if you think chip caray’s bad (and he is), you should try listening to the marlins announcers for a whole game. i taped the game last night and, long story short, got the marlins broadcast instead of the braves. instead of calling the game, they spent all night (literally) answering emails. ie, “that’s a triple off the wall from conrad….now, joe in port saint lucy wants to know if the marlins are considering a change in the team’s uniforms. what do you think, bill?” this went on for 9 innings. one moronic question after another with hardly any focus whatsoever on the game. absolute clowns.

Ted Williams’ final game and final at-bat — and ever the flair for the dramatic, he homered in his last swing — was 50 years ago yesterday. Wow.
Re-read John Updike’s sterling “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu” with the greatest line ever in sportswriting (and not the one attributed to Woody Paige when propositioned by a young lady during Super Bowl week where he is alleged to have said “$100? For anything? Then how bout going up to my room and writing a column and a sidebar?”) — “Gods do not answer letters.”
Dan Shaughnessy also has a great column on the Splinter today. CHB is hit and miss but this was truly remarkable.
This Braves lineup may not match the orders Cox has been able to fill out in playoffs past but there is one incredible strength this team so many others did not — a deep, deep bullpen. I can see the Braves playing for a lot of one run at a time innings, if they hang on to this wild card lead, and then turn things over to the relievers in the seventh-ninth innings. But they also better play better defense in that case.
