C’mon Troy – just one night with those bad knees hoss, can you make it?? Want to see a shutdown 3rd base tonight OK? Nothing gets by you and for God’s sake, hit Derrick in the chest with the throws over OK?
C’mon now, you really don’t think Bobby was behind everything that was going on? Bet he was just behind where you can’t see in the dugout. NO WAY does he just give it over to Chino in such an important game.
Bobby made those calls, I’ll be your left arm on it.
If you had seen the monster home run that Heyward hit during batting practice, there’d probably be fewer questions about whether he’s hurt. The guy’s just slumping. He can still crush baseballs, at least in BP.
Wayne, just don’t ever say that to Johnny Venters unless you are absolutely sure you are correct. LOL. But on the subject of Bobby managing from the tunnel Friday, I’ll have to go with you on that one. Chino doesn’t put Glaus in at 3B without clearance from the tower.
Wayne – I highly doubt that Brooks Conrad works harder than 90 percent of Americans, I know that you tried to defend by saying he works hard. My point is so what? The vast majority of people work hard. You said that “Brooks Conrad is us, the blue pail worker.” No he’s not, he works six months out of the year unless he goes to winter ball for 2 months. Your falling into the trap that the media portrays about the minor league lifer. Most blue-collar workers give up on their dreams to provide for their families. I higly doubt that anyone on this blog is jealous of Brooks Conrad or his salary.
My heart sank last night, thought I’d never get to sleeep. Then I tried to put myself in Brooks’ place and I cannot begin to imagine what his team, family, and friends are going through with all that, and then think about Brooks the man.
I love you when you win – I love you when you lose. I love baseball because of players like Brooks Conrad.
Wayne in Utah– I think you have an amazing disregard for the American worker if you think MLB players work harder. American workers work 12 months a year, and if their lucky they might get a week or two of vacation. Workers have to go into work even if they’re sick or their back is killiing them because they have a wife and kids that depend on them.
Meanwhile, the average MLB player can take some time off if he has a sore thumb or the like and go on the DL and STILL get paid. He has a gauranteed contract.
That’s why Joe Fan loved Cal Ripken Jr. so much. Because he did what they have had to do all their lives. Ripken even played with a ruptured disc in his back—not to keep the streak alive, he already had the record–but because the Orioles were in a pennant race and they needed his back in the lineup.
That’s why when MLB did a contest and asked fans to vote for the greatest moment in MLB history, they didn’t pick Aaron’s 715 HR or Pete Rose’s breaking Ty Cobb’s record. They picked Cal breaking the record.
You disrespect a lot of hard-working Americans if you think a 7-mo. job as a ballplayer traveling first-class all the way compares to the average working man
We can all agree Brooks is a good guy. He is also being paid to be a professional baseball player. At times this year he has earned that pay. For the past two weeks he has been dreadful. So quit babying and defending him. He shouldn’t be in the lineup. He (and once again Bobby’s bonehead managing) may have cost us the series. So sit him and shut up.
DOB: God bless you for writing that article on Conrad. Plenty of people could have written that in the off season but I appreciate your writing it the following day. I hope he reads it and holds his head up.
love that the Braves are supporting Conrad. I wish the Braves had more players like him on their bench through the years. Yes he made errors, but as DOB noted many times we would not be in the playoffs without him. He has been thrust into a situation due to injuries that is above what the Braves expected out of him – pinch hitter, spot start is a much different role than an everyday player during a playoff chase and the playoffs.
Great job Braves fans. Proud of those cheering. Sets us apart from Philly
Conrad stopped to talk to us for a few minutes while ago coming off field after batting practice. Someone asked if it felt any better after having a night to sleep on it.
“I don’t know about getting to sleep on it – I didn’t sleep a whole lot,” he said. “But the sun came up again today and we’re here in the playoffs playing baseball. You can’t beat that. So I’m excited for today.”
Is he hoping to get an at-bat tonight?
“I’m anxious to get in there [to pinch-hit]. I’m just going to stay focused and stay ready.”
On teammates’ reactions:
“It’s been great. I have such great teammates. I’d rather have the flip-side with them saying ‘good job.’ But it really feels good to have guys like that who’ve stayed behind me after things that have been going on.
“It’s awesome. It just shows what a great team we have. Teammates are behind you, that’s all that matters at the end of the day. It’s been great.”
“And we have great fans. I’ve gotten a lot of nice comments from the fans. That’s meant a lot to me.”
I got him alone after he went into the dugout tunnel and asked about going home to his wife and two kids, ages 1 and 3-1/2, if that helped ease the tension after the game.
“That always puts things out of your mind in a hurry. You’ve got to get home and be a dad.”
They didn’t care about last night, did they?
“No, they just want you to come home and be a dad. It’s pretty cool.”

