BOBBY COX
On the Diaz-Gonzalez double play:
“Gave it to him (the green light). He had it stolen standing up. Problem was, we swung at the pitch. That was a big run. He had it stolen without even a throw going to be made.”
So Gonzalez was not supposed to swing?
“Well, the play was in front of him, it was a hanger and he swung at it. If he could have, the best thing to do was take it, if you can. That’s easier said that done sometimes, but Matte had it stolen standing up and we do that.”
On bunting Prado to get the runners over:
“If he hits into a double play, you’d be asking why I didn’t bunt. The ball stuck in front of home plate. We still had the game won. Mac lined out to first base, that’s a double and the game’s tied.”
On the 5-2 home stand:
“We had a good home stand. We won both series. We have to say it was a real good home stand. We can’t win every game. I keep thinking we can. It’s been 51 years; we’ve never done it yet.”
MARTIN PRADO
On the bunt play:
“It’s a good call from Bobby. I didn’t freaking bunt, and probably cost us the freaking game too.”
On if he was surprised:
“I was expecting the call, even before (Jason Heyward) got on base. I knew. I knew it was going to come and I didn’t do it. That’s smart. That’s probably the most regular play in baseball. We have to tie the game; we’re playing at home. I guess I’ll be doing early work tomorrow, bunting.”
ALEX GONZALEZ
On Diaz attempting to steal third:
“It surprised me. …(The pitcher) was coming with a breaking ball. He made a good pitch. In that situation, first swing I’m not protecting the plate, I swing hard.”
MATT DIAZ
On attempting to steal third:
“We had (Joe) Peralta with like a 1.9 to home plate. If we face him again, hopefully we’ll steal against him. He’s really slow to the dish.”
On if he saw Gonzalez’s pop-up:
“No I did a bad job of looking in, I glanced in but didn’t really look in. It’s kind of like when you hear your wife, but you don’t listen to her. I glanced in but didn’t look in.”
On third base coach Brian Snitker’s response:
“He was yelling up, up, up and get up, get up, get up. I was like, ‘OK did it go to the backstop?’ and he’s like, ‘No, back. I’m like ‘Oh where,’ and then I stood there for like two seconds like a doofus, and then I decided to go back to second.”
On if Cox called for the steal:
“He gave me the green light. That doesn’t mean I have to go and when I do go I still need to look in.”
On what the hitter should do there:
“We have three coaches in different locations (signaling) to me, and the hitter would have no way of knowing I was going. In his mind he may have seen it out in front of him, but not register what was going on either. I do that. When you’re hitting, you’re so focused on the ball. Hindsight, you may say ‘I probably should have taken it (as a hitter).’ One hundred percent of the time, whatever before hindsight is, I need to look in and pay attention better to what’s going on.”
On the home stand overall:
“We need to look at this home stand as a whole, and the last road trip, we’ve got a be OK with it. If we’d lost the first one and won the last two, we’d say, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going on the road with a lot of momentum.’ That usually happens about an hour into the flight, you think back, but right now it just stinks losing the last game of a home stand, that was a good home stand but could have been great.”
DEREK LOWE
On his outing:
“Day games, I fight the weather as much as I do the game. It seems like it’s a constant battle with the heat. I can’t remember pitching this many day games in my life in one year. But that being said, everyone is out in the same scenario, but I get hot during night games. These day games are killing me, so I’m happy with it. I made it seven innings. That’s a first in a while. The Nationals – I can’t remember the last time I beat them. It seems like they’ve beat me five or six times in a row. It’s the third time this year. They give me fits.” (The Nationals have beat him three times in a row and five of the past seven.)
On the home run pitch:
“I was trying to get creative on the home run to Morse, try to throw a front door cutter, and that didn’t work. Just a few too many mistakes. I knew getting Nyjer (Morgan) out was always going to be important and he got on twice and scored twice. He made a big difference.”
On the home stand:
“I think you look at it as a whole, 5-2. it was a successful home stand. We lost my two games, which is always a bonus (he said with sarcasm). We’re still in a good spot, coming down the stretch with about 40 something to go, still in first place, still playing very good night in and night out.”

Well, there you have it. Sweeps are hard even against teams like the Nats. Morgan was disruptive. Desmond continued to kill us. Willie Harris loves to beat us. Derek was up a bit so grounders were line drives and the ones on the ground got through instead of becoming double plays. Our RISP ineffectiveness struck again. I still believe Farnsworth is awful under pressure. We should trade him to the Phillies for a John Kruk’s old batting practice uniform. A 5-2 home stand is great but we need to beat teams like this. The Cubs are playing rookies everywhere. That definitely must be a sweep. Padres just did it and the Nats are Philly’s next meal.
Nice job Caroll. Why do we need this Dave O’Brien person anyway. You should do a Leno on him.

