Braves quotes after loss dropped them to second-place

TIM HUDSON

On the seventh inning:

“A couple pitches essentially cost us the game. Just didn’t make two pitches. The hit to (Pedro) Alvarez was a cutter that I didn’t quite finish it like I wanted. Their shortstop I tried to go sinker in, it stayed over the plate. That cost us two more runs. It just stinks because it felt like we should have won the ball game but two pitches cost us the game. We didn’t play good enough to win and they did.”

On if he felt he needed to be perfect:

“I feel like I should go out there, whether we’re scoring runs or not, my job is to go out there and give up less than we get. Tonight I wasn’t able to do that, put up zeros when we needed it.”

On whether people put too much on him as a stopper:

“I feel as a whole, everybody needs to pull their weight. Everybody on the pitching staff, whoever is in the lineup each night has to do what it takes to win ballgames. Unfortunately we’ve come up on some short ends of some games.”

On the Phillies taking over first place:

“They’re playing better. We knew all along the Phillies aren’t going away. We’ve just got to play better baseball. We’ve got to go out there and do the little things it takes to win, scratch some runs across here and there. We’ve known that the strength of our club is pitching and playing good defense. Nights like tonight you have to go out and do your job and it wasn’t the case tonight.”

On the mentality now that they’re in second place:

“We knew coming into tonight. There’s a lot of baseball left. Do we expect to be in first place until the end of the season – it’d be nice but we also understand that Philly is a pretty good team. There are a lot of games left with Philly, we’ve got six games left with him. Whoever wins the division is going to be the team that plays the best against each other head-to-head.”

BOBBY COX

On Hudson:

“He was so good. He struck out the first hitter in the seventh, (Neil) Walker with great stuff, just gave up three or four line drives in a row for whatever reason. Just location I guess. He was on top of his game. I thought he might throw a no-hitter after the fourth inning, nothing was hit good, little tappers. But we’ve got to get some runs, that’s the bottom line. He pitched plenty good to win tonight.”

On if players are pressing:

“Pressing? No they’re not. You can say that all you want. It’s a case we ran up against some pitchers we haven’t hardly seen and that’s what happens sometimes. No, not pressing.”

On falling out of first place:

“It happens. You can’t do anything about it. You’ve got to worry about each game as they come along.”

DERREK LEE

On the lack of offense:

“Yeah it’s tough because Huddy pitched so well. Give him a couple runs and he’s going to get the win. I had a big shot there and just killed the momentum with the double play. That’s kind of how the night went; we couldn’t get the big one.”

On the Braves’ mentality now:

“We’re OK. We’re a good team. We’re obviously in a rough spell right here. But there is still a long ways to go and we play them (six times). So we still control our own destiny. This team knows we’re good….Win games and everything takes of itself. We try to win every night and see where the chips fall at the end of the season.”

BC can say anything he wants. These guys are pressing everytime they get in a position to drive in runs. They know they are slumping mire than us fans do. It’s the managers job to manage. Derick Lee should not have been in that position anyway. Right handed pitcher and you got 2 first basemen thst bat lefthanded. BC the guy who always goes lefty righty. And righty lefty. I think Bobby Cox has been great, but some of this goes on him. Freeman or Henski should have been there. Not Derrick Lee. Period. Go get em tomorrow and I tipping my cap to noone I’m tired of thst lame arse cliche. Go Braves.

The Braves defense has been horrible all year.Despite that, that 6 games with the Phils will decide the division and wild card. Go Bravos!

When you stable is half full of Nags, who can expect them to dash for the finish line. Looks like Gas Tank is empty with some of them. Good while it lasted. I don’t think this will be good farewell to BC. Next year, begin the youth movement.

It’s been a long time coming, but the Philadelphia Phillies are once again in their rightful place, with the Braves playing the part of the Mets this year. I wish Atlanta had some pro sports fans who actually care, but oh well; no worse than Pirate “fans” I guess. I’ve never been so happy for our red-headed step-child of a city out in western PA. How the ‘Burgh escaped West Virginia’s clutches I’ll never know.

“The Phillies went 1-5 in their first 6 games after the All-Star Break. After their 5th loss in that stretch, they fired long-time hitting coach Milt Thompson. Thompson was very popular among the players.

In the 46 games that have followed Thompson’s firing, the Phillies are 32-14.”

How in the world can Bobby honestly use the “we haven’t seen the guy” line? That has been a Braves problem for years, and it’s a pretty pathetic excuse. With scouting, film, etc. there’s enough info out there to know what to expect. A guy with a 5+ ERA and .300 average against is bad whether you’ve seen him once or 100 times. Other teams clearly don’t have trouble hitting against pitchers like that.

