A side note: To all you modern rock listeners. A new album hits stores tomorrow by some friends of mine in a band called 10 Years. It’s titled “Feeding The Wolves”, you can listen to the album on their website. http://www.10yearsmusic.com It’s a major label band, not some back yard project. You may have heard their new single “Shoot It Out” on the radio on Project 961, or their old song “Wasteland”. Anyways, they are some good friends of mine, so if you get a chance, check them out. Thanks.

didn’t KJ ruin his arm, or have Tommy John surgery that ended his outfield career?

Yes he had surgery. I don’t think that prohibits him from playing there. I think it is largely that he has not played there in quite some time. And I believe he was move to the infield, partly for the arm but more so to keep his bat in the lineup and replace Marcus “Where’s my juice?” Giles.

Nice article – I’m surprised he is consdiered a patient hitter like Heyward is OBP this year is only 60 points higher than his average, while Heywards in the majors this year is 100+ points higher.

On the Johnson V. Prado debate.
I don’t have a problem with Johnson – though I think Prado has played better this year. Honestly the one moment I remember most of Johnson’s tenure with the Braves was the pop fly that he dropped against the Phillies with 2 outs in the Ninth that cost us the game, and to me was a real turning point in the season. Had we won we would have only been 2 games back, with two more to go in the series. Instead we lose that game, and don’t play well the next two to put us roughly 6 games out.

Also this is Johnson’s best year in his career. He was almost as good in 2007, decent in 2008, but his performance dipped considerably last year. From 07-09 when he was the starting 2nd baseman for the Braves his OPS at Turner field was like .778. He is still a very streaky hitter, which frusterates me as a fan. Prado has been consistent since he took over the starting job. Johnson was also never elected to an all star game.

Right, chili, “pretty good,” even with a handfull of Hall of Famers. But not “the best” by any stretch. But, I know we all have opinions.

I will submit, though, that Bobby’s teams were mostly clean of PEDs, while most of the teams the Braves were facing were all “roided up.” The Yankees pitchers and hitters form that era were all (except Jeter) have been implicated, Minnesota, Toronto, Arizona, Florida, Houston, and St Louis all all were teams the Braves faced who had multiple players linked to PED purchases or uses.

Joey. Just saying that people – many Braves fans especially – lose perspective on Cox’s career because of the 1 out of 14.
They concentrate SO much on the 1. And they just discount the 14. As if it doesn’t even matter.

LaRussa has had as many HOFers as Cox … and he’s well behind him in playoff appearances. Also, if not for a fluke year in which he won like 85 games in the regular season and THEN won the World Series (credit deserved for sure, but he also didn’t do a ‘great’ job at all during the regular season – won the central by default really) … he and Cox would be tied. At 1.

I don’t know. I’m as ticked as anyone about 91, 92 and 96 (99 we didnt stand much of a chance) … but I also give someone credit for getting to the postseason 14 straight times. Pretty remarkable.

We might some some additional bullpen arms called up, and probably a 3rd catcher, but I doubt Bobby will want to bring up too many players in September. He generally limits September callups because he doesn’t like having a bench full of guys who likely won’t play. This year there will be more than most due to the number of veterans that are currently at AAA (Glaus, McLouth, and until today KK).

Anyone who makes favorable comparisons between Kelly Johnson and Martin Prado is only looking at stats. If you had watched the two players on the field the last few years, it is obvious who the superior baseball player is. Clearly, at least to anyone who understands the game of baseball, it is Prado no matter how you slice it. As far as Johnson being a better option than Melky as an outfielder for this team, no. Melky can play all 3 OF positions and understands his role on the team.

Kelly Johnson was one of the players that current Braves have alluded to as being one of the players from last year “who did not want to be here”. It is one of the things that comes up occasionally when players are asked about the success of the team this year. Johnson did not fit in here last year and he would not have fit in here this year.

Try to gain an appreciation for the game of baseball rather than just looking at a bunch of stats. This is REAL baseball, not fantasy league or Strat-o-Matic. There is a whole lot more that goes into judging talent and player roles than just the numbers on a stat sheet.

If ANYONE else in the world of REAL baseball thought Johnson was worth much, he would have landed in a better spot for more money than where he is now. The Braves gave him a fair shot to prove himself. He failed here. They moved on. Nothing lost.

Anyone think there might be something going on with Lowe’s arm? The reports yesterday are that he was shaking it a lot while on the mound, and his quotes from DOB sounded very cryptic and weird. The way he’s pitching I don’t think it’d be the worst thing in the world if he did need to be disabled for some period of time, since Kawakami should be able to at least replicate what Lowe has done his past few starts. And while I don’t wish any injury upon him, if Lowe is hurt that opens up the #4 playoff rotation spot for Minor, which I think would be a better option regardless, but assume that Bobby will err toward the side of the veteran.

Jon Greenville

Ted

Heard the guys on 680 today talking about how Lowe just looks used up and done. Cant throw hard, has no command, and never goes deep into games anymore. A “good start” for Lowe now is him lasting 6 innings and allowing 3 or 4 runs, when that would be pretty bad for anyone else in the rotation.

At least the Prosebleed blog isnt afraid to say it-

“We can’t afford to ignore this situation any longer. It was annoying at first, then it got to be frustrating, now it is just sad. This guy is honestly going to ruin our season if we keep trotting him out there every 5th day. I know he costs a fortune, and the Braves don’t want that to go to waste, but at some point you have to just realize your mistake, eat it, and make an assertive decision to do what’s best for the team. Right now, any other option we have is better than Lowe.”

in case you didn’t see the tweets: Braves made a roster move today, sending Cristhian Martinez back to Gwinnett and calling up Kenshin Kawakami. Since Martinez went four innings yesterday, this allows them to have another long man in place, ready to go right away.

Derek Lowe didn’t want to talk about what’s bothering him again, but he had an ice pack on his right elbow. He said he would talk to us after he tests things out with a bullpen session tomorrow. So not sure that it’s anything serious but there’s something nagging him for sure.

Peter Moylan said today he received a cortisone shot on Friday and took off the weekend. He said he’s feeling better and ready to go but wasn’t sure if the Braves were ready to give him the green light yet. might explain why they decided to call on Craig Kimbrel for a couple of days.
