After hiring Fredi Gonzalez as their new manager, Braves officials can focus attention on improving a punchless outfield that ranked among the National League’s worst in 2010.
The starting rotation and bullpen are solid and the infield, including shortstop Alex Gonzalez and rookie first baseman Freddie Freeman, seems set. The outfield? It needs help.
“We’re going to have to be creative,” said Wren, who probably doesn’t have funds to get into the expected bidding wars for free-agent outfielders Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth. “We’re going to have to take a look at every possibility.”
Wren said the Braves are operating under the assumption that third baseman Chipper Jones — owed $28 million over the next two seasons — will make it back from knee surgery and join an infield with Gonzalez, Freeman and second baseman Martin Prado.
“I think that’s our likely, hopeful Opening Day lineup,” Wren said. “Once you get in discussions and once you start taking other things into account, you start looking at other aspects of your club. But I think outfield is going to be a focus.”
Braves outfielders finished last in the NL in home runs (40), 14th in average (.250) and 15th in slugging percentage (.389). Other than standout rookie right fielder Jason Heyward (18 homers, 72 RBIs), no outfielder had eight homers or 45 RBIs.
Nate McLouth will be back because he’s owed a $6.5 million salary in 2011, plus a $1.25 million buyout of a $10.65 million option. He’s virtually untradable after hitting .190 with six homers and 24 RBIs in 85 games, so the Braves hope he plays like he did for a brief stretch in September after returning from the minors.
He can play center or left, so at least they have flexibility in the search for outfield help.
Wren cautioned it could be difficult to land a power bat. But the Braves need to add at least one productive outfielder after getting little offense in center and left most nights from the combination of Melky Cabrera, McLouth, Matt Diaz and Rick Ankiel.
Because they have pitching depth, there is speculation the Braves might offer starter Jair Jurrjens, who could be enough to get the Braves a productive outfielder in a trade.
While Wren is candid about trying to trade surplus starter Kenshin Kawakami, he’s not eager to dangle other starters as trade bait. The Braves return veterans Derek Lowe and Tim Hudson, with two seasons left on their contracts; rising talents Tommy Hanson and Jurrjens; and rookies Brandon Beachy and Mike Minor.
As things stand, Beachy and Minor would compete for the fifth spot.
The Braves finished third in the league with a 3.56 ERA. Their starters were fifth at 3.80, despite missing Jurrjens for much of the season with various injuries.
“We’re going to be very hesitant to trade pitching because I think that’s our strength,” Wren said. “As highly thought of as the Giants’ and Phillies’ rotations were, the last two weeks of the season we matched up with those rotations very well. And that’s without [Jurrjens] being available for us.”
For Braves fans who might wonder why the team wouldn’t trade from a position of strength — starting pitching — to improve a weakness if it can’t do so via free agency, consider that Wren might be posturing just a bit. If the Braves were interested in trading a starting pitcher for a productive outfielder, it would behoove them not to let other teams know right away.
The Braves’ bullpen should remain strong, despite the loss of retired closer Billy Wagner and free-agent setup man Takashi Saito. The Braves control the contracts of sidearmer Peter Moylan, left-hander Eric O’Flaherty, Cristhian Martinez, and a trio of flame-throwing rookies: Craig Kimbrel and lefties Jonny Venters and Mike Dunn.
Kimbrel has shown he’s ready for the closer role, and Venters was one of the top relievers in baseball. Kimbrel could be the primary closer or share the role with Venters.
Wren said the Braves might look to add a veteran after losing Wagner as a valuable mentor, but also mentioned Moylan as a possibility for leadership if the Braves stick with the bullpen they have. Kyle Farnsworth’s $5.25 million option won’t be picked up.
In the infield, the Braves aren’t taking the wait-and-see stance with Freeman that they had — at least publicly — after the 2009 season with Heyward, who had no previous major league experience and had spent only a week above Double-A.
“It’s a lot different than a year ago. We were not talking about, or putting pressure on Jason Heyward,” Wren said. “Even though a year ago, I was pretty confident that he was our Opening Day right fielder. I didn’t want to say it, didn’t want to put that on him.
“Freddie’s a whole different story. Freddie’s already gone to Triple-A and experienced it, and dominated, and was [International League] rookie of the year. He’s come to the big leagues and shown that he can play here. We saw defensively that he was outstanding. We saw him get big hits, saw him hit a home run off [Roy] Halladay.”
The club has a $2.5 million option on Gonzalez and no desire to replace him despite a September slump and modest statistics after coming in a July trade from Toronto.
“You look at Alex in August, he was outstanding,” Wren said. “Then he got into a funk trying to do too much because we were struggling to score runs and all of a sudden the whole top of our order stopped hitting.”
“I think Alex will be what he’s always been. He’ll be somewhere between .260-.270, hit 15-20 home runs, drive in 70, 75, 80, and play really good shortstop.”

They need a big time bat…seems like this has been the case for a long time becase it has. I think deals can be made, and if the Braves have learned anything it’s better to deal than to sign free agents, usually. They have all the capital in world with the top level guys, plus the guys in the middle to low minors who are top prospects. With such a high value on pitching, and prospects in general, it would behoove them to sell high on one they feel may be overvalued.

They need a bat…we’ve been down this road, up this road, around this road for quite awhile now. That being said, they have the capital to make a deal happen. I advicate a trade because free agency is often over priced, and they have scarce resources to begin with. They have plenty of young pitchers at the top of the organization, and plenty in the middle to low minors that have good prospect ratings. You figure which one or two is overvalued and use them now, sell high so to speak. Always risky, but all these guys can’t be in the rotation and lord knows this team needs offense. Good news is a trade piece should be affordable salary wise, rather young, and fit what your looking for in terms of power because this would be a legit guy the Braves would give up. I think it’ll get done, and Wren, as always, will be creative.

I know I’m dreaming but an outfield with Heyward and Crawford would cause Braves fans to come out of the woodwork. It’s really the only hole on the entire team. He would add average, power, and speed – and butts in seats. If I was Wren, I would be pleading case to anyone at Liberty that would listen. He’s the right guy at the right time. How much more payroll are we talking about, DOB? With all of the payroll they are losing (Wags, Saito, Lee), it can’t be that much more, can it?

How about going after carl crawford … then asking sid bream if he would like to rejoin the braves on 1st base . That would give a good bat . I would also sign Steve Avery or see if he wanted to rejoin for 1 more time if I was in charge . I would also get Chipper to be short stop and put charlie leibrandt on 3rd base . I would ask otis nixon to be the batting coach . That would be a team to take them all the way to the dome

Mentioned this on the other blog – Keep trying to find possible outfield options out there (realistic ones) and name that keep coming back to is Juan Rivera…
Seems as if Angels are wanting to move him. Coming off of a down year may not take much to get him, and hopefully he rebounds in a contract year. Not saying the dude is great, but even if he hits 255 with 17 bombs that’s better than what was out there this year, and doesn’t strikeout that much. Also, can play a little 1st and back up as your right handed bat there when needed. Only makes 5 mil next year…
Definitely not a lot of right handed power options, and I know the Braves have shown interest in him before.

I think with the Braves having some funds to be flexible with, and trade bait such as Jair and KK, they should be able to acquire the outfield bat that they seek. Crawford will get a huge payday from a big payroll club, so that puts the Braves out of the running. You may as well throw Jayson Werth in that discussion too. If Chipper and Prado come back healthy, which I feel they will, the only hole they really need to fill is left field. I think McClouth will come back better than he had showed this year (It couldn’t get much worse!), but heck, his defense is almost worth what he’s getting paid (plus, he’s pretty much untradeable with what he’s getting paid). Wren has shown that he’s committed to winning. Look at the trade for Gonzalez trade, He got rid of a whiney baby in Escobar and got a guy that has more pop, and equal glove and a clubhouse guy. Chemistry is everything in this game folks. Who knew besides Lee that he was playing with a torn thumb ligament? Fact being, Wren is fixed on putting together the best team that he can put on the field. I have confidence that he can get an outfield bat that can put runs on the board, whether through trade means or the open market.

Fredi does alot of the little things that Cox never really did (at least in this decade), and that is hit and run, STEAL bases, etc. You add things like this up and you can add at least 10 more wins. Fredi gets the most out of his players.

Omar is way too valuable in the infield. Sure, he can play the outfield in a pinch, but they need a seasoned outfielder with some pop. I agree that Omar would be better served in the infield but from the looks of things he isn’t going to have anywhere to play as long as Chipper and Martin are healthy. He finished 3rd in the league in batting average so I think he’s earned the right to start somewhere.

$30 Million for 200 innings and 15+ wins.
If you look at what’s available via free agency – who is a better investment?
Cliff Lee is looking at $100 Million – at least.
Carl Pavano gave the Twins 200 innings and 15 ish wins the last two years.
Can you get him for less than $30M? He is projected as Type A – might cost you a draft pick.
I think DLowe is a good investment at $30M – MUCH better than $45M coming into this season.