Derek Lee is awful. 100 more at-bats than Glaus and 8 fewer RBI. Glaus has not played in 3 or 4 weeks and still leads the team in RBI. He was on pace for 22 HR and 95 RBI. If I told you he would get that at the beginning of the year you would have taken it in a heartbeat.

On falling out of first place:

“It happens. You can’t do anything about it. You’ve got to worry about each game as they come along.” — Bobby Cox

—————————————

You can’t do anything about it? Our manager says there is nothing you can do? How about setting a lineup to compliment your hitters? How about putting out the best pitching you have and not rolling the dice with a pitcher who couldn’t get AAA or major league hitters out all year? How about giving young talent, not jus prospects, but solid young hitters eager to contribute? How about avoiding hitters who strike out over half their at bats? Etc., etc., etc.

Why?????

September 7th, 2010
11:43 pm

“This team knows we’re good….” Really, Derrek Lee? Maybe you need to lose some of that smugness and get down to winning because the season is ending soon and you’re treading water playing .500 ball. Ask Diaz how that “swagger” is working tonight?

Oh, and while you’re at it, how about contributing to this team instead of sucking the life out of it by striking out and hitting into double plays with RISP? You should do the honorable thing and DL yourself. It was obvious yesterday that your back is hurting you. Why take the team down with you? Selfish much?

Lower point? Losing 9 straight or losing a series to the MLB worst Pirates in September? I don’t know if the Braves realize it, but they don’t have a 7 game lead in the east anymore. If this team continues the lack of offense, there needs to be a lineup shakeup. Keep Ankiel, McClouth, Melky, Diaz, and D Lee of the field. See what Glaus can do at third, Freeman at first, Infante in CF, Prado at second. While the trades at the time seemed like an improvement, I would rather have a speedy aggressive Blanco than Farnsworth, Ankeil, and D Lee. Bobby needs to light a fire instead of his allowing playing out of slumps. It would be nice to see the team support the pitcher.

The “Bums” used to say, “Wait until next year”. That will not be good enough for Braves’ fans who obviously will be served more leftovers for a team next year and many more to come by Braves’ upper management who refuse to adequately finance a “winner”. They and Bobby will be leaving a losing situation to any manager.

If a pitcher fails to get outs they are pulled from the game. If a fielder makes several actual or mental errors, I’ve seen them pulled from the game. If a hitter who was obtained to drive in runs, kills the momentum by lining into a double-play, why should not they be pulled from the game and another player given a chance.

A single in that situation would have driven in two runs and maybe Hudson would not have felt pressured to pitch a shutout.

I blame it on the Bob Davidson’s call at the Phillies-Marlins game and that game at Coors Field (don’t have to mention the details).

I’m still confident we’ll win the division. But we’ve got to get some production out of Glaus/Lee/Freeman.

We need to salvage the final game of this series and beat the Cards at home (last time I heard Albert Pujols was struggling a bit lately, must keep it that way, and Holliday’s not struggling) and then take care of the Nats and Mets before facing the Phillies.

Go Braves!

Wow it amazes me how everyone is jumping ship. The are in a down stretch that’s all there is to it. All teams go through it. This is why the season is 162 games long. We have 20+ games to go…that is a lot of games. We win the next two and Philly loses two then we are talking about a 2.5 game lead. That’s how quick things can change in baseball. I personally am loving this race for the east much better than the years we had a 12 game lead and ran away with the division. Have faith the bats will get hot again. I’d rather be cold in the games against the pirates Than i would be against the Philly series. Again show patience the season is full of ebbs and flows.

For the life of me, I fail to understand why BC continues to throw these games away?

How many more games is he going to NOT pinch hit late in a game with runners on?

Matty D. against a RH pitcher in the 7th yesterday with runners on and lefties on the bench?
McOut against a LH pitcher in the 7th two days ago with runners on and righties on the bench?
And DLEE tonight in the same position?

Good Lord. Unreal.

That’s part of September call ups. You have more that enough replacements on the bench, Use them!

And one last thing. Please keep McOut and his .166 average on the bench for the rest of the season. Please?

With this team, we should be platooning nearly EVERY position EVERY day. The only exceptions IMHO would be Prado, Infante, Heyward and MaCC. Everyone else should be righty/lefty platoon. Period. Including AGon.

What says you?

