BOBBY COX
“Dickey is a tough customer to beat, he really is. Derrek Lee came through big today with the grand slam, and our defense put on a five-star performance, I thought. Double play after double play. Every day I see Gonzalez see something different out there that opens your eyes wide.”
“I thought Lowe pitched a great game. I honestly thought the ball Wright hit was going to be an out when it left [the bat], but it ended up being a home run. He only gave up four hits. But he did cover first a lot, ran the bases. He was a little bit tired.”
On Lee’s homer
“He kept challenging him. He had to with the bases loaded, full count.”
On Lee’s defense
“D makes all kinds of nice plays. He’s really good over there.”
More on Lowe
“Derek has the ground ball going. He changed speeds again really well, and we gave him a lot of support.”
Wagner just a day off before Philly series?
“Yeah, Kim [Kimbrel] had a good day, I’d say. If he doesn’t deflect the ground ball, it’s a routine out.”
On importance of starting this trip out on good note
“Every game is important from here on out, every series, every game. For whatever reason, I don’t know, at home we’ve won a lot of games in the eighth and ninth innings. A lot.”
On Philly series
“It’s always good to go in on a winning streak.”
Expect a playoff atmosphere there?
“It’s a playoff atmosphere every game we play now. This seemed like playoff atmosphere – in my stomach. Every game’s that way.”
On Alex Gonzalez
“He’s been terrific for us, hitting and fielding. Just terrific. He’s a seasoned veteran that knows how to play the game.”
On Prado’s health (still got a sore finger, and had huge ice packs on thighs/knees after game)
“He’s not 100 percent. He plays. He did the same thing last year. He’s a gamer.”
DEREK LOWE
“It wasn’t an ideal start, but it was such a long way to go. We just found a way to get a couple of runs off Dickey. Then we did what we’ve done all year, we scored runs off the other team’s bullpen. That’s been kind of our trademark this year. As starters we try to keep us in the game as long as we can. It worked out pretty much how it has all year.”
“Historically, the first couple of innings are when I have the most trouble. I didn’t feel like our gameplan was not going to work just because of the first inning. We had a long way to go. But there were some easier innings along the way. That sixth inning you kind of figured that was going to be the end of the line [for Lowe] with me leading off. So that David Wright out for me was a big out to keep us at 2-2.”
On sweeping Mets series
“You couldn’t have asked for anything more when we came in here. We knew we needed to play better than we did against Washington in all phases. We did exactly what we needed to do, and set ourselves up for a really fun next three days.”
On Philly series
“We know they’ve lined up their rotation to give us their three best. It should be a lot of fun.”
On Derrek Lee
“He had a couple of big hits, and he made a couple of great defensive plays with me, especially in the sixth inning to not let Reyes start off with a leadoff double, to keep that inning a lot easier than it could have been.
“He finds a way to get a huge hit, to date it’s probably the biggest hit we’ve had, and we’re going to need everybody to contribute. It’s good to see. I know every time you come to a new team you always want to start off with a huge bang, and he’s coming along great of late.”
On Gonzalez
“Defensively he comes in with a great reputation, and I’ve seen him vaguely with Cincinnati. But guys who’ve played with him in Boston and in other cities said he’s tremendous defensively, and he is. He’s done nothing but live up to the hype.”
BRIAN McCANN
On Philly series
“This is what you train hard in the offseason for, and going to spring training, and all the hours you put into baseball, to play in a playoff-like atmosphere and to make it to the postseaon.”
*”We want to just keep playing good baseball. I don’t think we’re worrying about too much. We had a team meeting the other day and talked about not looking at the scoreboard. We talked about just handling what we could handle, and we did that in New York. Now it’s time to move on.”
