CHICAGO — When Billy Wagner notched his 30th save Friday, he also recorded his league-high 50th game finished, which vested a $6.5 million option on his contract for the 2011 season.
Doesn’t matter. Wagner, for the umpteenth time, reiterated Saturday that he’s done after this season. He hasn’t wavered on that since he announced it earlier this season, and says he won’t.
“I’m retiring,” the 38-year-old lefty said today as he prepped for the Braves’ afternoon game against the Cubs. “I don’t know how to say it in a politically correct way, that anybody’s going to believe me.

Look at this picuture and one can certainly see where Billy Wagner, at 38, would need a lot of ice packs to keep pitching like he has.
“Until I don’t show up next year, nobody’s going to believe me. Brett Favre’s f—ed it up for everybody.”
Wagner is a no-nonsense dude in every way. He answers questions much like he faces hitters – aggressively, without much subtlety. In this day and age, he’s refreshing to talk to.
He had two strikeouts in the ninth inning of Friday’s 5-3 win against the Cubs to give him 1,169 K’s for his career, matching Jesse Orosco for the most in history by a lefty reliever. Before he’s done this season, Wagner will put that record out of reach for quite some time.
But what people can’t seem to grasp is how anyone having the kind of season that Wagner is having — a 1.68 ERA, 30 saves, a .170 opponents’ average and 77 strikeouts with 15 walks in 53-2/3 innings – could walk away from the game.
Lefty hitters will certainly be glad he is, as they’re an absurd 3-for-41 (.073) with three walks and 19 strikeouts against him.
Wagner just shrugs and says, it’s time. He’s got a wife and four kids, three boys and a girl ages 12 and under, and he’s eager to join them on the family farm in Virginia and get on with the next phase of his life. The full-time dad phase.
“Me and my family have made plans for retirement,” he said. “I don’t need it anymore. I’m tired of the expectations, tired of the criticism, tired of people who never played trying to tell me how to play.
“And I enjoy my family, unlike [some others]. So I want to be there for them. I want to get to see them play ball, and be a dad.”
But in the meantime, don’t get the wrong impression – Wagner is having a blast with these Braves. He’s having one of the most enjoyable seasons he’s had in his career, and it’s working out just as he’d hoped, with him pitching effectively for a team with World Series aspirations, a team in first place in late August.
“I didn’t come into this season just to play it,” Wagner it. “I’ve played at a high level for my whole career, and I expect it. I don’t expect to suck. Even if I decided to play next year, I’m still not going to say, gee, it’s alright if a suck. I couldn’t live with that.”
He ranks fourth among NL relievers in ERA and second in the majors in strikeouts per nine innings (12.9). And in his past 40 appearances, Wagner has a 1.40 ERA and .156 opponents’ average, with 53 strikeouts and nine walks in 38-2/3 innings.
“Wags has been dynamite all season,” manager Bobby Cox said after Friday’s win. “He’s been just great.”
Again, said Wagner, “This is what I expected. I didn’t expect any different than coming in, being successful and helping the team win. But I still have, what, six weeks until the end of the season? A lot of things can happen in six weeks. I can’t sit here and say, I’ve had a great year. Because it’s not great yet.”
Wagner has had nine 30-save seasons and made nearly $93 million over 17 seasons while amassing 415 saves and pitching 887-1/3 innings for five teams in 837 games, all in relief.
He could top 450 saves and get his career earnings to nearly $100 million if he’d come back and pitch another season. But Wagner said that’s not happening. The money and climbing statistical charts aren’t important to him, not at this point of his career.

