“currently in the lower-level minors”. It can’t be a draft pick of this season. Brett Devall might have been my guess a week ago, before the elbow problems.
Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg is in A and a pretty good player from South Africa. Cory Rasmus is good also, A advanced.
Summary/editorial regarding the past 1000 postings on here: 1) Troy Glaus deserves credit for saving the Braves season in May & early June; 2) Neither he nor Nate McLouth have intentionally struggled and don’t deserve the idiotic comments made by Braves NON-fans; 3) For the 1 millionth time, if Troy’s knees are barely functioning better than Herman Munster’s, 3B is not an option, and ANY baseball fan should know this; 4) A healthier Glaus could be a valuable asset in the post-season off the bench; 5) We can’t expect to win a Series with a CF hitting under .200; 6) The Braves would likely win any bench-clearing brawl that wasn’t the typical sissy baseball fight; 7) Yes, Freddie Freeman is still a LEFTY hitter, and we don’t need another one of those in our current lineup. The Braves can’t hit lefties, yet at Richmond righthanded hitter Barbaro Canizares is hitting over .335 (outhitting Freeman) and has been red hot lately – not on the 40-man roster so he’ll get overlooked for September call-ups: 9) Maybe the Braves will get lucky with Lee’s back for the next 2 months…..hope so.

LaRoche may have cleared waivers and would be a very good pickup, but he’d also cost a lot more in terms of prospets, he costs a lot more and is left handed. DLee is a better fit for us right now and going forward.

Very well said. I for one would like to see Matt Young get traded for Lee for no other reason then he deserves a chance to play somewhere and it looks like he isn’t going to ever get a chance with the Braves.
Not asking them to quit complaining that’s why I said haters keep on hating. Just don’t expect me to complain. Especially when the people complaining say the same things over and over…..What I meant to say was if it wasn’t for Bobby Cox we would be 25 games in front of the Phillies….rabble…rabble…rabble
Believe was a Braves thing last year….IMO it should stay in last year. As I stated earlier, this team is too special for some stupid slogan to be applied to it. If anything, the “Win One for Bobby” motto has been going all season, so I’m good sticking with that.
Btw, “The Run to Choptober” sounds like a Fox Sports commercial with Dane Cook.

