I saw this posted on Twitter.. does this seem correct?

“If I am reading correctly, there’s only one way for the Braves to not at least tie for the Wild Card, the Braves being swept by the Phillies, Padres going 5-0 (sweeping SF) and the Giants going 2-3 (being swept by SD). That would make the Braves 90-72, Giants winning the Wild Card at 91-71 and the Padres winning the NL West at 92-70. I think just 1 ATL win vs. the Phillies guarantees AT LEAST a #Braves Wild Card tie with either the Padres and/or the Giants.”

“We win two more games, I don’t care what the Padres do,” Braves closer Billy Wagner said. “We win two more games, we’re going to the playoffs, and that’s what we’ve fought for.”

Is this accurate? Is there no potential for a 1 game play-off with San Diego, if we tie them?

Kat:

San Fran has 5 games left:

If they win 5, puts them at 94 wins, and the Pads are capped at 89.
If they win 4, puts them at 93 wins. If one loss is to San Diego, Pads are capped at 90.
If they win 3, puts them at 92 wins. If two losses are to San Diego, Pads are capped at 91.
If they win 2, puts them at 91 wins. If all three losses are to San Diego, Pads are capped at 92.

From my simple math, the best San Fran/San Diego win combination is 92/91 or 91/92 (meaning that if one team exceeds 92, the other cannot exceed 90). So, if Braves win 1, worst case scenario is a tie with one of the two West teams. Win 2, and Braves are in.

Billy is right.

Go Braves!

Ukuga…..Wagner is correct. That would give us 92 wins and if San Diego wins out that would give them 92 but they get in as the division winner and SF loses out with only 91 wins.

If the Braves make it to the post season the first game they’ll play is Thursday. That is great news.

We all know the Braves have struggled this month, the reason is guys are tired, or handling nagging injuries(Prado who’s now obviously out of the picture). Tim Hudson was not himself, Johnny Venters was human showing signs of fatigue, Jair Jurrjens Eric O’flaherty and Takashi Saito all battling injuries, McCann is tired, Heyward has the thumb issue and hasn’t had many days off, Moylan is pitching A LOT seriously about every game this month, etc……

All of that are reasons for a disappointing September of 13-13. Well if the Braves get in they’ll get 3 days off, all of the sudden guys get healthy, they get more effective.

A well rested Tim Hudson will look like the Cy Young candidate he was before September.

Tommy Hanson will regain some velocity in his fastball and be even more effective than what he has been(he has been very good with the exception of a couple of starts in May and June).

Derek Lowe has been tremendous this month, big game pitcher just needed some big games.

Jair Jurrjens all this time off might give him enough time for his knee to heal, and we all know that when he is on his game you’ve got yourself a cy young type pitcher.

The bullpen everybody is awesome. When you say that you’re worst reliever will be Kyle Farnsworth, it means you have a tremendous bullpen.

Watch out NL

I may be wrong but I believe that the Braves clinch if SF and SD lose tonight and tomorrow. SD would be at 87 wins and SF would be at 89. Even if the Braves got swept, SD would have to win all 3 to tie, and even then SF would be stuck at 89. Maybe wishful thinking but we’ll see what happens.

This night couldnt be going any worse, honestly.
Can’t believe f’n Venable.
That’s just ridiculous.
What’s happening is …. the Giants are basically pushing the Padres away in the division race. And if both teams win tomorrow — which they likely will —- and then the Giants win on Friday night, then THAT race is over.
So, they’ll rest their starting pitchers on Saturday and Sunday (as well as Posey and the old guys like Huff and Burrell) …. and not give two craps about those two games.

If the Braves lose on Friday night …. which is certainly a liklihood with Beachy pitching …. then they’ll have a one-game lead over the Padres with two to play. Which is nice. But both teams will be facing other teams that don’t care …. but the Phillies will still have a potent lineup … even if they’re resting guys. The Giants won’t. So their road will be much easier in those final two games.

F’n Venable. This thing could be over … if he doesn’t make those f’n plays.

Both Giants and Padres have advantages in starting pitching.

Cubs will throw Gorzelanny against Padres’ Garland — who isnt great, but solid. Good news, I guess, is that the Cubs are so RH dominated that they might be able to do well against a lefty starter.

Diamondbacks and Giants both start rookies, but Giants’ rookie is better ….. don’t really care if both the Giants and Padres lose tomorrow.
But one of them NEEDS to.

J-Hey

September 29th, 2010
11:50 pm

if the Cubs don’t win tonight, they might have to settle for a series split.

Gorzelanny is not a great pitcher. The Cubs have lost 6 of the last 8 games he’s started (their two wins you might ask? Against the Pirates and our own Atlanta Braves). And Garland himself isn’t that great either, but he’s no Gorzelanny sorry to say.

What have you seen that makes you think Beachy losing is a likelihood?? I think under the circumstances he’s pitched great, and could have won twice if he had any offense or defense behind him. For a rookie making his 1st 2 major league starts on the road, I think he did quite well. Now he knows he can compete and he’ll be at home. I think he’ll throw a fine game. great series against the Marlins. Just what the Dr. ordered.

