TIM HUDSON
On the home runs to Adam Dunn:
“You’ve got to make him more aware of fastballs inside and that’s something I haven’t done. I’ve got to do a better job of getting him off those pitches away. I haven’t pitched inside with him enough. Last few times I faced him I think it shows. Last time he hit some deep fly balls to left that were caught for outs. Guys like that you want to make them beat you away. If they beat you away tip your hat to them.”
On the loss at a very bad time:
“Every loss from here on out is tough. Every game from here on out needs to be a playoff type atmosphere in intensity from us. Tonight we didn’t do enough. I didn’t do my job out there. I didn’t make pitches when I needed to. Dunn really hurt us. The two home runs got us behind the 8-ball. Tip the hat to the kid on the hill. He’s coming off Tommy John, but he’s got really good stuff. He kept us at bay a while, we didn’t have enough.”
On if the postseason chances are slipping away:
“We’re definitely not playing good baseball right now. We’re not playing like a team that is hungry to get into the playoffs and that is hungry to get in the playoffs and win. We’ve got to come to the park with an attitude that’s hungry and is passionate about winning. And I think that’s something that’s going to change. From here on out, we’ve got to come with that kind of attitude. If not, we’re going to be packing our (expletive) and going home.”
On if he was saying the passion was lacking tonight:
“It starts with our pitching. I didn’t do my job tonight. When you’re battling and you have a pitcher on the other night, having a pretty nice game as well, you give up a couple crooked numbers. It’s going to be tough to catch up.”
DERREK LEE
On if it was one thing to tip caps to Philly but another to lose to Nats:
“It wasn’t easy to tip your cap in Philly. No matter who we’re playing, we’ve got to find ways to win. When it’s crunch time, it doesn’t really matter who’s on the mound. In the playoffs you’re going to face good pitchers, you’ve got to beat them at some point. I give him all the credit in the world he did his job. But also we’re not doing our part. We’re not getting the job done on our end.”
On if the playoff chances are slipping away:
“No. We’re still there. But we have to play better baseball. We got off to such a great start to the road trip. We felt like we were really gaining some momentum, so it’s a little disappointing to lose these four. But you turn the page and forget about it and try to finish off these last two games off the right way.”
MATT DIAZ
On tipping the cap to the Phillies big three vs. losing game 1 to Zimmermann:
“No cap-tipping. Not taking anything away from Jordan but we didn’t get it done. We show our heart every game; we don’t give up. But we didn’t it done, early, late. We didn’t get it done.”
BOBBY COX
On Hudson:
“We didn’t pitch Dunner too good tonight. The first one came over the heart of the plate, it was down a little bit. The second one was a back door slider and got it in the fire zone too. Other than that (Hudson) was cruising pretty good, just got into a little trouble in the latter inning, the walks starting adding up a little bit. He gutted it out after the line drive on the shin.”
On the lack of offense:
“We just didn’t hit. We’ve got to get some back-to-back hits here pretty quick. We didn’t swing the bats real good tonight. We can swing them a lot better than we did. Zimmermann is one of their top prospects. He’s coming off arm surgery. He was throwing 95, 96, 94, the whole night with control.”
On the line drive off Hudson’s shin:
“I thought it got him pretty good. He didn’t complain much in the dugout at all. He’s never going to use that as an excuse.”

This season has been over since the All Star break. Check the record. Check the road record. Dismal. Check the home record. Not so great either after being amazing. They’ve got no hitters and their pitching is tired. Hudson is tired. Jurrjens is done. Bullpen is tired. This is where Cox fails. He treats every game exactly the same. Every single one. The last four have been no more important than games back in June. And on not juggling our starters for Philly: the Phillies did it. They played Chess–planned moves in advance. Cox’s idea is to the “let the kids play the game.” I bet they lose six of the last eight. Maybe all eight. They’re toast.

Will this season ever end? We get to experience this demolition job all the way to the end. I stopped watching them a while back. Too painful!!! They have so many holes to fill next year it ain’t even funny. I would have given anything if they had held on to Vazquez and Soriano. Vazquez has struggled with Yankees but I think he would have done well with the braves. Chipper needs to go ahead and retire so we can use the salary to get a steady third baseman.

I wouldn’t want to see this team squeak into the post-season — it would end up being one of our biggest embarrassments. So please — no more heroics just to get there. There isn’t enough here to sustain a meaningful post-season participation.