I WANT Freddie Free to start NEXT season as the starting 1B for the Braves – with no expectations of grandeur whatsoever. IF you can find the post with my name on it that says I was EVER in favor of Freddie Free THIS season…
Well, you just won’t. The Kid was never an option for me this year. The expectations would’ve wilted the kid. WHAT YOU WILL FIND:
1) A MILLION requests for the benching of Troy Glaus since the second week of July (because he was injured)
AND
2) A MILLION requests for the acquisition of Derrek Lee – the cost feasability, the low risk/high reward, the lack of financial commitment beyond this season (A HUGE PLUS!, trade-value-wise), and the fact that he played 1B AND was a RH power bat who ALWAY clobbered at The Ted.
Man, I feel EXTREMELY brilliant today, to say nothing of vindicated. I mean really, people all over this blog (like LeBron, I remember and took names, Wayne from Utah!!!) REALLY trashed me a month ago for how “stupid” tha trade was.
CB, it would make sense since he is a 1B. He is in Rome, above average prospect, I would have like to see him in Atlanta someday, but if he brings the Braves Derek Lee I’d be ok by that.
P-Town Braves, Vizcaino stays put because of the injury. I don’t know who Bethancourt is? where does he play?
Phillies fans are already saying the trade will not help the Braves ! Sounds like they are afraid, Don’t you think ?!? Hey Mica Brave, Remember how me and you were pitching that the Braves should get Lee ?!? Looks like me and you were right !
If Lee can help us, then I say, get him. The consensus in the other blogs seems to be to get Lee, and then disable Glaus.
Someone mentioned to give Mclouth up for Lee. My question is: What team would be fool enough to take on Mclouth’;s contract? Dont we have him for something like 11 mil a year until 2012, or am I mistaken about that?
Dumbfound, in my honest opinion we do not need any help as it is us in first place. They are in second place, they need the help, so I believe they are afraid.
I hernaited a disc in my lower back in Nov of last year, slowly getting off the NSAID’s now. I am surprised they didn’t try those for an athlete like him. They work wonders
About two weeks before he and Turk showed up, Tito Ortiz from the UFC was supposed to come with a few other guys from UFC… we had a massive rocket attack that day, bunch of 105mm katyusha rockets came through the side of our building (luckily, only 12 of the 30 hit us), wounding a lot of our guys, taking off my buddy’s legs, blinding another buddy, and Tito and his friends refused to come out. Can’t say I really blame them, I guess, but Mike had heard about the incident and had some very choice words for Tito and the UFC staff. He spent about 20 minutes telling us how he was here for us and nothing could have stopped him from coming. If any of you had any doubts as to the character of Mike Remlinger, I assure you that he’s a quality human being and a patriot to boot.
The only thing holding up the deal is Lee’s back problems. He had an injection in the epidural of his lower back to ease discomfort from a bulging disk on Monday and missed the last two games.
Lee, in the final year of his contract, has $3.4 million remaining on his salary. The slugger is hitting .251 with 16 homers, but has had a .939 OPS since the All-Star break. Glaus, whose body has shown fatigue, has struggled with a .575 OPS the last two months. He will not be an option at third base.
Lee, who can veto a trade with his 10-and-5 rights, rejected a deal to the Los Angeles Angels in July. Yet, the Braves have been told that he would approve this deal.
Hey, you must not have caught my apology at the end of the previous blog, huh.
I’ll try to remember it: You were right on about DLee back a month ago. I was wrong, and I admit it!
To give me some credit, I was basically saying that the Braves would give Troy a chance to prove he did or didn’t have it, then they would go to FF is it was deemed he didn’t have it. I never thought they would go after Lee.
Now, to correct the record, you were saying they should deal for Lee NOW (back then). I was partly right that at that time first base wasn’t the top concern. Though you were wrong about the timing, you were right about the player. And to be honest, I am glad.
So, not to understate my apology: You were right and I was wrong (at least partly).
Either way, I think Lee will be a welcome addition to this team. Though I am still a bit surprised they didn’t give the kid a shot.
(better copy paste this somewhere, cause I don’t apologize much!)
The Braves would be wise to give Troy Glaus some SERIOUS whirlpool time – to the tune of 15 days on the DL – to do some healing. He is still going to be an important bench component come playoff time!
In Lee and Gonzalez, Braves would have half of the stellar infield from the Marlins’ 2003 World Series championship team (Lowell and Castillo were the others, with Pudge behind the plate).
Lee and Gonzalez hit 49 of the Marlins’ 157 homers that season (Lee had 31, Gonzalez 18)….
N8, I smile often doing my job, and am usually happy even if I’m not smiling (it’d be kind of weird to sit there smiling while hacking away at stories on deadline). It’s when we (me and a few others I know of in my line of work) read the repeat comments from some either bitter or jealous or whatever that we get surly. And with me it’s usually only for about 7 seconds while typing a comment like this, then not again till we notice another similar, parroted sentiment….
