitous reference to Bachman Turner Overdrive for all y’all LOF’s).
I know a lot of people think the Yanks should pony up to keep Jeter, but it makes no business sense whatsoever. Heck, 3 yrs at $15 mill a season is a ton of money for a 36 year old SS with decreasing range – regardless of what he does off the field and the tone he sets in the clubhouse.
I wager Jeter would be fortunate to get 2 years at $12 mill per season on the open market, perhaps with a club option 3rd year.
I know ego (on both sides) has a lot to do with this situation getting dragged out, but ultimately, Jeter should remember he is a commodity like all other ‘ball players. Whether its an appropriate way to look at a person’s worth or not, Jeter has a ‘dollar value’ and the Yankees’ offer is almost certainly higher than market price.
Sorry Jeter, you need to get over yourself. I can’t believe I’m aligning myself with the Yankees front office, but they made a sterling offer to him, IMO.
Jeter needs to realize that Chipper at age 36, signed for $14 mil per year for three years and he had just won a Batting Championship – not had the worst year of his career like Jeter.
They should sign him, but it’s a fair deal for a team icon.
I’m a tad worried about our defense for next year. Prado seems athletic enough to handle LF, so I don’t worry about that position. Uggla will be his not so great self at 2nd, Chipper isn’t nearly as rangy as he once was at 3rd and is prone to the wild, lazy throws, Gonzalez didn’t amaze me at SS (hopefully he’ll sure himself up there in 2011), Nate in CF can be painful to watch, especially when he “throws”, Heyward is a tad above average in RF (not spectacular), Freeman is supposdly a great defensive 1st baseman and Mac is a tad below average defensive C.
Guys, that’s two positions that are above average (Heyward/Freeman) and FF hasn’t yet proved himself at 1st in the bigs for a long stretch. This is why I’m a little surprised Wren seems fine with the idea of Nate in CF again to start the season. That’s one position I would’ve liked to see him get an all glove man and have Nate PH or platoon. It’s sad his salary doesn’t allow them to think that way. Damn business of baseball.
Maybe the all glove man for CF will end up being Joe Mather. I’ve read nothing but positive things on his defense in CF/OF. Hey, if he can hit just a little and play better D than Nate then he’d be my guy. Nate is maddening to watch because he seems stubborn and unteachable. Reminds me of Frenchy and the Andruw at the end of his Braves era.
TnBRian – There’s quite a bit of difference between Wren being fine with Nate in CF and not having much choice about the decision.
He’ll find someone else who’s got some CF skills and they’ll likely be some platooning. Then again, maybe Nate decides to be the player they originally felt he was and improves over last year.
One way or another, salary or no, I get the feeling Nate is on a very short leash.
However, when I hear complaints about the defense (and there ISsome validity to the arguement), I wonder if pople realize that Freeman at First base is a definite improvement over Glaus and that Prado in LF (he’s played quite a bit there in winterball) are two major improvements over last year before we even start to play.
Also, when you figure Prado, Infante and Brooks at second last year, Uggla has only four more errors than they did combined, so it seems a wash, to me. Add Uggla’s offense and we come out plus.
No worse than last year defensively and maybe (when the last parts are added) even a tad better. The offense will be much improved with Freeman just being cosistent and Uggla adding protection to Chipper, Prado and (maybe) Mac in the lineup.
Lew: I agree with the gist of your 12:44 p.m. comment. Freeman’s a major upgrade defensively at 1B. And while I don’t know that Prado will be an outstanding defensive outfielder, I’m confident he will be significantly better than the mediocre-and-worse defensive players the Braves have run out there in the past couple of years. Coupled with the obviously improved offense he provides at the position, and it’s a big overall upgrade in LF.
I also think you’re right that the second-base defensive dropoff isn’t going to be as precipitous as some here fear. Fact is, Braves didn’t get great 2B defense last season. And from all the games I’ve seen the Marlins play against the Braves, Uggla’s D isn’t nearly as lousy as some claim. I was also at the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, and his D was a debacle that night. But I’ll judge him not by that one night in the late innings of an All-Star Game, but by the regular-season games I’ve seen him play against the Braves.
While he’s certainly not a stellar defensive player, he does turn the double-play well. And making 4-5 more errors than the average 2B isn’t going to cost the Braves nearly as many games as he’s going to help them win by hitting two or three times as many homers and driving so many more runs than a typical 2B, and having an OPS so much higher than most at his positions, and giving opposing pitchers another big hitter to worry about when facing the Braves lineup.