Wagner says he's headed to the family farm after this season. Retiring. Period.
Teammates including Peter Moylan have pleaded with him to come back, just for one more year.
“I know I could pitch another year or two,” Wagner said. “But I’m at the point where all the ice packs that it takes to get me on the field every day is not worth it any more.”
“[His kids] have travel baseball, we started that this year. Travel basketball. I have one that’s in Little League baseball and travel basketball. And my daughter’s in tap-jazz and hip-hop [dancing] and I like to see her do that. I enjoy it.”
Wagner said when the Braves were in New York recently, he heard a reporter there suggest that if the Braves offered him more money next year, he’d probably come back. That irked Wagner.
“You know what? I made a lot of money,” he said. “I never held a gun to anybody’s head that’s paid me. This game’s a great game, and I love it and I’ll miss it. But I won’t miss [comments like that one]. I won’t miss the B.S. about the game. I’ve been very lucky to be on a lot of good teams and to finish with Atlanta, with people who are baseball players and a manager who treats you like a human being. I’m very happy.”
But not even Cox can talk him into returning?
“Bobby’s asked me a couple of times, ‘Are you sure?’ Wagner said, smiling. “I said, well if you don’t retire, I won’t retire.”
♣ OK, game’s about to start. Gorgeous afternoono here at Wrigley, can see the sailboats on Lake Michigan in the distance. I’ve got some stuff about Omar Infante and a few other note, but I’ll write them as separates or comments here on the blog. Need to get this posted before first pitch.
Derrek Lee has a son named Dylan. Derrek assured me he’s not named after Bob. Still, let’s close with a tune by Mr. Zimmerman.

Yes. The offense has been silly bad, despite the winning. But the defense has been pathetic.
First Diaz bobbles a ball that allows the runner to get to 2B. Then he can’t make a decent throw to get the guy at the plate (can ANYBODY throw out runners at the plate in our outfield?).
Runners LOB and poor defense…. not a good combination for winning.

Soriano, after hitting .346 with 16 homers and 35 RBI in his first 37 games against the Braves, has hit .231 with no RBI in his last seven against them.

Loved some of his comments, especially the one where he has already made a ton of money. I never understood what the difference was between a $120 million contract and a $100 million contract. Either way you, your kids, and your grandkids will never see the end of it.

Nick 3.0, i think if you look at the numbers, they will show that the Braves haven’t been that bad offensively since the AS break.
However, i think this is one of those cases where the numbers would be very misleading…. if you look at the game yesterday for example, it shows that we scored 5 runs, which would appear to be a pretty decent game offensively. but what you don’t see is that we struggled like crazy the first 26 outs and got most of those 5 runs on one last minute hit. not that that doesn’t count, but it kind of makes the day look a little better than it really was by watering down the 99% of the game where we struggled or wasted opportunities.
in the same way, we’ll go 3 or 4 games scoring less than 3 runs, then suddenly we’ll score 13 runs in a game. so i think we’ve been pretty bad offensively, but i think the numbers make it look a little better than it is by glossing over our offensive troubles.

Katherine, I don’t watch. No one said it wasn’t his right, but if he claims he is going to retire then retire, but if he is just coming back then he doesn’t need to tell people he is going to retire. We were due a loss like this! Poor defense and spotty offense, the great pitching has been wonderful, but Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens, and now Hanson have struggled in their last start Unfortunately, there is so little room for error in making the playoffs this year. In past years. our record at this point would be enough to almost be a sure bet for the wildcard, but the defense and the offense are going to have to have a major surge to keep us in contention!

He’ll be back in a while, though, obsessing over how one game will cost the Braves their season. Now all we need is the return of Don to suck off the Phillies and hand them the division.

O.K. I’ve read some of their (Phillies’ fans) posts, and some of them have certainly been out of line. I believe that most of the people here are Braves’ fans. We don’t all see things the same way, but that’s what I like about interacting with others here. I actually learn a lot about the team (past, present, and future) by reading the contributions of others who follow the day-to-day operations of the organization more closely than I do. To me the difference of viewpoints and opinions here is what appeals to me. I don’t agree with every opinion of Nick, Mitchell, or anyone else; and I don’t expect everyone to agree with all of my opinions. A page worth of “go to hell, Nick” posts is as annoying to me as a page worth of “ballgame” posts in the third inning is to others.

Katherine: The key word in your reply is YET. The offense and defense is poor and the pressure is constantly put on the pitching staff. I am impressed as h+ll with what this team has done this year, but the talent level of the position players is poor at best, Diaz, Cabrera, Ankiel, Ross are all decent bench players, Heyward still plays like a rookie(the injury has hurt his production as well),Lee has had his worst season in 10 years, Gonzalez is just an average player both on offense and defense. We get consistent production from 3 players, Infante, Prado and McCann.
The Phillies will move past us and we will be left in the dust of other wild card contenders, unless the poor defense greatly improves and the hitting becomes more consistent throughout the game.

