BOBBY COX
“We hit a lot of balls pretty good today, yeah.”
“I think some of the talk should go about Mike Minor. I thought he was just outstanding. I think he’s pitched good in every start he’s had. He had the most strikeouts today, had that curveball working really great. Pumped a lot of strikes. A lot of pitches, but when you strike out guys you’re going to build pitch counts. That’s what happened to him today. But he was pretty much dominating today.”
on Omar’s continued hot streak
“Not only hitting, his defense is unbelievable. He and Gonzalez are just about as good as you ever want to see [on left side of infield]. They’re fun to watch.”
Was wind blowing out
“It didn’t hurt the ball to right much, but Infante hit his pretty good. The hardest one hit today was Ramirez’s ball – whoa, he smoked it. The ball was still going, as long as you didn’t get it up real high.”
On Minor having a good idea how to pitch
“Minor’s got a great idea how to pitch. And we knew that when we drafted him, I was told. And he does. We could see it in the spring and obviously during his minor league stint this season he did the same thing – move the ball in and out, change speeds. [Hitters] can’t guess with him.”
Surprised by the strikeouts
“No, he had them in the minors. Because he can get guys to chase up [in the zone], which he didn’t do today. Today he had that great changeup and the super curveball. And he was hitting 93 [mph] with almost every [fastball] today. When you’re throwing that way, then pounding the strike zone, and you have a curveball and changeup like he has, they’re going to swing at it. They can’t help it.”
On talking to Lou Piniella before game
“I saw Lou prior to our little [moment] at home plate giving out the lineup cards. It was pretty emotional. I hate to see Lou leave baseball, but maybe … we’ll see what happens. But I know his mom is really, really sick, and he needs to get home.”
MIKE MINOR
“It was pretty fun. At the end it was a little bit of a blowout, but at the beginning it was a good game. It was going back and forth and I really didn’t know what was going to happen, because the home run was big for them, when Aramis hit that bomb. But other than that, I kind of bounced back pretty good and kind of went to being a thumber there – I didn’t throw many fastballs, and I threw a lot of changeups and curveballs.”
on today’s pitch repertoire compared to what he used in his first two starts
“In those two I was going mainly with the fastball and working off that. But today [the fastball] was kind of cutting a little bit and I wasn’t hitting any spots. If I was trying to go away it was cutting over the middle of the plate, and if I was going in it was cutting in off the plate.
“So I kind of went changeup and curveball, and then mixed in the fastball.”
Surprised to get 12 strikeouts on a day like that?
“Yeah. I mean, third big-league start, against a team like that; they’re still a good team. I just kind of mixed it up a little bit, and I had McCann back there helping me out.”
Did you feel as dominant as you looked?
“I fell behind a lot, but today I could throw my changeup whenever I wanted. I threw a couple of 3-2 changeups, and then I throw a couple of late curveballs. The fastball was just everywhere. I didn’t feel like I was that dominant besides when I went to my off-speed [pitches].”
“I usually pound the fastball in and away, back and forth. And today, after Ramirez hit that home run – it was over the middle of the plate, a cookie for him – after that I called Mac out there and said we need to mix in the changeup and curveball more, because the fastball’s just not cutting it tonight.”
Ever have a 12-strikeout game?
“High school, all the time. But there was no talent” [like he's facing now]
On getting win to take series
“It feels good just to get a win. Omar coming out today was real big, and Heyward. Everybody was hitting today. Hopefully we can stay hot.”
TERRY PENDLETON
On first two guys having 8 hits, 4 homers, 8 RBI, 8 runs
