Uggla is not that bad defensively. He had a lot of errors but also had a lot more chances and games than most at his position.

BTW, the people on here hating this deal are so far the only fans on the entire internet I have heard complain. Folks from every other team over on mlbtraderumors and such are calling this a straight up hwy robbery of the Marlins by the Bravos. The marlins fans there are hanging their heads and cursing their GM!!! This is an amazing trade. It really is. Seriously, say it with me …utility infielder who had a career high OPS of under .800 and a good lh pen arm with control issues for a 2nd baseman with a career OPS of .850+ who average over 30 hr’s……… It’s such a no brainer? we didn’t trade prospects, we didn’t move Delgado, Vizcaino, Teheran , Minor,Beachy, Marek….etc This is nothing like the Tex or JD Drew deals…….. It’s one of the best trades in franchise history.

I will have see this “defense is not that bad” before I believe it. Hubbard is gone. And from what I have seen of Uggla, he is a pretty bad fielder.

Enter your comments herethe Cardinals expect talks to heat up with Albert Pujols within the month, they may also be looking at a former All-Star second baseman. Though the free-agent market is short on second basemen, the Florida Marlins’ willingness to make power-hitting Dan Uggla available for trade has caught the Cardinals’ notice.

Not over the top in love with this trade and im not going to railroad the trade. I’m hoping that Wren doesn’t just stop here because while we upgraded ourselves defensively we’ve drowngraded what was already a bad defense. Time to get some true outfielders and it also might be time for Chipper to play more of a role off the bench. Really, at 39… how many games are we truly expecting to see him play this year? How many times next year are we going to have to go to Brooks or Mather to play games at 3rd or 2nd… or see Prado moved down to 3rd and have Mather or Diaz play LF with McLouth out in center.

Frank, i implore you… go after one of the Uptons or even Kemp. Get a natural outfielder! Add some more speed to an even slower line up that you just created.

Good move Frank Wren!! May I ask how u pulled that one off?? You must have had some nude photos of someone in the Marlins organization!! Lol just kidding.. I hope the Braves can sign Uggla to an contract extension but if they don’t they basically gave Dunn for an upgrade from Infante to Uggla. Plus we have a surplus of lefties and we traded from our strength. I don’t think the Braves need to go out and max out their payroll before the season starts in case later in the season if Chipper gets hurt again we have the flexibilty to replace him or bring Prado to 3rd and get an OF.. Gives us options. Plus we are gonna need a couple veterans in the bullpen after losing Wags and Siato.. I would say let McClouth try to get back on track possibly with our new hitting coach and bring in…… Wait for it….. Listen Frank Wren……………..bring back Andruw Jones.. He will command a salary under 1million and the last 2 years with under 300 at bats each season he has hit 17hr and 19 hr.. Plus he has passed his Fat Albert days and seems to be in better shape.. Plus he is only 33 yrs old. I know he will bat only .220 but he always played good defense and still has power. Also Braves fans would be excited to have him back!! Upton will bat about the same and cost us prospects..

I said I would wait & see what we would have to give up to get a good hitter, but I was not thinking of infante. I might like this trade if we did not have to give away our top hitter, and then face him all next year. Why not Gonzales I still do not think he is going to hit enough to justify keeping him. It does not matter because we don’t have any in put on the trades to begin with so we root for the cards that are delt our way.

I would love to see Uggla packaged in a Rasmus deal. That would truly make the team stronger. Keep Prado at 2nd and get a good CF with some speed and some power. I like the Uggla trade, but his hands of stone keep it from being an absolute OMG upgrade to the team. It was a great trade though, and I’m glad we did it.

Uggla’s defense matches his name. His offense is pretty, though. Still, Infante? I hate having to give him up. We lose 40 points in b.a. and better defense. FW gave us Jair and Javier Vasquez, so it’s possible he knows more than me.
Now, if we can just get Chip to do the right thing and ride into the sunset, we could use his 16 mil…

This is an even trade. Omar is a really good baseball player. It’s a matter of needing power, which Uggla provides, to balance the lineup. Omar doesn’t figure to hit .321 again, but he will hit for a good average. But no power. We have enough guys like that in the lineup. Uggla has to hit cleanup. McCann is much better suited for the 5 hole. I think Heyward should hit third and Chipper 6th behind McCann. It’s a spot suited to his game now, and if he’s healthy, he can produce a lot there. Sign Podsednik to hit leadoff. Prado second. Keep all the pitching. It’s a real good team that could win the division.

Chattvol…exactly…this is an average trade if you count 1) he is a rental player 2) 3rd lowest fielding % for 2B in MLB in 2010. 3) FW says this is “our big deal”. Given this…our defense still is in terrible shape, we have zero team speed and the worst OF in MLB for the FOURTH year in a row.