Maybe try waiting a little longer than 1 1/2 games before judging a trade? Ever think the guy is a bit nervous playing in Chicago in a different uni? Hey these guys are not human, are they? 0-7 in his first two games means he’s going fail the next 100 times as well, right?
The problem with most of the kneee jerk posters around here is they expect instant gratification of every aspect of the game. Baseball is not very enjoyable for those that hang on every pitch or every game. It’s a marathon. 1000’s of things go right & 1000’s of things go wrong every season & that includes whichever teams make the playoffs & the eventual World Series champion.
I don’t know what’s wrong with some of you nitwits who expect success every AB, pitch or game. Maybe you never played the game or understand it. Maybe it’s how you were raised, who knows.

I don’t disagree that Ankiel mostly has no chance against lefties (except Santana, interestingly, for whatever reason) and they probably are better off with Melky there hitting RH, but saying a guy isn’t any good against lefties and saying he isn’t any good at all, is two very different things.

This team absolutely f*ing sucks.
If any one game shows how utterly hopeless they are without the stellar starting pitching and bullpen work they’ve been getting of late it would be this one. This is embarrassing.
It really is amazing that they are still in first place.
They’ve been having to scratch and claw for wins against some of the worst teams in the league.
It’s pathetic. Just say it. They suck. It feels good doesn’t it?

You would think that a team would be fired up after yesterdays comeback, but they just showed up today and thought they were going to win. There is no point in Bitchelling about the offense. It’s not great but adequate enough to win 60% of the time with this pitching staff. No NL team has it all (Pads offense worse than ours, Philly no pitching depth/bullpen, etc.). We are a tea that is going to win a bunch of 3-2 games.

The 1991 Braves had a great lead-off hitter, had an MVP at third base, had great pitching, traded for a closer that proved to be light’s out, got good production from every outfield spot (including the lead-off hitter) I mentioned.
I think this team is a lot different than 1991. This team knows how to win, but offensively, always seems to be patching a hole and praying that the pitching keeps them in the game so they can hopefully squeak out a win.
And, it’s working.

Braves runs scored in August …
1,4,2, 8,3,2, 3,6,4, 4,8,1, 1,13,4, 10,3,2, 5,1 (so far) …
0,1,2 runs … 6 games
3,4 runs … 7 games
more than 4 runs … 6 games
Not sure why all the b…ching. 6 nearly certain wins, 7 probable wins with the Braves pitching, and 6 games that need some great pitching to win. Should be something like 13-6 through that stretch based on runs scored.

We make their starters throw 100 by the 7th then wear out bullpens which is most teams weakness… works 75% of the time.. I do this with travel teams I coach.

I get why Bobby brought him in (i mean he’s still Brian McCann), but B-Mac is gonna have to pull it together fast if we’re gonna have a shot at this thing. He’s not gettin’ it done at all right now.
And yeah, Prado was horrendous today. But you can’t rag him too much since he’s been about the only consistent batter we’ve had all season (except for maybe Infante). If Prado lost us the game today, he’s won us about 10 others.

I looked at the box score the entire evening (following the game on GameDay, just as yesterday and the day before, and the day before that and so on…). Yes, that at-bat was key, because Marmol was all-over the place yesterday and had just walked Lee to start the inning. It was just a matter of knowing who’s pitching.

Nick 3.0, this isn’t a terrible team by any stretch of the imagination. This is an amazing pitching staff with an amazing bullpen and an inconsistent offense.
The good news is that with all the money we’ll be freeing up in the next couple of years (au revoir, Derek Lowe), we can fix the offense pretty easily, so i expect that part of the team to get a lot better. The pitching should continue to be fantastic (and i think it will get better).
To be honest, i have kind of a bad feeling about this year, but i think this team has a very bright future and will be a contender for years to come.

If you say so. A run is a run and it doesn’t matter if it comes early in the game or late with the bases juiced. They had plenty of opportunities to score today and missed almost all of them. Even if Hinske hadn’t swung at that pitch, there’s no guarantee he gets a run home. If he had struck out would that have been better?

Guess I was right to call ballgame in the third inning.
I think I should get some credit for that. Just calling it like I see it.
I mean, the grounds for Terry Pendleton’s dismissal from this team are too many to count. It’s unbelievable.
Some of you people act like the Braves have won the World Series four years in a row or something. They haven’t won a playoff game in five years. They’ve finished no higher than third in any of the last four years. They should have made the playoffs last year but completely choked in the final week of the season and in so doing showed what little heart and toughness they possess.
I have almost no reason to think that they won’t blow this thing and not even make the playoffs and I’m not saying that because of one damn game.
I believed they could win the division from the beginning and predicted it in Spring Training. They’ve had a great year to this point and if they can’t overcome all the injuries and aren’t able to hold off the Phillies I can understand that.
But if you’re seriously asking me to have faith in a team with Bobby Cox and Terry Pendleton still at the helm, you’re asking too much.

