It’s been 17 years since the Braves have had to make a run to the playoffs without Chipper Jones as a fixture at third base. To get back there now, they’ll have to do it without him.
An MRI Thursday revealed Jones has a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is facing season-ending surgery.
“It couldn’t have come at a worse time, obviously for us, as well as he was playing,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said.
The 38-year-old Jones could also be facing the end of his career, something he was already mulling over anyway.
That’s not a decision he was prepared to make Thursday in the aftermath of the sudden news that he was out for the season, his agent B.B. Abbott said. Jones plans to address the media on Friday before the Braves open a four-game series with the Dodgers.
“He’s distraught,” Abbott said. “…Until he gets his arms around it, he knows it would be premature for him, or anybody else, to say definitively what he will do at this point. It’s a big, big decision. He can’t make it two hours after he finds out his season is over.”
Jones had said Wednesday in Houston, the day after he injured his knee making a dynamic play at third base, he would “have to consider” coming back next season from an extended rehabilitation.
“As we did when this all (retirement talk) started, we’ll wait until after the season to make those kinds of determinations and let Chipper decide what his future holds,” said Wren, who spoke to Jones briefly Thursday before flying back from Minneapolis where he attended the MLB owners’ meetings. “But I think he’s dedicated to rehabbing and getting ready for next year.”
Jones knows exactly what the six-month rehabilitation entails. He missed the entire season in 1994 in what would have been his rookie year after tearing the ACL in that same left knee in spring training. But that was when he was only 21, about to turn 22.
At age 38, while hitting only .228 in mid-June, Jones admitted he was leaning toward retirement, and met with the Braves to discuss his options, with two years and $28 million left on his contract.
But since word leaked of that meeting, Jones has been much better at the plate, hitting .307 with seven home runs in 44 games. For the season, he’s hitting .265 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs in his usual No. 3 spot in the order.
“I told Chipper he was swinging as well as I’d ever seen him,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said Thursday. “He’s lowered his posture from the left-hand side and was just attacking the ball. That led me to believe he’d be leading us on. But not anymore.”
Jones injured his knee Tuesday night, jumping as he turned to throw across his body after fielding a ground ball up the third base line by the Astros’ Hunter Pence. Although he was in obvious pain, lying on the ground in foul territory, Jones was hopeful afterward that it wouldn’t be as bad this time around.
Jones said Tuesday night and Wednesday morning there wasn’t as much swelling as when he tore his ACL in 1994. He thought he might be able to avoid surgery and come back this year. But he found out otherwise Thursday morning when he was examined by Dr. Marvin Royster, the same Braves orthopedic surgeon who performed his operation in 1994.
“When we got the news this morning, actually, I was pretty shocked,” Wren said.
Now the Braves will likely turn to Brooks Conrad, Omar Infante and Martin Prado to fill the void. Prado isn’t likely to return from the disabled list with a broken pinky finger until early next week, Cox said. All three can play third base, as can Eric Hinske.
“When we get Martin Prado back, it’ll mean inserting two All-Stars into the lineup, he and Omar Infante,” Wren said. “So I’m not sure we’ll find anything better than that out on the market place.”
The Braves could still search out a third baseman through a waiver trade, but it gets harder, given how many players have already gone through waivers and been claimed or blocked, and given that teams ahead of the Braves can block moves knowing exactly what their needs are.
Troy Glaus, given the health of his legs, is not an option to play third base, Wren said. He also said Jones’ injury doesn’t necessarily expedite the call-up of first base prospect Freddie Freeman.
“It doesn’t really change our first base situation at all,” Wren said. “So I don’t think that really fits into the equation at this point in the season.”
The Braves, who led the Phillies by 2 ½ games in the NL East, pending Philadelphia’s game Thursday night against the Dodgers, are facing key injuries just when the Phillies are starting to get healthy.
In less than a week, the Braves suffered two potential season-ending injuries to both Jones and pitcher Kris Medlen, who has a partially torn elbow ligament and faces the prospect of surgery himself.
“When you look at our club and you think of the Atlanta Braves, the first guy you think of is Chipper Jones,” Wren said. “And his presence in the lineup has been increasing (given) his performance the last couple months. He was a force. We’re losing a lot.”