The Braves are freeing up enough salary that they can go for Crawford. Fredi likes small ball and Carl would be the perfect lead off guy to get on first steal second and score on a single. It has been many years since the Braves had any speed at all in the lead off spot. Come on, Wren! Get the board to outspend the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies for once. Derrick, you are right in the fact that Omar has proved himself to be a starter, but he isn’t going to hit the 20+ homers that the Braves are probably seeking. Way too many holes in DOB’s article. Every now and then I’d like to see a little ‘tude in the reporting and questioning.
1. They’re counting on Chipper to be healthy? In what year, 1999?
2. The Braves wouldn’t have been anywhere near the playoffs this year without Infante rippin’ it every game. And he’s not even mentioned in the 2011 plans?
3. They’re counting on McLouth to return to the form he displayed in what, 3 games this year? That’s laughable. These are the same experts who predicted a 35 HR, 110 RBI season from what was left of Troy Glaus.
4. Fredi is accustomed to managing a team that can steal a base. Welcome to the land of slow-motion baseball, my friend.
5. When Mr. Wren offers up Kawakami in a trade, what will be his response when the other GM stops laughing, and says, “Come on…seriously now.”

You’re joking, right? Mclouth has to be one of the worse centerfielders in the game. And opposing runners took the extra base on him because they knew he wouldn’t throw or would consistantly miss the cutoff man. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings in the least if the team would just eat his contract, but they won’t do that. They would rather he stay in the lineup and cost us games with his defense and his offense.

My plan to sign Crawford (ie winning will cover breaking the bank):
1. Convince Chipper to retire after 2011. Restructure his deal and put him on the “Bobby Bonilla” plan. I don’t have a problem with Chipper coming back next year, but it’s hard to see him having much value in 2012 at age 39 at third base. He def won’t have $15m value. He does not now, but he is a Brave for life and he gets paid now for what he did then. I’m fine with that.
In 2012, Chipper, KK and McLouth come off the books.
The outfield is Heyward, Crawford and junk in LF. The infield is Freeman, Lee (if he’d do a 2 year deal for reasonable money), Prado, A Gon, Chipper/Infante. The Catching is set.
It’s hard to assemble good pitching and we have it. It will be gone before we know it. The time to act is now. Keep JJ.
So, basically, 2011 will be a little expensive, but 2012 will return to normalcy. Winning in 2011 will offset the expense. The 2010 would have advanced with Chipper and Prado in the lineup. Imagine what the 2011 lineup could do with a 2nd year Heyward, Kimbrel, Venters, Beachy/Minor in various roles, and Hinkse and Lee coming off the bench.
So, sign Crawford, Lee and Hinske and let’s do this!

Much easier to find a bat than a talented young starter. I think we should consider selling high on McCann – about the only trade chip we have. His defense is only going to get worse, he’ll never be a classic #4 hitter, and as catcher he doesn’t play every day. Could trade McCann for a LF/CF. Or better yet, sign Crawford as a FA, then trade McCann for someone like a Tulowitzki or Stephen Drew or for an OF like Kemp, Upton, Rasmus., etc., then spin Gonzalez off for a back-up OF, C, or MI.
Bottom line: need to get better at several positions, not just one…

Some of you know what an Omar fan I am, but it does seem a little odd to keep the #3 hitter in the league on your bench. The idea of obtaining two difference-makers for the outfield may be far fetched, and I would rather add one very good bat instead of two mediocre bats. We already have plenty of questionable outfield bats. We need one that throws some fear into pitchers–someone they want to pitch around.
To me, this means you start Omar in left, and focus on obtaining a center fielder. So Kemp looks like a good target. Any other ideas of the CF variety?

Infante needs to be a utility man, not penciled in as an everyday starter. If he plays well he’ll get plenty of at-bats and won’t get over-exposed defensively.
How long is it going to take Wren to figure out players aren’t going to hit as many home runs in the Ted/NL as they do in AL home parks in Toronto and New York? I don’t see Gonzalez producing those kind of numbers here.
It’s no secret the Braves are well-endowed in starting pitching and flat as a pancake in the outfield. Would be nice to see the Braves scouts help land us an emerging youngster for one spot. As it stands now, the Braves players better spend all winter hitting off left-handed pitching because that’s all they’ll see next year. Heyward, Freeman, McCann, McLouth, all left-handed power hitters, counter-balanced by Prado, Gonzalez, and Jones? Ugghhh! I see team strikeout records being challenged.

Dunn would be cheaper than Crawford, but, then we have a bopper with no speed and poor defense in LF, if he can even still play LF. Then we have to put our junk scrap in CF. CF is a very important position. Andruw Jones was partially responsible for those staffs being so good. Break the bank, solve CF with Crawford. It’s almost the only move this team needs to make.

I am convinced that McDowell did something and solved Lowe. Now that Lowe is not as mediocre anymore, our pitching is solid. We also have Teheran and Vizcaino at some point in the future. Medlin, who I think is better in the bullpen comes back at the end of 2011 and we have him for 2012. I think Meds gets exposed as a starter eventually.

The very best scenario is for the Chipster to move full time to his tree stand and free up the bucks (pun intended) to sign Werth, Crawford, or Cruz. Wow. Not impressed with the left side of the Braves infield going into 2011. Chipper just doesn’t belong on a diamond anymore (as a player) and Gonzalez is so-so. But Wren is stuck with the arrangement, for the most part, unless Chipper hangs ‘em up.
Outfield… Well, I think Wren will do something to add a power bat, but he’s not going to tip his hand, so we’ll see what develops.

Chipper is coming back. He is very close to a few milestones, and he was last seen on a field crumpled in a heap. He is coming back, and we owe him that. The KEY is convincing him to retire after next year, and restructure his contract like the Mets did Bonilla – pay him $1m for 20 years or something ridiculous. We’ve seen the best of Chipper, obviously. Infante will not be crying for playing time next year.

I think KK has some gas left in the tank and would be a productive starter for a team which would give him a few runs on the board. JJ for Nelson Cruz could make a lot of sense for both sides. The only problem is any team aquiring JJ will be concerned with his health, which will diminish his value. However, good pitching is worth more than good hitting.

CF is set with McLouth. He is untradable and he sucks in LF.
Barring a trade, we will be left with Ordonez, Burrell, Ross or Damon for LF. This is why I think a trade is the answer. Who? I don’t know. But I’m sure the deal will involve one of our pitchers for an OF with probably a few other pieces involved.

I agree. That’s why they SHOULD sign Crawford. They SHOULD have the money given the contracts coming off the books due to free agency, options, and probable non-tenders.
I think how they handle Diaz will tell us a lot. He will be too expensive in his last year of arbitration to be a bench player or even a platoon player. I think they should either keep him and let him start in LF full time or non-tender him. Don’t get me wrong, I like Matty. But its not fair to him at this point to have him in a part-time role.
I could see a trade for Colby Rasmus, Corey Hart, Delmon Young, Julio Borbon, Nelson Cruz, or Juan Rivera. I think these are more realistic options and may not cost Jurrjens to get.

Wren is a bit too high on prospects and not hard enough on vets. Gonzo is mediocre (he stopped hitting an was an error machine at SS – I really dislike the “trying to do too much” line) and FF had a couple of hits and one homer off a pitcher who never saw the kid before.
Recall Schafer hit a few homers in his first week as a MLer.
FF ML sample size was too small to even make a comment about what he could do next year.
Heyward, who many have said is head and shoulders above FF was a non-factor on this team in Sept and the post season. He was a tired rookie who was over matched by quality pitching. It’s ok it happens but don’t tell us b/c FF was in AAA he will be on a higher trajectory than Heyward given the gap in their respective natural skills.
Wren will end up getting a cheap vet RH 1B during ST or in June when its clear he needs one.
He will trade JJ or one of his prime minor league arms by Jan for a bat.
There is no way around it.
He either needs a 25 mm payroll boost (not happening) or he will have to trade some arms. He is not fooling anybody.
If he doesn’t do this he will have another team which will be running on fumes come August and be in the same sad position of trading for next year’s Ankiel and Farnsworth hoping to catch a break.
The problem is you cannot rely on the Phillies to be injured for the 1H of the season and expect the rest of the NL East to be push overs so by August it may be too late.
Sorry but this team needs a LF, CF, 1B Vet bat backup, probably a new SS, revamped bench and a pen arm.
With an 84mm payroll & 13mm tied up in Nate & KK good luck Frank. Good luck indeed.

This reminds me of car modding. Lots of guys spend $500 here, $1000 there and end up with noisy crap that is not that much faster. Some guys blow the wad on a stage II turbo and rebuild the bottom end and they get real power. The former is called rice, and it’s how the high school kids do it. The latter is how the the big boys do it.

Yes, I believe any 3 of Lowe, Hudson, Hanson and Jurrjens can compete with Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels. These pitchers have proven they can handle the Phillies line up.
What exactly do you propose we trade for Felix? The Mariners would start with Hanson and want 2 – 3 more top prospects to go along with him. Its not going to happen.