Mitchell, i may get blasted on here for sympathizing with you, but i do sort of feel your pain. I think you’re a little too negative, but as someone who watched this team crush my hopes year in and year out growing up, i’m slow to trust that this team is for real too. As much as i’ve always loved the Braves, they’ve always felt like the boy who cried wolf to me… they keep sucking me in and letting me down year after year. So coming into this year, i was skeptical too.
But the thing is, they’re fun to watch and they’re still our team. And I think you have to get to a point (and this is something i struggle with all the time) where you don’t get too obsessed with whether we’re going to win it all and just enjoy the ebb and flow of it. I think because of the overhyped attention that the media and fans and sports talk people place on “how many championships have they won???”, we lose sight of that and think “well, if they don’t win it all it’s a waste of my time”. But the thing is, soooooo much luck goes into winning a title, especially in baseball more than any other sport. So when people get obsessed with that stuff, i just have to tune it out and hope for the best.

You don’t hear Yankee fans just shrugging off losses and saying “It’s just one game man,” when they lose to teams like the Orioles or Mariners in the middle of a playoff race.
No, they boo and rip their players when they don’t get the job done, New York sports radio hosts pick apart the game and question every move by Joe Girardi and the newspapers write ridiculous, scathing headlines.
But am I asking for all that? No. I would just like it if some of you didn’t act like such p***ies when people criticized this team for not playing sound, fundamental baseball and for losing to the hapless Chicago Cubs.

Maybe some players, who are prima donnas can thrive in that environment because they are so full of themselves that they don’t care what the fans or media think about them. From my experience, New Yorkers aren’t generally nice people. I’m glad the majority of Atlanta fans aren’t like that and actually support the players when they aren’t perfect.

That’s exactly the problem. They’re not underperforming. They have the second-best record in the NL. That is, under no circumstances, “underperforming.” Answer me this honestly: did you expect them to do this well at the beginning of the season? I sure didn’t. There were a hell of a lot of question marks for this team going in to the season, and the club has responded more than admirably.
The entire premise for your posts is faulty. Your expectations for this team range from extremely lofty to unreasonable. That, and you can’t see the big picture. You take take every at-bat, pitch, every game and turn it into a microcosm of their entire season. It’s a faulty philosophy for major league baseball. Works really well for football, though, but I can’t imagine how a guy like you can handle an entire football season without stroking out. It demonstrates your fanhood, certainly, but it also demonstrates your lack of understanding of the game. Baseball isn’t meant to be analyzed pitch-by-pitch. That’s why they play 162, champ.

The Braves are in first place, have the second best record in baseball, have held the Philthies in second place for months now, are playing as a team that always seems to have somebody different step up, and have certainly been exciting to watch. In other words, they are winning. And no matter how many games they win, there is a contingent of folks here that will find some fault to complain about. The manager sucks, the hitting sucks, the pitchers suck, etc., etc. Talk about a glass half empty outlook on life. Try to enjoy the little things fellas. It’s all we get in life.

Baseball is a funny game. Check out these two wikipedia excerpts. Braves and Twins ended up with their “Face of the Franchise” the exact same way 11 years apart. Prior obviously had a bit more success, but the parallel is still remarkable…
In 2001, Prior re-entered the draft, and was considered by some to be the top prospect, but the Minnesota Twins, who had the top pick, were warned that Prior didn’t want to play for them. Fearing signability problems,[1] the Twins opted to take local talent catcher Joe Mauer, leaving Prior to be taken 2nd overall by the Chicago Cubs.
“After he completed his high school career at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, Jones was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 1st pick overall in the 1990 amateur draft.[3] Jones was not the Braves original choice in the draft. General Manager Bobby Cox had been looking at Todd Van Poppel, but Van Poppel said he would not sign if he was drafted by Atlanta.”

