Braves’ quotes after Saturday loss to Cubs

BOBBY COX

On Hanson

“He wasn’t tagged hard, the hits. Some broken bats and ground balls hit at the right spots. He pitched fine. Could have had better luck. He didn’t have much luck today.”

“We still almost pulled it off. We know we’re not going to do it every night, but we had the runner on to do it. Marmol’s tough. If he’s around the strike zone, he’s just about unhittable.”

More on Hanson

“The three-run inning were nothing but head-knockers. Can’t do much about those.”

On the errors

“The cut-off play, Prado got off-balance, tried to make a miraculous throw and couldn’t.”

BROOKS CONRAD

“We had a good fight back. Tough loss today, but we showed our heart there at the end like we always do. Just came up a little short.”

On his at-bat vs. lefty Marshall

“Every situation, whether you’re hitting right or left, you’ve got to go up there with a plan. I got ahead in the count early, which helped me. Saw some pitches early, then got one to hit 3-1 and squared it up pretty good.”

More on the comeback attempt

“You start to think, here we go, this is our game to win now. We’ve done a good job this year winning those games, and it’s a big reason we are where we are right now, with our record. But, I mean, it’s tough. You can’t win them all like that. We’ve sure won a lot this year and that’s been a big reason.

“You get that feeling, OK, here we go. We just came up a little short.”

Is it to the point where it’s surprising when you don’t pull it off?

“I wouldn’t say that, but we’ve had a bunch of big ones like that this year. You keep getting in those situations where you come back to one run and you’re like, OK, we’re in good shape. We can win the game. That’s our kind of mindset in those games.

“It’s tough when you come back all the way, then you end up losing. It’s kind of tough to swallow. But we showed our resiliency again. We’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully get a win.”

TOMMY HANSON

“I just felt like from the beginning, my command wasn’t quite there where it has been. That’s the biggest thing. I got behind some guys and it came back to bite me. Even though there was a couple of times where I felt like I made some good pitches and they just got hits — the broken-bat [hit by] Ramirez and just a couple of times where it didn’t work out.

“But today my command just wasn’t quite there.”

Could tell early?

“My fastball just didn’t feel like I was commanding it that well. I knew it was going to be one of those days. I knew it was going to be one of those days where I had to go out there and just try to keep us in the game, do the best I can.”

“I wasn’t quite getting the ball down, wasn’t quite getting it to the corners, and it kind of showed.”

Try to aim pitches after getting behind?

“Sometimes I’d get behind, ball 1, ball 2, and try to throw a strike instead of just making a good pitch. Whenever I’m getting behind in the count it’s not good. I need to go out there and throw strikes and go right after those guys. When I’m throwing the ball well, that’s how I pitch. It just really didn’t work out today, as far as my command.”

It’s been a long period of strong pitching for you until today

“I’ve been feeling great. I think today was just one of those days. I just didn’t feel that good and the ball just wasn’t quite coming out [right]. I kind of want to not look at this one too much and just keep doing what I’ve been doing. Just chalk it up as a one-of-those-days kind of deal.

“Obviously I wish I could have gone out there and given us a better chance and kept us in there a little bit closer, especially with what happened at the end there. But it just didn’t work out that way.”

The walks bother you as much as anything?

“Yeah, I think the two guys I walked ended up scoring. So yeah. Walks will always kill you, especially on a day when I don’t have good command and I’m not hitting the corners.”

We can’t keep relying on late inning comebacks—-that won’t cut it in the playoffs.

Today’s lineup should be: 1-Infante; 2-Ankiel; 3-Lee; 4-McCann; 5-Gonzo; 6-Heyward; 7-Cabrera; 8-Minor; 9-Prado. Do it Bobby!!

They should clone Infante And Prado. Let them play everywhere except pitcher and catcher.

Pretty sure infante could play catcher if he had to.

Ditto Broncs, that is an asinine suggestion.

everybody thinks i was genius for a ’second’ leadoff putting my best guy in the 9 hole a couple of times…hell, i was out late drinking the night before and wasn’t thinking too clearly. i would never soberly put my best hitter be the last to get a turn to swing.