Not good news. BUT. We have capable backups in Conrad and Infante. No team is immune from injuries. If anyone can handle it it should be the Braves, who we’ve heard ad nauseum this season that they are a TEAM with no real superstars. Chipper is a skilled, experienced hitter who will be missed, but up until recently has had a sub-par season or two. Again, not good news, but not the end of the world.

This is a really tough break for Chipper, Bobby and the Braves. I don’t see Conrad being able to replace Chipper on a night-to-night basis. Maybe Glaus moves back to 3rd, but his knees are so bad, he can’t bend very well at first, much less third base. The best option will be Infante at second and Prado at third, or maybe we trade at this point. I hate to give away a stud prospect, BUT we are in first place, and it is mid-August. You can’t just shrug this off and expect things to work out in the end with the existing line-up.

Chipper is and has been the leader of this team ever since our 3 aces departed. He has done a good job and has had some great numbers in a few of the last seasons. I think Chipper will be missed for much of the off-the-field leadership that he provides and the guidance that the younger guys seek. As a long time Braves fan (circa 1984) I would place Chipper Jones up there with The Murph and Bob Horner.

Well, looks like all those folks who said Infante shouldn’t have been an All-Star because he wasn’t a starter will get to see what he can do as a starter. Or would the team possibly bring Freeman up and move him back to 3B for the rest of the season?
Either way, it hurts our depth, and it really stinks for Chipper. If he hadn’t started hitting, he could probably retire and feel pretty much at peace with it. Now, he’ll have to debate whether to retire or try to come back from surgery. Coming back from surgery could be difficult, especially at his age, but, if he retires, I’m sure he’ll wonder if he had at least another year or two in him.

This is not the end of the season, but it is a hurdle that must be overcome. I think the first reality is that the Braves can’t keep winning with a CF batting like a pitcher and a 1B living on memories of May. I’ve never jumped on the Freeman bandwagon before (I still remember Jack Pierce all too vividly), but the day Chipper DL’s, Freeman should come up. If Ankiel doesn’t start hitting at least .250 during the Dodger series, I think the Braves need to sit him down and just face the fact that we’ll have to depend on Diaz/Hinske, Cabrera, and Heyward to “Git ‘er done,” with Infante in reserve.

Serious question: Can you swing a bat with a torn ACL? Stick a heavy brace on him and let him platoon with Glaus at 1st base if so. I’m sure he doesn’t want to let this be the end and would fight through the pain.

This is not good, but once we get Prado back it’s not the end of the world. Shift Prado to 3rd, Heyward moves to the 3 hole and we are OK.
Prado – 3B
Infante – 2B
Heyward – RF
McCann – C
Diaz (vs. LHP)/Hinske (vs. RHP) – LF
Glaus – 1B
Gonzalez – SS
Ankiel – CF (or Melky on day off or against a tough lefty)
That’s still a very strong lineup, especially the top 5. You could swap Gonzalez up to 6 and GLaus to 7, or even just put Hinske at 1B. That’s been the key all year, versatility. We can still do this. We have the best pen in the league and a great rotation, we need to remain positive. Also remember we have a few weeks before the waiver deadline to add a bat somehow.

@ McCann Fan: I TOTALLY agree! If that defensive play the other day by Chipper ends up being the last of his career, WHAT A PLAY! He did record a beautiful out. I think Chipper had other ideas of how he’d retire, though. But sometimes the way reality plays out isn’t always what a player has in mind. Happens quite frequently, actually.
Does anyone really know what the recovery time is on a torn ACL these days? Would it be shorter these days compared to when it last happened to Chipper 16 years ago?