I wish Bobby would shake up the line-up a bit (I’m not a huge fan of Prado batting third), but what do I know? The Braves offense has been horrible on the road lately though, but yet so many of these road games the Braves could have still won if it wasn’t for some bad defense and just plain bad luck (like McLouth getting robbed of that grand slam). It’s unfortunate the Braves have struggled when the Phillies have started winning, but I think we’ll end this little 3 game skid, get on nice winning streak, and be back in first before you know it, starting tomorrow!

Hate to see Huddy get down on himself for making 2 bad pitches that “cost us the game.” The guy goes out there with a quality start every time and gets no run support. The pretender Braves are done. This cillection of losers have spit it out against the worst team in baseball. one run in 18 innings, with the playoffs on the line. Hey, Matty D., how’s that confidence doing in second place? Apparently Matty has taken over for Pollyanna Bobby. Look at the guys Frank brought in to “HELP”…Lee-the -Loser, and Queen Ann Kiel. The first is a has-been, the second is a never-was. Queen Ann hits like he used to pitch. KK has also proved a great addition. Brian McCann will do his “tip your hat” to the other team…in this case the worst in the MLB. Again, “tip your cap” means that you couldn’t get the job done. Your opposition could. This team is a 1 to 8 collection of CHOKERS. That’s pretty simple. They are what they are. The Phillies, like last night, find a way to win. The Braves CHOKE. The Braves run in first place was bound to end this way, because it’s the make-up of the team. The rest of the season, Brian and the rest of Bobby’s bozos will “tip their cap” to the rest of their opponents, and then go home with their big money, and make excuses for their collapse.

It’s April in September and the great chemistry we had is gone. Trades have not panned out. Blanco is still the best CF among the group he found a way to win. I’m so very tired of Bobby Cox and others on the team saying that the team is based on hitting and defense. Bobby still manages like it’s 1991-2005. Hudson, Hanson & JJ aren’t Glavine Smoltz & Maddux. Those guys were special. Plus, the Braves defense is NOWHERE near the teams on that wonderful streak. A five year old would play the outfield better than Cabrera. Gonzo, and Infante and Prado have had their moments. Bobby HAS NEVER CARED ABOUT OFFENSE. He’s only had one hitting coach worth paying a salary to, and that is DON BAYLOR.
The offense stinks. Why Lee continues to play is beyond me. But Cox is going to snatch the playoffs from the team because he doesn’t want to put the players on the field with the best chance of winning. He’s bent on playing Lee no matter what. I think that Lee’s back is still bothering him. He hasn’t hit jack since the cortisone shot. He was on a streak before he tweaked his back, now, a corpse could have a higher batting average than Lee. For gosh sakes, PUT FF AT FIRST! This teams needs offense, and he can provide it.
The Braves need to wake up and start playing better, and hitting better. The Giants are only 1 game back in the Wild Card standings. Otherwise, another year without playoffs in Atlanta.

I have a sick pit in my the middle of my stomach this morning. However, there’s a lot of season left this month. A half-game deficit is not bad, and I had a feeling that this could happen. Now…the Braves just have to get a grip and get back to how they had been playing, IF they want to win this thing. The six games head-to-head with the Phillies can change everything — either way. But…here the Braves have lost another road series. What is it with road games this season? Just a couple of seasons ago, they couldn’t win at home but were phenomenal on the road. Good teams find a way to win on the road and at home. I certainly our Braves are good enough to work this out. I think they are. But do they think they are? That is the question.

Tami

September 8th, 2010
7:57 am

I’m with GMCK….Ankiel has of late been a rally killer. There’s was speculation in the postgame show that Bobby might shake things up for the rubber game today and put the kids in to play. Well…why didn’t he do that last night??!!!! The team needed to find a way to protect the precarious 1/2-game lead, and it wasn’t done. So NOW he might be persuaded to put the kids in? Well, I guess so as to make sure that the lead in the East for the Phillies doesn’t turn into 1 1/2 games, he better do something radical. And, keep McLouth out of the starting lineup while we’re at it!!! Melky’s bat is much better.

These guys have been doing this all year. They’re hot together and slump together. Right now, over half the lineup can’t square up a pitch. Lee took 2 flat fastballs right down the middle with the bases loaded. AGonzalez had pitches to hit every time and popped all of them up. There’s no reason for any team to pitch to McCann right now, so this season, like we’ve said all year, will come down to the ability for Glaus or Lee to drive in runs.