I know about the riff with Rasmus and Pujols calling him out. That said, they will still not move him. Kemp’s off year this year seemed to most be lack of effort and mental involvement. He was all about being an LA stud and dating Ri-Ri and stuff, but was benched frequently to rest his head. It did not work. The man throwing the base ball is just as Important as the home runs . However the interesting thing is . The 1996 Braves team and the 1995 braves team over shadow the 1998 team . We need a speed guy at the top of the lineup. Heyward led the team with what 11 stolen bases? If we’re not hitting we’re not producing runs. We need that lead off guy like Furcal was that can steal 40 bases and put pressure on the defense to generate some runs. You know it’s sad when Andruw Jones would’ve been 2nd on the Braves in stolen bases. He stole 9 bases for the White sox and he can’t even run anymore.

We signed Lowe for 4/$60m. Phils signed Halladay for 4/$80m. No disrespect to Lowe, or Werth. But you get what you pay for. Halladay threw 9 CG, 250 innings, and had a WHIP of 1. Crawford in CF will be worth more than Worth in CF, and it’s really the only move we have to make other than pick up A Gon, Diaz and either Hinske or Lee to help cover Freeman. We have starting pitching, we have a bullpen, and we have 2 more arms on the way in Teheran and Vizcaino.

Way too many holes in DOB’s article. Every now and then I’d like to see a little ‘tude in the reporting and questioning.
1. They’re counting on Chipper to be healthy? In what year, 1999? — curtis jones
I’d offer to explain the difference between a beat reporter and columnist, how a “little ‘tude in the reporting” isn’t really appropriate when someone is reporting news. But you’re in that group that can’t or simply doesn’t want to acknowledge that difference, or to understand that the world of journalism isn’t all blogs and editorializing.
Whether Curtis Jones or David O’Brien believes Chipper will be healthy is entirely beside the point, Curtis. Because what I told you is that the Braves are operating under the assumption that Chipper will be healthy, because they don’t have much choice — he’s planning to come back, his rehab is reportedly on schedule, and they’re going to have to pay him $28 mill over the next two seasons if he’s not on the DL or retired. They’re not going to pay him that and have him sit on the bench.
If he pulls the plug on it and retires, that’s another thing entirely. Then they could make a move to get another third baseman. But I don’t see how they could or would get another third baseman until then. They’ve already got Prado and Infante, either of whom could play the position if adjustments have to be made late.
Again, what you or I or any other fan thinks about the situation is irrelevant in a news story where I’m simply telling you what the team is doing, how they’re planning, according to the GM. If you don’t want to hear what he has to say about those plans, well, don’t read it. But I wasn’t writing a column suggesting the Braves do this or that. It was a story about what they say they’re doing, not what I or you or anyone else thinks they should be doing.

I think its great to hear what the Braves want and what they think they can get blah blah blah…the Braves however will sit on the sidelines as they usually do and watch players like a Crawford, Dunn and any other potential free agents sign with other teams waiting for the dollar amount on that particular player to decline or come down FACT; Liberty Media is CHEAP and they do not care about the Braves organzation…Until Arthur Blank can buy the Braves or someone that cares about winning…the Braves aren’t going to have financial support.

DOB, you a fan of Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan? I just got a ticket to see them in Brooklyn on Sunday with my wife and brother-in-law. Dob,
1 Have you heard that liberty media plans to sell the team? If that happens is there any chance it sells in time for the new owner to spend on free agents.
2. Even if chipper returns the braves have got to find someone who can take over at third when hoss does hang them up. They also need fo figure out if Mycal jones will be ready to take over for Alex after next year.
3. Any idea what fredi thought about Jeremy Hermida. He was just released and might be a nice cheap option for the outfield next year.
4. Regarding trading jj, I think much depends on how long wren thinks it will take Julio Teheran to make it to Atlanta (Delgado too). I suspect that you won’t see a trade like that until they are sure that they can replace jj. I doubt they think beachy is a long term solution for a rotation spot.

Reality Check!!! If the Yankees want Crawford, the Yankees WILL GET CRAWFORD no matter how much the braves offer, the Yankees can (and will) top it, plus its more attractive for him to go to the team with the best chance at a World Series, and with the team they field year in and year out, that is the yankees.
We all want a power bat but you have to be realistic.

Easy solution for LF. Buy low on Brad Hawpe. Give him a Troy Glaus type contract that is incentive based. When healthy he bats at least .280 will hit 20 HR’s and drive in 80 runs on more. Plus he is only 31.
Just saying...

“I think Alex will be what he’s always been. He’ll be somewhere between .260-.270, hit 15-20 home runs, drive in 70, 75, 80, and play really good shortstop.”
Alex did not perform offensively which you can make excuses for. Say he tried to do too much, blah, blah, blah…but he didn’t perform his strength, defensively! And did anyone see him not run out the crucial at bat in the final game when the shortstop muffed his ball…even the man from 1st made it to 2nd. His range is terrible and lack of hustle is unforgiveable. We need to upgrade at SS.
We need to acquire either Werth or Crawford (I would prefer Werth). If McLouth works hard with the new hitting coach, gets away from his upward swing for the fences, and continues to have the attitude and work ethic he had in August, he may be alright.
Heyward has great potential and should improve greatly…but has got to quit looking at called 3rd strikes, and needs to improve defensively. Yes, defensively. He has trouble playing the warning track and the wall; his inability to break on Huff’s soft liner on Sunday night probably cost us the series. I know I am the lone wolf on the last points, because the Braves so much want him to be the new golden boy (and I, also, wish him great success in Atlanta and a long career), but I don’t think he is there yet (at his age he can develop if he remains hungry).
Get off some of that money and get a productive outfielder without giving up JJ or a prospect. I have never seen a single team that had too much good pitching.

I would love Crawford, but you know that his price is going to get driven up because there’s basically him and Werth in this FA pool. Braves aren’t exactly big-spenders anymore either, so I don’t won’t to overpay for a guy like this and cripple the team’s finances for 5-7 years (not that it wouldn’t be awesome to have Crawford and Heyward in out OF)
If the Braves weren’t in so dire need of a RH bat, I’d suggest trading for Shin-Soo Choo. He’s explicitly stated interest in playing for a contending team (not Cleveland) and he hits for a great average (~.300), great OBP (~.400), and is a 20 steal/20 homer guy. Could prob stick him in LF and not have to worry about the spot being an offensive and defensive black hole. Just spit-balling and he’s a guy I haven’t heard suggested, but totally wouldn’t mind getting (and could be had for a reasonable price)

“Just saying” at 1:52…you took the words right out of me. Another of the great untold stories of the 2010 Braves was Heyward’s poor outfield play. The hype machine told us how great he was. Can anyone recall a memorable play? Other than the oft-repeated line, “Heyward’s throw to the plate is off-line…”
Out of all the subpar outfielders the Braves sent out there this year, only Ankiel was above average…and he was only that; above average. Hinske has no range, and no arm. Diaz is average at best. He made one great throw this year (most were rainbows), and then got pulled for the incredibly awful Melky Cabrera. To think that Melky once roamed the outfield for the Yankees, is as weird as the fact that McLouth won a Gold Glove one year. Evidently they had a drawing for the winner that year.
An earlier comment was on the money. The Braves have had few quality outfielders since Andruw Jones was in his prime….and the HOF trio of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz should absolutely thank him when they’re giving their speeches in Cooperstown.

It amazes me how many people will entertain trading JJ but will balk at considering putting McCann on the table. All I’m saying is this:
Payroll’s not going to get alot better, and little flexibility with Lowe, Jones, McClouth, and KK
Braves need more than just one more bat (and we don’t have a great 1-4)
Braves were defensively one of the worst teams in the NL
So to me, I’d rather have two more everyday bats w/pop and a solid defensive team than a talented catcher. That’s all I’m saying. Heresy, mabe. “Not gonna happen” – you’re probably right. And certainly not the only idea out there. But everyone knows we not going to grow the payroll to $120-150M. And I’m not too excited about the single addition of a middle-of-the-road OF. If that’s the case, let’s skip 2011 and play two 2012’s (when Chipper’s off the payroll) .

Trade McCann, KK & McClouth to Dodgers for Kemp. I know Kemp could be a problem. Trade JJ to Cardinals for Rasmus. You could’t beat an OF of Kemp, Rasmus & Heyward. That would be a great defensive OF. Catchers are dime a dozen. Find a good lefthanded catcher to go with Ross.