I don’t think I ever took a position on a Lee trade in weeks past, but the situation today is far different that it was a month ago. First, Chipper is injured and out for the year. Insurance my be picking up some his remaining salary this year essentially freeing up some money. 2. Glaus has continued to struggle at the plate and his knees and mobility are only getting worse. A month ago there was still a reasonable hope that he could turn things around. and 3. Lee has been hitting like crazy since the All-star break. His numbers before the break were significantly lower than Glaus’ and their numbers for the entire year are pretty similar now, but they are obviously moving in different directions.
According to Fangraphs over the course of the 109 games the Derrek Lee has played in he has produced $4.3M of value. So using his production to date over the next 40 games or so he is worth $1.57M. He is owed approximately $3.5M for the rest of the season. These numbers result in a player that is worth $2M less than he is being paid hence the fact that he cleared waivers. Based on these numbers I see the Braves getting $ to take him and not having to give up much in return.
To even believe there could be any comparison whatsoever between this trade and what we’d give up to the Wainwright/Drew/Tex trades is absolutley insanity personified.
First of all (no matter what you think of the trades), Tex was available to the Braves for 1.5 seasons. Drew and Marero were available for a full season. Lee will be a Brave for a month and a half plus post season. I hardly think that Wren would even consider giving them more than a scrub minor leaguer for a rental of that length, especially considering the braves are eating his salry, giving the Cubs and their fnancial bottom line a huge break for when the new owners go out this winter to revamp their team.
Come on y’all – I know this deal is difficult to find fault with, but let’s not go too far into the realms of fantasy looking for crap to gripe about.
“but it wasn’t a good trade back then, with Chipper still here and Glaus in question………”
Chipper was still in his doldrums (just about to break out), and Glaus was stinking up the place like a tire fire for well into the beginning of a second month. The Braves had somehow crafted a 6.5 game lead that was whittled down due to poor middle of the order production.
Because I saw it sooner than most/many doesn’t make me wrong.
yes P-town brave, Canizares is a AAAA player based on 20 at bats last year….
Or is it because he’s a 30 year old in AAA? This is his fourth year in the minors, its not like he’s been a lifelong minor leaguer.
We are definnetly going to see the yankees in the world series. rematch of 1996. Hahaha i love it. But i think we should incluse rick in this trade. sending him mcclouth and kk for him and a 2nd rounder
MiaBchBravesFan- You have certainly been giving yourself an awful lot of credit for calling the Derrek Lee trade over a month ago. I know how it feels I called us getting Farnsworth (I had him coming here with Guillen though). Good prediction but if you think about it how hard is it to evaluate your teams roster and find a hole then look at other teams rosters that are out of the contention and find a player that is pretty good and not owed a ton of money? Then you have yourself a prediction…
I’m not going to look it up, but what I think I said about Lee was that we should not and will not give up a top prospect to get him. I was never against bringing him in. I think you were all in favor of trading good prospects to get him.
I always said that he would obviously outplay Glaus based upon Glaus’ injuries and the last morth or two of track record.
And to declare yourself right? If that makes you feel better, go for it. But I actually think I am more correct because I said if we could get him for nothing that I’d be fine for it. Not that I’m going to go patting myself on the back oe anything.
Lew – I am all for the Braves getting Lee. I think he’d be a much wanted/needed boost to the lineup. And for a team making a playoff run, a bat and glove like this is necessary. And he wants to be in the Braves playoff/pennant chase. Plus he is a Phillies masher, and added bonus. It is easy to say to everyone to stop being nit-picky but that won’t happen. If you want the Braves to go to the playoffs, you make this deal.
i wonder if DOB will break the Lee trade first? Oh wait, the only noteworthy move DOB has scooped would be that Griffey Jr. pick up. Here is to day late and a dollar short dave. Booo
The Mike Remlinger story from 82ndAirborne is so good, met him a few times in Chicago as my ex used to date him, he told us a few classic maddog stories that cracked me up !

Am I the only one not buying a frickin word that comes out of that guy’s mouth?

Dont we have him for something like 11 mil a year until 2012, or am I mistaken about that?
A little, 4.5 this year, 6.5 next year . 1.25 buyout for 2012 …………. in millions

So I just looked at some 2nd half numbers and it looks like a great upgrade if we consider
the merry-go-round that is our infield. Comparing Chipper’s OPs numbers with Lee’s it
looks like a wash there – obviously Chipper’s OBP numbers would be more preferable but
Lee’s numbers arent bad by any means.
So if you consider that we are essentially replacing Chipper’s number with Lee’s, we have
to compare Infante and Glaus. Big upgrade in every category ends up being the net
difference not even mentioning the defense.
Chipper 4 13 .307 /.391/ .533/.924
Lee 6 20 .313 /.356 /.583 /.939
Infante 1 6 .361/.398 /.464/.862
Glaus 2 12 .196/.291/.304 /.595

MiaBchBravesFan,
I’m not going to look it up, but what I think I said about Lee was that we should not and will not give up a top prospect to get him.