The Braves have too many weak spots to win even if they get into the playoffs. No speed, poor defense and a lack of team power. Pitching along with McCann, Heyward, Prado and Infanti are the core of this team offensively and defensively. Lee has not helped to this point. That leaves four positions that are not at the level to be compeititive. The other guys are support players. The Pirates, Marlins and the Rockies make the Braves look archaic. The Phillies, Giants, Padres, Cardinals and the Reds make them look inferior. They look lethargic on the road. You cannot keep depending on miracle finishes to win at home. It is what it is.

Anybody notice that we’re 11/2 games from being on the outside looking in? Now, we’re being chased by the Giants. We were sitting pretty 2 or 3 weeks ago with a big lead in the division and the wild card. The big letdown happened in the 4th game of the Met series. We thought we could turn the faucet on when we wanted to. Now, that we’re playing with 4200 players, there’s no set lineup and no consistency. September call ups create this problem. “This guy hasn’t played so let’s get him a few at bats (McLouth) or innings (KK).” Why can’t Heyward get back to the fence on long fly balls? Anybody see Brooks Conrad? It seems like the midseason changes (Ankiel, Gonzo, and Lee) haven’t panned out. The team is playing worse than before the trades.

Mark Duncan

I still think the Braves win the division, but they need a fire lit under them now. I also am in total agreement with those who are sick of “I tip my cap to them” When a Pete Rose team would get shut out he would say the winning pitcher was “lucky” and then go whip that team the next day.
This is the attitude the Braves must have to not only win the division but the Series as well.

Past few nights have been rough. Even for me…Mr. Optimistic. This whole situation reminds me of that line from Rocky II when Rocky approaches Mick to continue to manage him. Allow me to paraphrase…

Mickey: [after slapping Rocky in the face] Now you didn’t even see that comin’, did ya? And that’s comin’ from a broken down pug like me. What… what do ya think the champ would do to ya? Rocky: Hurt me bad I guess…
Mickey: Na, he’d hurt ya permanent. Permanent!

See any parallels? If the Pirates can shut out the Braves, what do you think the Cards and Phils are gonna do?

When one third of your lineup, i.e. Ankiel, Mclouth, amd Lee, plus a pitcher cannot get a hit, it is hard to score runs. Add to that that Martin seems to be in a bit of a slump and you have no chance at all. Freeman on first, Diaz and Conrad with more play time. Sit Ankiel and McLouth forever and bring in a real field manager! Can’t wait until next year without Bobby!

How can you not hit pitcher’s that have ERA’s over 6.00? If you can’t put runs up against the teams you should beat, then you don’t deserve to be in 1st place!

Well, it’s a good thing that the negative nellies who post on here don’t play for or manage the team because if they did the season would be already over with a 1/2 game deficit and 23 games to play since they have already thrown in the towel. Fortunately, none of these losers play or manage and thus the team still has a chance.

I am as frustrated as all of the rest of you by the last two games in particular, but Cox is absolutely right about struggling against pitchers they haven’t seen before. Most teams have problems against pitchers they haven’t seen before, but the Braves have managed to turn this art into a science. I have said for years if you want to beat the Braves, just send out a pitcher they have never seen regardless of how poorly he pitched against other teams or in the minors and they immediately make the guy look like Bob Feller or Sandy Koufax.

P.S. For the poster who said that the Braves have all kinds of video on these pitchers and thus should be able to hit them; you can look at all the video in the world, but you actually have to go out and face a pitcher live to see what his stuff does.

I agree with your post Stew….I think the Braves might have made 1 or 2 trades to many and messed the mojo of this team…I think the chemistry would have been better if they would have played Blanco in center while Nate was down, and let Freeman play first while Glaus was out.

Although the Braves have 13 of 23 remaining games at home while the Phillies have 15 of 22 on the road, I believe the schedule favors the Phillies. First, the Braves have four games with St. Louis. Philadelphia plays entirely within the division. Second, unlike the Braves, the Phillies have a winning road record. As we all know, the Braves are a disaster on the road.

Also, facing Halliday, Hamels, and Oswalt is far more troublesome than facing Hudson and whomever happens to be next in the rotation at the time.

My God! What a horrible feeling this team has dished out to us. Losing a 6 game lead in our division since July and finally losing 1st place to a miserable bottom dwelling team is inexcusable. And one wonders why Atlanta does not fill the seats during a play off game. We know the usual ending to the story.

Two only thoughts and then back to the day job: With bases load, 1 out and DeeLee at the plate, why would we NOT EMPLOY a bunt/squeeze play instead of the predictable double play? The players want to do it, the fans love it and it makes the game more exciting and less predictable. I place blame on older players that don’t go to Batting Coach Terry Pendleton for help and I blame bench management for not taking chances. Huddy would have been good for eight full innings and game would have ended before the rain with a W for the Bravos.