Great, now the cameraman is injured. All of his pictures will be at odd angles because he’s compensating. It’s too late to call someone up… this is horrible!
Shane – I don’t care for it much either. But I don’t like it when people like to glorify athletes or their own lives for that matter. There are a lot worse, dangerous or more important jobs out there.
P-Town Brave… why don’t you dust off that resume that seemingly reeks of baseball knowledge, and gather some of these other experts on these threads, and march on down to the Braves front office and offer your collective services for next year… Bunch of awipes…

Trey, all thoughts aside, any other manager given SIXTEEN PLAYOFF TEAMS would certainly win more than one single WS.
One comes to mind. Tom Kelly who will never get any consideration for Cooperstown despite the fact that he was an incredible field manager. O by the way, he also won two WS in two trips to the post season.
Unless I missed it, how come nobody but me mentions Glaus and his ‘roid-rage rotted joints the reason Wagner blew out oblique….Guess who inserted Glaus at 3B?
Me…you…DOB,,,or Bobby?
I know it is a repeat of my earlier comment, but that one ended up at the bottom of the last page of the old blog so I decided to mention it again, just to reiterate my point
Coach, how do you know? How do you know we would not have lost 95 with Torre? How do you know Bobby would not have won two WS with the Phillies? The Phillies have a team that any manager can win.
Coach, how do you know? How do you know we would not have lost 95 with Torre? How do you know Bobby would not have won two WS with the Phillies? The Phillies have a team that any manager can win.
And who would you have play right field? In case you have missed most of the season, our other outfielders are not exactly oozing in talent…or hits…or gloves…
Is Frenchy really bitching about what TIME he has to go sit on the bench and watch his team play? Seriously, who does he think he is? I’d wish a 3-error game upon him, but I’m sure his manager wouldn’t leave him in the game after the first two.
Soph – No, I’ve seen teams blow leads before…it happens. Just sucks more when it’s a playoff game, you spend a lot of money, and you have to wake up at 5:30 the next morning. Also sucks that we were a strike (maybe 2) away from winning and how quickly that changed!
Nice to hear fans are treating Conrad well. That combined with the exhuberant cheering during the games, I’d have to give the fans of the ATL a big ol’ kudo.
And ya’ll really should watch MLB tonight. Barry Larkin summed up what I have been B!TCHING about all season long. Tonight’s line up has zero speed, no hit and run ability or the talent to manufacture runs.
You know the average lame baseball fan/follower has no idea what a stale and flat-out poor late-game tactician Cox is…no idea.
Can you imagine MDs in insane asylum asking Mike Hargrove, “C’mon you could not have lost to this guy….You only imagine you lost. An infant would out-manage Bobby Cox.”
I’m going to hold you to that Like I said, I am a big fan of Troy’s and have been since his days with the Angels…but I’m not convinced he will be any better- he may not make any errors, but like the announcers kept saying about the Giants, he won’t get to a lot of balls either- and that could be just as costly…I sincerely hope I am wrong
I don’t know if it was just where I was sitting or if it was everywhere, but 415 must’ve been the douche section. It upsets me a little how inconsiderate and rude some people can be. Like the one chubby guy who stood up and screamed profanities at Conrad after his first error with kids every where.
G@* D@**$ it Conrad!! F*#*!!
I mean, even if there weren’t kids there, what makes people think it’s okay to loudly say this stuff?
Dave, when I complained to someone I know who is a Mets fan, he told me basically to shut up, and that if it was not for Conrad, the Braves wouldnt be in the postseason at all. Maybe so.. but.. it doesnt excuse the fact that Conrad has not performed well defensively in this series. With this team facing elimination tonight, Bobby needed to base his decision, on what Brooks Conrad did for us now, not that he won a game for us a month or two ago. After all, he’s not.. Brooks Robinson, or Chipper Jones.
Hopefully, taking Conrad out tonight will be the right decision, for both him, and the team. Hopefully, we can get a win tonight, and set it up for the deciding Game Five in Frisco on Wednesday.
YAAA JASON HEYWARD. HOME RUN AFTER HOME RUN IN THE BATTING PRACTICE!!!!
MAN HEYWARD WILL DELIVER TODAY
YAAA THANKS FOR THE NEWS DOB!!!!!
my heart rate has decreased now. I am not anxious anymore. Heyward will deliver
Tom Kelly out-managed Cox in game 7 in 1991. Jack Morris and Smoltz both un-hittable. Kelly said “I’m riding my horse until he gives up a run, no matter how long it takes.” Cox, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to get to his bullpen, even though that was the weakest part of the Braves team that year. Someone made a comment earlier about managers putting their teams in the best possible position to win. That’s been Cox’s achilles heel from day 1. He always seem to make the lowest percentage move.
(And before all the Cox defenders come back with something about saving poor Smoltzie’s arm because he was just a young pup, don’t even start with that BS. 3 more innings weren’t going to ruin his career.

“Glaus had at least two throws sail over first base while taking infield at 3B while ago. One of them struck a cameraman’s leg.”
Was his ol’ lady sitting close to the cameraman?

I bet those were Giants fans leading the applause for Brooks. Good move to bench as we can’t have a headcase on the field.

Honey, bring me the bottle of scotch(this is going to be a long night)!

cabravesfan….I don’t care if he pulls a recliner out there with a sandwich to 3rd base…i promise you i will not bitch one time about Glaus!
I’ve been asking for Glaus and Hinske since the beginning of game 1, I’d say since, in their opportunities, they’ve both done pretty well!

Lpad, Playoffs!!! and Shane
I guess that settles that, huh. You guys are off my Christmas card list, now that you’ve gone and hurt my feelings.
I stand by my ascertion that you fellas are jealous of major league baseball players and their money.

Joe Torre has how many WS rings? O wait, it’s because he managed the Yankees.
So what does that make the Braves of the nineties?

I’m going to hold you to that
Like I said, I am a big fan of Troy’s and have been since his days with the Angels…but I’m not convinced he will be any better- he may not make any errors, but like the announcers kept saying about the Giants, he won’t get to a lot of balls either- and that could be just as costly…I sincerely hope I am wrong

If I could relay the throw to the pitcher, and then he could throw over to first, I could probably play some third base again.
I prefer catcher. Sit on a “butt can” about 4 feet behind the plate. Let the softball bounce to me, and return it to the pitcher.
