What benefit is a salary cap? Of the top 10 teams in salary in 2010 only the Yankees, Phillies and Giants (who were 10th) made the play offs, it is not all about buying success.

liberty JS and Wren dont listen to us…. hell if they did who knows what the team would look like… we would be looking at the 2nd yr of Griffy and prolly be begging for smoltz back in the pen…

the team runs on its fans but it doesnt make its team due to what the fans think… if they did they would be sold back to ted and would likely have Mark T holding our payroll down.

people love coke products but the CEO doesnt care what you think of who he hires and what he does…

yankee fans may not like it if jeter moves on or is disrespected but they will not care once they start the 162. yankee fans will still show up and jeter would just be a blip on the radar.

they really dont have to listen to fans… look where it got the mets

Not to sound pompous but there are a lot of folks who are baseball fans whether the teams has a winning season or not.

Yeah, but it’s the squeaky wheel here, nolie. Between screaming bandwagoners and droning stats-is-The-Holy-Grail-ers, it might seem that actual, real baseball fans are in the minority…but I don’t believe it. Not really.

in business do you think people care if they are petty?

jeter has his heart in this contract… the yankees have money in it
i dont think hal or hank really care if they look petty. they have a job to do. they have to do the best job they can if it means they are called petty or not… i dont think they care… jeter is great but… isnt it the yankee way of thinking “it doesnt matter we’ll just buy a better one anyway”?

jeter is more expendable than everyone thinks

Huge problem with this analogy. Jeter is part of the product, he is in fact one of the products. He is not an executive working in the 10th floor of the Coke office that you dont think about when drinking a can of coke. So fans do and will care about it if he is thrown overboard because they would rather overpay for some new guy.

scoots – kinda agree…I played baseball first a) cause I was good at it, b) because I loved the game. And this was in spite of growing up in the 80’s and watching some pretty bad Braves teams, whom I grew to love…Now that I can no longer play, and I don’t get to see the Braves as often as I like, it’s still baseball, whether Pirates, Royals, etc, etc…and yes, even Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies or Mets. There is more to a game than the colors a person wears…

Yeah, Cashman is taking a hard stance with Jeter. I understand he has regressed and isn’t even worth what they had offered him, but what is the point? Yankees could spend 300 million on their players without breaking a sweat. It’s not like Jeter is “just another guy”. Not to mention they gave Burnett 82.5 million over five years. If they aren’t willing to go four years, then fine, I understand that. But just go ahead and give him 18 per through 2013 and call it a day. After that, go back the truck up for Tulo….

Not to beat a dead hores… but if jeter wants respect… he is lucky he even got an offer… the fact that he was offered a contract by his old team should mean something to the guy… there are about 26 other teams that wouldnt have even made him a contract offer… he should feel lucky he ever played in the bronx.

i dont think hal or hank really care if they look petty.

Then, that would make them either uncaring of their franchise’s history or perhaps just simply obtuse. If they believe in the legacy of the franchise (and their father, by the way), then they shouldn’t appear parsimonious with a Yankee captain. Certainly, working a slimy backdoor campaign in the press is beneath their (ostensible) image.

Hard to claim the high ground of The Universe’s Greatest Sports Franchise when you’re acting like Jeffrey Loria, is what I’m sayin’.

not true… look at bernie williams… the game goes on… jeter is a nice lable on coke but the people still buy coke if the lable has santa on it or the easter bunny… jeter doesn change the attendance the merch. the people who show up to see them outside of ny it doesnt change the yankee brand in any way… it honestly doesnt change anything and the fans get over things fast! like the very next game!

Few random arbitration thoughts:

Brewers offer Hoffman arbitration?!?! http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/110243579.html
D-Backs offering LaRoche arbitration was a surprise, although I don’t really think they have anyone to play first next year and Adam may just end up accepting.
Rockies offering arbitration to Dotel was something I didn’t expect.
Red Sox offering arbitration to Felipe Lopez….(I wish our org. philosophy was like there’s. Draft picks are so important to them…..I wish I could say the same for the Braves)

It’s been a little crazy this year. Poor Braves second rounder won’t be until 100 at this rate.

I honestly have gained so much respect for the Yankees after finding out there approach towards Derek Jeter. They gave him an offer and said if dont like it try to go fond a better one on the market.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Jeter’s position in the negotiations is essentially “I am Derek Jeter, pay me.”

Chipper will not be worth what we pay him, that’s a guarantee.

This guarantee… is this baseball related, as in, game performance, or business related? I think it would be rather myopic to only view this from an on-field value level. Chipper will bring in the money even if he isn’t playing up to his 1999 MVP standards. He’s a very important part of the team.

Good point, 10Paul. If I walked around my office building, and asked every person in the building to name me some Braves, I guarantee there will only be two that each can name: Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward. What the value of that is to the franchise, I ain’t sure.

For alot of them, I’ll hear the names of Justice and Gant and McGriff and Smoltz and and Maddux and Glavine mentioned more than the names of McLouth and Prado and Freeman and Lowe and Hanson and Hudson. It is what it is.

I mean, for crying out loud, there’s one retarded janitor in my building who loves to talk my ear off about the career of Marvin Freeman, but he can’t name one reliever presently pitching for the Braves. Those almost daily conversations with that guy are always 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.

If Jeter ends up playing for the Red Sox, then we can say…He got the Smoltz treatment….

My personal opinion…Icons are of days past, and yet are still invaluable to a franchise, because not many teams left have them, and when they lose them, the franchise takes a hit. I mean players will always be associated with the team that they spent the majority of their career with, but to what does degree that respect flow, toward the player, or toward the franchise?

In most cases, it is not the player, but the franchise who take the tumble…

My personal opinion…Icons are of days past, and yet are still invaluable to a franchise, because not many teams left have them, and when they lose them, the franchise takes a hit. I mean players will always be associated with the team that they spent the majority of their career with, but to what does degree that respect flow, toward the player, or toward the franchise?

In most cases, it is not the player, but the franchise who take the tumble…

i find it hard to believe the yankees would lose any money over the loss of jeter and i find it hard to believe the yankees would take a tumble if jeter didnt end up back with them… lets be real here people… yankees will be fine without him

Philly fans are in a stoic mode on the philly.com/phils forum…

Since the Red Faux lost V-Mart to the tigers that means the Red Faux will go hard after Jason Werth…

I heard the Mets’ new GM on XM today, and he sounds a lot smarter than their last guy. Mets’ payroll after next year drops to $60 mill, giving them a lot of leverage considering it’s $140 mill now. With the new manager, who has always won, the Mutts may be shaping up in a few years.

My point was general…the fact that his is a Yankee is a moo point…

How are the icons in your lifetime (if you want to argue the point)?

Lowe was an innings eater up to that point… still is… he also was the cornerstone to change the perception of the braves to other players who didnt think of the braves as a contender… he was in a way more valuable to the braves…. and their future than jeter would be to the future of a ballclub who may pick him up as a rent a player for 4 years. pitchers are more of an impact player than a SS with declining ability,… The Braves are could have ended up with AJ but they got D Lowe!… good signing!

We were desperate for pitching in a sound economy. I wouldn’t have given Lowe the 4th year either. Of course, then he would have been in New York.
