Lowe has bone chip in elbow, says he’ll pitch through it

MIAMI – An MRI on Derek Lowe’s sore elbow showed no ligament or tendon damage, but a bone chip that’s become lodged in the joint.  The Braves veteran believes he can pitch through the discomfort.

Lowe, who missed his regular rotation turn Friday against the Florida Marlins, said he plans to make his next scheduled start Wednesday against Pittsburgh.

“Right now there’s really nothing you can do [about the bone chip],” said Lowe, who doesn’t know if he’ll need surgery to remove the chip after the season.

He said he’s been assured it won’t do further damage pitching with it. He had a cortisone shot – the first of his career – after his painful three-inning performance Sunday against Florida.

He will throw Saturday to test the elbow for the first time since Sunday, but Lowe doesn’t anticipate it keeping him out of the rotation.

“You have to [pitch],” said Lowe, 37, who has a reputation for durability and has never been on the disabled list in his major league career. “There’s nothing you can do. It can’t get worse.”

Lowe said he’s had the bone chip for a long time, but that it floated around the elbow and hadn’t caused problems until a month or so ago. He had an X-ray at that point, which showed the bone chip.

When the pain worsened in his last start, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exam was done to show the bone and surrounding tissue in greater detail.

Lowe said the MRI showed the chip had become wedged in a crevice in the elbow, causing some swelling in tissue around it.

“It’s right here [points to the underside of right elbow],” he said. “It’s the weirdest thing. I don’t know what it is; I’m awful using all those big words. Basically it’s like there’s a little hole and the thing is literally stuck right in the hole.

“There’s nothing you can do about it [at this point of the season].”

Lowe said he and the Braves wanted to be sure he couldn’t do further damage by pitching with the chip and possible having it scrape against and damage a ligament.

“That’s what I wanted to be sure about,” he said. “Just got to deal with it. The biggest thing is you know that, like your triceps tendon sits back here, and you want to make sure you haven’t torn something.

“So now, since you know what it is, you just try to get down the swelling as much as you can in that area.”

Kawakami should be arrested for grand larceny. He’s a total bust and with the extra guys on the expanded roster and being in a pennant race there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to ever let that dude take the mound for the Braves ever again.

It is official. Atlanta is LOSERVILLE. How in the Hell do U let this guy pitch when U are in the middle of a pennant race???? And they will probably let him pitch again.

I love Atlanta and all the teams, but its really hard to root for the teams when there is NO sense of urgency when it comes to management. This city has one…ONE, (1), UNO, championship in some 40 years!

People, any of U if U had the chance to mange the Braves…would U have pitched KK at this time of the season?? Im pretty sure NOT!

Those of you who trash KK obviously know nothing about pitching. You don’t shut a guy down for 7 weeks in the middle of the season and expect anything from him. Especially a guy who relies on changing speeds and location. The guy threw a 2 hitter his last start. We hedged our bets that we wouldn’t need him and lost.

I wish Wren or someone could override Bobby’s decision next time, when he decides KK is a good option for a Braves win. My daughter is 8 and loves to watch the Braves with me. She asked before the game(regarding KK), “Isn’t that the guy who loses every time?” My God, if my 8 year-old daughter knows not to pitch him, shouldn’t Cox be able to figure it out? We WILL win more games without Bobby. The last “skipper” who was as bad at directing things was on Gilligan’s Island.

I pitched until I was 21 and never had a losing record I was a control pitcher and when I watch Kawakami pitch I ask how in the hell does a inept pitcher like him with over a 4.00 ERA in the major’s with a 1and 9 record and a 4.3 ERA without a win in the minor’s get the right to pitch such a critical game.

The braves have at least 3 starters in the minors that did a great job this year. They not only deserved this start ahead of Kawakami but they earned it . I know a lot of people rave about Cox being a player coach but when other pitchers have proven themselves over and over where is that player coach in cox then. Also I think Lee has been given enough time to prove he can help with the bat that moving him to 7th or 8th bat would be justified without insulting him . He is still a golden glove in the field but his bat sux. Cox stop living in the past with Lee and accept that he can not cut it any longer with the bat.

It amazes me KK only has an ERA in the fours. He has no control at all and average velocity. Surely we have someone else in minors that could get us a start or two until Lowe gets back. Of course I knew going into tonight we needed to score some runs and that Miller guy was pitching who was just as bad. Then Braves go out and get handcuffed like they were facing Cy Young. After watching Utley and Howard hit bombs last night at Colorado and then Atlanta hit, we just do not have any guys that can get Bobby his 3 run homer. Chipper was average for most of year but at least he got on base and did not strikeout all the time. We have replaced him with Ankiel and D Lee who cannot move runners or walk. Marlins and Nats are like cockroaches. Can’t kill them. They have those pitchers Braves can’t hit and still have games with them to go. Livan Hernandez, Scott Olson, Miller, J Johnson. Going to be tough road.

Cooper (10:04) well said. Was anybody honestly surprised by tonight’s outcome? We need JJ to dig deep tomorrow night against a very tough mound opponent. The good news is if Lowe can’t come back, that fifth spot in the rotation can be skipped two or three times this month.

Bring Beachy up from Gwinnett and let him start instead of Lowe or KK. Beachy 6 IP 0 ER tonight. 2.20 ERA. The young guys are doing better than the vets anyway. Marek better than Proctor. Dunn 2 more scoreless innings. Get Martinez back up on Sept 6. Canizares is raking at .345 with 13 HR. Let him alternate at 1B with Freeman. Lee and Glaus both suck.

I mean, it’s not that you lost to a guy who’s Double A record this year was 1-8 with an ERA over 6.00

Oh wait

Uh….you did

Listen sportsfans, you know that I know that you know that it’s been mostly smoke and mirrors this year. Yeah, you’ve had some decent starting pitching but beyond that………….

That the Phillies have been in a season long offensive slump more than anything explains why you’ve been in 1st place since May. But now it’s the Phillies with the pitching. Which is why they won three games in a row this week and got a total of eight hits in those three games.

Of course, this won’t work in the playoffs – but – you guys may not have to worry about that.

Phillistein: Beyond “the Roys” your beloved Phils have spotty starting pitching. I happen to think Roy Halladay is the best starting pitcher in MLB. But Cole “Slaw” Hamels is on one day, off the next, Blanton is average, and your KK (Kyle Kendrick) is terribly inconsistent. I’d mention your bull pen if you had one. Your line up – when healthy- is one of the best in baseball. I’m glad the Braves and Phils will be battling down to the wire – the ups and downs are what makes it fun. But remember, cheese steak breath, the only standings that count are the ones at the end of the season.

Lawdy, people. They lose a couple games and suddenly Bobby and Frank are idiots. Notice how the Braves are still in first place?

Ya have a pitcher on the payroll who has thrown fairly decently (sometimes) but without any run support in most of his games. You sit him and then you send him down; where he looks fairly decent. Ya gotta give him a start. It’s the stretch run and ya gotta check out your players.

However, now that he’s proven he can’t pitch, it’s time to sit him again and move on.

Lowe hasn’t been so hot. A bone chip and sore elbow don’t seem too reassuring. But, ya still gotta give him his next start.

Back to KK; he lost the game on his own. But the team scoring one and committing too many errors is….well, it aint good.

Gotta trust that they’ll come around today. Go Braves!