Raleigh: I take no issue with you. You didn’t say it,but BC’s ‘laissez faire’ attitude has been for a ‘good thing’; but now comes my thesis statement: “too much of a good thing, is a a bad thing”. Year after year, this has been true. This year is not a particular exemplar of my thesis. The “good thing” being nothing more than the “ball bounced” when the moon, sun, and stars seemed to coalesce. (In baseball vernacular: we were not as good as our record at its zenith!). The “bad thing” was (is) that BC doesn’t make his managerial decisions in synch with the realities apparent to those whose view comes from distance and perspective. (This is to say, that he makes his judgements subjectively, not objectively. Hence, a Francouer, a Redman (absolute barf), the Orr’s, the Woodman’s, and countless other failures were celebrated far and wide. Oh, Bobby, how we loved ye whilst you expressed confidence after confidence in the losers Shuerholtz and Wren suggested (if not forced) upon you. You, Bobby Cox, celebrated them (almost) all. (You couldn’t abide an Escobar, and a few others- and we cast them out as so many devils!).
So what of my Braves2010? (Bragging rights here: I saw Spahn, Mathews, young Aaron, Cloniger, Shoendienst – ah, it goes on, Horner, Torre there were two of them playing significant roles in Braves history), Murphy – and, vastly forgotten as a hero “Rico Carty”… just let me say it: I recall “Spahn, Sain, and pray for rain”.
Ok, my cred as an “old guy” is established. So what is my point? Blow up this team and its approach to the NL east? Yes, hold on to the core and build from below- but, please, please, please jettison two concepts: “baby braves” and “swagger”. These are perojorative descriptions with no meaningful value: “Swagger”- properly belongs to the long by-gone era of Smoltz/Glavine/Chipper/Justice/Maddox, and the so-called ‘baby braves’ are best-remembered by McCann being embarrassing-thrown-out-at-third in his worst season. (Am I being too harsh, or ‘just sayin’?).
There will be those who attavastically resort to payroll issues? To those voices I can only refer to the well-worn statistic that each incremental change to the previous year’s win-lost record requires an investment of $5M. The NY Yankees, Boston RedSox, and a small handful of other teams bear this out. The (Marlins (2007) and Rays are the poster-childs for “the new way”).
So, lunatic fringe (and I know you are out there!) which business model do you want to follow? Do you think than another 20M gets it done? Do you, fringe!!!??? know what the TB Rays payroll for 2010 is? (As I write this they are 1/2 game ahead of the Yankees!)
I say to you, fringe, that throwing another $10-12 million in payroll is simply “whistling past the graveyard”.
Let the games begin!
You were (are) great for the many qualities for which it can only be said that ‘too much of a good thing is a bad thing’! I mean this with all the respect that someone who saw Stan Musiel play this game can mean.

Oh yeah, you were- the one correct decision made by the Orioles. Cox, just walk away man. Walk away from these chokers. Yeah, you have to play the hand you are dealt and you can thank the loser Wren for that but you bear your share of the blame as well, for continuing to run out other losers, e.g. Ankiel, Cabrera, Minor etc, etc. etc. Jeesh, Wren adds no bats at all zero and then wonders why the chokers pucker up every time they get runners on. Their sphincter muscle is so tight you can see them tighten up from Center Field. Wren’s legacy – Will never make the playoffs! CAN HIS ASS ALREADY!!!!!

Bobby said earlier this week that the Braves are trying too hard. If they try any less they’ll loose the next 8 and average less than a run per game. There is no team in pro ball that the Braves can beat right now. It’hard to believe that there is not at least one man in that club house that is ready to set a fire under the team. As a team they have packed it in.

What, exactly would be the point of making the playoffs with this crew? They can’t muster any gumption against the Phils, who seemed to WANT it more; and they fall lame and flat against a team that’s 23 games UNDER .500. The playoffs would only serve to highlight the embarrassingly lackluster offense and the inconsistency of our pitching. I’m not walking away from the team; I’m only venting my disappointment in them. I think they overachieved in May and June, and have been more themselves since the break. We need some potency in the middle of the order, or the rest of the lineup will continue to be exposed as the role-players they are and should be.

