Braves make offer to free agent Hinske

General manager Frank Wren said the Braves have made an offer to free-agent outfielder Eric Hinske, but have not decided  whether to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible outfielder Matt Diaz.

Hinske signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Atlanta last winter and hit .256 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs, including three pinch-hit homers.  He was lauded by teammates for his leadership and role in the Braves’ strong clubhouse chemistry.

The offer for 2011 is believed to be for a similar amount, and it’s unclear whether Hinske will accept it, or wait to see if the Braves increase the offer or other teams better it.

Diaz is a popular Brave who hits well against left-handers, including .273 with an .830 OPS in 2010, and .369 with a .975 OPS from 2007-2009. But he doesn’t have the versatility of recently acquired corner outfielder/infielder Joe Mather.

After making $2.5 million last season, Diaz isn’t expected to get an arbitration offer from the Braves.  He wants to stay with the Braves and has indicated he’d skip arbitration and accept a salary similar to what he made last season.

Hinske is really valuable and in this age of really bad contracts over bloated salary, i believe he is actually worth more than a million dollar, they should have at least given him a raise and made it 2 million,. which by todays standards is a chump change!

I agree Darryl. I’m reading a lot of comments, since the Uggla trade, about the Braves still needing an outfielder. Although I agree, I do feel better about the outfield with Prado trotting out to left field next year. I say add some speed like B.J. Upton and we’d have a pretty versatile roster. Already looking forward to next season. GO BRAVES.

Matt Diaz is a great hitter who had a down year – and hit .280 vs. LHP…Diaz is a good defender, believe it or not, was the fastest baserunner on the Braves (narrowly edging McCann) and is due for a big year. He love Atlanta, we love him, and he is willing to take similar to less money to stay. With injuries being what they are, I’d love to see us bring Diaz back…Early smoke signals tell us the Braves love lefty Matt Young, so bringing Diaz back as a utility OF makes a lot of sense…Gitterdone, Wren.

I hope Die Ez is here next year, would be sad to see him go. Sometimes its about more than just numbers, although I guess he just doesn’t have the versatility of Mathers. Basically can only play LF and then pitch hit vs. lefties. But come on!! ($2.5 does seem steep vs. what Hinske got though)

I hate to speculate negatively but I’m afraid that before the season is over the Braves are going to have $20 million worth sitting on the bench, Chipper with some form of injury or injuries, and McClouth with a sub .200 batting average. They better get Diaz, Hinske, and Matt Young signed and ready but I don’t know who will play center unless Wren makes a trade.

I’ve never understood the man-crush for Diaz. He’s a one-trick-pony – hitting against lefties.

Otherwise of limited value: can’t hit righties, very medicore defensive range, only very rarely throws out a runner, total imbecile running the bases, virtually useless anywhere but leftfield. I really don’t see how or why we would have a $2.5M part-time leftfielder who can’t pinch-run or be used for defense late in the game. Save the money and add it to the kitty trying to resign Uggla.

Yeah… Mather is going to take Diaz place. Mather is being annointed simply because the Braves claimed him and did their “what a valuable piece we got” song and dance.

Mather sounds like a one step up Cody Johnson. Lots of potential but mostly hype by the owning organization.

Diaz has proven he can produce at the big league level. Mather has not. Braves just released Cody Johnson. It’s pretty simple. Johnson is the best thing since sliced bread when the Braves own him. Today, he’s no so much.

Hinske, Diaz, Mather, Basically the same player. Who plays short if Gonzalez goes down? Who plays second if Uggla goes down? Prado can’t be everywhere Better think about a middle infielder to back up- and not Diory Hernandez! Frank Wren- have you thought this through?

DIAZ………………………..Would not resign him. Bad outfielder who can not for the sake of him catch a ball hit to the wall. Always misjudges flyballs when they are to the wall. Jumps to soon, or not soon enough, weak arm, average speed, and weak year.

As it has been said before, who is going to be our jack of all trades like INFANTE.

Steven Lemon

November 20th, 2010
7:05 am

Getting Uggla is a good deal, but don’t exaggerate his bat so much. Thirty homers is great, but he’s not so great in the clutch except against the Braves. Prado can play rings around him at second and is more of a clutch hitter who can play 3B, 2B, OF. I actually hated to see Francouer go, but he had become completely undisciplined at the plate and his time with the Mets and Rangers showed little improvement.

But enough chit chat… the BEST thing that has happened to the Braves this off-season is that Bobby was traded for Fredi. The Braves are still my fave NL team, and as long as Cox is gone, I don’t care if the Braves finish LAST. Better to lose consistently with bad players than to have a good team that underachieves on a regular basis due to bad management.