“That’s how you’re going to win, when guys up front are getting after it. But they’re doing it in big ways. They’re doing it like the 3-4-5 [hitters] should do it. When you can get that out of them, it can be something special. It relaxes and lifts the burden on the guys behind them anyway, helps those guys relax a little more and hopefully will help them swing the bat a little better, too.”
On Heyward
“He looked pretty good. It looks like he’s seeing some pitches and starting to turn on the ball the way we think he can turn on the ball. He’s getting some pitches he should turn on, and he’s turning on them. That’s what we’ve been looking for. His hand seems to be well and he seems to be able to get after it.”
OMAR INFANTE (with Prado translating)
“I’m happy first of all that we got the win. That’s a huge win for us, and I’m happy to be able to contribute for the team with Jay [Heyward] and get a lead for Minor to get that confidence…. We got the win, so everybody’s happy.”
Best run of his career, best game?
“With the Detroit I had a couple of games, but with the Braves this is the best I’ve had. I was looking for pitches and he threw those pitches. I hit them in the right spot, in the right moment, to give us a couple of runs.”
“Every time I hit, I’m just looking for pitches I can drive, to just them hard somewhere. Fortunately I got a couple of pitches up in the zone and I could just lift them and hit them out of the park. But it’s not like I was looking for pitches to hit out. I always have the approach to hit the ball the other way, and if he throws an inside pitch, just react. That’s the way I approach it.”
On Minor
“He looked real good. He located pitches, had good command of his changeup and slider. He can throw inside, outside, locate his pitches. The way he’s pitching, with that command, I think he’s going to be one of the tough pitchers for the Braves.”
MARTIN PRADO
On Minor
“The most important thing I like about him is, he throws strikes. We’re talking about 75-80 percent of the pitches he throws for strikes. That to me is one of the biggest things that our starting pitchers can have. Just throw strikes, don’t get behind in counts.
“He’s still young and he’s going to learn. It’s long process. But I’m seeing the same type of pitches that Glavine and a lot successful lefties have.”
BRIAN McCANN
On Minor
“After that home run, he had a better feel for his off-speed pitches than his fastball. He just made his pitches.”
On Minor realizing that and going to his off-speed pitches mid-game
“You know what? That’s why he got to the big leagues so quick, the fact that he can recognize that. He’s got three plus-pitches, and when one’s not there he can go with the oother ones. And that’s what he did today.”
Can you see why he was drafted as high as he was? (seventh overall pick)
“Absolutely. A guy like that, with that kind of poise and that kind of stuff, he looks good.”
On the rout
“Games like this, when we haven’t been swinging the bats well, to come out here and score – I don’t know how many we scored – you like days like this.”
On first two guys having 8 hits, 8 RBIs, 4 homers
“We had guys step up today and carry us. It was awesome.”
JASON HEYWARD
“The first ball I hit, I didn’t know if it was going to go because the wind was blowing.”
“Omar started it off great for us today, and we were able to keep it going.”
On Omar taking pressure off others
“It’s huge. We’ve been fortunate enough to have Martin doing that this year, then Omar swinging the bat really well.”
On Minor
“Awesome pitching effort. He went out there and battled and competed, and threw a lot of strikes.”
Best your hand’s felt in a while?
“It’s felt the same. It’s most definitely not 100 percent, but that’s what this game is about, going out there and finding a way to get it done.”
Then was it the best you’ve felt at plate in a while, your approach, swing?
“Four hits is the best I’ve done all year. That shows something. But like I said, Omar going out there and getting it started for us, putting up some good ABs to rough up the pitcher, definitely helps.”