There is no way Glaus can play third. The guy can barely move to catch a pick off nonetheless cover all of third base. Use Conrad at 3rd till Prado is back. Once Prado is back he’ll take over and leave Brooks coming off the bench. Infante at 2nd. Move Heyward to 3rd in the lineup.

Bob Horner had a big fro, the only way I see the Braves trading a stud prospect for a 3B is if Chipper decides to retire and they trade a prospect or two away to get a solid young 3B who can fill that spot for years to come. Otherwise, I wouldn’t expect anything more than a stopgap acquisition.

Go get DUNN and let him play in place of an aging Glaus and let Conrad manup at third spotted by Infante. We need the big bat and Glaus and Dunn can rotate off the bench in big pinch hitting roles. Need the big bat and Dunn seems to be the only one? Who are some potential 3rd baseman? Ouch this one hurts…. even with ole Chip having a down year… he was kind of coming into form?

So does Glaus go back to 3B and we bring up Freddie Freeman? Risky but might really improve the club if Glaus can field – which is a big IF at this point. FF is hitting .305 in AAA with some pop – 15HRs. So perhaps he can be a bit of lightning in a bottle.
Infante is a good hitter but not an everyday player.

Glaus to 3rd base????? Are you on meth?
Unless the ball was hit right at him, with a favorable waist-high bounce, he’s not gonna field it. And don’t forget that he missed an entire season due to SHOULDER surgery – he can’t even throw the ball across the field anymore.
The Braves need to be careful about waiver-wire trades – don’t give away the ship to bring a body in. Conrad and/or Infante are very serviceable guys at the hot corner, and both can hit.
We are losing our team leader who was hitting very well, but the drop-off to Conrad or Omar is not as great as most teams would suffer right now.
Expect Chipper to rehab and come back the middle of next season. He won’t want to go out this way, and he’ll get paid very well just to rehab (which he would be doing anyway) via insurance money.

Very sad. In the last month he looked more like the Chipper of old. And his last play was splendid.
While Wren explores trade possibilities, mebbe the best option is to bring up Freddie right away, then against righthanders play Freddie at 1st and Brooks at 3rd, and against lefthanders play Troy at 1st, Martin at 3rd and Omar at 2nd. That ought to minimize effects of losing Chipper.

To me the answer here is put him on the DL to allow some time to recuperate. Then activate him in September and, if he can handle it, play most days for the first 5 innings or so. Get his bat in the lineup. Then pull him after 5 for defensive reasons. If this doesn’t work and his bat isn’t helping, put him back on the DL for good.

Chipper has been my favorite player since he was a rookie and I was only 9 years old. I grew up with him, and thus, there will NEVER be another athlete I admire as much as him. I have always cringed at the thought of him not playing for the Braves anymore. Some may be ready to move on, but I’m not…
I really hope he rehabs and comes back next season. It would be a shame to see him end his career this way. He’s proven that he can still hit and help this ballclub win. The naysayers will say that he’s not worth $14 million, but who cares? We are watching a legend folks. The best everyday player in “Atlanta Braves” history. (Aaron only played 9 years in Atlanta. Murphy is also close.)
As for this season… Our starting lineup will still be solid, but we lose some power. (Infante only has 3 HR’s all season.) And of course, that means our bench will take a hit. But hopefully we can pull it all together and make a strong August, September, and (possibly) October run.

That is bad news, but the Braves have won a lot of games this season when Chipper could not play. The Braves have a good team, with good “chemistry,” and they can probably overcome this and continue to play well. In a way, this is a somewhat “satisfactory” way for Chipper to end his career, if that it what happens. He was hitting well, and his last play was an excellent one, a great defensive play, like he made so often in his prime. The way to remember Chipper is with those last solid hits and that last defensive gem, not as a guy struggling to hit and make the plays on defense.