I would release McCloth if it cost me 25 mil, I would release Kawakami if it cost even more. To me, you loose all credibility when you suggest keeping the bum. I believe with all my heart he cost the braves untold games with his lack of hitting. All the games Kamakami lost, how much was that worth. You know if you need a center fielder or a left fielder find them where the Braves found Heyworth and Freeman. Quit giving away the future with all the freaking trades. 3 months of Texiera for a freaking team. And dang, closer to now, who the heck traded for Ankiel and Farnsworth, and at what price. And one last thing. How much has it cost the Braves because Booby Cox evidently didnt care if players were hurt. We could go on till tomorrow. In addition to all else had a star in center, a freaking star. Before the 3rd game he broke his hand, played 3 months, Bobby saying, bum cant play hurt, and now where is the guy? Hey everybody Omar can’t play the outfield. He’s had one year where he hit for average. He doesn’t have enough power for us to stick in left field over a bat like Braun. We need two bats not one. One of our weaknesses is that McCann is the cleanup hitter. You can’t have your cleanup hitter sitting every 5 days. It decimates your lineup. We need Braun and Zimmermann. We have the chips to trade for both. Lowe can be a piece in one of those deals. Remember Prado was our leadoff hitter when we got hot. Look at this lineup Prado, Heyward, Zimm, Braun, McCann, Gonzo, Freddie, and McLouth (assuming we can’t dump him). McLouth’s problem defensively is that he simply can not throw. He can cover ground but I don’t remember him throwing anyone out in 2010. There were plays where he didn’t even make a throw. I can’t look at Melky, Matty, or Ankiel anymore. Melky is the worst crap I’ve ever seen. A couple of years ago, he was leading off for the Yanks and seemed to be decent. I think the Braves became obsessed with him and were thrilled to have the chance to get him in the Vasquez deal. Hopefully, the Braves have seen enough to know that he is a bust.

This is the state of our team. We have to trade JJ for a mediocre bat. We have no other choice. The owners will not put up the money for a top-tier player. The Phillies will sign a top tier free agent to replace Werth, or they’ll re-sign Werth. Crawford will go to Yanks or Mets. And we will settle for trading JJ for Rasmus because that’s all we can do. We can’t get better. All we can do is tread water. That’s the reality of this team’s budget. We need power and speed, and we won’t get either.

I seem to have missed the name of Infante in DOB’s article. All the little guy did was carry the otherwise comatose offense (with Prado until he went down). IF Chipper comes back and seals his claim to the 3B position (but not necessarily to the 3-spot in the batting order?), we are going to need serious, everready backup for him. Also, I am not so convinced as every one seems to be that Freeman is really ready for the big time on a daily basis. If Lee goes (I had no big problem with him; check stats), and Glaus disappears from the radar screen, another serious backup is needed at 1B. The bench saved what was saved of the Braves’ season this year. Don’t make the mistake of selling all that off for one big (?) bat. And don’t give away the pitching: all those fabled division crowns, it was pitching, not slugging that did it.

Dromio94: Why are you and others here so surprised that I didn’t mention Infante in the article? The article wasn’t a complete rundown of everyone that’s going to be on the team, but rather a story that points out what the Braves’ priority is — to get an outfielder — and how they can focus on that because the infield and pitching staff are largely set. You saw the quote from Wren, where he said that infield — Freeman, Prado, Gonzalez, Chipper — is the one they hope to have. So where was I supposed to put Infante in that mix? I didn’t list the backups, nor did I list him as a starting outfielder, since the Brave have Heyward in RF and McLouth presumably playing either LF or CF. But obviously if McLouth stinks again, they’re going to have to play someone else there.
Infante’s been a standout backup on this team, and performed splendidly when given a chance to play every day this season, at least until September when he tailed off. But his big strength is still his versatility, and there are worse things than the Braves going into the season not knowing where he’s going to play, but certainly knowing he will play plenty, either as a backup at a variety of positions, or as a regular in the event that they have an injury, or if Chipper’s not ready, or perhaps if they can’t fill one of those outfield spots.

No one is saying pitching isn’t paramount to winning. The only reason this team did ANYTHING this year is because of pitching.
But look at the garbage on this roster. The defense is deplorable.
It’s a miracle that they managed to score runs after the all star break at all.
THEY HAVE to get 2 starting outfielders this offseason. They HAVE to find another 3rd baseman somewhere and they have to decide if Infante will play short next season or come off the bench. If that happens they need to replace Gonzo because he doesn’t have the power they thought and he doesn’t hit for average… and he’s a fairly poor short stop too. His defense was awful.

In my opinion, it’s going to be nearly impossible to find a right-handed power bat to play outfield and the Braves are going to be lefty heavy regardless of what they do. My suggestion would be to take a flyer on a speedster to hit leadoff. Don’t know who might be available for that role, but this teams need to produce more runs. If you can’t do it with power, then do it with speed. I bet Rickey Henderson is still in shape.

Well, there you go. The MVP of this year’s “playoff” team isn’t even assured a spot in the lineup in 2011.
Instead, Wren intends to trot out an unproven 1st baseman, a pouting, no-contact, error-prone shortstop, a feeble 3rd baseman who may be good for 40 games, a black hole in left field, an albatross in center, Jason “his throw was off-line” Heyward in right, and the poor fielding, 75 RBI cleanup hitting catcher.
That’s where it stands folks, trades must be made.

Let’s face the plain truth.
Regardless of who the new manager is, the Braves probably are not going to be competitive next season or perhaps for several years to come:
(1) In reality, the Braves have only THREE established, healthy, major league quality regular position players – Catcher, Right Field, and Second Base. And even this assumes that Prado will be able to bounce back from his injury and play second – And of course, the right fielder is a second year player who is not yet a proven veteran player.
(2) The Braves should have been looking forward to a bright future with a Star young Pitching Staff. But instead, Bobby Cox is leaving them with two of their young Star Starting Pitchers INJURED. Medlin is out at least for all of next season, and JJ has only been a shadow of what he was in his first year since his SHOULDER injury (the knee is only a minor concern). Neither of them may possible ever come back and be effective. With Bobby Cox keeping McDowell on as Pitching Coach in spite of his terrrible record of continued multiple pitcher injuries every year since he has been here, we now have the two injured YOUNG pitchers and our pitchng staff may be desimated for years to come. (Granted, there is no way to prove all or even any of all these pither injures are McDowells fault, it does not speak well of his conditioning program or overall handeling of the pitching staff. Cox should have at least tried someone else.
(3) The Braves should have a young potential All Star Shortstop and big bat in the middle of their order for years to come in Escbar. But because Bobby Cox could not/would not manage him (his hands off, make no demands of players approach did not work with Escobar), we traded him/game him away. His is huge in impacting the future of the Braves.
(4) There is little or no money for making improvements because a significat, huge part of the budget is already obligated to players who are not going to be or may not be productive – Chippper, McLouth, Melky, Kawakmi, and even Lowe if being a year older he is not productive.

Infante played very well this year and has played well since joing the Braves averaging over .300 with the bat but is no more than OK with the glove….. I think his versatility and offense are his value…… like him as the top option and a must with Chipper.
Chipper was a great player, now below avg and his salary hurts the Braves….. I know we can blame Lowes, KK, McClouth but we had needs to fill with each of those…… Chipper had a great year, with no power and got a super extension….. Chipper needs to negotiate his retirement….. He can always Farve it……. If Chipper cares about winning CARL Crawford in LF and a trade for Matt Kemp (yeah I dreaming) would allow us to play the weak infield that we have now…….. We must only hope the mets and Phillies steer clear of Crawford
I keep hearing people talk about how great Chipper is…… where are his endorsements?
Freeman and Heyward will probably play well…… Heyward, like Howard did not look great defensively as a rookie but he has got two years to learn on the job…. He looked better than Matt or Melky….
WE will put a poor performing team on the field, no minor leauge help and struggle to make the playoffs….. Pray our pitchers hold up……. Chipper man up Braves/Liberty Media give it up

Gonzalez can be a backup and pitch hitter along with Conrad.
Trade bait? David Ross deserves a shot to be a starting catcher in the big leagues. He was arguably the top backup catcher in MLB last season.
He hit .289 in the 59 games he played. And the pitchers said they loved his catching.

You would consider trading DLowe basically because he and Chipper make up roughly 1/3 of our annual payroll. As FW said, “We have to be creative”.
Last year, everyone wanted to dump DLowe. Now, he has an outstandnig month and he is untouchable. $15 Million/year (total of $30M) for a pitcher like DLowe is well within his market value – try to get one as a free agent for less (15+ wins & 200 innings). A healthy JJ replaces DLowe in the rotation. We have capable 4 & 5 starters.
We need the $15 million to fill holes.
Red Sox missed the playoffs – call them first.
Also, I think the length of Carl Crawford’s contract will be more of a hurdle than the annual dollars.
Those dollars will be huge but we don’t need a 10 year contract at $17 Million/Year.

Hoosier Aaron has it right…
D Lowe market value will never be higher… even if it just brings in a prospect or two (but have to imagine with the good end of season and decent year overall he could bring more), it more importantly knocks $15 mil off the books to go get a power bat…
JJ is who we want in the rotation – more steady and not financially debilitating…

There are a lot of good outfielders available, there are only two (maybe one – not so sure about Werth outside Philly) VERY good outfielders available. Going from lousy to just good would be a large upgrade which should transfer into a few more victories. Also, I wish I shared Wren’s optimism about the shortstop position. Don’s point three above is well taken.