Lee has been “o-fer” against the Cubs. Are y’all sure he isn’t a double agent working to make sure we lose? (Just kidding, but it does look mighty suspicious!)

Hinske was pressing too hard in the 9th, when he popped out on the first pitch(which was high and outside) from the Cub’s closer. The pitcher had just walked the previous batter on 4 straight balls.
Get em tommorrow, Braves!

Sometimes it seems like a player after a good game is rewarded by starting the next day. Ankiel struck out 3-times against the LH pitcher. Cabrera should have started and it might have just made the difference.

Has anyone ever seen two WORSE at-bats Melk-Dud had pinching hitting in games 1 + 2 in Chicago?
Absolutely disgraceful….

‘Dud strike out on three pitches before Ankiel’s game-winning triple, and followed suit again this afternoon on three pitches before Conrad cleaned the bases.
Has a bigger RAT ever be seen?
For everu single contribution Melk-Dud makes, he pays it back double with lacksdasical horrible bonehead plays.

Melky has a low baseball IQ. Not a very bright guy.

If someone walked the bases loaded and it was Melky’s turn to bat, he’d swing at the first pitch out of the strike zone.

Braves still in first – Pitching plus some timely (sometimes lucky) hitting and Phillies/Mets injuries. Hey. I’ll take it.- better than Division Third or Fourth.

Bobby is Bobby-always was and will go out that way-

Except for Chipper going down, this has been an unexpected good Braves’ Season (so far) .

Would help with some POWER HITTING and BETTER DEFENSE (Lee will help with D and Prado and Infante D should improve playing one position every day, but Melky and Diaz same old )

GO BRAVES…

The Braves are 7 -3 in their last 10 games. We have the 2nd best record in the NL, 4th best in baseball. We’re in first because we’ve earned it, not because anyone gave it to us. Sure, I’d love to have a little stronger offense but we’re 5th in runs scored in the league, 12th in baseball, so we’re not at all horrible. The Phillies, who’re chasing us, have scored a whole 10 runs more than we have this year. Yes, other teams have had injuries but so have we. It’s part of the game.

I need to start searching the Atlanta classifieds. I know there’s a job advertisement out there that I’m missing. It reads: “Wanted: Braves Blog commenters. Must be a whiny Nervous-Nellie type, and completely clueless about the game of baseball. Inquire at the AJC.”

I sure would like to see Tommy develope a killers instinct instead of oh well maybe next inning, show some sense of pitching instead of throwing, the kid has great stuff and needs to learn how to use it (Tim Hudson, Mike Minor and Kris Medlin). Lose that oh hum attitude, I see it on the mound every time he makes a bad pitch, show some dicuss or something, the batters see it for sure.

Braves have to start scoring before the seventh inning, i know we got four today, but overall this offense needs to wake up. Got to give our pitchers some breathing room earlier in the game. Got to get better at the small ball and manufacturing runs early. As far as positives go, gotta love the fight in this team, they don’t give up and hats off to Brooksy again comeing off the bench, but overall if the offense gets better at the little things early in the game they can help themselves allot. Someone needs to tell Lee that we don’t hit homeruns here, singles and walks are acceptable. I’ve never seen him play much, so maybe its just the way he swings, but seems to me over the first two games he is going for the homer everytime he comes up. Gotta take the series today! Go Braves!

Hinske swinging at the first pitch late in the game after the pitcher walks the previous batter and was obviously wild?!?! He has been terrible the last month and a half. Keep him on the pine, especially when they have a healthier Glaus on the bench.

I’m concerned…..but GO BRAVES!

Melky is a waste. I’d much rather see Blanco. We gave up the wrong guy. He makes every catch an adventure. The other day when he collided with Gonzo, he just kept coming. The outfielder has the easier play I agree. But if the infielder is standing underneath the ball it’s his ball. That’s happened to me as a shortstop. It just shows what kind of baseball smarts Melky has. He doesn’t know how to play situational baseball. He doesn’t square around when he has to sacrifice.