I’m not shocked at all about what i’m reading on this board. Anybody that’s saying that the Braves won’t recover from this and also saying that Omar can’t play everyday does not have a clue. Yes, Chipper was beginning to turn it around, but honestly there is not much drop off with him now out of the line up.
The Braves have all kinds of options. Glaus moving back to third is probably the dumbest of all options that I have ever heard and if Cox does that then he needs to go ahead and retire NOW. Brooks Conrad is also not going to be moved over there to start once Prado returns back from his injury – not when there are two better options.
The most reasonable options are Omar Infante or Martin Prado who is a better 3rd basemen than he is a second basemen which is saying a lot. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if Cox switches Prado over to playing 3rd and move Omar to playing second base which is a position that he can play EVERYDAY.
Fans need to hold their heads up and quit crying. This team is still in as good of shape to win today as they were yesterday (talent wise). Where do they miss Chipper? He is no doubt a leader on this ball club but there are also other new leaders on this team now – Brian McCann. Now if this was Brian McCann being out for the rest of the year I’d say we were in trouble, but Chipper is replaceable at this point in his career. Omar Infante has done it once earlier this year and also did it a few times last year.
Not going to give up on this squad – LETS GO BRAVES!

I hate to break the news to those hoping for rehab for Chipper. If you go back to DOB’s piece, it’s a season-ENDING injury. He must have surgery to repair it. There is no temporary fix for this. Since it’s the same knee from 16 years ago, it could mean a CAREER-ending injury as well for Chipper. This is horrible news for Chipper, and it may likely help him get more firm on what is he’s going to do from this point.

Sucks for Chipper but all hope is not lost. No moves need to be made. Prado plays 3rd and Infante plays 2nd. Conrad is probably not an everyday guy but could fill in if needed. Infante is hitting well over .300 as is Prado. Not much of a production drop off from what I see, just a loss of a little depth.
I hope Chipper can come back from this. It would be nice to see him give it a go but I’m not sure he will. I grew up watching him help build this franchise into a dynasty. He was the Jason Heyward of the 90’s for the Braves. People tend to forget how few players stay in the same uniform for their entire careers like the players did in the old days. He is of a dying breed.
See if ARod or one of those other money hungry chumps restructures their contracts so the organization can afford to bring in other players.
Good luck Chipper, your boys are gonna win this one for you and Bobby!

Hang in there Chipper, this has beena magical season so far and it ain’t over yet, just rest him for the rest of this month, have him back on the roster before Sept 1 so he is eleigible for post season.
Then wear a brace that gives lateral support and go for it,he may be able to play without further injury.

I agree with CSpin: I think if Chipper could still travel with the team like Greg Olson did back in 1991 — broken leg in a cast & all — it would be almost as good as having his bat in the lineup. The team loves this guy. They need his presence down the stretch for sure!

Here are my thoughts:
1. ABSOLUTELY NO Glaus at third. If he played at third, every single opposing hitter would drop a bunt down the third base line. Bad news.
2. Prado/Infante give us lots of options on the waiver wire. We could acquire a third baseman, a second baseman, or an OFer to replace Chipper’s bat. We don’t have a true 3 hitter (Prado? JHey?) but we have enough depth to piece together a decent lineup if we find one more bat. Our lineup has been hurting of late, and Chipper has been raking during that time. This lineup less Chipper won’t score more than 2-3 runs/game.
3. The real question is… Who can we pick up on the waiver wire? It’s difficult for a first place team to get anybody unless they clear waivers entirely.

I luv Chipper. This is awful. Furthermore, anyone who thinks Troy Glaus can play third base at a decent level obviously hasn’t been watching the same robot I’ve watched at first base this year. He can barely move. He would cost the Braves countless runs if that were to take place. It won’t. Look for a move or Infante to be the everyday 3B when Prado gets back. I still think we’ll make the playoffs, but the offense just won’t be capable of putting enough runs on the board to win it all.

