I feel good about this one:
Magic Number 38 after the Phis bat in the 9th.
Phils have 2 runs in 16 innings so far against Washington, in this series. Only 4.1 of those innings were pitched by S. Strasburg.

Hope Strasberg’s OK. A major injury to him is a big blow to that franchise. Even if he is OK, I don’t see the Nats letting him pitch anymore this year.
That’s the big drawback with making a pitcher your No. 1 pick. Arm injuries are so common.

ESPN calling Strasburg’s injury a Wrist thing…even if it’s a pulled muscle, if I were the Nats, he doesn’t pitch another inning this year…no reason to risk the future of the team on meaningless games…

Had an adventure after everything was finished at the college: We left at like 6 o’clock Kansas time, and we’re about an hour or so from the hotel, and hungry. But you know how it is when you’re slightly overheated–not much of an appetite, per se…but we gotta eat. We passed a few places, then decided Burger King sounded good–ICEE!!!–so we’re driving…driving…driving…get close to the hotel, and still no Burger King. And now we’re crazy hungry…anything’s good (except “that place”…). Mommy then saw a sign for Jason’s Deli. SWEET! So we drive into the shopping center, aaaaaand Jason’s is closed. It’s passed 7 Kansas time, our stomachs are still on 8 ET. We finally found an Applebees’…that worked…good chicken fingers…
The Royals/White Sox game was on one of the TVs near our table, but they never put any scores at the bottom of the screen…no big deal since they lost, though…

It’s pathetic how the ESPN “homers” want to Phillies to win the NL east so bad…I guess the Braves are making a lot of people’s predictions look bad. One didn’t even pick them for the post season? Where does Baseball tonight find these people? I miss the old baseball tonight crew.

tiger297, I don’t really hold the expertise to make that decision or judgement, it just seems like you’d want a guy to have managed in some moderately pressure-filled games before doing so in the big show. That just seems to be the way things are done, like Eric Wedge… I think he coached for like five years in the minors before getting promoted… Ryne Sandberg has managed at every level. Are there any examples of guys who didn’t manage long in the minors? I’m sure there are, but I’m not familiar with them.

Dan…alot of the guys on here talk about pitching coaches and such that never really managed becoming managers but I don’t have the knowledge to name any of them. Also I would expect there is a good bit of pressure managing in Venezula. Personally I want eddie in the bullpen where he can throw my kid baseballs but I don’t expect he will be there much longer either way

Yes Dan, lots of them. Two of the top of my head–Bob Brenley, who jumped from the Diamondback’s broadcast booth to the dugout and won the World Series in ‘01 over the Yankees. And Bobby’s mentor, Ralph Houk went from Yankees catcher, to coach to manager

Brenly was a coach for the Giants for a while, too, before he was a manager. And Houk was the bullpen coach for a few years while playing before becoming a AAA manager for a few years after that.

Brenly didn’t have any managing experience at any level. Another example, Larry Dierker, former Astros pitcher who took the ‘Stros to the playoffs a few times.
Eric Wedge, despite all his minor leauge managing experience, has no success at all with the Indians. Surprised he lasted as long as he did.

GWINNETT is on the losing end tonight against the KNIGHTS 6-8. FREDDIE FREEMAN (.309 BA) has blasted his 17 HR of the year and it plates two runs (80). He goes 1-4, BB, and scores twice. Lead-off CF MATT YOUNG (.298 BA) goes 3-4, BB with two doubles (30), and two runs scored. 2B JOE THURSTON (.259 BA) keeps elevating his game at the plate with a 2-4 evening including his 10th yard-shot, 2 RBI and 2 R scored. LF WILLIE RAMIREZ (.214 BA) is 1-4 this evening, but it’s a maxx-saxx blast (7).
Starter JOSE ORTEGANO (3-9, 6.33 BA) is butchered and hung out to dry. He goes 3.2 IP, 7 H, HR, 6 R/ER, 5 BB, 2 SO. MIKE BROADWAY (6.75 ERA) joins him going 2.1 IP with 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO. SCOTT PROCTOR (7.47 ERA) and STEVE MAREK (1.23 ERA) go an inning each of no-hit, shutout ball.
MISSISSIPPI and J.J. HOOVER (0-1, 7.71 ERA) go down to defeat 2-7. 2B ERIC DUNCAN (.278 BA) has a two run blast (8) as he goes 1-4 with 2 RBI (60), and 2 R scored. 1B ‘45″ GOMEZ (.280 BA) , LF YASSER GOMEZ (.337 BA), CF ANTOAN RICHARDSON (.297 BA), SS DAN NELSON (.206 BA), RF MIKE DANIEL (.262 BA) had a single each, but were scattered throughout the game and ineffective today.
HOOVER goes 4.2 IP, 7 H, HR, 4 R/ER, 5 BB, 7 SO. WALKS and a gopher ball…….not pretty. BENINO PRUNEDA (4.08 ERA) and YELIER CASTRO (8.10 ERA) are also roughed up and take hits to their pride and their ERA’s.
TY HARRIS (1.20 ERA) has a rough night as well giving up a hit and two walks in 0.2 IP. The difference with HARRIS is he allows no runs to score.

Infante is a helluva ballplayer. Not only has he become an excellent hitter, his defense at the all positions he has played is above average. Usually utilitymen (well, he’s not one anymore) are just adequate at their different defensive positions.

Brenly is sort of an example. Dierker is a much better one. Maybe it doesn’t really have any meaning, I just feel more comfortable knowing a guy has managed in tough situations before he’s making serious calls that change games in the post season.
