uga, that is pretty amazing. Since so many people seem to be so obsessed with homers and RBI … who leads the Braves in in those two categories? Our catcher who still squints like urkel after every other pitch and has definitely packed the pounds on.

Can anyone answer these questions???

DOB?

How many players have actually played for Bobby Cox during his managerial career? In Atlanta & Toronto? (I am going to take a SWAG…since he has managed over over 4,500 games in his career …29 years…my guess is around 500 players give or take 50 or so…)

How many of those ex-players do you suspect will actually come into Atlanta and be there for his “farewell” tribute on Saturday afternoon? (I am going to take another SWAG…and say that 35% show up…which would be something like this…that between 155 and 195 current and former players will actually show up…not going to count the ex-coaches!)

Hell…it could be alot more?

BELIEVE…(2 up with 3 to play…I like our chances. So does ESPN. They have us down as a 96.1% chance of going to the post season!!!)

I had to cheer for the hated Cubs for a Padres loss, last night. The Padres have no offense and a strong bullpen.

Adrian Gonzalez in his last 10 games is 4 for 34(.125) 1 HR, 1 RBI.

Bobby's Cox

Lots of people here want to criticize Bobby for how he manages & the lineup he puts out there.

How about Bud Black?

Ludwick, for the past 2 seasons, can only hit with protection behind him. Check the dude’s splits & see how he’s hit batting 2nd ahead of Pujols in St. Louis, compared to everywhere else in the lineup this year. It’s not even close. He’s batting like 200 pts higher with AP behind him.

Yet, Black hasn’t hit him in front of Gonzalez. That’s a huge question mark for the Bud against RHP.

First game of Cubs series. 7th inning. Losing 1-0 as Cubs score in top half of 7th. leadoff man is on. No bunt, out. Next guy walks. Can’t score. Lose 1-0. No biggy, can’t blame him there.

2nd game. Can’t make the decision twice. Tied 2-2. Cubs score 2 in 6h to go up 4-2. Bottom 7th again. Leadoff double, then a walk. No bunt. K, K, K. Inning, season, over. Remember, this is the game where SD loaded the bases in the 9th. Gotta play for the tie at home also.

If that’s Bobby not pulling those strings, while the Braves are having trouble scoring runs in a playoff race, we go nuts on the HOF. But, you have to realize, SD’s been a bunt & run team all year, the Braves haven’t. Yet, Bobby’s been bunting, hitting & running, looking at splits when conducting lineups this last week, and especially when Prado went down.

For Black not to call for the bunt twice in the 1st 2 games of that series, against a team that’s played pretty darn well in September….not good.

But, I told my dad and another dude I know (both SD fans), 2 MONTHS ago, that Ludwick can only hit with protection behind him. It’s plain obvious looking at the splits, but it flew under SD’s radar. Dude has only hit .222/.314/.335 with SD since the trade.

It’s a bummer SD is done after such a good year. Would’ve loved to see them over Frisco. Heck, maybe they’ll sweep. Not.

So, if the Braves only win 1 game and the Padres somehow manage to sweep the Giants, we would have three teams tied with the same record. So does that mean that the Braves will automatically be the Wild Card winner? Because the Giants and Pads would have to have a 1 game playoff right? Whoever lost that game would be 1 back in the loss column to the Braves, automatically making them the wild card winner right? Or would the Braves then have to play a 1 game playoff with the loser to determine the wildcard? I am lost on this.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think any playoff game results count toward the team’s regular season record. If the Padres lose a one game playoff that doesn’t put them a half game behind the Braves because it isn’t a regular season game. You did get me wondering though, if that scenario were to unfold would they first have an NL West decider and then another one between the loser of that game and the Braves? Frankly I don’t see the Pads sweeping the Giants, but it could be interesting.

O.J.

Or, if the Braves were to get swept, and the Pads only won 2 games, the Braves and Pads would have to have a 1 game playoff for the WC. But if the Braves were to win only 1 game, then the Pads would have to sweep in order to stay in it. God, this weekend is ridiculous, lol. But I love it!

Just got this off of MLB.com’s website

‘Example of Scenario #5: The Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins all have identical winning percentages at the end of the championship season. The Astros and Cardinals are tied for first place in the NL Central and the Marlins have the highest winning percentage among the second-place Clubs from the NL East and NL West. The Astros and Cardinals would play a one-game playoff on Monday, September 29. The winner shall be declared the Division Champion. Despite the loss, the losing Club would still be considered tied with the Marlins for the lead in the NL Wild Card. Those two Clubs would play a one-game playoff on Tuesday, September 30. The winner of that game shall be declared the Wild Card. ‘

So it appears that we would have to play the loser of a 1 game playoff between the Giants and Pads to determine the WC winner. But as Lew said, the Pads have to face Matt Cain tonight, and he almost no hit the Rockies in Denver, so we shall see.

