Next for Braves: Beachy vs. Kendrick

Series preview: vs Phillies

When (TV): 7:35 p.m. Friday (SPSO); 4:10 p.m. Saturday (FOX); 1:35 p.m. Sunday (FSSO).

Radio: 680 AM, 100.5 FM

Probable starting pitchers:

Friday: RH Brandon Beachy (0-1, 2.89) vs. RH Kyle Kendrick (10-10, 4.76)

Saturday: RH Tommy Hanson (10-11, 3.41) vs. TBA.

Sunday: RH Tim Hudson (16-9, 2.76) vs. TBA.

Friday’s matchup:

• Beachy makes his third major league start in place of the injured Jair Jurrjens (knee), including his second against the Phillies. He held them to three runs (one earned) in 4 1/3 innings in his surprise debut. Lefties are hitting .316 off Beachy and righties only .176.

• Kendrick, who is pitching in place of the resting Roy Halladay, has owned the Braves this season, holding them to one run in 15 innings (0.60 ERA) and a .184 opponents’ average but the Braves rallied to win both those games in extra innings. He is 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA in September.

Fourth. I think the Braves only need to win 1 more game to get in but I would love to see them win at least 2 of 3 from the Phillies.

Hope like hell we don’t have to use Hudson on Sunday. We need to clinch on Saturday and use Minor on Sunday. If it’s us against San Fran., it’s going to be a tough low-scoring but exciting series. First time in 4 years I’ve had a team to root for in the playoffs other than whatever team is playing the damned Yankees. Go Bravos!

CHOP CHOP baby, this is what its all about! Can’t imagine how twisted up Beachy is going to be when he steps on the mound tomorrow night but no matter what happens, he’ll never forget it….

We’ll need every bat in the house to squeak out even one win this weekend, but Damn I’d like to see us take 2 out of 3….

Obviously this is an important series….but i’ve love them to sweep the phils..even though its their JV squad….that means we would be riding a 6 game winning streak into the playoffs…and that would be HUGE for our confidence….as for Hudson pitching Sunday…yah, it would be nice to get him some rest….i wonder what our rotation would be IF we make the playoffs….no doubt its going to be the trio of Hudson Hanson and Lowe…but in what order…especially if Hudson pitches Sunday….right now it would set up as 1. Lowe, 2. Hanson, 3. Hudson….and thats if Huddy pitches Sunday….We need the obvious players to keep it going (infante, Mccann, Lee, and Hey) but the wildcard will be Gonzo…..he needs to start playing like he did the first half with the Jays…..as for Melky, Brooks, Diaz and Nate….they just all need to contribute on some level….Bullpen keep doin what your doin….and we might be competitive in the NLCS

Anybody that thinks the Phils will not play to win does not know Mr. Manuel. They will do there best to sweep and come out with all guns a blazin. Kendrick has done quite well against the Braves.

If the Braves make the playoffs(and I think they will) they will need all the hitting they can muster. Here’s a lineup to mull over. Get the word to Bobby Cox. Start Heyward in center, Diaz in right and Hinske in left. Hinske’s defense is as good as McClouth’s and Cabrera’s and his bat more productive than both. Plus he’s a World Series magnet. Let McClouth, Cabrera, and Ankiel(if they all make the 25 man playoff roster) come off the bench. Bobby’s got to stop worrying about who’s on his bench and worry about who’s in his lineup.Cox has got to stop worrying about hurting peoples feelings. It won’t matter next year, and they’ll all be at his retirement sendoff anyway.

The Braves can clinch no worse than a tie for the WC tonight if both the Giants and Padres lose:

If that happens Braves are tied with Giants and 2 games up on the Padres

If Braves lose all 3 games to Phils and:
1) Giants take 2 or 3 from Padres, Giants win West, Braves win WC
2) Padres take 2 of 3 from Giants — Giants win West, Braves and Padres tie for WC
3) Padres sweep Giants — Padres win West, Braves and Giants tie for WC

Go Cubs and Dbacks!!

Bottom line for the Braves playoff hopes…the game going on right now, and the one getting ready to start is just as big as the three against the Phils this weekend. Go D’Backs and Cubs! Would be nice to go to bed tonight 2 games up…and really only need one win this weekend to sew it up!

