This game against the Bengals is a great reason why over the years, I’ve learned not to get too high or low with any Atlanta team. Just when you think a corner is being turned…BAM, you slam into a wall.
Ross made $4 million this year and would receive a raise in his final year of arbitration, but Sabean left a clear impression that the club will tender him a contract.
“His situation is not daunting,” Sabean said. “His number isn’t going to go off the map. His platform year was last year, not this year, so it’s a very affordable situation if we go that route.” Giants GM Brian Sabean
I’m glad Ross helped the Giants beat the Phillies, but who knows, they may change their mind about him. After the World Series he will still be Cody Ross no matter what he does. It’s a long way to spring training, I hope the Braves can do better that Cody freakin’ Ross.

Secondly, I think this will be a very exciting WS after all. I mean Lee vs Lincecum? NL best pitching against a great hitting Rangers team.

But the Braves have nothing to speak of at the moment at any position other than pitching. And Wren could get that really good player with some of our pitching prospects, like a Colby Rasmus. But the big question is, will he? I personally don’t believe he has it in him to make that deal.
To me, the Andruw Jones thing is buried forever. Let it go because he’s not the answer to any of our problems. He’s just not. As a platoon, yes. But the thing is, we already have platoons on the team anyways. There’s no use for him here.
Jerry, I think any pitcher Wren would be willing to surrender – and I’m thinking Jurrjens – would require talent plus in return. Pitching is still at a premium in the majors. I think if Wren was willing to part with some pitching talent, he’d probably get a healthy return. I’m starting to think Wren may just do so. Just a hunch at this point.
I totally expected the 49ers to lose today. Flying across the country, just won their first game against their cross-city rivals, playing a team that had not won a game all year, flying to London right after the game…throw in Alex Smith getting hurt (I know he’s not great, but he’s better then David Carr) and it was a given.
So glad the Phillies fans heard the Phat Lady sing in their own “always sold out” park. Some dynasty! BTW, Martin Prado has officially become the premier second baseman in the NL; ‘ol Chase looked a lot like Brooks Conrad during the playoffs (no offense, Brooks). Ryan Howard can be a terror in the regular season, but he’s less than clutch in the playoffs. And as of 2011, the Phillies will be Werthless. GO BRAVES! Hey, has anyone seen the little Philly pukes that used to litter our Braves’ blogs?
Anybody else the least bit concerned about our closer next season, whoever that might be? I’m betting Kimbrel is the guy, but he’s so young and will go through that learning process.
Neftali Feliz is young. That didn’t make a difference. Besides, the Braves have groomed Kinbrel to be a closer since he stepped into the minor league system. Hes ready.
I think any pitcher Wren would be willing to surrender – and I’m thinking Jurrjens – would require talent plus in return.
As I’ve said B4 and posted some ESPN Insider stuff that agrees, JJ does not have the trade value at this time that he did B4. It is highly unlikely that he will bring back an established producer by himself let alone added talent, perhaps a young guy with some promise who is not yet established in the bigs.
Like it would be hard to find a warm body more capable than Andruw in the OF at this point of his career. Even if he has to dumpster-dive, I expect Wren will fish up someone better than AJ.
Not whining- being realistic. My expectations for this team have gone from “playoffs” to “please just win one game” to “please just get blown out because you play like crap and I can’t take you teasing me anymore.” This is the life of a die hard 49ers fan. Sad, I know
You’re looking at those moves like they were huge commitments on Wren’s part. No one is disputing Melky and Ankle were awful, but they were parts of larger deals. Look at the bigger picture.
You look at the bigger picture. If Wren did something like that, what makes you think he will get someone better than Andruw this year? Last year he didn’t, what makes you think this off season will be any different.
I’d gladly take Andruw back from all the crap I saw in the outfield this year. I would have taken him back the second the Braves traded him. True, he struck out a lot, but he had great defense, something we lacked this year.
After watching the Melky clown-car show in the OF in 2010, I think Wren will target someone who can at least field the position AND hit for some power. Is that guy going to be a reclamation project again (similar to 1B with Glaus this season)? Yeah maybe, but I still think it will be someone better overall than Andruw.
