Coach, I support you, if for no other reason than the fact that everyone called me a fool when I touted the Lee trade back in early July. While he did not meet expectations, he played an excellent 1B, and was a major upgrade over Troy “Glass” Glaus.
Didn’t cost us much, if anything at all. So the trade was a shot, not a bust.
The Teixeira trade – a bust in the long term. The Drew trade – a bust in the long term. Both trades?
A caveat: the marlins gave the $50K to the same mayor who ramrodded through the proposal for the new stadium, all the while not ever allowing it to go to a voter referndum. In a city full of political crimes that would even make Chicago blush…
That was a sin beyond compare – especially in this present economic climate.

I’ll agree with you that the Tex trade was a bust, but the Drew trade was exactly what it was supposed to be – giving up potential future gains in exchange for one year of an All-Star caliber RF. And that’s exactly what we got. Drew had an incredible season with the Braves…the fact that Wainwright has surpassed any and all expectations doesn’t make the trade a “bust”. It simply means that we sacrificed a lot for the division title that year. The Tex trade did not lead to the Braves winning anything, and therefore can accurately be described as a bust.

DOB I’ll make this gentlemen’s wager with you, regarding who’ll be the Braves’ opening day SS. I’ll take Alex Gonzalez, you can take the rest of baseball.
You could lose this wager if Wren signs JV for 1 yr contract to compete for 5th SP spot, JV can’t cut it so he’s flipped to Cards along with Nate (whom Andrew, the 1-mil man beats for CF job, we would pay half of Nate’s salary) for Pujols, who out of respect for A-Rod tradition, agrees to switch position and play SS. I mean, really, why not ?
Folks have to accept the fact that Andruw will not be a Brave in the forseeable future. This team needs to get younger gradually – especially after Chipper and Lowe.

All this talk sounds like the Braves front office (and their fans) have somehow slipped into a, “it’s ok, we’re mediocre, at least we compete” mentality. It makes me sick. The Atlanta (yes, Atlanta) Braves were the team to beat in the NL for 14 years. Do any of you freaks remember that?

I don’t believe that Nate will be as bad this season as he was last year. If he is it would almost have to be his eyes and/or that concussion.
He was close to an 800 OPS hitter when we got him. It makes no sense at all to me.
What about Nick Swisher if the NYY acquire Werth or Crawford? — Tomas
If the Yankees decide to trade him, Swisher might draw interest from the Braves. He’s bad defensively, though probably no worse than some other options that might be considered for LF, and he’s a switch hitter with power. Fourteen of his 29 homers came on the road last season, and he had a higher OPS (.885) on the road than at home (.854). The $9 mill salary for 2011 (and $10.25 mill option for 2012 and $1 mill buyout) isn’t cheap, especially for a team with payroll constraints. But it’s pretty fair, really, given Swisher’s production the past couple of seasons.
I just don’t know if the Braves would be willing to give up much talent in a trade PLUS pay that salary. But if he’s available, it might be intriguing.