TnBrian: When I asked Wren directly, during the GM meetings, about Mather as a CF option, he made it clear that’s not what the Braves are planning on. What I get from Braves is that while Mather can play CF on a limited basis, if needed there, it’s not something they’d want to do on any sort of regular basis. He’s a corner guy — corner infielder and corner outfielder.
Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reports that Derek Jeter and the Yankees are “at least $80 million apart” in negotiations.
Yikes. Madden says that Jeter’s initial contract request called for six years and $150 million. The Yanks, meanwhile, are sticking to their guns on a generous three-year, $45 million proposal. Jeter, 36, batted just .270/.340/.370 this past season and played poor defense at the shortstop position. The Yankees have no reason, really, to sweeten their offer.
Connie will be on the team next year “Bank on It” after what he did as a pinch hitter last year you can’t refute that…
With those options you just listed I think the braves will drop a pitcher to make room, but that will all be based on what everyone does in S. Training…So its too early to tell…
My Narrow ass is starting to think that Hinske will go to Milwaukee since he is from Wisconsin and that the Fact that L. Media and Wren are lowballing him with the cheap contract BS
Anyone see any Black Friday Deals on CFs or Relief pitchers? Ok I kid, but seriously is there any names circulating for filling either of those two spots?
The braves are done addressing the OF…We will sign a reliever around or after X-Mas (Hopefully Kevin Gregg) after that we are set with Nate-Dawg in CF for April
Report: Derek Jeter wanted six years, $150 million at first (!)
By ‘Duk
If Bill Madden’s report on Derek Jeter’s(notes) initial salary demand is right, I like to think that ol’ No. 2 was wearing this look on his face when it was delivered.
A request for a six-year deal that would be worth a total of $150 million and end when he’s 42 years old?
Well, we’ve all started a negotiation with a comical request that we knew we had no shot at getting met.
(Indeed, my father likes to say that if you don’t get asked to leave at least one dealership when shopping for a new car, you’re doing it wrong.)
That reminds be of being tossed from a Ford dealership in 1992. I wanted to buy a new pick up that year and had been using the internet for awhile by then so I did a little research. I found a site that had all the inside information about auto dealers, factory invoice, dealer markups, shipping cost, factory holdbacks and how it all worked. Well I put together a file for the truck I wanted and headed out to a dealership.
The dealership I went to claimed to have the best deals, so I talked to a salesman and laid out what I wanted. We were in the showroom and he left and came back with the sales manager. He offered a deal higher than I wanted to pay so I started to make my case. I told him I was offering him a small profit over cost and when he factored in the factory holdback it was more than fair. When I mentioned ” factory holdback” he went apoplectic. Things got a little loud and he was telling me I did not know what the hell I was talking about. Well in short order he was screaming at me to get the hell out of his dealership, calling me a smart assed punk, people were watching as he was trying to push me out. I was laughing as I left and said make them tell you about the dealer holdback and left.
So when I left I thought, that hit a nerve, and headed to another dealership. I talked to a salesman there and told him what I wanted to do. He got the sales manager and I went into his office and laid out my deal for him and he said, yeah I’ll sell you the truck for that. So after we had done the paper work, he said do me a favor and tell me where you got all this information. I knew the guy from high school so I told him where I got it, that it was all available on line, even showed him a site. He just shook his head and said, damn this is going to change things.

You’ll enjoy yourself I think. Have several first cousins there, and vist them frequently. Always attend the A-10 b-ball tournement in March. Don’t gamble, but having family put you up takes the slickness off the place. Anyway, enjoy.

the players association makes sure that the players know what’s being offered and encourage the players to take the highest offer….but if the owners were to publicize their offers or agree that they aren’t going to pay the big contracts, they are accused of collusion…..the players are still being paid on a wage scale artificially created by steroids….just look at the jeter/arod situation as proof

Derek Jeter is crazy…..