Nick

Infante wasn’t our best hitter!!!!! He wasn’t even in the top 5!!!!

team OPS numbers:
Ross- .871
Heyward- .849
McCann-.824
Brooks- .811
Chipper-.806
Hinske-.798
Infante-.775

He has little power. He is a good slap hitter, but good slap hitters aren’t better than guys like Uggla who last year put up an OPS of .877!!! He would have been the best hitter on the team!!!

JD,

Burrell is past his prime. What he showed in SF was a flash in the pan. Uggla is still in his prime and is almost a lock to hit 30 homers and drive in 90 runs. You can take Burrell on your fantasy team, I’m happy to have Uggla on the real Braves.

Looking at defensive stats. Here are the fielding percentages for when these players were playing 2B.

Uggla: career .980, last year .976
Prado: career .982, last year .987
Infante: career .981, last year .978

Where do you see that Uggla is such a liability on defense? He’s far from being one of the best fielding 2B but he’s not bad.

Uggla made on average ONE error every NINE GAMES — not 9 errors in 1 game like Conrad did.

He made 18 errors the entire season. He averages 30 hr’s a year and 100+ rbi’s (more hr’s and rbis than Prado and Infante combined)

2 years ago David Wright won a gold glove with only TWO less errors.

You have to watch Uggla to see how had he is at 2nd base. He will not have range, and he will stone hand many balls. He also hits 30+ HRs, so, we can live with it. By the allpstar break, you will see that not all .980 fielding percentages are created equal.

DOB, do you think there’s any mutual interest in the Braves and Andruw Jones on a one year deal to be 4th outfielder? He could platoon with McLouth in CF and one of them could play LF if/when Chipper gets hurt. Seems like we still need another OF bat or two, depending on what happens with Hinske & Diaz. Andruw only made 500K last year and hit 19/48 with .827 OPS.

Now I would like to see a Derek Lowe for Jacoby (red sox) or Gardiner (yankees) for some defense and speed in CF. Use the money to extend Uggla and add Crawford as I really feel that Chipper does not have more than 80 games a year in him.

this deal is actually decent – for a change. did Wren really do this himself ? it becomes terrific if Uggla stays after 2011 (unlikely)
to get comp picks for free agents you have to offer them arbitration, so the Braves don’t get 2 picks automatically. they often decline to offer arbitration ( Drew, Laroche, Johnson). they are the only team who has been burned twice by players unexpectedly acceptng arbitration (maddux and Soriano)

Braves opening day line-up (assuming Chipper is back): Prado, Heyward, Jones, McCann, Uggla, Gonzalez, Freeman, McClouth, and pitcher.

Assuming Chipper’s not back: Prado, Heyward, McCann, Uggla, Gonzalez, Freeman, Mather, McClouth, pitcher.

Although, to be fair, we still don’t know if they are going to sign/trade someone else yet.

I don’t think Freddi would ok a trade for Upton given the run-ins he as already had for lack of hustle and workouts. In fact, I am not sure we want that kind of cancer on the Braves.

Just ask yourself .. why are the D-Backs in such a rush to trade a top flight young talent? Well?

I wouldn’t touch Upton until his attitude improves. I am not sure about Rasmus as he is a complainer as well, but he hustles and he was complaining because he wanted to play more (and quite frankly he was right). Not sure on Elsbury either as his rib injury could affect his swing for years.

As for the whole race thing .. Atler is probably a white guy just baiting everyone to ruin a good blog. The Braves front office has never backed down from bringing in minorities. McGriff, Lee, Soriano, Pendleton, Anderson, Willie Harris, Renteria, Brian Jordan, Alfonseca, Pena, Sheffield. I could go on and on, but anyone thinking the Braves organization is racist is actually a racist themselves.

Sarcasm obviously doesn’t come through the written word very well. I could care less if Uggla has hands of stone, less range than Prado and only a .980 fielding percentage. Dude can absolutely rake it. Anyone who thinks this is a questionable trade b/c we gave up a utility infielder is nuts. I loved watching Omar play, but come on! The ONLY thing good about this is that Uggla did beat us so many times as a Marlin. (What is it with the “U” guys, anyway? We could never beat Uggla, Utley, or (until he went to prison) Urbina.)

If we could have traded some of the deadwood, this could have been a good deal. Has anybody noticed, however, that Uggla plays the same position as Prado?

And they traded Omar Infante?

I repeat, INSANITY!

I know I’m getting greedy, but I’d still love to see us add a CF of the speed/OBP variety. And fortunately those guys are a lot more affordable than the Carl Crawfords and Jason Werths of the world.

So… Jacoby Ellsbury? Any of the accountants out there know if there’s a chance we have enough to land him? Or someone like him in a trade? We have a surplus of SPs, so I wouldn’t be too distraught to see a Minor or Beachy move if that’d swing it.

We need some bench flexibility now, but I’m not too worried about the role players. FW does a pretty good job getting those guys here and in the right spots.

james- you are absolutely right. I felt bad for my Marlins friends when they told me of the trade. The mood is not good down here in SoFla