What would be even nicer, would be for SD and SF to end up tied after Sunday and have to play it off Monday. That would cost them another pitcher!

One thing you all are forgetting. IF the Padres and Giants both win today, the Giants will be 2 up in the west and the Braves will be one up in the WC. That means if the Giants win the first game against SD, they clinch and will rest their starters. That is an advantage to SD as they will probably take the final two games of the series. The Braves need to win the first two games and be done with it!

Proud of the Braves fans! Can’t be there, but the crowds have been great and loud. It is really hard to believe that Bobby’s final regular season weekend is here. Kind of like when Vince Dooley, Bobby Dodd, Hugh Durham, Bobby Cremins, Erk Russell, Ron Polk, and Jack Stallings all retired. Nothing has brought the souteast together like the Braves over the last 25 years. Baseball has definitely stood the test of time and will always the national pastime.

brucemac is in his bathroom toweling off because he was sweating once he saw the Cubbies score in the top of the 9th. He and Mitchell both bet their life savings (in brucemac’s case he bet the whole dollar) that the Padres would beat the Cubs today at home.

Well, the Cubs take three of four from the Padres — I watched the whole game, and it was eerily similar to some Braves games, in that the team ostensibly playoff bound couldn’t get any hits for an excellent pitcher. Thins look about as good as they could short of the Braves having already clinched. With the SRO crowd tomorrow, I think we can win one or two, and one might be all it takes unless the Padres perform a miracle at SF. But the Giants are playing well right now and are a better balanced team than the Padres. So let’s get in and enjoy it — I don’t really expect us to go far. I would just like to see us play well and take the buzz into next year.

Atlanta fans…Giant fan here and you can take this to the bank…there is no way the Giants will lose 3 games in a row to the Padres. Padres after watching their game today had the body language that their season was over. Tomorrow Cain will be pitching and he has been outstanding. Braves have a 2 game lead so your team will have to lose 2 out of 3 and the Giants lose 2 out of 3 just to force a tie. Neither will happen. Braves have all the reasons to win while the Phils are just playing out the string. Giants need to keep winning to keep the Reds from having the better record so they can play at home in the first round. Prediction-Braves travel to San Francisco for 1st round of the playoffs. .

1 more Padre loss OR 1 Braves win and the Braves are guaranteed a 1 game home playoff for the wild card at a minimum.

OTW….Braves magic number is 2 to win the wildcard. Any combo of Padre losses and Braves wins that add up to 2 and Braves get the card.

“Braves have a 2 game lead so your team will have to lose 2 out of 3 and the Giants lose 2 out of 3 just to force a tie.”

Not correct Mr Sears. If your scenario happens…Braves will still win the card by 1 game.

Padres must sweep you to win division. I agree…thats not going to happen.

If the Padres sweep the giants then there will be a 1 game playoff and the loser will have an extra loss so the braves win 1 and there in

I’m encouraged about the Giants. I haven’t been paying attention to them, but I hope they’ll take care of business so we can party with Bobby & the Phillies. What I’m worried about is facing them in the postseason. They have a wicked pitching staff. Too bad they couldn’t go up against the Phils first. Let me not count my chickens, let’s first get the win.

The problem with the Phillie guy’s logic is that if Kyle Kendrick could pitch only against the Braves, he’d be in the Hall some day. He’s one of those very mediocre pitchers/players who excel against the Braves. Nevertheless, we’ll be in playoffs. Give me the Reds in the first round. Giants pitching is scary and they could possibly topple the Phils.

Best scenario for Sunday after Braves take first 2 games of the series.. Braves starting a lineup of Melky in RF, Freeman at 1B, Diory at SS and David Ross catching Kenshin Kawakami while Padres and Giants battle for last playoff spot. Braves take 2 out of 3 or all 3 from Philly and Padres sweep Giants forcing a playoff would be nice.

I always find the comparative stats somewhat misleading. Beachy has a total of about 9 innings in the majors. Was the discrepancy between LH and RH hitters as pronounced in AAA?

The last time Kendrick faced the Braves Gonzalez, Lee, Ankiel, and possibly Conrad and Infante were not in the lineup and Heyward was hurting. He may have success tonight, but previous success against a much different (albeit better) lineup is no real predictor.