Two homers, four hits, four RBI — and still the kid wants to deflect credit and talk about somebody else. Heyward has a lot more than baseball skills, he has character. Proud he’s on our team.

It was interesting to hear Jason during SportSouth interview – reporter asked him what did you have for breakfast (imply did you do something different) and Jason proceeded to tell him toast, eggs, bacon, OJ, like any other day … he was so straight foward in giving the answer … I like his “innocent” (smile)

You gotta love the fact that Minor has the poise and savvy of a veteran already in just 3 starts…Think about how many young pitchers on the road would get rattled after giving up a huge BOMB of a homerun and giving up the lead but this kid kept his cool and looked amazing…Thats the most dominant Ive seen of a braves rookie pitcher in a long time…Hell Ive seen Hanson this year get hit early on the road and get rattled and not be able to battle back and Minor did in just his 3rd start…Hes gonna be a bright spot for the Braves for years to come…Thank god Heyward busted it out today I think he needed a day like this where he just couldnt do anything wrong hopefully this will get him rolling again and he can start hittin up to his hype again like he did at the start of the year…We need Heyward to step up and get on base and bring guys home..If we can get hot like he was earlier in the year with the way Prado and Infante are raking then will not only be in the playoffs but will make some noise while were there…

If Minor keeps getting better and better and more comfortable and lets say Lowe starts to slump and doesnt look good the last month and change of the season and we make the playoffs…Does Bobby give Minor a chance to start a playoff game?? Im getting way ahead of myself because making the playoffs in general isnt gonna be easy and I dont think Minor will start a game in the playoffs but if he continues to look better each outing and Lowe still has that 4.5 era and only last 5 innings a game…Bobby might find himself with a little situation to think about thats all im saying…

See your point; but BC will go with Minor in that situation. As much as folks here hate on Charlie Liebrandt(sp?); he won 16-18 games for the Braves in ‘91; but BC had no qualms about starting his younger pitchers in the playoffs ahead of CL.

Keith Law was the ESPN quasi-scout who shouted from the rooftops that Minor was a reach, and that his fastball topped out at 88, and the Braves took him because he was cheap and signable, and on and on.
I think we can safely say Keith Law has NO idea what he is talking about. Lefty hitting 93 on the gun with two good secondary pitches and control of all three and a Vanderbilt education to boot?
It’s a crime shame we can’t unload Derek Lowe and just keep dropping guys we develop into the rotation at the rate of one a year.

How the Nats handle SSberg has me puzzled. When Avery, Smoltz & Glavine were coming up, Leo & BC never held them back; they felt the more innings the better. And though they suffered injuries later (most after Leo left or when Avery left the Braves); I can remember several articles in national publications about how amazing it was that the Braves staff remained injury-free while working so many innings, year-after-year. I agree with the commenter the other day who mentioned that TP is always blamed for the hitting woes; but Roger McDowell never gets enough credit for the excellent pitching.

LuisG: No it wasn’t a typo. Minor said “tonight,” but that happens all the time after day games. Guys are so used to playing night games, then when we’re talking to them they’re standing in a windowless clubhouse, so “tonight” just comes out instead of “today.” Just like the days all run together in baseball, when Sunday is no different than a day game on Wednesday, or Saturday night no different than Tuesday, and as a result you have players and coaches and the manager trying to remember what day it is (they say they do it all the time), and us writers turning in stories that say Tuesday when it’s actually Friday, or whatever. Fortunately we usually catch them, or an editor does, before they reach the paper, but it happens a lot.

Good to take two out of three at Chicago — as Bobby often says, if we keep taking two out of every three, we’ll be fine. I think this week might be challenging, though. Colorado is a very strong home team. We’ve got to have some hitting, because the Rocks are going to score in that park, even if our guys pitch well. Meanwhile, Philly has perhaps an easier task at Houston and could sweep. I must say that I am intrigued by the Halliday/Happ matchup later in the series. Happ might feel he has something to prove, and he’s a quality pitcher. Anyway, back to the Braves — I think Lee will be an asset, Gonzalez is stating to produce, Jason is showing some flair, Infante is just having an amazing year. Brian — relax a bit and let it happen. Ankiel — keep up the good work in the field and work on the swing a bit. If the Braves are where they are now ten days from now, I think it means that (barring injury) we’ll be fine.

@StanleyCrowe: The Braves are where they have been for nearly 3 months: first place. I think that already means we will be fine. There is absolutely no reason to believe that the Phillies are going to suddenly morph from a .560ish team into a .660ish team and pass us, especially considering that in their best season during their recent run they were .574 team. If the Phillies play at their best season pace they are going to fall well short of surpassing the Braves at our current pace. I think the Phillies have virtually zero chance of catching us, unless we absolutely collapse down the stretch (which does not seem at all likely considering how clutch this team has been all season).