Reason why Yankees rule and Braves suck: advanced scouts (scouting reports). Getting all the star players in the world won’t help the Braves. Their services are useless if they are lazy and go along with management not using scouting reports. Prado might be the hardest working player on the Braves but majority of the Braves are lazy and lucky due to hunches/gut feelings that paid off until the end. So, Braves go ahead and get a Manny Ramirez type player and you will be sorry. Might as well build organization around Escobar. Lack of utilization of scouting reports is the reason why teams like Washington whooped the Braves. Laziness of going out and partying instead of working on fundamentals is why the Braves were among the league losers in defense.

Chris Resop was misused as a reliever and It probably contributed to his injury . He could have been a spot starter but Braves neglected to see his success as a starter in AAA. Chipper is not going to just go away. He could be induced to forego some salary in interest of hiring Crawford or Werth. Ask him. I am. Chipper, would you please accept a salary commiserate with your value, say $7-8 mil? That’s still quite a hefty salary for your contributions at this stage of your career.
Other opinions: let McClouth go; let KK go; let Gonzo go (chant, Let Gonzo Go! Let Gonzo Go!) These “players” have been terrible. Let’s just call it a loss and move forward.
Don’t resign Lee, he was terrible also. Ditto for Ankiel.
Where the heck does Infante play. Although I have lobbied since Chpper went down for Infante to be everyday LF, it doesn’t appear Braves management agrees. So if I’m Omar, I’m asking,”Where do you play me? If not everyday, after the year I had, please trade me.” Omar deserves to be everyday as much as anyone, more so than Heyward and Freeman.
I don’t like moving guys all around, especially in IF. So put Prado on 2B and leave him there. Chipper at 3B and find a young talent (Alvarez-like) to groom there and fill in for the injured CJ. Put Infante in LF and leave him there. Find right-handed power hitting 1B not-Lee to back up Freeman. Hire best CF. And there you have a contender to fight Phils. C’mon Wren. This is do-able. Trade Jurrgens if you have to. Or even Hanson. Braves have enough pitching to contend already.
In Spring, Braves must work on fundamentals: defense, moving runners, baserunning, and defense. And they need to work on improving defense.

Why do Braves fans think we should increase the payroll ?
How about FIRE WREN.
The current Texas Ranger payroll is less than $56 million…and they are a dominating team.
The Tampa Bay team that went to the World Series, and the Florida Marlin Teams, that won it all were not big payroll teams….BUT they were teams they were put together correctly.
Gonzalez was an upgrade at SS ?
Melky was worth what ? And Nate, or KK, what are they worth ?
Wren is not doing a good job, and so there we have it……. also Chipper should take a pay cut…..or pro rate his salary for the amount of games played.

1. Let’s hope Fredi is more of a stickler for fitness than was the HOF manager. McCann, Moylan, Jurrjens, Glaus, Hinske and Diaz…to name a few, all seemed out of shape, and actually gained weight (not muscle) during the season.
2. McLouth in CF in 2011? Oh. My. God. How many balls are gonna fall in right center because he’s having flashbacks of colliding with Heyward. Those two won’t get near each other. File this under “seriously bad ideas.”
3. What has happened to Hinske’s versatility? How can a guy who played 427 games at 3rd base from 2002-04, and 49 games in right field in 2008 suddenly be unqualified to play an inning at either position?

Obviously the team the Braves have is competitive…they did make the playoffs and aren’t losing anyone. Adding an outfielder is not going to get them to the WS…so don’t let go of the young talent we have.
I think this is the way to go. The days when the Braves pitching could carry them is over. The Braves have good pitching now not great as in the past. Resign yourself that they will probably not win the division next year but can be competitive with the idea that you continue to develope players in the minor leagues that may be able to takeover at 3rd base and LF(Winton Ramirez). Trade for a decent CF who has speed and a litle pop over the Winter.

the braves need to do multiple things:
1. trade Lowe high – a 37 year old with a 4.00 era isnt worth 15 million a year. he pitched well at the end of the year, so selling high is a viable option
2. carl crawford is completely out of the question. there is just no way the braves will sign him, so you might as well stop talking about it. jayson werth is also most likely out of the question, but is a bit more of a realistic option. the braves need to invest in a young outfielder who will be with the team for years to come. if they can piece something together for colby rasmus (maybe jurrjens and a prospect), that would easily be their best option and a game changer as he is only 24 and will only get better.
3. if the braves do want to spend money in the offseason chipper has to retire. his contract is absolutely ridiculous. he will get paid 14 million next year to hit .260 with 12 homers and 50 RBI. that contract is just killing us.
4. hanson is our ace of the future. we don’t need to trade for an ace or sign one (not that we could even do that anyways given our budget) because tommy will be one of the best pitchers in the NL within the next couple of years. anyone who thinks we have a chance at getting felix hernandez or signing cliff lee doesn’t know anything about baseball.
5. the braves have to acquire some sort of above average infielder because prado and infante will not have years like they had this year ever again and we can’t count on them to.
what the braves will actually do: get another middle of the road outfielder who will contribute nothing special to the team (cody ross) and call it a key acquisition. then they will make a couple of other insignificant moves and expect to have a team that can compete in the playoffs. the current team has way too many holes, and will have to give up some good pitching in order to fill them

“Adding an outfielder is not going to get them to the WS”
Depends. In my mind, Braves would still be playing if they had Holliday in left field. The Phillies are a roadblock right now, but they might not be as formidable next year. Many key players on the Braves are a year older and slower next season – that is a big concern, too.

The problem with the Braves this last season was that they had about 5-6 marginal guys playing the same position that Bobby subbed in and out, and these guys each got paid a couple of mill.
We should just play Infante in left (if Chipper must come back) and focus on signing a very good CF for the money we’d otherwise give to 3-4 guys. Get some cheap depth through the minors or elsewhere.

First of all, I agree Infante has shown he is a regular. But he doesn’t have a position… what Wren/Fredi should do is announce to the media that Omar WILL play SOMEWHERE nearly every game, good for at least 400-500 ABs… That would work. They’d just need to rotate, play Chipper and Martin about 5 games per week to keep them healthy as much as anything else; there’s 4 starts combined for Omar. Throw him out in the OF once or twice week, too…
If they think he’s going to appreciate gettin 200-250 ABs again, like in the past, he won’t. . Reward the guy for once, all he gets is a bad rap (happened here in Detroit, too).
Meanwhile, speaking of the Tigers, sign Magglio to play left (again maybe 5 games a week). Magglio was a close friend of Omar’s during the latter’s Detroit career and Maggs also (since he is Venezuelan) would connect very well with Prado. Excellent for team chemistry. Sign Ordonez for maybe $7-8 mil. Oh yeah, the Bravos should extend Omar to 2012 right now.

nique: Brooks Conrad is the definition of “cheap depth”. Might look good sitting on the bench or in spots, but not quality depth when you need him to step up. Infante, Ross, that is quality depth, and they are worth the extra bucks. Diaz was, and might still be. Hinske faded back to the bench, but his bat is extremely valuable. Braves will need to take a flyer on some new faces for the back end of the bench, and it will be interesting to see how they fare. Middle infield should be interesting to watch, and we can only hope for new faces in the outfield.

I think the Braves and Rangers match up great for a JJ/Cruz swap. Braves need offensive help, the Rangers will need pitching help after Lee leaves. Both players are young and cheap. Both have a slight history of injuries, but are very good when healthy.
Then I’d try to sign Javy (or a similar type pitcher; 1-2 year contract) to fill the #4 spot.

If they would take the risk, Crawford is attainable. If we don’t pick up any more bad middle of the road contracts. McLouth and KK are $6m each, but that is $12m together. Do not trade any pitchers. Get Chipper to commit to retiring after 2011. We owe him 2011. He owes us stepping aside in 2012. So, right there, in 2012, we’d have $30m off the books. Our bullpen is pretty cheap with Kimbrel, Venters, Dunn being so young. We have 4 solid starters and 2 options vying for #5. Resign Hinske to cover 1b and LF. Let Diaz and Lee and Melk Dud go. Force McLouth to play at even a .250 clip. Use roids if you have too. Don’t trade pitching. Don’t do it.

Forget Crawford because he only hits around 20 HRs a year. I don’t know who will be available through free agency but we need a big banger that can hit 30 plus. Ah, great to see that the offseason has arrived and all of the rocking chair GM wannabees are out in full force. Do the Braves have some needs? Of course: offense, speed and improved defense among them. But some of the posts here are simply idiotic. My personal favorite is trade Kimbrel (a 22 year old who has dominant closer written all over him), Vizcaino (a 20 year old very promising pithcing prospect) and Infante (an Allstar super sub) for Colby Rasmus (I guess I must have missed when he became transformed from a good player into the second coming of Willie Mays).
We all can whine about how cheap Liberty Media is ad infinitum, but that ain’t gonna change. Wren has to operate within a budget and, while I haven’t agreed with all of his moves, the bottom line is that in two years, he transformed the team from one that had the 7th worse record in baseball to the playoffs. Maybe, just maybe, he deserves a little credit for that!

Sign Hinske and Infante and I guess A Gon since he’s pretty cheap all told. Hey, Yunel, go skrew yourself for forcing us to have to make that trade since you were such a punk.