We passed a few places, then decided Burger King sounded good–ICEE!!!–so we’re driving…driving…driving…get close to the hotel, and still no Burger King. And now we’re crazy hungry…anything’s good (except “that place”…). Mommy then saw a sign for Jason’s Deli. SWEET! So we drive into the shopping center, aaaaaand Jason’s is closed. It’s passed 7 Kansas time, our stomachs are still on 8 ET. We finally found an Applebees’…that worked…good chicken fingers…

tiger297, I don’t really hold the expertise to make that decision or judgement, it just seems like you’d want a guy to have managed in some moderately pressure-filled games before doing so in the big show. That just seems to be the way things are done, like Eric Wedge… I think he coached for like five years in the minors before getting promoted… Ryne Sandberg has managed at every level. Are there any examples of guys who didn’t manage long in the minors? I’m sure there are, but I’m not familiar with them.

Personally I want eddie in the bullpen where he can throw my kid baseballs but I don’t expect he will be there much longer either way

Brenly didn’t have any managing experience at any level. Another example, Larry Dierker, former Astros pitcher who took the ‘Stros to the playoffs a few times.
Eric Wedge, despite all his minor leauge managing experience, has no success at all with the Indians. Surprised he lasted as long as he did.

DOWN ON THE FARM:
GWINNETT is on the losing end tonight against the KNIGHTS 6-8. FREDDIE FREEMAN (.309 BA) has blasted his 17 HR of the year and it plates two runs (80). He goes 1-4, BB, and scores twice. Lead-off CF MATT YOUNG (.298 BA) goes 3-4, BB with two doubles (30), and two runs scored. 2B JOE THURSTON (.259 BA) keeps elevating his game at the plate with a 2-4 evening including his 10th yard-shot, 2 RBI and 2 R scored. LF WILLIE RAMIREZ (.214 BA) is 1-4 this evening, but it’s a maxx-saxx blast (7).
Starter JOSE ORTEGANO (3-9, 6.33 BA) is butchered and hung out to dry. He goes 3.2 IP, 7 H, HR, 6 R/ER, 5 BB, 2 SO. MIKE BROADWAY (6.75 ERA) joins him going 2.1 IP with 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO. SCOTT PROCTOR (7.47 ERA) and STEVE MAREK (1.23 ERA) go an inning each of no-hit, shutout ball.
MISSISSIPPI and J.J. HOOVER (0-1, 7.71 ERA) go down to defeat 2-7. 2B ERIC DUNCAN (.278 BA) has a two run blast (8) as he goes 1-4 with 2 RBI (60), and 2 R scored. 1B ‘45″ GOMEZ (.280 BA) , LF YASSER GOMEZ (.337 BA), CF ANTOAN RICHARDSON (.297 BA), SS DAN NELSON (.206 BA), RF MIKE DANIEL (.262 BA) had a single each, but were scattered throughout the game and ineffective today.
HOOVER goes 4.2 IP, 7 H, HR, 4 R/ER, 5 BB, 7 SO. WALKS and a gopher ball…….not pretty. BENINO PRUNEDA (4.08 ERA) and YELIER CASTRO (8.10 ERA) are also roughed up and take hits to their pride and their ERA’s.
TY HARRIS (1.20 ERA) has a rough night as well giving up a hit and two walks in 0.2 IP. The difference with HARRIS is he allows no runs to score.

Evening gang…
Following up on richbrave’s excellent minor league roundup an hour ago, watched Mississip’ tonight against the Smokies.
The M-Braves offense was done three batters into the game after a Dan Nelson single and an Eric Duncan homer to right. Mauro Gomez followed the homer with a single, however Michael Daniel would ground into a 6-4-3 and aside from leaving the bases loaded in the 8th after the Smokies’ Tyrelle Harris came in and gave up a single and two walks to load the bases, the lads from Pearl did not threaten the rest of the game.
Hoover made his AA debut tonight and struggled with location. He left his fastball up most of the night but JJ did have some success with his changeup. Hoover was able to wiggle out of trouble and stranded 5 runners over the first three innings before the Smokies led off the fourth with a solo homer. The Braves’ pen would yield three runs on six hits the rest of the way and after the two runs in the first, the Smokies would pitch eight scoreless innings the rest of the way.
Defensively right fielder Michael Daniel made a nice diving grab to rob Tony Campana of a hit in the 2nd and third baseman Donell Linares made a nice barehanded throw to erase Tony Thomas in the 7th.