I’m a LONG TIME Braves fan so this is heartbreaking but the Braves are DONE for 2010. The will finish at least 10 games behind the Phillies even though we led them by 7 games before the got Roy Oswalt. They will finish at least 3 games out for the WC. I’ll be surprised if we win more than 2 of our remaining games. It feels like another finish like last year where we lost 6 in a row. We must go after Cliff Lee this offseason no matter what it costs…. Lee, Hudson, Hanson and Lowe would allow us to compete well for the Wild Card in 2011. If we can sign Werth away from the Phillies that could help us close the gap on them. New ownership would be a great thing soon… I miss the Ted Turner days when the Braves signed whoever they wanted. Looking back I guess it was a lot easier to be the Braves GM when the checkbook was open to go after the best players and re-sign your stars to long term deals.

Sounds to me that Hudson is echoing what McCann said – namely that the team has to step up
I guess Cox needs to set him straight and tell him it cant be done
And here’s a hum-dinger from the king of stupid
Cox on Hudson – ““We didn’t pitch Dunner too good tonight. The first one came over the heart of the plate, it was down a little bit. The second one was a back door slider and got it in the fire zone too. Other than that (Hudson) was cruising pretty good, just got into a little trouble in the latter inning, the walks starting adding up a little bit.”

In a way it’s going to be a relief to not have to watch Bobby Cox blow another Post Season up with his poor baseball instincts. I know he’s a great players manager and he made history with his run of regular season division championships but there aren’t many managers that could screw up a season with Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz pitching 60% of your games and then having Avery, Neagle or John Burkett pitching 20% more. They also had at least two power hitters that hit 30 or more homers and many times had 3 to 5 players hit more than 20. We went from McGriff to Galarraga, and from Justice and Gant to Andrew and Sheffield and Chipper on the same teams. Plenty of power to support the game plan of march out a top of the rotation starter and play for the 3 run homer. They could win a lot of games 3-1 or 4-2 that way. There are at least 10 managers in the majors today that would win their divisions every year with those teams. The difference is of those 10, 5 of them would have one more than one WS with those teams. Larussa, Soscia, Torre, Gardenhire and Francona would all have one more than one. Francona has done it in a tougher division twice and Larussa and Torre have certainly done it. We need a great game manager with a good balance between player relations and just plain baseball smarts and instincts. Bobby didn’t seem to display great instincts when it mattered most. It’s time to let a fresh mind or proven winner take this team and build it with the young core of talent they have to start with.

para brave,,,,,,,, we should have let a smoking hot Freddie Freeman take over 1st base and platoon him with Glaus against a tough lefty like Hamels instead of bringing him up and let his red hot bat cool off. We should have gone after Oswalt. He made public statements that his first choice would have been Atlanta. That would have finished off the Phillies because they were 7 games behind the Braves when they got Oswalt. We let them hang around and then pick up a top of the rotation starter. Frank Wren got out GM’d big time and I think he deserves to lose his job because he had a team that was 7 games up and made all the wrong moves at the deadline including trading for someone that was grimacing in pain with every swing ” Lee” and letting his future 1st baseman watch it all helplessly from the bench. Unexplainable!!!

Braves have no life and are in desperate need of a new manager who has some life in him. What is with Nate McCouth? The guy cannot hit (which he has proved that all year), his fielding is pathetic. He is so poor he almost looks like he is making mistakes on purpose to throw the game. Better call his bookie or better yet, Pete Rose. With all the talent sitting on the bench it seems like Booby Cox goes out of his way to put the absolute worst player in almost every situation. Now I remember why I stopped watching the Braves years ago. Everyone gives all this praise to Cox, can’t figure it. Shearhoultz is the reason we were in the spotlight all those years. With pitching of the Big 3 and Leo’s coaching, how could we lose? Bobby is a drunk and a wife beater let us not forget. Turn out the lights, get on with it, the party is over…, Braves lose as usual…., again. Great Team…, terrible manager.

McLouth comes back and Gregor Blanco doesnt make the 40 man roster for September? Why? Please justify that. Ever heard of a hit and run? a stolen base every once in a while? We play this old school baseball that obviously doesnt work. Shuffle the rotation for big games to try and give our team a chance. Two rookies faced the Phillies when we are in a major wild card fight? What are you thinking?

I’ve read numerous blogs wishing Ted still owned the Braves. Those were the good old days and yes Ted had an open wallet but their are teams with payroll limitations that remain competitive. Oakland and Florida stand out. It all boils down to the GM understanding how to be creative and think outside of the box. Wren does not have that ability. Google him and look at the transactions he has made during his tenior as our GM. It’s not pretty. His hiring was based on friendship, not ability. He really wow’ed them in Balt. Don’t expect him to go anywhere. JS is loyal.
I am amazed at how these players making more money in one year that I’ll see in a lifetime can’t get motivated to play a game. Baseball may be a business but it’s still a game. I’d be grateful every day if I could go out and hit a ball for a living vs punching a clock.