Not to bash Frenchy, but he did well for us until the pitchers made adjustments and he did not.
Now, AL pitchers are getting to see him basically for the first time. Based on history, if they make similar adjustments to NL pitchers – he probably won’t (again).
I’m just glad he turned down the same offer that BMac accepted. We’d still be stuck if he wasn’t a little bit greedy.
All that being said, I hope he goes on to a Hall of Fame career…..in the AL.

I don’t know if anyone has thrown it out there but what do you all think of signing Andruw Jones to a minimum contract with incentives? His numbers are pretty much identical to Carlos Pena’s with the only concern being his defense. If he drops more weight, I could see him being an average LFer at best which is more than we need. Other issue would be the ballpark as it’s not hitter friendly so his production might drop a little but signing him with no expectations is worth it for a former Atlanta great.

DawgDad – you’re right Conrad is a perfect example of cheap depth – we paid the guy what $400K and he pinch hit and played a valuable role on the team. The guy single handedly won us how many games? Granted he looked horrible at the end, but I’d much rather spend money on a good player who will start for us every game he’s healthy and have a guy like Conrad on the bench and come in occasionally when needed than have Melky, Diaz, Hinske, McLouth and Ankiel all rotating between positions -that’s a lot of money between all those guys.

Same deal with Glaus and Hinske – they could’ve and should’ve signed LaRoche and had him start all season rather than paying 2 guys to play until Lee got here.
BTW, I think Hinske is great and definitely want him back but we don’t need 4 guys of the same caliber as him on the bench unless we plan to continue to sign re-tread over the hill types who we hope will some how rejuvenate their careers in ATL just because.

Pretty much all the good players that were put on the waiver wire,Braves failed to do anything about. They wouldn’t get Adam Dunn. They wouldn’t get Ted Lilly. They didn’t get Cody Ross and it was the nail in their coffin. They just sat back and looked to blame their failure on their injuries. They had a first baseman that was playing injured and could only put up Casey Kotchman numbers. They refused other players playing time because of contract incentives. This all looks Pete Rosey if you ask me. Braves are bound to fail because of those with power see it fit for them to do so.

For those complaining about Alex Gonzalez, consider this: How many other shortstops can you find me that play good (if not great defense) while hitting 23 home runs and driving in 88 runs who are only making 2.5 million dollars. Simply put, the Braves have a bargain at a premium defensive position for next year, assuming Alex is able to repeat his numbers.
If you assume that Nate will be in CF, the Braves only have one opening, and that is in left field. I do not think Wren will feel comfortable trading Lowe or JJ until he is sure that Teheran and/or Delgado are ready to make the jump. Wren learned this year that what once looks like a surplus of starting pitching can evaporate very very quickly. This means you have find a left fielder before the season begins.
I think the Braves ought to see what the Cardinals and Dodgers want for Rasmus and Kemp respectively. Both have had very public problems with the organizations. We all know what this can mean for a player, as we saw Yunel get traded for these reasons.
I wonder if the Cardinals would trade Rasmus for Prado and maybe a middle level prospect. The Cardinals need middle infield help, and if the Braves think that Infante can play second every day, it might be a good time to sell high on Martin. Martin will be getting a substantial raise next season via arbitration. The Dodgers need all sorts of help, and maybe they would sell low on Kemp.
I also wonder if the Braves would consider bringing Andruw back on a low, incentive based contract. You can say what you want to about Andruw, but his power would have been a welcome addition in left field this year.
You could also sign a guy like Jeremy Hermida, who is only 27, as insurance. I wonder if how he and Fredi got along during their time in Florida together.

.Don(key) – You are doing a bit right? The Braves only have three major league quality players? The three you mentioned are all stars. Alex Gonzalez was second in MLB for HRs by shortstops. Freddie Freeman dominated AAA. Omar Infante was third in the league in hitting. McClouth and Chipper are all stars looking to come back from injuries. Don’t let facts get in the way of your posts though. These are all trash players according to you. What team has a superstar at every position? I’m sure your xbox team is great and all, but this is reality.
…and Lowe not productive? Even without the 31 wins in two years he more than proved himself again in the playoffs. Again, don’t let facts get in the way.

Clicked on the Keith Richards/Mick Jagger story on “The Buzz” on the ajc.com front page. Hardly ever click there, but this was the Stones.
So Keith Richards gave up drugs four years ago after falling from a tree in Fiji and needing brain surgery. I guess maybe turning 63 wasn’t enough to convince him to give up drugs.
And though he calls Jagger “unbearable” (really? a rock n roll prima donna front man “unbearable”? Next, you’ll hear Eddie Van Halen saying David Lee Roth likes being the center of attention. And did you know Jerome Bettis played the Super Bowl in his hometown? But I digress…) they’re thinking about another Stones tour.
Please. God. No.
I love the Stones. The show I saw with them and Living Colour as the opening act is still hands down the best rock n roll concert I’ve ever been to.
But come on guys … even Gordie Howe retired. Even Gaylord Perry walked away. Even Brett Favre hung it … no, wait, he hung something else.

I can not believe that anyone can seriously think of adding Andrew Jones to the Braves.
coupled with Gonzalez, the duo might just set a record for the number of strike outs in the clutch.
I like Gonzalez’ defense a lot but I think that the Wren is totally wrong about his offense. Lets not forget about how many (ugly) strike outs Alex had and especially k’s with men in scoreing position.
I say its ok to keep Gonzalez as long as the rest of the offense can pick him up and then he can add whatever he can to the offense.
To have Gonzalez and Andrew in the same lineup would be the choke pair of all of baseball.

“Nate McLouth will be back because he’s owed a $6.5 million salary in 2011, plus a $1.25 million buyout of a $10.65 million option.
But the Braves need to add at least one productive outfielder after getting little offense in center and left most nights from the combination of Melky Cabrera, McLouth, Matt Diaz and Rick Ankiel”.
Wow, just reading that is discouraging. In my view, not one of those players brings anything to the table and further, not one of them should be on the roster next year. If they really want to improve this team, as you correctly point at the beginning of the blog, they need to improve this “punchless” outfield; doing so in my opinion means replacing all the aforementioned stiffs while retaining the only real Major League quality player, Heyward.

Atlanta needs a top caliber outfielder . That is where Andrew Jones have proven the test of time . He has the best gold glove . He made catches that no one could make . He has done it all . But he got worse batting the last few years . so now people will say ..He would not help . Lets not forget how good he was . 50 home runs in 1 year . All those game saving base hit catches that he made outs with . He helped save a lot of runs . He would help the team 100% in his own way

hitting 50 hrs is what finished andruw off as a superstar. talk about a downward spiral. if tp had a few more years with him, andruw would actually be worse than mcclouth. andruw stopped hitting in sept of that year and never started back. hopefully tp finds his niche as a 1st base coach. he’s a quality baseball guy, just not a hitting coach

Also if you really want a team that can win games then you need a proven hitter . Someone that can get that extra run or that game saving catch . That is where the Andrew Jones formulation comes in to effect . If you bring him back there is the great outfielder and great hitter . Its all about how to push the effect

Do you not think maybe he had bad years for a normal reason ? Maybe it was hit time to have those bad years . I mean even the greats have had down falls in hits over the years. I think I have figured out the backstory on KK. Read between the lines on this quote from Wren:
“I think we owe it to him and us to explore what possibilities are out there,” Wren said. “With the development of our young pitchers, it’s become difficult for us to project him in the rotation, and that’s really the best role for him. He very well might be back here. But I think we’ll at least explore alternatives for next year.”
I remember that KK said he was not able to pitch in relief. He’s very much a creature of habit, and thought of himself as ONLY a starter. When the Braves tried to get him to pitch in relief, he probably freaked out and became a head case about it.

