If the Giants were looking for a hitting coach, Barry might have a shot, but at least for the moment, I’m assuming they’re not.

Yes, if Cain pitches much better than “Puff” did in Game 1 and their bullpen does, too, and their offense can continue to score some runs. I doubt they ever hit anything near tonight’s number again – if they get into a run-scoring shoot-out with the Rangers, over the course of the series that will not end well for them.

I will definitely pray for Pete. He was incredible as an announcer. His son went to my high school and I remember in 9th grade watching a varsity basketball game with Pete (we all surrounded him). As I was JV, I had to keep stats for the varsity. At any point in the game he could tell us points, rebounds, assists for any player and he was right on. All the Hawk’s games, etc, he just got used to keeping the stats in his head.

Pete was always so at ease and cool with all of us who said hi to him every chance we got. Beat the cancer Pete!!

Phillies plans for RF (according to MLBTR), could include a certain former Brave/Met and current Ranger:

Phillies Notes: Werth & Manuel
By Mike Axisa [October 27 at 9:43pm CST]
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel provided a look into the team’s offseason plans on 610-WIP and David Murphy of The Philadelphia Daily News passes along the details. Let’s round them up…

“I think we definitely have some money to spend,” said Manuel when asked about the possibility of retaining Jayson Werth. “But at the same time, the problem is, length-wise of a contract, and also what direction we want to go in.”
Manuel said he believes they can develop a top-notch hitter, presumably referring to top prospect Domonic Brown, allowing them to target high-end pitchers during the offseason.
Reporters floated the idea of a rightfield platoon if Werth departs, and Manuel acknowledged that possibility. Murphy says not to be surprised if they target a lesser righthanded bat like Jeff Francoeur or Matt Diaz to pair up with Brown or Ross Gload. Ben Francisco could also be an internal option in this scenario.
“I think [GM Ruben Amaro Jr.]’s got a lot on his plate as far as which way he wants to go in getting it done,” said Manuel. “But I think he can. Evidently he definitely still wants to negotiate with Werth. It sounds like he’s going to talk to Scott Boras, his agent, and things. That’s definitely the first priority. And then that will lead us into which way he wants to take our team.”
As for his own contract, which is up after next season, Manuel indicated that Amaro told him they’d speak this fall, probably before Christmas.

If were unable to acquire a big bat the Barry for hitting coach really wouldn’t be a bad idea. He was able to hide the HGH / Steroid use pretty effectively for years in SF. So with his connections there might be a few hitters in our lineup he could turn into monsters. :???:

It seems most scouts and managers see that Francoeur can hit the ball but just won’t listen and use plate discipline. If someone, maybe Philly can pound some sense into his head he will be okay. He is his own worse enemy.

Hey! Kudos to the Giants on knocking out Cliff Lee. I know that pitchers are not really unhittable but I can say that the Giants have knocked off all the Big Boys this season. They have had a season that they and their fans can be proud of this year.

Francoeur in Philadelphia would be a disaster. As soon as Jeff started slumping, the City of Brotherly Love would make his life a living hell. Francouer is a good guy and he deserves better than being ripped to shreds by the mongrels that are many Phillies fans.

The Phillies getting Francoeur? Sounds like a subtle form of psychological warfare the Phillies are using so we run out and sign Frenchy.

They’re not going to get Werth AND get top of the line pitching – not without spending like the Yankees or Red Sox. Not sure how sustainable that kind of payroll will be for them – first time they fail to make the playoffs, their attendance goes down the drain.

If Frenchy does play for the Philies, he’ll have to go out to right dressed in plastic like Gallagher the first time he hits a slump. NO telling what substances might be thrown at him from the stands.

Manuel MUST be a terrible manager, who doesn’t teach his players patience, making contact, etc., etc. while batting. But then, Howard was TOO patient. Makes no sense. I would immediately fire Manuel and hire a manager who knows what he is doing, because we know from the Braves experience that the best team should ALWAYS win in a post season series, unless the manager is a dumba$$. I’m just saying…the Buck Commander wants to go out winning meaningful games. He has to know the only way he can get there is if the Braves keep the pen strong and find somebody that can play CF. No more reclamation projects. No more possible comeback player of the year candidates.

If the Braves need to put Chipper’s salary on a payment plan, I think Liberty could find a way to borrow the money, rather than us going hat in hand to Chipper.

You know the saying is “nothing ventured, nothing gained” so the question, with the Braves budget, becomes one of where we want to assume risk?

Assume too much risk in the bull pen and you won’t be playing in the fall.

Assume too much risk with your offense and you’ll lose 4 games by 1 run in the wild card race.

My main point is that I think Beachy and Minor as our 4th and 5th starters would constitute a lower acceptance of risk than another year with rotating left and centerfielders.

coach joe: if chipper deferred salary, the amount would count however the Braves’ accountants wanted it to count, at least for their purposes.

And really, their accounting is all that matters, since there is no salary cap and since they are going to set their own payroll and follow whatever accounting policies they want to follow; in other words, if they want to amortize the amount over the total number of years, or prorate signing bonuses, etc., there is no hard-and-fast set of rules on how to tabulate payroll.

That’s why, when payroll amounts are given by other groups and computed by us in the media, while those figures are interesting to use comparing teams, really don’t matter in the end. All that matters is what the team comes up with and what there they set their payroll. If they wanted to defer $10 mill of Chipper’s money and he agreed to do it (players union would probably ask that he get interest on the money), then the Braves could count it all in the year they pay him or amortize it over the total number of years the team is paying him, or somewhere between. There are no rules when it comes to how the team wants to do its own accounting.

I would add that teams remember what happened when Arizona deferred several big salaries years ago for Randy Johnson and others. When attendance fell off after their World Series year, the team almost went bankrupt when it was time to pay off those deferred salaries. Not saying the Braves’ situation could be comparable, but teams generally don’t like deferring salary to the future and taking away future payroll flexibility. There are exceptions when necessary.

Francoeur’s only value, to me, is as a platoon partner playing only against lefties. He’s pretty useful against them and is a decent defender in RF. However, no sane person should allow him to play every day or get anywhere near 500 AB.

What if Minor is no better than Jojo or Chuck James and Beachy is no better than Charlie Morton?

Just sayin?!?!?! Hudson, Lowe and Hanson can’t be described as a three headed monster like Halladay Oswalt and Hamels. We can’t afford for our 4 and 5 to be rookie pitchers. I’d rather trade away prospects than a proven pitcher like JJ.

Anybody recall what happened 15 years ago today?

….

Braves won the World Series. Tom Glavine and Mark Wohlers combined on a 1-hit shutout as Braves beat Cleveland 1-0 in Game 6 to take the Series.

Braves won the World Series

And it required Glavine to pitch a SHUTOUT in the final game for Cox to even be able to win the 1 championship. Bobby’s finally gone now so let the championships rain upon us!!!!!