Who are we kidding? Chipper has been riddled with injuries every season for the past several years. Will we miss him? of course, but this does not make or break this season. Put Brooks in at 3B every day and see what we get out of the kid. Once Prado is back we could platoon Conrad and Infante at 3B. All is not lost Braves fans – we still have a very legitimate shot at the post season. We love you Chipper, but we cannot let this send the team into a downward spiral.

Those of you saying the Braves can’t recover should recall the 1999 club. That team played the whole season with their top run producer (Andres Galarraga, cancer) and 30-save closer Kerry Ligtenberg (Tommy John surgery), played the second half without Javy Lopez in his prime (torn ACL) and had John Smoltz pitching hurt for the second half (eventually requiring surgery that caused him to miss the 2000 season). The point is, times like this are trying but they allow others to step up. I’m sure this Braves bunch can figure out how to move forward and stay competitive.

Glaus moved to first because he can’t physically play third, so that’s out. Hinske can play 3B, as can Conrad, Infante and Prado. Also there’s a chance to make a post wavier trade for 3B, but I don’t think there’s too many great options out there.
Ty Wiggington comes to mind. Price tag on Bautista is too high, as the Blue Jays are selling him like he’s always hit like he has this year. Good ole Kelly Johnson is an option for 2B, sliding Prado to 3B.
The options MLBTraderumors are saying are: Aramis Ramirez, Pedro Feliz, Wes Helms, Adam Kennedy, Jose Lopez, Brandon Inge, Jhonny Peralta, Ty Wigginton, Edwin Encarnacion and Willie Bloomquist are among the third basemen who could clear waivers this month. The Mariners tried to engage the Braves on Chone Figgins last month, so perhaps Jack Zduriencik will call Frank Wren to see if the Braves are interested now.
None really excite me except maybe Figgins or Aramis Ramirez. After terrible starts, both have been pretty decent over the past month or so.

They way Infante’s been swingin the bat, Bobby was going to have to find a way to keep him in the lineup when Martin comes off the DL anyway. If you put Infante at 3B, I don’t think you’ve lost much defensively over Chipper. The biggest loss is Chipper’s leadership in the clubhouse and his playoff experience. That can’t be easily replaced.

Terrible news for Chipper – yes, but let’s not act like this is a huge loss to the Braves chances to make the postseason. They are in first place with what amounts to a huge hole in the 3 spot of their lineup that has been a hole all season long. Chipper was a great player in his day, but he’d turned into a 7 hole hitter (at best) by now. His defense has been equally shaky.
Yes, he was starting to hit better (which Joe Simpson reminded us of every time he came up to bat), but he still wasn’t doing anything from a run production standpoint.
Again – sad for Chipper and his career, but not a big loss for the Braves. More of a loss for the bench, as either Conrad or Infante will now be an everyday player.

To all the people what are posting that Glaus needs to play 3rd base, What the hell are you smoking? Maybe it is the Atlanta smog. The man can barley run. Yes once he gets going he is ok, but do you really think he can play third on one leg? Let’s face it. Chipper’s defense was a liability. His bat will be missed. Now that Cox has no choice, I think by putting our best bat 3rd in the order may make up for his bat. Either way, Bobby Cox is still the manager. If we had 9 chippers in the line up, Cox could still find a way to piss it away.

I was afraid this is what it was. I’ve been a Chipper fan since he was drafted and played down at Luther Williams Field in Macon, GA. I was able to watch him play his first game and fortunately was able to watch a lot more at Fulton County and Turner Field. If this truly is the end, which I think it is, we’ll see you in Cooperstown in 5 years. Thanks for being the heart of this team and showing the younger players that you can play for the same team for your career if you take the greed out of the situation.
You move Prado or Infante to 3B and play the other at 2B. bat them 1 and 2 and move JHEY to 3rd in the order where he will be for the forseeable futre. You have 2 table setters at the top and a contact hitter in the 3rd spot with power. Give Glaus 1 more week to see if he is starting to come out of it and if not, then you call up Freeman and start platooning the two.