What a great trade. Andrus doing great for the rangers tonight.
Surprisingly little has been made of Mark Teixeira facing his old team in the ALCS, perhaps because he had stints with the Braves and Angels in between going from the Rangers to the Yankees.
Selected by Texas with the fifth overall pick in the 2001 draft, Teixeira hit .283/.368/.533 with 153 homers and 499 RBIs in 693 games for the Rangers. In the middle of his fifth season in Texas he reportedly turned down an eight-year, $140 million extension offer, at which point the Rangers traded Teixeira to the Braves on July 31, 2007 for a five-prospect package that included Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Matt Harrison, and Beau Jones.
At the time Saltalamacchia was viewed as the centerpiece of the Rangers’ haul, while Feliz and Andrus were high-upside teenagers at Single-A. Four years later Feliz is one of the best closers in baseball and may win the Rookie of the Year award, Andrus is an elite defensive shortstop and the Rangers’ leadoff man …

The Braves will be ok,but as I said in a previous post,I wish Wren would not have let BC make those last trades(Escabor & Blanco),because I believe Freddie could have used them.I believe with those two at the top of the order, with Prado,I believe it would have been exciting around here next year.Hey,why not see what you can get for Huddy and Dunn. Most teams need a good starter and lefty in bull-pen.I like Hudson, but why trade youth when as The A’s did,get something before they end up like Lowe, ubtradable.I hope Freddie let Chipper know he is not Bobby Cox and although he is a potential HOF,his days of ease and calling his own shots are over.I believe training camp this year will be a lot different than those of Bobby. There will be more work on fundamentials than working on golf games.I believe Wren will get ample talent here as he has done in past, but I believe CFG will let this TEAM know in a hurry that it’s a new day.NO more favorites, but guys that earn it.I really hope Chipper has one more year in him and we get Mac some help in the middle of the order so he don’t think he has to carry this TEAM.I for 1(one) wish we could work out a deal with D.Lee.I think,if healthy,he is what we need.I believe Freddie is athletic enough to play LF. I saw Yogi and Elston Howard do it and also Hinke,McLough, and Diaz. How hard could it be for a young man with skills like I believe he has to give it a shot? With a healthy and hopeful motivated Chipper, and Lee in the middle of the lineup with Mac and Heyward,Ibelieve we could score some runs and keep our pitching staff in order.Imagine a line-up of Prado,Chipper,Lee,Mac,Heyward,Gonzo,Freeman,McLough(?)and pitcher.I think that would be interesting.Just saying! JJ… I agree..We don’t have to sell the farm. This group of guys need a rest, a conditioning prograam and possibly a base stealing lead off man. If Lee gets healthy, Chipper becomes the HOF’er he is, Freeman has a great year, Jason continues to improve, Mac has his vision restored and McLough finds himself. we will have a team. Little late getting in on this one but here you go. Crawford will not be in Atl. For those of you that don’t follow baseball and suggest he be the lead off hitter he does not produce in that spot in the order. He is a 2 or 3. He will also require a 20-25 mil a tear contract and probably demand an outragous number of years. So if he were signed, and the Braves are required to work within a budget, what room will they have to fill other needs in the near future? Gonzo after ‘11. JJ and Prado salary arbitration. Huddy, Lowe, Chipper after ‘12? So 1/4 of the budgeted payroll will be tied up with one player. That would make real good sense.
On Gonzo, let him walk and take the draft pick. He may not be an A but should be a B. We need some solid draft picks that can advance quickly.Sell high. He has injury issues and had a career year. Won’t be the same in ‘11. Our best trade bait in Infante. Again, sell high. Last year of his contract, will still be a roll player for the Braves next year, and he would be valuable in a trade. After reading some other teams needs TB will be trimmimg payroll. As I stated before, and was stated on MLB, Bartlett should be available and the Rays will need a LF. Possible Diaz for Bartlett? Good glove, speed, and a small ball guy. As far as the OF needs, one CF stands out. Chris Young. Sure his BA isn’t .300 and he will strike out but he has power, speed, and plays strong defense. His right handed bat would fit well between all of the lefties on this team. Could Lowe get traded? I’d sure try. I’d go with Beachy and Minor to start the season. If Tehran progresses like he did this year he may be in Atl by mid season. Only way I’d let JJ goe is if Boras gets out of control, which is possible. It’s a shame both of our studs are under his care.
Last trade thought, Ellsbury. He may be available. So view my lineup with this three additions. Well under budget. All three have speed, play good D, and young enough to keep around a few years.

same with Mc Louth and Melky…Wren is NOT a mind reader, went on the information he had at the time. He went with Ankeil and Farnsworth and that didn’t work out.(went on HOPE bad decision) Of course all of us have crystal balls and would have seen into the future and predicted all these scenerio’s and outcomes esspecially all the injuries. I still feel we are just missing a couple of pieces to the puzzle. We will be fine. Again, remember it is only a game and a lot of teams with much more payroll and better talent, sat out and didn’t get to the play off’s. Pitching prospects are much more valuable than hitting prospects. You always have alot of hitting options at the other 8 positions. We should trade off pitching only when we can’t afford someone or when skill starts to diminish. Kind of like what the New England Patriots do in football. Maybe Wren should talk to Demitroff. We are real close to being outstanding. I like Ellsbury too,low salary high upside and a leadoff hitter.

I wonder if Mycal Jones will end up as more of a Chone Figgins type. A leadoff guy that could play 2b, 3b or maybe CF. If that’s the case, he might be closer to the bigs than expected. Also, did the Braves hang on to Wilkin Ramirez and do you have any sense of whether he could be in the picture in the spring. His minor league career is sort of Nelson Cruz lite and we are due to catch a break with a guy like that. The Phils did with Werth, the Cards with Ludwick and there are other similar stories. Maybe he’ll be our cinderella story and we only have to get someone to put in the 4 hole.

TN Brave Fan – Your numbers are skewed, you included Lee, Farnsworth and Ankiel’s entire salary as coming off of the books when in fact the Braves only incurred a small portion of those salaries.
The Braves have already advised the budget for 2011 will be about the same as 2010 which was
$ 83 mil. The Braves have 3 players (Jones, Hudson and Lowe) that will make $ 38 mil next year leaving $ 45 mil for the rest of the roster. After you deduct McCann’s $ 6.5 mil, McLouth’s $ 6.5 mil, KK $ 6.5 mil, Gonzalez $ 2.5 mil, Infante’s $ 2.5 mil and Ross $ 1.5 mil that leaves $ 19 mil. JJ, Moylan and Prado are all arb eligible and will secure something like $ 2.5 mil each leaving $ 16.5 mil. You still have Conrad, Heyward, Venters, Hanson and EOF, they will be entitled to a raise over last years salary. Let’s say Conrad, Heyward, Venters and EOF each get $ .5 mil and Hanson gets 1.0 mil, you now have $ 13.5 mil to work with. This accounts for 17 positions leaving 8 more positions to fill. If you fill 7 of the positions with the minumum salary of $ 400,000, you would have $ 10.7 mil to obtain a quality OF.
Unless some changes are made there will not be sufficient funds to obtain Werth or Crawford. I think we are looking at Cody Ross or Pat Burrell. They are not fancy but better than what we had last year.

I don’t like it when Wren says he has to be creative. That means they don’t want to spend any money. That’s what they said when we traded Vasquez for Melky. Whenever they say “creative ” it’s another way of saying cheap it out. That means mediocre players with possible upside that don’t pan out. I’ve heard “creative” every year for a while now. Spend the money to compete or we’ll end up with a punch and judy offense again.

I don’t understand why we are spending half of what the Mets or Phillies are. When did we become a small market team? I know we can’t do $150 million, but why are we below teams like the Cardinals and Astros in payroll. The Braves are making it sound like their hands are tied with the OF situation, but it’s not. Just don’t be so cheap, and who knows if the team actually scored some runs, people might show up and watch.

The Braves need to do a better job with the draft. The farm teams have not been near as strong as in the past. Scouting is so important. Build through the draft and then add one or two impact type players. Also do a good job of trading for young talent (ex. John Smotz). The Braves have kind of neglected this and it has shown.

At the time of his fourth straight unprecendented at the time Cy Young sportswriters said they should stop giving him the award because it doesn’t even honor him, the award itself should be named the Greg Maddux award. We need to make up[side high school picks like Lipka last year. I look back at what the Angels got out of the picks for Tex and it makes me sad. Would be nice to have a guy like Trout coming up in the system right now. If you look at what has panned out for us the most over the last few years, it’s been high school kids. If Andrew Jones comes back to the Braves that would solve the outfield problem . He would catch anything and stop many base hits or ball base hits that should have been outs and was called hits . He also could have a breakout season . Chipper returns ..breakout season …And they could show the other guys how to grove the ball like old times . Andruw Jones will be a free agent after the World Series and he only signed for $500,000 this year, so he would probably come pretty cheap. Lets face it, a player with the defensive ability that Andruw still has with a batting average of .230 with 19 homers and 48 rbis in only 328 at bats while playing only half the time is a helluva lot better option than anything we saw last year. The team is not going to pay big money to get a proven star in here, so we have to settle for the next best option. If Jordan Schafer isn’t doing well by then, I would love to see Andruw back in a Braves uniform, especially without Pendleton screwing with his swing. A full season in center and Andruw would hit at least 25 homers and 85-90 rbis, even if he hits only .230 again. To me, that is a no-brainer.
And for those that are clamoring for Derrick Lee to be resigned, are you out of your ever loving minds? Freeman has nothing left to prove in the minors. He is a great defensive first baseman with a lot of upside offensively. Play him while he is making the minimum and allow him to grow into a bonafide major leaguer. Lee has had it and we’d have to pay him too much to sign him, even if he signs for only a few million.

Btw, Otis Nixon for hitting coach? Really? First of all, Nixon was a slap hitter with speed. What can he possibly impart to anyone that would benefit them? He had a lifetime batting average of .270. As a slap hitter with tons of speed, seems to me that he should have been closer to a .300 average, plus batting from the left side. Secondly, he isn’t even involved in baseball. He is studying to be a preacher. Thirdly, Nixon seeing a baseball diamond with those foul lines would make his nose start running cause he would want to snort them. Stop talking about Nixon. It can’t and won’t happen. You’d have a better chance of getting Ted Williams head to be a hitting coach.