You’re welcome Bat….and company.
I’m about to close down the fort for the evening. I’m sure DOB will pick up the reigns here shortly from Chicago, if he hasn’t already.
Hasta!

Dearest Bravos, even in defeat you make me proud. Seems to be a lot of Philly fans taking out the frustrations of second place here. Makes sense. I bet they spit and curse on each other at their own message boards. Phuckin’ Phillies.

Is it wrong of me to NOT want D-Lowe to start games in the postseason for the Braves? I long for that three-man rotation where Lowe only comes in from the bullpen…

Just gotta ask why you continue to spell Matt’s nickname as “Matte,” as opposed to “Matty…”

Prado is hitting .253 w/ RISP, and struck out his last time up w/ runners on… that’s why Bobby put on the bunt… bottom 8th… at the very least, make sure you improve your odds to get at least one run by having runners at 2nd and 3rd w/ only one out…
Perfectly understandable call when you’re down two late and struggling to score runs… this isn’t exactly the lineup that allows you to play for a big inning.

How suspect is the Phillies’ pitching staff? Cole “Slaw” Hamels is the number 3 starter and is 7-10 in his “rebound year.” In the bull pen we have Danny “Braves’ cast off” Baez. ‘Nuff said.

I like how intense Prado is. He’s at the point where he expects himself to succeed every time out there. That is the attitude and focus great hitters take to the plate and what will take martin to the next level.

Giants did us a huge favor, and themselves considering their standing in the West and in the Wild Card. Nice to see that the boys ain’t satisfied with winning the series. They could have swept and the know it…nice to see that 1st place has made them even hungrier.

It was frustrating to be at the game today and see the loss. But it wasn’t frustrating to THROW OUT THE FIRST PITCH.
The most fun loss I’ve ever been to.
Overall, good homestand, and we get a legitimate gamer in our lineup tomorrow…at Wrigley. Nice drama.

Does it make sense to anyone else that Matt has the steal signal and Gonzalez is hitting at the plate and DOES NOT KNOW THE STEAL IS ON?

Re: the truth…
The “green light” to steal doesn’t mean the steal sign is on technically. It means that it’s up to the judgement of the runner if he wants to steal or not….NOT that it is automatically on…but an option.
Still a frustrating play on Diaz not “looking in” or paying attention to his coach.

I’m glad to see the Braves’ $60 million dollar pitcher is “happy” with giving up 4 runs in 7 innings to the worst team in the division. That’s why you’re getting the big bucks, Lowe, keep up the good work.

Keith….Yes I know the difference…I missed that part of Diaz’s statement…
It would seem to me that the coaches should know of the intention of the runner for obvious reasons…like passing it along to the batter…
I agree on the Diaz response…he may not “listen” to his wife but he needs to be watching his coaches and staying aware of what is going on with the batter…
Mental Lapses…like Escobar was famous for….
Come on Diaz…. fundamentals can win or lose it all…

I understand why Dunn is being moved down, with Wags and O’Flaherty there, but while he’s been erratic with his control, he hasn’t given up an earned run in 11 appearances. O’Flaherty has more experience and better overall stuff.. really nice change, but Dunn throws big time gas and having a guy who can strikeout guys from both sides of the plate (O’Flaherty’s BAA is 40 points higher against righties) is a bonus. I know Dunn isn’t polished enough yet to be the main situational lefty down the stretch, he’ll be up soon enough once the rosters expand though, I hope.

Love the postgame quotes. Always enjoy Diaz. Lowe sounds a little conflicted (it’s hot, but it’s always hot, I keep getting day games, but night games are hot, too, so it’s weird, but doesn’t matter, and the Nats are my daddy…..).

Is there anyway we can dump Lowe? I’m sorry, but the guy’s been a bust ever since he came to Atlanta (and even before, if you ask me). At least it seemed to bother KK when he lost…Lowe doesn’t even seem to care. I can’t believe this guy’s going to be 38 next year with 2 years remaining on his very lucrative contract. I’ve got to the point where I absolutely expect the L when Derek takes the mound.

Still in 1st place. No need to panic. Possible line-up when Lee shows up…and for the future…(Probably not going to happen)
Prado 3B(b/c he led off most of the year and got the offense going)
Heyward RF
Lee 1B
McCann C
Infante 2B(everyday player, he’s earned it)
Gonzo SS
Melky CF
Diaz / Hinske LF
This way you still have Heyward being protected by Lee (as long as he hits), you still have alternating Lefty / righty match-ups like Cox likes and Infante is there to clean up some mess that McCann and Lee might leave out there.
Its not a superstar filled line up, but I’ll put that against any NL team and like my chances.