Spreading the blame should go no further than Cox and Wren. Cox clearly lacks the skill to motivate the modern day player. Wren has does nothing to help this team other than to increase the average age of the team. The list of his failures (McClouth, Ankiel, Lee, Gonsalves) gives little hope for next year. Wren, Cox and the entire coaching staff should leave at the end of the year.

Take away this “all I see is a HOF’er mgr attitude” and if this stubborn performance was on any other team, he would have been fired if he wasn’t set to leave this year. Now it is just PR, the Braves are just looking for a way to sell tickets for the old man’s going away party these last few games. It is a shame. He could have tinkled with the line up..done something, but he just trotted out the same guys never trying something different to spark the club. I’m uust dissapointed. These are guys that over achieved all year, the quality you want in players yet they had no one at the helm to guide the ship.sending a kid to AAA to find his allstar swing, what does that say for the current hitting coach? Another player goes to his “old” coach on another team for hitting instructions. something here that says if there is smoke there is fire. ATL Krusher, the Braves didn’t call up Gregor Blanco because he doesn’t play for us. He was traded along with a couple of minor leaguers to KC for Farnsworth and Ankiel. I get your drift though, Blanco should have been placed in center permanently when it was apparent McClouth couldn’t get the job done but here we are.

BF in Nashville. We simply cannot afford what your proposing under our current salary structure. Chipper, Lowe get nearly 30 million between them next year. McClouth another 6 1/2 mil. That’s over half our payroll right there. Jurrjens is up for arbitration, no more major league minimum for him etc. Going to get a 15-20 million dollar a year pitcher like Lee is a fantasy without giving up our great pitching prospects. Besides we need a banger, desperately. I can’t remember the last time we had a guy hit 30 home runs, maybe since Andruw left..

I have been following this team since 1966. I cannot image why they played with such drive and emotion during the summer to fall flat and appear to simply give up when the prize was so close. Not having played professional sports I guess there are things that I just am not smart enough to understand. It is one thing to lose to a better team; Phillies; it is another to be trounced by Washington, Marlins, etc. Good Luck to Bobby in his retirement and hopefully Frank Wren will be able to do what is needed to become a real contender next year.

Braves were playing so terribly early in the year, everybody except one or two in a slump. Then some magic started happening & I got excited again. And they blew it. This is the absolute worst performance I have ever seen. The odd thing is that looking at the standings, we will probably win 90 this year & it will look good in the books. I am a die-hard supporter & I agree with almost everything other fans are saying. About Bobby, TP, the lack of enthusiasm, the terrible decisions by the GM. But I know that in the end, they all did the best they could with what they had. Why criticize them now? Constructive criticism is good, but none of us are in a position to do that. That would be their Dad’s job, etc etc. Too late for any kind of useful advice. I guess we are all just venting.
Anyway, I’m getting excited about next year. Sure the payroll stinks, all the dead weight in it, but I’m hoping for a lot of changes. See Heyward as a second year player, a full year of Freeman. There’s always next year. I agree with everyone else, the Braves aren’t really interested in going to the Playoffs, cause if they were, they would step it up, bunt when they needed to, work the count, get on base, make the play in the field, etc etc. But this is Bobby’s team & this is part of his legacy. If he wants to go out like this, so be it. He’s set for life. All these players are pretty much set for life. Why let their performance ruin my day. I’m watching to escape my dull-drum life. I’m not gonna let this lousy team make it any worse. So maybe I’ll have a chuckle or too & ask myself, “what the heck was he thinking?” And then prepare for the playoffs and cheer for the underdog. I wanna see those Phillies go down burning.