I understand completely! I could quote several examples myself; maybe even Joey Devine. It’s just that not long ago the theory seemed to be to give a young pitcher as much work as possible, even leave him in to get shelled; just to give them experience. This is what the “Young Guns” did in the late ’80s before they became the premier pitching staff of the ’90s.
One of the most amazing “stats” (fact?) of all baseball is that the year (’69?) that Earl Weaver and the Orioles had four (4!) twenty-game winners (Palmer, Cuellar, McNally & ?) they carried only eight (8!) pitchers on their staff the entire year! Eight pitchers split 1400+ innings! Even given the four starters (NOT FIVE!) got 200 innings each, that leaves 600 innings to split between the four relievers!

Werth is a free agent and they won’t be able to afford him. He’s been a streaky hitter this year unlike the last two when he was really solid at the plate. Brown is their answer to Jason. I read somewhere – can’t remember the blog – that Werth’s club house presence since not being offered an extension has been less than it could be and that even at his best he was never a great team/clubhouse guy. I suspect he’ll end up in Boston if NY land Crawford; great tools but hitting this year has been streaky. Probably better than Bay and Holliday all around but the make up thing has some worried.
Like I said , just what I’ve read. I thought he would look great in left or center for us before all that started and yes there was talk he was available before Howard and Victorino went down. When that happened he had to stay

Dave, I heard it mentioned and it was the first time I’ve heard it, that Joe Torre is a possibility to replace Bobby. God please let it be so. Bring Joe home and let him continue the solid path that Bobby and management have put in place for the last 20 years. It would be good for Joe to get out of that cess pool of a Dodger organization and it would bring the stable hand to what has morphed into a young team set for another run here in Atlanta. I remember watching Joe behind the plate in Atlanta as a player and as manager and I hope we can see him end his managing career here in Atlanta where he could be appreciated.

Most of the tall pitchers were 1st basemen and others were cf’s or SS’s now they become specialized early. I think this helps more pitchers last longer and does not develop the strength in some. I have no clue but hard throwers arm go early and junk ballers( location pitchers) later… I have never really heard the science of the injury only theories about work load increases and injury……

Darren Dreifort never pitched 200 innings in a season. He never had more than 60 relief appearances in a season. He was not overused. Just had arm problems.

@Joshua
“There is absolutely no reason to believe that the Phillies are going to suddenly morph from a .560ish team into a .660ish team and pass us, especially considering that in their best season during their recent run they were .574 team.”
They’ve been a .574 team in the past because they’ve never been pushed. We’ll see how the Braves do in September….some teams fold, others don’t.

Why do people like throwing Steve Avery”s name in the mix with Glavine,Smoltz and Maddox? Avery only had 2 good years. You might as well talk about Denny Neagle or Charlie Leibrandt

Great game! Tough game for Lou to retire after. As long as Bobby can win the last game he manages this will be one of the best braves seasons ever!

I would love to see Joe Torre become the manager of the Braves. I also envision a great pitching
staff for years to come featuring youngsters Jurjens, Minor, Hanson, Teheran, and veteran Hudson.
Now if we can get a legitimate major league centerfielder, we should challenge for the division
championship every year. Also are Prado & Infante twins? They look and play so much alike.

MVP of the Braves– drumroll_——– Charlie Manuel. For waking up Bobby and showing him how great Omar is. If it weren’t for that goon reliever on the Rockies Manuel Corpas, we all would have seen Omar do this last year. He went down then with a 300 plus average. If there is anyway whatsoever we can get a hold of Manuel Corpas this week, please let us do it. Bean him, throw a bat at him, charge the mound, something. He ruined last year’s season knocking out Omar.
Second in MVP voting, Chipper Jones, for bowing out and letting Omar and Martin play at the same time.

You guys think this is a joke with Omar? He was hitting .349 before Manuel Corpas took him out last year. This is no surprise to those of us who can recognize talent. Payback is this week.

Here’s the deal…Torre can “come home” to Atlanta and L.A. gets Dun Sutton…even up!
Oh, wait…Vince just resigned for 1 more year.