Aweful for Chipper, and I HATE it for him (and those of us who still liked watching him play). But, we can still win.
Moving Glaus back to 3B is wishful thinking. Yes, he used to be great at 3Bm, but he now lacks the agility needed for the hot corner. He isn’t moving well laterally (check out the pickoff throws to first that have gotten by him) and he lacks the agility and speed to make the charging throw, which any good 3B needs to be able to do.
On the other hand, Prado is excellent at 3B. And, Infante can finally play every day (staying at 2B).
Finally, someone said they hate to see Chipper go out this way. I disagree wholeheartedly. Chipper went out looking like the player we know, not a shadow of his former self. He was swinging the bat well, and his (potentially) last play was a gem, one that we would remember him by.

I’m very sad about Chipper’s injury. It seems season-ending, if not career-ending. Very bad news for him and for the Braves.
Can the Braves still win the division and succeed in the playoffs? Yes, I think they can, and folks on this blog have suggested a number of combinations that will work. A very serious event, but the Braves can get past it.
One other note: Years from now, when Chipper is in his 50’s and 60’s, the treatment he gets now still will matter. My own experience says, have the surgery and worry about whether your legs will work and not be painful later. That’s a major life concern, even though now the game seems to be paramount.

John Smoltz. It’s easier for a third baseman to get in than a pitcher or outfielder. there haven’t been very many great ones (I believe there are fewer 3b in HOF than any other position). the standards are lower. also they do factor in time lost to injury – chipper lost 2 1/2 – 3 years.

First off its a shame it had to happen this year when we were making a run for Bobby.
Secondly if that is an end to Chipper’s HOF career what a way to end it. One of the best defensive plays of his career. If I had to walk away from something I love more than anything, I would it’s better to be forced out making an amazing play to help my team then hang around past my time.
Finally we have a ton of options to replace chipper albeit none of them are likely to produce the same way he would. Even when he was struggling pitchers feared him and walked him more often than not. He may have had a down year but his pressence helped this lineup a TON. Without him I fear B Mac wont get the same opportunities.
As for replacing him here are the options I see.
Trade or Waiver Claim:
Wigginton, Figgins, Aramis Ramirez, Jose Lopez are all possible Waiver candidates. Each one of those players offers potential but they are all either overpaid, underperforming, old, in a contract year with a team looking for a decent return.
In House:
Prado, Conrad, Infante, Hinske, and Glaus all have experience playing 3rd base. We could stay in house shuffle those guys through to find an effective position combo.
I don’t like this plan for a couple reasons. 1) Our offense was barely sufficient with Chipper and the players know it. Not doing anything will lead to a moral drop off as well as decreased offensive production. 2) This would mean that 3 out of those 5 would be starting every game and that diminishes our bench and pinch hitting ability greatly.
The Freeman Plan:
Glaus a 3B throughout his career could make the switch across the diamond opening up a position for Freeman at 1st. This does several things.
1) Gives the club and fans something to be really excited about and increases moral.
2) Granted its only AAA but in almost a full season Freeman has put up a .305/.367/.506 Line. That is an impact bat if it translates anywhere close to that.
3) It gives us an opportunity to rest/effectively replace Glaus. We have Hinske, Conrad and Infante who can all share time at 3B with Glaus to rest him and diminish the negative effects of his slumps.
4) Plus it gives us a chance to see what we have in Freeman for next season. IE Is he a bat we can count on to contribute or do we need to sign another stop gap to give Freeman more time.
Give Freeman a shot WREN!
Thoughts?

Bye Larry. Shame you didn’t step up more in the playoffs over the years. You could have had more than one ring if you had. It’s a shame that you are injury prone. It’s a shame that Wren didn’t anticipate your going on the DL for and extended period. It’s not like it hasn’t happened almost every year for you.
Good luck. Enjoy your retirement. And don’t twist a knee when you get to Cooperstown on your first ballot.