Expect even more intensity that usual in Philly?
“I’m sure. Hundred percent. We know what we’re getting ourselves into. We’ve all been there. We’ve all played in front of the crowds, where they’re going to be cheering from pitch 1. So we’ve got to be ready, and I think we will be.”
How encouraging to see the all-around solid performance this weekend?
“Very encouraging. These are the games that in the last week-and-a-half were getting us. We all answered the bell, and this is just such a big three-game series. Now we turn the page and move on.”
Looks like Lee is starting to warm up out there
“Absolutely. Get a Gold Glove first baseman and a guy of his caliber – what he did today was put us on his back. Tie ballgame, two outs, 3-2 count, and he hits one of the furthest balls I’ve seen hit this year. We’re all so glad to have him.
“Defensively, him and Gonzo today – [Gonzalez] does it all the time. But what he’s done with the bat the last two days, he’s driving in some key runs. We’re glad we have both of those guys.”
More on Philly series and how big it is
“I don’t think any of us are looking at it as, ‘Oh my God, we’ve never been here before.’ I got to play in the playoffs when I was 21, so I can’t imagine it being any more nervewracking than it was then.
“You know, there’s a lot of young guys in here, but we all expect to be here. We all expect to produce at this level, and I don’t think anything’s going to take us away from that.”
CRAIG KIMBREL
On getting his first save
“That was exciting. My heart was racing. Pretty cool.”
You didn’t look nervous
“Well, I was on the inside. At least I didn’t show it on the outside.”
Surprised you were called on, or did you know Wagner was getting a day off?
“I didn’t know. When they called my name I was like, OK, let’s go. Let’s get ready to go. I was already ready to go before I even threw a pitch.”
“Top of the ninth, they called down and said, you’ve got it. Just like that, I was ready. It was very cool.”
Good to get it in that setting?
“Yeah, we’re in the hunt, winning three games in a row here, which is huge for us. Just being put in that situation down the stretch was awesome.”
On striking out Beltran looking to start 9th
“It always makes it easier when you get the first batter. Once I got the first batter out of the way I was like, OK. I took a deep breath.
“After that last strikeout it felt good. I’ve been working for it for a long time and finally got it.”
DERREK LEE
Longest one you’ve hit in a while?
“Yeah, that one felt good. I flushed it. It’s always nice when you feel it come off the bat like that.”
Felt better the last couple of weeks?
“I felt OK the last couple of days. Something to build off of. Like I said, I’m going to grind all the way through and try to help this team.”
On winning in New York before the Philly series
“It’s no secret, these are big games. We need them all. It feels nice to contribute. It’s a big start to the road trip, these three games, but we’ve got to keep going.”
On getting a hard-hit ball that wasn’t on the ground
“It felt good to get a ball in the air. I’ve hit some balls hard, but mostly on the ground. So it felt good to get some elevation.”
The situation make it that much more meaningful?
“Yeah, this is the best part of baseball. This is the fun part. You know when you do something, it’s really meaningful.”
On the sweep of Mets
“It’s been a good series. Pitching and defense, bullpen’s been good, got the hits when we needed them. That’s what this team does. We don’t really blow you out, but we stick around and get the hits when we need ‘em.”
On the Philly series
“It’s a big series. Obviously they have great pitching and they have a great offense. But I like our team, too. I think it’s going to be a good series, and we’ll see what happened.”
On team’s performance since the team meeting Friday
“We all understood the importance of this road trip, and we were ready for it. That being said, it’s only three games of nine. We’ve got to keep the same focus and intensity for the next six games.”
On what he expects in Philly
“Philly’s always fun. They get good crowds, and they’re into it. East Coast crowds are loud, so it should be fun.”