I did not know that about Otis Nixon. well they could still get a few choices of a batting coach but it will be hard. If they can not get Otis . I would go after David Justice or fred mcgriff to be there batting coach. Those 2 players are on the same teams that otis played for so there part of the best of the best of the braves.

His Braves won went to the playoffs 15 times . He had 64 Brave players from 1990-2010 to make it to the All star team to play from the Braves . Under him the Atlanta Braves won the world series in 1995 . And Under him from 1991-1999 They went to the world series 5 times. The Braves was the Team of the 1990s . Having went to the world series more than any time and having won every title and having won 1 world series And he was the best ..But now its a new time ..but they have not been to the world series in 11 years

trade lowe + prospect to the yankees for brett gardner (LFer with great speed) and javy vasquez (pitches much better in the NL) then trade beachy and infante/another prospect for kemp (the dodgers want to get rid of him) If any team is willing to eat lowes contract it’s NY, and they’ll be in need of a pitcher especially after javy’s horrible season. I tried adding up the money and i don’t see this extending it much more than last years, especially if we can find a way to get rid of mclouth or kawkami (or both) but you gotta admit, this would be a pretty good roster lineup:
AVG HR RBI OBP SB
Brett Gardner .290 7 60 .390 48
Martin Prado .310 17 70 .355 05
Jason Heyward .304 29 104 .410 21
Chipper Jones .284 20 78 .428 05
Brian McCann .292 23 95 .395 04
Matt Kemp .290 28 101 .350 26
Alex Gonzalez .251 17 72 .300 03
Freddie Freeman .267 17 72 .332 02
ERA W-L IP SO / BB
Tim Hudson 3.33 17-6 211 133/71
Tommy Hanson 2.76 18-8 222 214/58

DOB,
Thanks for the blog. As a Braves fan it is required reading. Acknowledging the top guys like Werth and Crawford are probably not gonna be Braves’ options, who do you see them potentially targeting? Will they try the recycle bin again like they did with Glaus? What do you think are the odds Kawakami and Atl may reach an agreement to get him back to Japan if he can’t be traded?

I fail to understand why you are stuck wanting to have a hitting coach that just happens to be an ex-brave, especially with no experience as hitting instructors. That was Pendleton’s problem. He was hired to a position without knowing what would happen. If I were the Braves, I would try and rehire Don Baylor. Him or Chris Chambliss.

Having an ex-brave player as the hitting coach for the 2011 Atlanta Braves would bring experience of a guy who was part of a championship club and could be a hitting coach that understands big plays .
My own suggestions .
1. Otis Nixon < Fastest and best base stealing Brave
2. David Justice < Won world series with Braves . One of the best players ever!!! Hit 40 home runs 2 seasons < 7 time play offs < 2 world series
3. fred mcgriff < 10 seasons with 30 or more home runs .
having a hitting coach is good . But having someone with that kind of on base expercence that those 3 guys ive named . is un heard of . but im not the Atlanta braves . so I can not choose who gets to be the hitting coach . I just express my ideals .

Ab of the south- really andruw is done. He couldnt play everyday and we got plent of 250 hitters thst cant play everyday… He was one if ghe greatest to ever suit up as a brave. But really dude he aint what we need anymore… We need an every day player that can give us 25-30 homers and 100 rbis. Whether we can afford that is the question… It will be best served by other than AJ. His stardom is finished. Hes through. Ni longer in the braves needs or wants. Frank Wren said: ““I think Alex will be what he’s always been. He’ll be somewhere between .260-.270, hit 15-20 home runs, drive in 70, 75, 80, and play really good shortstop.”
=====================================================================\
Huh? I think 240 – 250 with very low OBP and 10 – 15 HR and 50 – 60 RBI with average defense will be more like it. In other words, Gonzalez will be a serviceable shortstop, while Escobar will likely be the 2nd shortstop the Braves have traded away since 2007 who will make the AL All Star team. A horrible trade, one that the Braves will be paying for for years to come, and all to placate a manager who had badgered Wren to trade Escobar because he didn’t like him, a manager who will no longer be here.

Well Braves have a manager; Thank goodness it was not T.P. boy what a flop
as a hiting coach; and F.G. keeps him for Hubbard ha,ha,ha:
The Don Baylor suggestion for help is a great idea; Love the F.G. deal; Freddie
name Baylor your bench coach, hitting, and tell T.O. coaching first is his job period! Remember his theory as hitting coach? Leave players along until ask for his help; does this mean that when they get to first they ask him when to go to next base or just use common sense yo use their little league knowledge to act on their on ability!
T.P. needed to be gone F. G. use a injured player (ir) to coach first!
another money savior to purchase a player to improve Braves scoring ability.
Thinking on the K.K….. Japan needs a good pitcher for semi-help! Can’t believe Braves gave a contract for him; would have thought Braves mhad signed Cy Young! Some one oe who ever pulled this boner needs to be out of baseball!

At times it would be great to go back to the days of “One-Year Contracts”. This would releive the excess baggage situations every team falls into.
At times, we see teams spend more time/effort getting rid of baggage rather then the effort needed to adding the final punch needed.

If you read Cot’s baseball contracts, you can see every contract of every player on the Braves and every other team. If you look at closely, we will take off the books the following: Wagner-7 mil; Saito-3 mil; Glaus- 2 mil; Diaz- 3 mil. That is 15 million available for a star outfielder that we desperately need without raising payroll. We can sign Jason Werth imo for 15 mil per year for 3 years to play CF. He will hit 4th or 5th, supply the right handed power we need, and take a key player away from the Phillies in the process. If Chipper retires, we have 13 million more to get Uggla to play 3rd or 2nd and move prado to 3rd, for 10-12 mil per year, and add additional RH power. Either way, we can have a strong line-up. Our total payroll without Werth , including Chipper and our obligations to McClouth and KK is 78 million. We can afford Werth and we need him. If we can trade KK or McClouth, and get rid of the 6.5 mil we owe each, we can pick up substantially more to improve our team.

Shin-Soo’s available and good no doubt but…..
another LEFT handed bat. That would be Freeman, McCann, Heyward and Choo as your middle of the order guys. Not something Wren’s gonna be interested in doing. We need a right handed Power outfielder- dream would be Kemp. Rasmus would be a great addition but i hope we don’t give up JJ for him. But lets sit back and enjoy the Phillies lose this week, then enjoy the World Series before these trade rumors take center stage

Have to question Wren’s judgment on trades — we should have held out for Cody Ross and got him before the trade deadline instead of getting Farworthless Ankiel. By the waiver date it was clear the Ankiel deal was not working out and they should have claimed Ross off waivers as the Giant’s did. We might still be playing. I have no confidence in Wren’s ability to provide for the near term future with trades or signings. Too many failures and/or mediocre results — Glaus, Ankiel, Cabrera, Lee. The one success he had – Wagner – only stayed 1 yr instead of 2.

Charles, the Braves had a better record than San Francisco when the Giants claimed Ross on waivers in mid-August. In fact, Braves had better record than anyone in NL except San Diego, at that time. The Giants claimed Ross in order to block the Padres from claiming him. Once the Giants claimed him, the Braves couldn’t have gotten Ross in a waiver trade, because they were behind them in the claiming order.

Dave, you must be out of your mind. I wouldn’t let Nate McLousy cleats ever touch fair territory. He’s worthless. How much proof do you need. As for the rest of the outfield, other than Heyward and Diaz you can eject the rest of them Cabrera can’t hit or field. What are you going to do with Glaus, another bust. He sure as hell can’t play first base and the rookie “phenom” has never shown that he is a phenom. Remember Laroche. That’s all that needs to be said. The Braves minor leagues are woefully short of line players. This is not a one year fix, it’s a five year fix. And Chipper, even if he plays, for how long–100 games; I doubt it!

J.J. and Nate for Kemp, Liberty needs to up payroll to at least 98 million or get out as attendance this year proved that the fans will buy tickets if the product on the field is worth going to the ball park, increase payroll to give us a chance at getting a good left fielder and this team can compete for a world series championship, be cheap and try and win with great pitching which a lot of teams now have and lose because you cannot score runs, fairly simple decision, as a fan if the Braves do not get some hitters I will not be going to any games at Turner and hope the rest of you fans do the same as if Liberty wants to be cheap then they will not be getting any of my money.

The payroll budget will not increase. It is nice to dream about big names but the contracts for McLouth & KK bring you right back to reality. I can see them essentially paying KK to not pitch if there are no buyers for his services, but they can’t afford to eat both contracts. A very realistic opening day roster could have Heyward in right, Schafer in center and McLouth in left. (yes all left handed bats). That would not be a bad scenario at all if Jordan & Nate can both return to form and be healthy. I would look for the Braves to add a veteran 32-35 year old left fielder on a one year deal near the end of spring training if either McLouth or Schafer have a bad spring. (If they both have a bad spring the Braves are in big trouble.) I’d like to see the Braves sign someone like a Andy Marte to play every 4th or 5th game and 3rd and spot start at 1st if Freeman struggles against lefties.