One person mentioned on the blog the right guy to re-sign “FRENCHY”! He’ll hit .250 and give you a little pop off the bench but MORE than anything else he’ll play defense! He can play all three outfield positions and would be pretty cheap.

I can’t see the Braves signing another big name player. Mostly what they’ll be doing is adding bench and support players. Diaz, Heinske, and Frenchy would all qualify in my opinion. Assuming Frenchy’s attitude is ok? With that said I can’t see the Braves signing Frenchy because of how bad it ended with him but there is always HOPE?

This is a no-brainer….SIGN HINSKE FOR 2 YRS!!! If the Braves don’t offer him 2 years, some other team will, and it’s not like it’s going to break the bank. His value is well above what shows up in his stats (even though his stats are good too).

It is evident he loves playing for the Braves and they need a guy like that to keep the consistency in the clubhouse, teaching yonger guys how to do things right, etc. He did this with Longoria and Evan still talks about him to the media. Hinske can do the same thing with Freeman….It’s like getting a coach who can come off the bench and hit bombs in the clutch!!!

Hinske is a valuable bench player and I think he’s going to command a little more salary this time around. My guess is that he has a market value of of about 1.5 million–1.8 million. No way the Braves sign Francouer. Trading him away took a while and was a little messy–Braves have no desire to revisit that chapter.

The Braves want speed and strong defense in center field. Ideally, the CF would be able to hit at the top of the lineup and run up some good stolen base numbers (what they wanted from McClouth, of course). Any additional outfielder signed by the Braves will need to be oriented toward this profile and potentially be able to take the position away from McClouth. There are possible targets out there–we’ll see what happens but the Braves aren’t likely to be interested in bringing Andruw Jones back.

I hope that we see Hinske with the Braves next year — even if it takes a two-year deal to do it. The man knows what to do at the plate. I wouldn’t go back to Francouer and Andruw Jones. Andruw was great when he was great, but he’s a spent force now. Frenchy is a likeable guy, but he should be a much more disciplined hitter by now. I would keep Diaz. He hits lefties really well and he plays with passion. Having traded Omar Infante, we now need to sign someone who can be as versatile as he was, even if the numbers won’t be quite as good. Do we have someone in the minors who could be that person? Interesting times, though — Frank Wren is being nothing if not proactive.

Some people on this blog seem to have the notion that Matt Diaz is a “one trick pony”. That is far from the truth. Matty has played all 3 outfield positions, first base and is the third catcher. If you want to give Freeman a day off against a “tough lefty”‘ I would prefer to see Matty play first rather than Mather! Matty has a .335 batting average against lefties, Mather hits .204. Can Mather catch, as well? All in all, Matty D at 2.5M is not a bad deal and I, for one, hope Wren understands this as well.

For all you Andruw Jones haters!! The facts are the facts , you can’t argue with them!! The Braves are on limited payroll, why would Wren bring back Diaz at 2.5 million when Andruw could be had for less than that? I agree his batting average has been slighty above the Mendoza line for the last couple of years but you can expect the same power as back in his earlier days. Don’t believe me go look it up!! Unless u didn’t like Andruw back in his prime. His hr per ab is the same as when he was in his prime!! Of course take away the 50+ hr year…. I believe his head got to big for himself and actually ate himself out of Atlanta.. Terrible yr in LA and most teams have been reluctant to sign him because of his conditioning.. I believe this has humbled Andruw.. I’m not saying Atlanta should go out and sign him to a 4yr-40 million dr deal but a 2 yr 3-4 million dollar deal so appropriate.. He could fill the center field position until someone either in the minors are ready to take over CF or until some other high priced players fall off the payroll.. You could expect Andruw to hit .220 28hr 80rbi.. Mcclouth will hit .225 but with no power and no arm..batting order…. 1)Prado 2) Heyward 3) C Jones 4) Uggla 5) McCann 6) Freddie Freeman 7) Andruw Jones 8) Gonzo 9) Pitcher.. Cmon Wren..

Gonzalez and Hinske have similar number of AB’s with the Braves after AG arrived, but Hinske was more productive with his 72 hits. Those hits produced 51 RBI. Gonzalez is set to get $2.5 mil, so how much does that make Hinske worth? 51 RBI were the 6th most RBI on the team. Hinske was a huge piece in 2010 and will only weaken the team if he is allowed to go elsewhere. Productive bats off the bench are not easy to find.