It is TIME to let some of the older players sit with Bobby and allow Raw Dawg, Nate, Troy and others to start. We can’t lose anymore than we have.

Back to work ….

I love Bobby but come on, they are too pressing. Any dope can see that. I want the guys who play with fire out there tonight. And the guys who brung us to the dance. Forget these new plug ins. Martin is hurting so rest him. Play MattE, Brooksie, Glaus/Hinske. Mac, get fired up, you’re the de facto leader of this team now, lets hear some noise! I don’t want to hear the dreaded phrase, “Tip you cap” ANYMORE>Wake the he** up Braves!!!!

This is either the begining of the end, or a bad spell that will soon end, and haveing the Braves peak the last three weeks of the season. Theres no reason to believe that the latter is not the case. I do believe Bobby and Frank need to take a hard look a the stats, sice the allstar break and reevaluate who is getting the majority of the playing time right now. I believe that they may have actually hurt this team with all the moves they have made since the allstar break. Its not their fault they were trying for just the opposite, but numbers don’t lie and we don’t have allot of time left for the moves to start paying off. They need to go back to the primary team that got them this far. Hinske/Diaz in Left, Melky in Center and Glaus now rested, back at first as our everyday players for at least a week and see what happens. I believe now that the lead is gone, primarily surrendered under our “new guys” getting most of the playing time you have to throw in the towell on the new folks and give the team back to the guys that got us here for most of the season. This division is still very winnable, give them the opportunity before its too late. Then if it doesn’t work out nobodys second guessing in October.

Frank Wren is a lot to blame he did squat to help the team offensively, the pitching staff is getting killed, I did not or have not pitched a game since Little Leauge but you can not tell me that the lack of run production doesn’t make you “pressed” when you pitched 5 shutout innings, and oh so did the other guy. As a life long braves fan, I would love to think that this isn’t a fluke and our slippers havn’t came off but honestly we are a at best a third or fourth place team and with Bobby working his magic and the rotation we have and bull pen has kept us in the hunt.. heck i am just mad thanks for letting me vent i dont mean it goodness we are a first place team just go play like one..

Glaus needs to be placed back in this line up. DLEE is killing them right now. Having him as the #5 hitter is taking the bat out of BMAC’s hands. These teams are going to keep pitching around BMAC to get to him everytime. DLEE can not keep up with a fastball because of his back. PUT GLAUS BACK IN!!!!!!!!!!

you know what? im kinda glad the braves are in second place. maybe that’ll wake em up from this attitude that they just need to win at home and they’ll be fine. REAL playoff teams play every game like it matters, and obviously the braves don’t have that mentality. well; it’s the last month of the season, the phils caught ya, you got a crucial homestand then in a couple weeks you got the phils 6 more times. now im still keepin the faith that the braves will dig out their inner strength and intensity and finish strong. but yall gotta want that for yourselves. Thats all it comes down to: do you want it or not?

the worst part about the braves potentially not winning the division is that it was their ONLY chance of winning a championship. this team cannot beat ANYONE on the road. home field advantage throughout the playoffs is heir only chance.

The only thing that matters is what the standings are at the end of the season. Obviously, if the Braves’ offense continues to sputter over the last 23 games, we will not be in the playoffs. But a lot can happen between now and the end of the season. GO BRAVES! (And for the fair weather fans, just GO AWAY!)

Do you think that John, Frank, Bobby or anyone from Braves organization ever read these comments? Some of them are quite nasty and hateful … but some of them are really good and constructive. We still have our chances … but I think we need to play “out of the box.” Our run for the WILD CARD last year was great, out of the box and with a nothing to lose attitude, won games, fans and excitment. Change the line up, Bobby and give some bench time to the older players. There is still fire in the stomach to win … but it’s gonna show itself through Freeman, Troy, Matty and Brooks.

Finishing my break, now back to work …

Well, we knew they( the phillies) wouldnt go away. We either hit the ball better or we will fade into a 3 or 4 game deficit with all the pressure on the head to head series. If any braves players read this, John Kruk said we would never regain the lead. Thats a pretty strong statement having just lost the lead by a half game!! Come on guys, I mean I know Kruk is a phillie but thats pretty much an insult to a good team!!! Let’s go Bravos, you are a damn god team with it all on the line, go get a pennant for ole Bobby!!!! Everybody loves an underdog, and let’s face it, the Bravos are just that. NObody gives them a chance, haven’t all season. They held the lead for an unbelievably long time, now they have to prove they are worthy of it again. Go Bravos!