Thanks Chipper for all you did through the years to help the Braves be successful. Losing Chipper now is much less stressful than in recent years. The drop-off between the Braves with Chipper and without Chipper is fairly negligible at this point.
I agree that Chone Figgins would be a good addition and can be had for very little. Perhaps a deal in which the Braves might be able to unload KK to Seattle is in the offing?
Regardless, Conrad, Infante, and Prado all can man 3B and there will be little difference.

John Smoltz at 12:45pm…. sure Chipper may not have 500 homeruns or 3000 hits…but he does have one tiny little thing….the second best switch-hitting batting average of all time. His career numbers are very comparable to Mickey Mantle. Mickey hitting 100 more homeruns being the biggest disparity, although Chipper has around 150 more doubles.

I hate this news! This does not help the Braves drive for the postseason. But making the best of this situation, I see a couple of positive implications.
1. Chipper has a chance to “really” decide if he is ready to walk away. 2. Heyward moves to three hole.
3. Chippers salary is covered in part buy insurance.
4. Braves can add 3B bat with the possiblity of Chipper joining another playoff race in the middle of nest year.
5. Chipper gets his goodbye tour when he is ready.

Aramis Ramirez, Pedro Feliz, Wes Helms, Adam Kennedy, Jose Lopez, Brandon Inge, Jhonny Peralta, Ty Wigginton, Edwin Encarnacion and Willie Bloomquist are among the third basemen who could clear waivers this month. The Mariners tried to engage the Braves on Chone Figgins last month, so perhaps Jack Zduriencik will call Frank Wren to see if the Braves are interested now.

Terrible news. I suggest the Braves do this:
Move Gonzalez to 3b, his glove/range isn’t quite right for SS, but he has a strong bat, and adequate arm.
Move Infante to SS, bring Prado back to 2b, and rotate FF into the 1b mix with Glaus/Hinske. May work out fine. The biggest loss will be the missing presence of the legend.

All we should say is, thank you Chipper Jones. The greatest Atlanta Brave of all-time. How weird, bookend .265 averages to begin and end his career. How many players can you think of that made arguable their greatest play in their career during their last game. Also, how many players can you think of were swinging such a potent bat at the end? I know he struggled this year, but we’ll never know how much the injuries took a toll on him. A great player, a guy we were lucky to have since he was drafted 20 years ago. Feel real bad about Chipper. At least he went out swinging a hot bat and making a terrific defensive play.
By the way, there is little chance Glaus moves to third. The guy can barely walk let alone play well defensively at third when he hasn’t played there all year. The Braves will probably try to make a trade of some sort but if that doesn’t happen it will be some combination of Infante, Prado, and Conrad.

Prado now that he has played second for half a season is now a very good defensive second baseman so we owe it to him to leave him alone. We still have many other options for third none of which are Conrad on a every day situation.
After watching Ankiel I hate to say it but he does not seem to have a good enough bat to help us full time. He does not seem to any better than McLouth with the bat but he sure has a much better arm. I think we have a very poor outfield and now that we do not have Chipper’s bat in the lineup we are in trouble with what we have on the current roster.
From what I’ve seen lately Chipper was swinging the bat great from the left side but not from the right side. If FF could come up and hit like he is now doing at Gwinnet that might be the spark we need to win the East Division.

Glaus has bad knees and feet right now. Glaus can’t play well at first base currently, SO WHY WHY WHY would anyone think he can play third.
He cna’t move, and he cna’t play third( or first for that matter ).
Prado will play third (when he comes off the DL hopefully this weekend) and Infante will play second.

Maybe Glaus will hurt his knee too. No team in the NL playoff hunt is gonna let a 3B or 1B get through waivers for the Braves to claim. The Braves jacked around and could of had Adam Dunn. Now, we have no home run threats at all. I don’t consider McCann and Gonzalez only because they hit a homer every 10 games. Our outfield is pathetic. Half of our infield doesn’t speak english. Once the phillies pass us that’s it game over. If the Braves don’t win the division they will not make the playoffs, because the NL West will have two playoff teams.

