Braves’ quotes after Monday loss to Rockies

BOBBY COX

“He’s swinging better than he was, that’s for sure. His back’s gotten better, I guess. But they’ve got a lot of hitters who can do a lot of damage.”

On Hudson, didn’t pitch badly

“No. Two-run homer by [Stewart]. He made a mistake, he got it up high in the zone.”

“We hit the ball good, we made good plays, we did everything pretty darn good. We just didn’t win a game.”

On Helton

“I haven’t seen him for so long. [That performance] reminded me of what he used to be.”

“We had a lot of opportunities to run the score up pretty good, but just couldn’t get ‘em all at the right time.”

On the play at second base

“It looked like he was out from the bench. I couldn’t tell what happened.”

BRIAN McCANN

“Stewart kept swinging over the sinker down. He thought it’d be a good chance to elevate. I think he wanted it 2, 3 or 4 more inches up. [But] I thought Huddy pitched good.”

“We played a good game. I mean … just one of those games, I guess.”

On the Venters pitch to Helton

“We were going sinker in. He kept his hands in nice, did the only thing he could do with it – hit it right up the middle. Tip your hat to him. That’s a 96 mile-an-hour sinker that was down. We were going for a double play there.

“Todd Helton — check the numbers. He puts together great at-bats all the time. We knew that coming in. He’s a guy that can swing the bat, on any given night he can do what he did tonight.”

TIM HUDSON

On Helton

“He had a good night, had some good at-bats. He some hits, got some runs, got some offense going for them. And we just came up a little short.”

On the Stewart homer

“I tried to elevate a fastball, change his eye level. It just wasn’t quite as high as I wanted it. I didn’t think it was getting out of there at first. I was upset that I thought it was going to be deep enough to score the run [as a sacrifice fly], but it just kept going. Typical Coors Field homer. You just got to tip your hat to him. It was a pretty good fastball, a little above the belt, and he was able to get to it.”

“I had just thrown him so many sinkers down in the zone, I just thought at some point I needed to change his eye level. It just wasn’t high enough.”

On Coors Field

“This isn’t an easy place to come and pitch, for anybody. I felt like I threw the ball pretty good tonight. They come in here and feel like they’re going to get some offense going. Anybody does. It’s a huge outfield, the ball carries, it’s just not real conducive to pitching. At the same time, they have to deal with it the same way we do.

“I felt like we should have won the game, even though we didn’t. I felt like if you take away that homer, just hit a sac fly there, it’s a tie ballgame late. Just didn’t make the pitch I wanted to.”

Man, what’s up with McCann? Does he need new contacts or something? Hope he snaps out of his slump soon.

Hudson needs to shave the beard. No wins since he grew it. Bad Luck Beard!

Terrible blown call on the not-stolen base there near the end. Guy was out by at least 8 inches! Need some replay in baseball, not on balls and strikes, but everything else, baseball was made for replay.

Bad call @ second. Inability to score early bites us again. Hitters putting too much pressure on the pitchers.

McCann struggles. Lee (early on) isn’t much of an upgrade from Glaus (offensively) It’s hard to win games when you get guys on, and the 4 & 5 hitters are doing nothing but strike out. Derreck Lee’s productive days are pretty much behind him. His trade was a nice thought, but is hasn’t added much. Melky is amazing. He seems to start many at bats with strike 1 and strike 2; then he’ll hack at anything within the confines of the stadium. He has the approach of a Little Leaguer.
Add to that, a bad call by an umpire out of position to make a correct call. If he gets it right, we’re good. He didn’t. He blew the call. It contributed to a loss. I’m sure he’ll manitain he got it right. Most umpires have a Bruce Freming philosophy of infallability. I see this Colorado trip as a disaster, and an end to 1st place.

Agree Tim needs a shave, Melky gets into streaks where he’ll swing if the pitch is thrown period, McCann needs a rest and Lee needs to relax as bit, it looked to me like he was pressing early.
You have tip your hat to Helton who saw his life flash before his eyes when that heater scorched his beard then took a nasty sinker up the middle for the RBI. Betancort’s fastball was unhittable until he did whatever he did to himself and started throwing sliders allowing us to get on and tie.
We missed a good chance last night when the Astros continued to jinx the Phils. Norris and Hamels tonight; I hope Norris has the game of his life and Hamels is wild in the zone,
Go Bravos!