Russell, he may get someone better, but he may not and I still wouldn’t get my hopes up. If we had the spending money like the Yankees, then maybe it would be different.
I just don’t see what Andruw brings to the table at this stage. A .729 OPS on the road (away from the Cell) in 135 ABs this year with 7 HRs.
Maybe another stop in the ATL would rejuvenate his career. More likely, he would be slightly below an NL average OF for us with declining defensive skills. I mean, can he even play CF everyday anymore? I doubt it.
He is another platoon player for the Braves. At least he’s right-handed, I guess.
he may and he may not. There is a reason that Baltimore fired him
the Baltimore owner is an interfering azswipe who fired Wren mostly because he refused to hold up transportation for Ripken. He was not a GM there long enough to be fired for failure to make the right trades and he could only trade for what the owner wanted anyway.
Ankle was a midseason gamble, and other than Collins (a 5′7″ hard to project LHP), he gave up garbage for garbage.
I wouldn’t exactly classify Gregor Blanco as garbage. Between 2 teams, he hit .283 this year. That could have helped us out tremendously instead of the sub Mendoza line players we ran out there in Ankiel and McLouth. And as for Melky, we aren’t even talking about the players that came with him. We are discussing outfielders, and Melky sucked at that just like the aforementioned.
Daddy D’z on a sunny Sunday afternoon in October. BBQ brisket, green beans, cornbread, red beans & rice, and sweet tea. (And she had the pork, plus a mac & cheese side, both of which I ended up eating quite a bit.)
Do we get any comp picks for WAGNER retiring, or releasing SAITO or CABRERA? — richbrave
You don’t get comp picks for a player who retires. As for Saito, his contract stipulated he be released to become a free agent at season’s end despite not having six years’ service; so, no, you don’t get comp picks for him.
Cabrera wasn’t a free agent, so of course you don’t get compensatory picks for releasing him. If that were the case every team would release every mediocre/bad player they had at season’s end, regardless of service time, and just stock up on draft picks.
And you certainly don’t get compensatory picks for any free agent if you release him before the arbitration date for free agents, which is why no team releases players this early who might end up being classified (Type A or Type B) free agents. Which is what I tried to explain to the guy on here a few days ago who just thought the Braves should release Derrek Lee and everyone else on the roster that he didn’t like, regardless of whether of the rules regarding free agency, compensation picks, etc.
(Remember last winter, when the Braves had to decide whether to offer Soriano arbitration, if they wanted to get draft pick compensation? And they did offer it, and he accepted?)
I remember last year…at one point we were set to get something like 3 first round draft picks – our own, one for Gonzalez, and one for MFIKY. Then we lost ours for signing Wagner (definitely worth it), Soriano accepted arb, and we ended up getting a second round pick for Gonzalez because the O’s 1st round was protected
jeffrey d, we rode there on a motorcycle, not a tractor. Although a tractor would be quite interesting to see in that neighborhood of Atlanta, as anyone who’s familiar with Daddy D’z or the area can attest (it’s practically downtown, about a mile or so from Turner Field, on Memorial Drive).
I don’t know what Andruw would do if he were here, but I would be willing to bet that he would catch anything that lands in his glove. McLouth couldn’t guarantee that. Also, Andruw at his fattest never got turned around on the ball and always got great jumps. Also, when it came time for Andruw to throw the freakin ball, he threw it. I saw too things this year that I didn’t think was possible. I saw Melky throw a ball from centerfield to right field like a girl in grade school. I also saw McLouth hold the ball in medium depth centerfield and a runner on third who tagged and scored with no throw. The situation was perfect to throw home and Nate refused to. I also saw him lob a ball over the cutoff man like he was being paid to throw the game. No matter what you think of Andruw, he was great in the outfield and was even good in his worst year here. He doesn’t even have to play center. He could play right with Heyward in center.
If I want to be honest with myself I don’t see a big time star as our offseason hitter. I really don’t. I see a semi star guy and probably another platoon guy to split time with McLouth in CF/LF. It just won’t be anything major.