Again, not trying to downplay Prado’s importance to this team (when healthy – and even when not, he’s one of the, if not THE leader of this team), but there has been an ongoing conversation for weeks on the ole’ blog about whether healhty “bench” players can be more productive than a starter at 70 percent (or whatever percent they might be at with a nagging injury).

Conrad just proved today (and last night) that a guy good enough to be in the majors that is healthy, is likely better suited to contribute than even a great player when they aren’t capable of doing the things that make them great when healthy.

As unfortunate as Prado going down for the year is. If he wasn’t going to get healthy enough to be the Prado we’ve come to know, it might just be the best thing for this team right now. Prado wasn’t getting it done in the 3-hole the past few weeks.

The only part I don’t like about it in the post-season is that Conrad is the exact kind of bench/role player that comes up big late in post-season games as a PH and sometimes it might work out better to get him the one AB when Bobby wants a guy like him at the plate, rather than him getting 3 AB during the entire game. Just makes Hinske that much more important on the bench.

But today was a GREAT win. Great series sweep. Backs against the wall and they came through all three games. Good stuff.

What can you say about D-Lowe? Guy’s been HUGE in September. Sure it would have been nice for him to go 7 or even 8 innings. But with this bullpen, many of us have been saying all year, that if these starters simply get into the 7th inning with a lead, I like our chances.

This bullpen was already great. Add in a red-hot Craig Kimbrel and NOBODY is going to want to go into the 7th or 8th inning against us trailing by a couple of runs. Very fun series to watch.

The stat ESPN showed on Wagner coming into today is amazing. 7 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, and 16 K’s.

For the first time in a long time we have a handful of guys in the bullpen that MISS bats. That’s huge in October. If this team can scratch and claw it’s way to 3-4 runs per game, it should be real interesting.

This team will go only as far as the lineup lets them. Could be one of those playoff series where we give up 8-9 runs in 4 games and lose the series if the bats don’t come up with the big hits.

Of course, they still have a little work to do to get in the dance, but it’s looking good with SF and SD playing each other the final 3 games and Philly sending the JV team out there. Would have been nice for both SF and SD to lose tonight. But that would be too easy, right?

Much needed off day tomorrow. Guys should get a good rest with an off day and sleeping in their own beds before the final 3 games. Should be a fun weekend. Either way, the season has been a success.

Kudos to DOB. He called it early on. He said it would come down to the final weekend and that he had the phillies winning the east with the Braves winning the wild card. Maybe I should take him to Vegas. We could take in a Whitesnake concert or something!

Not saying this will happen but a three way tie became more of a possibility overnight. Braves would have to go 1-2 against Philly. Then if San Diego wins tonight and goes 2-1 against San Fran that would tie them with Atlanta. The 3-way tie would be complete if SF loses tonight and goes 1-2 as mentioned against SD.

The only other scenario for a three way tie is for San Diego to lose tonight and SF win and then SD sweeps San Fran. Again the Braves would have to go 1-2 for any scenario to occur.

Let’s assume the Padres and Giants win today – going into the weekend:

Braves 90-69
Giants 91-68
Padres 89-70

a) Braves get swept

Only salvation would be a sweep by the Giants over Padres. If the Giants win 2 of 3, there would be a playoff in Atlanta with Padres for the wild card.

b) Braves sweep – they are automatically in.

c) Braves win 2 – final record 92-70

Padres sweep – they win the division and the Giants are out – Braves in. Padres win 2 – Braves are in. Padres win 1 – Braves are in.

d) Braves win 1 – final record 91-71

Padres sweep – they win the division, Braves and Giants have a playoff for the wild card in Atlanta. Padres win 2 – Giants win division and Braves and Padres have a 1-game playoff in Atlanta. Padres win 1 – Braves are in.

So they need 1 win for a playoff and could be in outright if the Padres lose two – 2 wins and they are in. If there is a playoff, Lowe will pitch – probably against Lincecum if it’s the Giants.

Of course the Padres or Giants could lose today, making things even better for the Braves. Bottom line is, the Braves’ chances are pretty good. Wild card playoffs will be in Atlanta.

Whose to say if Jason,Prado,Chipper and Medlen don’t go down we don’t run away with the division? I think we would have applied so much pressure and been able to keep our foot on their throat they couldn’t of come back like they did, but give the Phillies credit they had their share of injuries too. Just wish the timing had been reversed, timing is everything. Braves take 2-3 things should take care of themselves, it’s in their hands now, barring a Padres sweep. Just get in and then scrap for everything you can get and hope the pitching holds up.

If the Padres and Giants lose today, the Braves are guaranteed a playoff at least, even if they get swept by the Phils. If the Padres alone lose today, the Braves are guaranteed a playoff at least unless they get swept by Phils and Padres sweep Giants.