Gary O

October 1st, 2010
8:25 am

O.J.,

If all 3 teams are tied, Pads and Giants would have a playoff game on Monday to determine the NL West winner.

And then the loser of that game would play Atlanta on Tuesday to determine the WC winner.

However, SF magic number is 1 (to win the NL West), and the Braves magic number is 2 (to win the WC). Therefore, I like our chances winning the WC

Lets try not to get too caught up in scenarios. Obviously nothing guaranteed but the Giants still need to win one game which they will.. Braves need to win at least one game(which they will) Phils and Reds in Philly and the Bravos will travel to SF next week. Should be a enjoyable weekend and a lot of fun at Turner field.

Yes, if we could clinch tonight, we could rest some of our regulars that badly need the rest. Like Jonny Venters, Jason Heyward, Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson and Derrek Lee. Get some at bats for people that badly need it, like Glaus, Freeman, Hernandez. Would be awesome if we clinched tonight.

As for the playoff pitching rotation, I would do 3 for the NLDS (Huddy, Lowe, and then Hanson). For the NLCS, I would find a fourth pitcher.

I know that Lowe is pitching like the ace, but Huddy has been our ace all year, and he pitched really well his last game out. So I would start Huddy for game 1.

The Braves (should they clinch) would open Thursday in SanFran….Game 2 in Friday and the first home game would be Sunday at Turner Field…Game 4 is on Monday (if necessary) and Game 5 would be Wednesday in SanFran.

Lew

October 1st, 2010
9:49 am

beekay-Go look at yesterday’s posts -we pretty well discussed the subject in detail.

Medlen is out for the season next year. Jurrjens is suspect at this point and we have two rookies anchoring our rotation. Lowe has been a stud down the stretch and won 31 freaking games for us in two years. We won’t trade him cause we need him.

As to the outfield bat – we have a bare minimum of $15 mil coming off the books over the winter with Wagner, Saito, Glaus and likely Melky (and maybe Diaz’s) salaries coming off of the books. Attendance is up. We’re likely going to the playoffs which will increase revenue even more. We have the $$$$ to get a bat for the outfield.

McLouth’s and Kawakmai’s salaries are much more of a drag on the team than Lowe’s is.

Anders

October 1st, 2010
9:55 am

Lew- As much as I hate to admit it Francesa made a good point why the Yanks shouldn’t/won’t sign Crawford. They might need that left field spot for Jeter in a couple of years. I actually think they’ll pass on him too. Sounds like he’s going to the Angels with his BFF Tori Hunter.

Lew

October 1st, 2010
9:56 am

Anders- Depends on the oprice he’d go for and whether or not they can move Kawakami, I would imagine.

I’ve heard a figure of $4 mil for Javy, but even with that terrible NY season, I’ betting he’ll command more than that (maybe twice as much).

Don’t see the Braves spending that kind of $$$$ on pitching, but would expect them to maybe find a journey man pitcher on the cheap for #5 starter and let at least oe of the rookies season a bit more – likely Beachy.

And much depends on Jurrjens’ physical progress. If they can convince other teams he’s not hurt seriously, they might try to trade him now.

VA Brave

Last night was big. Thought the Cubs could possibly split with Zambrano and Dempster throwing but winning the series was surprising. Padres didn’t have a hit after the second inning.

Lew- Jeter just doesn’t have as much range as he did. He is 36. Tex showing up last year saved Jeters bacon. He had looked horrible with the likes of Giambi over at first to cover up his erratic throwing that always existed. Just never noticed it with Tino Martinez over there either.

VaBraves-That was my thought, too. It certainly helped Glavine and Maddox. Wish I had a buck for every time I heard of a three inch outside pitch called a “Braves’ Strike”.

I think KK will be moved for sure especially if he has a decent spring. 7 million and only one year will be worth the risk for someone. If he sucks you didn’t lose much. I see our rotation as Hanson,Huddy,Lowe,JJ, and either Minor or Beachy as the 5th. With the 10-15 mill you are talking about would you give Werth say 3 years 30 mill? Would someone offer more?