Dear YB,
I’ll be at the Bank for all three. I wouldn’t miss it for the World.
If you win, I’ll come here everyday and bow down before Bobby’s tired old liver.
But, I doubt that’ll be needed. Despite the fact that Mr. Wren has actually traded about as wisely as possible, and set you dopes up for many nice seasons, you weep, whine, and wail like old Arab women after a flood.
Could you maybe put some people in the seats when next we come to town?
Oh, and in your hearts, you know you’re toast.
Sincerely,
Alex

JJ needs to return to form tomorrow so we try to win NL East (and have homefield advantage in the playoffs). Otherwise, if we do get in the playoffs, we would need to win these tough road games. Looking forward to facing the Phillies and bringing them back down to earth.

While sweeping the Mets is nice, winning at least 2 out of 3 in Philly is a must to make the playoffs. And, as we saw today, beating Philly is not going to be easy. Bobby is finally managing like the games matter, but I remain concerned about Prado, DLee, and any OF not-Heyward. Also, the pitching matchups are not favorable. JJ has been unreliable, Minor is a rookie, and Hanson versus Oswald is not a matchup to look forward to. Losing all three in Philly may end it for the season given the Rockies play this month.
But it’s baseball, anything is possible. Just not probable.

Can’t wait, just hope like everyone else that jurgens has got his recent problems worked out and he pitches like he’s capable. Other than that it should be a great series, allot better than probably most people think due to the pitching matchups. Minor could be our dark horse aganst philly, so i’m glad to see him get a start. If we can win this series, we have a great chance of winning this division.

On Thursday I wrote on Mark Bradley’s blog (p. 4): “I hope we go 6-3 on our road trip, but it’s quite conceivable that we could go 3-6 and come back no worse off than we are now. Here’s a more hopeful scenario: could we take the first two from the Mets? I think so, and if we do, we’ll be psyched to take the third, then we can go into Philly on Monday with a good vibe. If we could then take the first in Philly, I would fancy our chances at taking one of the other two — you see how it could go?”
Well — so far, so good!

Thanks for the love!
As near as I can figure it, Jayson seems to be right. So, since the Cox were in FIRST!! for sooooooooo long this season, it stands to reason that there were oodles of sellouts ( not really thinking of most Bravos fans when i use the term “sellout”, but we digtress…) allll season long, right?
Tell ya what Jayson, if a full house actually gets to The TED, and sits through the entire game, I’ll not only genuflect in front of Bobby’s liver, but I’ll join that ever so long line of little Bravos fans who dream of the day when Saint Chipper might call them to shake him off, if you catch my meanin’.
Are you not entertained?

The Braves had a 7 game lead but were not man enough to hold on to it, FACT. as for 43,000 hanging together, that is how you support a championship baseball team. The one excuse that can be accepted for the Braves “collapse” (and face it they collapsed) is the FACT that they have the worse fan support of any contender in the league. Even IF you win the division this year, you’ve still got 10 to go before you can even think about claiming ownership. Let’s see where the losingest franchise in sports history is then. When was the last time that the Braves even made the playoffs ? yea I know, somewhere back there in History. As I said,, we own the division and we own the Bravos and we will prove it this week. Live in the now not in your 1 championship in 14division titles history, we are writing ours now. Oh and I won’t leave until I choose to, having too much fun educating you hicks. Why can’t we all just sit back and enjoy what’s going to be an unbelievable series? I think this series is going to be exciting. I really don’t believe either team is going to “CRUSH” the other but I do believe both teams are going to be playing all three games like it’s the 7th game of the world series. PS – I was at the game today and Derek Lee crushed that ball.

Oh and y’all are so down on the braves. How bout when y’all
were 6 games ahead of the braves – this year and we took that away from you … That is a fact as well. So these 3 little games are gonna be so sweet when
the BRaves take the title to know thst they came back twice in the same season to take the title. Man it’s gonna be sweeet. So I guess when y’all lost the 6 game lead was different than when the braves did. …. You guys are they delusional ones. Not
only are you idiots but oh wait that’s it your idiots. Know of what you speak
before you do instead of running those Bobby cox holders., The dynamite is ready to go BOOM all over fillie village!!! Go braves. You guys are skeered and your trolling shows it!!! Fact

Hahahaha. You’re pathetic philee fan. Three or four Phillies fans come over to talk trash, and you’re claiming some sort of victory of our blog? Get a life. And bring something of value next time, like the following:
Roy Oswalt is 0-3 with a 7.58 ERA in seven career starts against the Braves, with a .354 BAA and 1.79 WHIP (not sure if you understand what that means, because you haven’t actually talked about baseball yet).
And in case you think that’s insignificant, his second-highest ERA against an NL team is 3.82. The Braves simply own Roy.
There won’t be any four-run ninth innings off Wagner. Better get your runs early, because this pen won’t give an inch.
In honesty, this should be a great series. We’ve played the Phillies well this year and I don’t expect that to change this week. I’d be shocked if either team comes up with a sweep, but it comes down to the two teams who have been battling it out all year. Can’t wait to watch.

Honestly, who cares who wins the division? Honestly, even I don’t care if the Braves flounder in this upcoming series. What matters is MAKING IT INTO THE POSTSEASON. From there, who knows? The Phils could be eliminated there by a surging Rockies team or a confident Reds team. And the Braves? We’ll see.
I mean it. We’ll see. The Braves will make it into the postseason, one way or another.

The big thing is to win 2 out of 3. That would put us in the driver’s seat for the wild card. Realistically, we’re 3 games out and a shame that the Nats couldn’t hold onto a 3 run lead in the ninth last night