Remember, we were planty good enough on offense before both Chipper and Prado went down. Add to the fact Heyward got hurt and that fu*** him up all year and I believe that, plus Infante looked whipped towards the end there. Wasn’t the same guy in the postseason. Oh, and McCann had a down year.
The team has got to somehow someway play better defense too. That got rediculous. I don’t ever remember seeing a Braves team play such poor D. Not in my lifetime of following this team, since ‘92.
I just googled Daddy D and it is an interesting looking place. I envy anyone that can eat large portions of mac N cheese, hey even a small portion. Seems like big fun is had there with the Blues bands and all.
Wren traded for a incumbent All Star in Nate McLouth…nobody knew that he’d hit 10 points under .200 in his first full season with the Braves
Wren traded for a player that with the exception of one year when he hit .276, he never hit above .258 and that was a 3-year stretch. When he was traded here, he was batting .256 and the rest is history. Offensively and defensively, Nate McLouth is a joke and continues to be a joke. I think I would rather have one of those pitch back thingies out in center instead of Nate. At least that way if a ball hits it, the ball will bounce back to the infield.
The team has got to somehow someway play better defense too. That got rediculous. I don’t ever remember seeing a Braves team play such poor D. Not in my lifetime of following this team, since ‘92.
I’ve seen every team in a Braves uniform since they came here in 1966 and there has never been a more pathetic defensive team than I watched this year. I remember all the years at Atlanta Stadium when prior to the season they held MotoCross there every year. The infield was torn up and it baked hard and took some of the most ridiculous hops you’d ever see on an infield. But outside of all the infield woes, we at least had outfielders who caught the ball and threw the ball. This year, we all had to hold our breath and wonder, “is this fly ball going to be the next lowlight” for this season? It was a miracle that we made the playoffs. If we had some of the pitchers we had back in the 809s and before, we would have set franchise records in losses. Pitching was our only saving grace, and that’s not taking anything away from Prado and Infante.
I dunno…call me an optimist, but I see that Nate hit .276 in just his first full season, and I’ll be hoping he bounces back
You must be the eternal optimist, and I’m the exact opposite. All I know is that he has had 2 full seasons since he hit .276 and he isn’t getting any better. Hell, I’d even take the .256 he hit 2 years ago if he could field his position, but he can’t. And personally, I don’t really think you can have a defensive slump unless you just aren’t taking care of your body. Over the years, I’ve never seen a outfielder get turned around and misjudge balls as I’ve seen with McLouth to the point where I just lowered my head and stared at the ground, an never have I ever stood and screamed at the tv, “THROW THE BALL YOU AZZHOLE”. But I did this year. I don’t wanna see that lack of defensive output again.
You know the food’s good at a place called Daddy D’z. They bring folks in with good chow instead of fancy names. If all the waitresses are ugly as Hell, your mouth should begin watering immediately; it’s gonna be GOOD!

Jerry… I’m not sure that will be the case. Wren usually does his reclamation projects as placeholders until minor league talent can come up. There’s no real outfield talent in the higher minors for the Braves. If Wren is willing to give up some pitching, he may just entice a GM to surrender a talented outfielder – again, preferably a younger one who the Braves can control awhile.

Andruw Jones is old, fat, and slow. I don’t care if he still hits for power (he did play at the Cell last year) – he is not the answer.

Neftali Feliz is young. That didn’t make a difference. Besides, the Braves have groomed Kinbrel to be a closer since he stepped into the minor league system. Hes ready.

As I’ve said B4 and posted some ESPN Insider stuff that agrees, JJ does not have the trade value at this time that he did B4. It is highly unlikely that he will bring back an established producer by himself let alone added talent, perhaps a young guy with some promise who is not yet established in the bigs.

At least he’s right-handed, I guess.

the Baltimore owner is an interfering azswipe who fired Wren mostly because he refused to hold up transportation for Ripken. He was not a GM there long enough to be fired for failure to make the right trades and he could only trade for what the owner wanted anyway.