“Dunner”… Bobby Cox describing the state of the Bad News Braves season… just wondering what it’s more done than?!? Perhaps his tired old brain cells? I’ve not gotten into the Cox bashing, but at this point this whole mess points squarely to the bench guidance – of which none exists… pathetic…

Kaminari … I’m excited too about next year if by excited you mean watching a team of kids and low budget vets go 75-87. What leads you to expect that Frank Wren can judge talent well enough to restock the roster once this year’s deadwood is torched? We need to find someone who’ll hit us 30 HR, knock in 100+. Will it be Heyward? Possibly. But he’s our only hope because the Braves have no budget to compete for a player of that value in the free agent market. Our outfield production is a major league disgrace. Wren wanted to dump Vasquez to sign Hudson, I’m OK with that but we wasted Vasquez’ value to acquire Melky and pitchers with “live arms” someday. Bad deal. Derrek Lee was doing nothing with the Cubs and he’s faceplanted here. The only move that has half worked was getting Gonzalez who has put up similar numbers here (but in more time) than Tejada has in SDO. These final eight games are the best shot the Braves will ever have to make the playoffs for the foreseeable future. Win now baby because the bankbook is empty.

After a sorry road trip, the Braves will come home and complain when there is less than sold out lethargic crowds at the remaining home games. Hey, the fans are just taking on the character of the team & it’s manager: few are showing up & nobody is fired up.

Cox has us rolling in the home stretch . These guys need motivation ? If they do (which is laughable), he’s not going to give it.
The excuse in Philly was 3 top pitchers. Now what’s the problem ? A tough 2nd yr guy coming off the DL recently ? Today, it’ll be a guy they;’ve only faced once before.
I guess they didn’t know Dunn had power either ? He hasn’t been around long either ? Let’s see -drafted in 1998 by the Reds ….

The Braves and their management no longer recognize the words “lose” or “loss.” Rather, they “tipped our caps” last night or “we’re one game in back of the Pads in the cap-tipping column.” I’m all warm and fuzzy over their mantra of pragmatism, maturity and sportsmanship.

With hitting/scoring runs a problem, its shows how bad the hitting is when you call a Diaz a good hitter when he is hitting .240 with an OBP of .290.

Thank God Cox goes and TP with him. The most underachieving Mgr of all time with the talent he had to work with. Chipper retires, blow out Lee, Ankiel, Melky and McClueless and Farnsworth, Starting infield next yr Prado 3rd, Gonzo ss, Infante 2nd Freeman 1st, Heyward in right, go get Carl Crawford and another big bat and with this bull pen and some enthusiasm they will be tough. This lame ass attitude management style has been old since 96

I can’t remember when I’ve seen any team fold up like this. Braves record in the last 5 weeks is dismal at best. The worst thing about it was that the schedule was in their favor. They ended up getting to play the Pirates and two sets with the Nats. Sorry, but these are the two worst teams in the national league. What does Atlanta go out and do? Get their lunch handed to them by both teams.! It just looks like to me that they don’t want it bad enough……anybody else feel the same?

Bobby, get your fat stupid butt on the bus to Bartow county. Maybe some folks can’t see what a hack manager you are, but a lot of us know the truth- you’re a terrible manager and you always have been. Now go get on your tractor and let someone else manage the team. All you’ve done is left a lot of Braves fans with one question that they will never be able to answer: “How many World Series Championships would a GOOD manager have brought home with the teams you took to the playoffs?”

Had this team in spring to Win 95 games and clinch a wild card. I knew Bobby would screw up a chance for the division but I never thought he would start right after the all star break. 7 games up and you continue to tinker with the chemistry and like all all inconceived chemisrty projects it again has blown up in our face, thanks Bobby, I for one am glad this is it for you you have ruined another season taking defeat out of the jaws of victory

No matter how bad the team performs Bobby has nothing bad to say to his team. You know why? Because Bobby’s job is safe. He is like a dictator in that organization. If I know my job is safe and no one can fire me I will have only great things to say about my team.
And why would Hudson say “We didn’t perform well?” He should be saying “I screwed up the game. ” This is the worst game of his life and he pitches the worst game of his life whne we need the most and Bobby is just calm about it ., This is a shame

Dear Bobby: Before you depart do something remarkable in order we can remember you (at least for one time) as a real Manager: SIT ALL THE REGULAR PLAYERS, they are tired, lost confidence in theirselves, and the most important they are not having fun and we neither. BRING THE BENCH TO THE FIELD!!!!, you has nothing to loose, you’re loosing every dayanyway. Make the following line-up for today and keep it if they win, if not go home early:
1-Dyoris Hernandez SS
2-Bruce Conrad 2B
3-Jason Heyward RF
4-Troy Glauss 3B
5-Erik Hinske LF
6-David Ross C
7-Freddy Freeman 1B
8-Melky Cabrera CF
9-Pitcher.