Off subject, but sports radio in South Florida is all over the Marlins for giving away fan favorite Cody Ross for NOTHING. Fans are furious here. Our ownership is not ideal, but it is far superior to that of the Marlins. I can’t imagine being a fan of this franchise.

An other one run loss. A Braves specialty. Blanton pitched a good game for the Sillies and got nothing. Phillies do not lose many one run games. The Braves must bounce back tonight.

I hate that Ed Rapuano got that call wrong, as Rapuano is one of those umps I like. (Unfortunately he was screened by Infante and out of position to make the call, but it was still his job to make it.)

If it were Bill Hohn I’d be uttering invective at our favorite arrogant, incompetent Braves hater, but as for Rapuano, well, nobody’s perfect. Hate that that call might have cost us the game, though, on a night we could have widened the lead.

A DRIVEN GM

The Braves could have and should have traded for LaRoche instead of Lee, based on Adam’s clearly superior numbers this year.

But there seems to be something driving Wren to make trades that are not based on long term substance, but rather short term results. He also seems to be driven to always DO SOMETHING as the Braves GM.

The Braves would be better off now if they had just kept their team intact this year, and if they would have resigned LaRoche instead of Glaus.

Escobar has rebounded for Toronto (and was clearly the Braves most clutch player last year). Blanco is playing well for KC (while hitting with a much higher average than Ankiel). And LaRoche has been solid for Arizona the entire year.

But Wren can’t seem to be satisfied with just putting a winning club on the field. He seems to be driven to make changes — so as to somehow prove HIMSELF as the GM.

the braves have put entirely too much pressure on their bullpen with all this late inning bs. It’s exciting, we love it when they win, but sometimes even Venters is going to give up a run.

Walk the edge long enough, you’re going to fall off. Truthfully — 9 hits strung out over 9 innings might never generate any runs, but 9 hits over the last 3 innings just might, and that’s how they’ve been surviving. But late inning heroics are never eternal. Be prepared for the jolt. And the possible decline south of the Phillies.

Chipper’s gone, Medlen is gone, Lee still hasn’t joined the Braves, Prado seems to be heading south, and McCan’t just hasn’t lately. Perhaps his eyes are truly giving him more problems than he’s willing to talk about.

Quite likely this patient team with all their walks just may change from discriminating batters to flailing hackers at the plate. We’re already seeing signs of that.

Can someone tell me the wisdom behind Wren’s choice of Lee??? This guy could not hit a baseball if it was the size of a Beach Ball. And they actually pay big bucks for Wren’s stupid decisions.

Frustrating team to follow!!!!

Some of you folks are amusing, a player goes through a slump and it is as if they should be benched or traded. Please remember it is difficult to hit that fast ball that is moving and when you are so close to a pitcher on a mound. That is why going 3 of 10 (.300) is excellent. Remember also that hitting is only one part of the game, do not forget the defensive contributions of the players that did not get a hit.

Jesse Stone

August 24th, 2010

Yes, I will tell you about the wisdom of choosing Derek Lee. He is a very good fielder at first base. The acquisition of Lee will lower the number of unearned runs given up by the Braves. As recently as last season, Lee hit over 30 HR and drove in well over 100 runs. Most baseball fans know that Lee is a very nice upgrade over Troy Glaus and he cost us very little in return.
To those of you saying we should have just re-signed LaRoche: He was not going to sign here for one year. If we would’ve signed him long term, Freeman would be blocked.

Lee is a total washout – what is it, one hit in the last 20 or so at bats, with a majority of them strikeouts? Time to bench him and put Hinske back on first. Or how about try Prado at first and put Conrad on third? Can’t get to the postseason with duds in the lineup.

Jerry L- I was against the signing of Glaus from the beginning, but I wouldnot be telling the truth if I told you I expected Glaus to do as well as he did in May. I was very unhappy with Wren when he promised the fans a big bat in the offseason and all he landed was Glaus. That was like fishing for a largemouth and reeling in a boot. How can you say Lee was a mistake? He has had a grand total of 15 ABs. I’m sure even Pujols has gone through a 2 for 15 stretch.