“interest”, “available”, “intriguing” DOB on Braves/Swisher
Hopefully they’re not interested, he’s not availbale to NY and he’s certainly not intriguing in my eyes. He plays in a loaded lineup where he can hide in the shadows so to speak.
Bad defense: Diaz had exactly 2 errors this year, how is that bad defense???? And I was at a game where he hit a home run to tie the game up, he’s had plenty of big hits for the Braves. Everyone just thinks Hinske is better because he’s been on World Series teams. Diaz was injured this year and next year, will be back to being his usual lefty killer self. Hopefully, it won’t be for some other team like the Phils!!!!
My Andruw enthusiasm has waned over time. I’d prefer AJ and Nate be elsewhere. Nate’s gonna see extended time at Gwinnett without significant improvement. I can’t see Wren noosing that anchor around Fredi’s neck, and I don’t see Nate declining the demotion.
Am I reading too much into this, or is WREN and the org. doing everything possible to re-stock the farm with OF’ers. Seems that way to me.
OFs and 1B seems like. I dont understand if he is just building depth at AA and AAA or if anyone has a chance. Wilkin Ramirez and 2 independent leaguers recently, not to mention Mather.
Look at that, $9 mill next year for Swisher. Hell no. He’ll hit between 15-18 HR with us tops, play bad defense and I just see him overall as a lesser player with Atlanta. Braves have, what, between $15-16 mill to play with for a hitter, bench player or two AND a RP? Don’t think I’d want 9 of that 15-16 mill to be eaten up by average Swisher.
ooh, heard that colorado might be interested in hiring alabama’s offensive coordinator. can they please take him off our hands? I’m tired of that guy’s horrendous play calling. I’m not sure if he remembers that he has a pair of running backs named Ingram and Richardson on his team.
Diaz does exactly one thing good in this game and that’s hit lefties. What do you do with a guy like this coming off a year where he barely even did that?
If we could add 10 mill to our payroll then sign Crawford. That’s a no brainer. If you could get BJ Upton for under 10 mill that’s a good sign too. The 2 fastest guys in baseball who are great defensively. I’ll take one of those 2. Please stop with the Pat Burrell talk. Are you kidding me??? Our need is speedy outfielders. Not 35+ slow wash up hitters who can’t play their position. This isn’t that hard to figure out.
Maybe the Braves could trade somebody for Swisher that would get the Yankees to eat half of Swisher’s salary, that would look to be a good deal, but carrying his whole salary for 2 years would be onerous for a team with payroll constraints.
I dont understand if he is just building depth at AA and AAA or if anyone has a chance Snotboogie
I believe that Mather is out of options so I think Wren must think he has a chance of making the squad since he might not be available to stock the minors. I have no idea about the rest of them.
Is your name from The Wire? I loved that show.
DOB,
What do you think about a Lowe for Swisher deal, straight up. Then we would have an extra $5M a year to go after Werth, if we think he could play CF
Prado
Jones
Heyward
Werth
McCann
Swisher
Freeman
Gonzalez
I like that lineup, with Nate serving as the defensive replacement for Swisher.
Might still find enough money to try to get a Kevin Millwood for the 5th spot in the rotation
Hunson
Hadson (either or)
Juurjens
Minor/Beachy
Millwood
coach – If you think fixated beyond all reason is harsh, you need to go back to the minors.
Actually, I think it’s an apt description. The deal you propose won’t happen for any number of reasons such as equity and unreplaceability. To keep thinking it will happen even though it makes little sense for either team equals.fixated beyond all reason.
Coach: From now on you will all refer to me as Betty.
nolie: But, isn’t Betty a woman’s name?
Coach:
DOB: You must excuse coach, errrr, Betty. It’s 12 o’clock and time for his nap.
Coach: Mmmmm… sleepy time.
Look, I gave nolie a piece of my mind on how he talks to people sometimes on this place. Just because he knows this and that about whatever and somebody might not doesn’t give him or anybody a right to, in a way, talk down to them and degrade them. It’s a sports/Braves blog for cryin out loud and some people are just simple fans who might not know what BJ Upton’s defensive “WAR” stats are and things of that nature. Call me one of them simple fans I guess.
I like nolie, but he’s been a turd lately for some odd reason.
Bobo’s offense is scoring 33 points a game with a freshman QB, mediocre RBs, and a mediocre receiving corps outside of AJ Green. They scored 29 points a game last year with the same mediocre RBs, same mediocre receiving corps outside of Green, and the horrible Joe Cox as the QB. Bobo’s offense has actually scored more points than Bama in conference play in each of the last 2 seasons, and the Dawgs don’t have Ingram, Richardson, or secondary receivers of the quality of Maze or Hanks.
It blows my mind how some folks think Mather was brought in as THE answer. He’s a body for Spring Training, with a shot, if he produces, of making the team. Ain’t that pretty much it?
It blows my mind how some folks think Mather was brought in as THE answer. He’s a body for Spring Training, with a shot, if he produces, of making the team. Ain’t that pretty much it?
He’s the Joe Thurston of 2010.Costs nothing right now.
Does Mather have some sort of crazy story behind him, like a mom who was eaten by a grizzly bear or a dad who was a former great ballplayer but later turned to selling meth to make ends meet? It always seems the guys who come out of nowhere and put up amazing comeback seasons have a great story to tell, or at least the ones that get featured on Real Sport with Bryant Gumbel do.
Right now he’s the only addition we’ve made in what so far has been a dull few weeks. So i think that’s magnifying the move. I’m sure we will have more to complain about in 2 or 3 more weeks and he will relegated to an afterthought (or so I hope).

Just for a bit on context, Arizona traded Dan Haren last year for Joe Saunders, Rafael Rodriguez, Patrick Corbin, and a PTBNL.
So how are we are going to get Brett Gardner for Derek Lowe?
I won’t go as far as to say there is a 0% chance, because like coach said you never know, but this one just doesn’t seem very likely to me.

I believe that Mather is out of options so I think Wren must think he has a chance of making the squad since he might not be available to stock the minors. I have no idea about the rest of them.

DOB,
What do you think about a Lowe for Swisher deal, straight up.

Damn, I wish they’d offer Bobo a job.