You know, whether Chipper decides to come back from surgery or not, he has had a phenomenal career. Won a lot of games for the Braves. Has a World Series under his belt. He will likely be a Hall of Famer.
God Speed to Chip.
All of this said, I think that the team will miss him, but I think if any Braves team will can overcome this, it’s this years’. Infante will likely take a bigger role, and maybe a call up for Freeman? We’ll have to see. I think that this team can win big regardless of who they have plugged into the lineup. Gonna miss Chipper, but the magic isn’t done yet.
I say win a Championship for Bobby and Chip!

Granted, Chipper is the face of our franchise. And I have been calling him a warrior because that is what and who he is. Basically, irreplaceable. That said, as in real life, the young are there to replace the old. We supposedly have the best farm system in baseball. It may take three youngsters to replace the Legend, but let’s bring them up and get started with it, for crying out loud! I don’t think Chipper will ever play again, but he could coach, or manage?? Or maybe he just wants to go to the Double Dime and shoot some game. I hate hunting with a passion, but I love Chipper the ball player with an equal passion. Players like him come around once or twice in a lifetime. God bless you Chipper. Heal yourself. Trust your heart. You can still help your team if you never swing a bat again…

Chipper has had a great career and has brought us many great memories. He is the only one who always puts the team ahead of himself. Anybody else at his age would not have even tried that play because of the risk of injury. Only Chipper will give it his all until he can’t give anymore. Thanks for the memories (if you don’t make it back).

To all of you Phillies trolls that have suddenly shown up,
It is really REALLY bush league for you to come on a Braves blog celebrating the loss of Chipper Jones and appointing yourselves champs of the NL East. It is very poor sportmanship and in very bad taste to be happy a player of Chipper’s caliber who has had a GREAT career will require season ending surgery. And possibly the end of his career as well.
The last time I checked the Braves have a 2.5 game lead over the Phillies. Just because Chipper is injured in no way guarentees the Braves are suddenly going to start losing a bunch of ballgames so the Phillies can swoop in and take the title. This is reminding me of how cocky Mets fans were during the 2006-2007 seasons, and most of us Braves fans were actually rooting for the Phillies to win it all when it became apparant that the Braves weren’t.
You stay classy Phillies. You celebrate the loss of a great player, throw up on little girls in your ballparks and cheat by steal signs using binoculars of opposing teams. What class. If it weren’t for all the stuff surrounding the Mets, this would be the biggest joke of a franchise in the East.

Best wishes to Chipper for a complete and speedy recovery. If this was the last play of a great Hall of Fame career, what a play it was. So sad because he had turned the corner offensively and was playing with tremendous enthusiasm the likes of which we hadn’t seen for the past couple of seasons.
Getting Prado back will soften the blow, but instead of improving the team’s chances they are just treading water. Chipper was playing at a .400 OBP .900 OPS level recently and those guys are hard to replace. This team as constituted today will have a difficult time holding off the Phillies assuming Utley gets back in early to mid September.
Braves have a lot of options and flexibility, as noted. They can put Prado back at second and let Conrad/Infante/Hinske share third base, they can leave Infante at second and put Prado on third and keep Conrad in his off-the-bench role, they can try Glaus at third (which would appear to be a disaster in the making, ala Chipper).
I’m torn on where Prado/Infante should play; i.e., who’s on second, who’s on third. Infante’s lack of range has shown recently, but what we’ve seen of Prado at third screams of gold-glove potential.
They should bring up Freeman anyway, but that’s a separate issue. Presumably Hernandez goes out when Prado comes back. Here’s what I’d do:
5-Infante/Conrad
9-Heyward
4-Prado
2-McCann
7-Hinske/Diaz
3-Freeman/Glaus
6-Gonzalez
8-Ankiel (or eventually McLouth)

I suspect that the Braves will do what they always do and use the players they have for a few games to see if they can maintain status quo; that is the division lead.
Brooks Conrad has proved that he can play third well and is servicable as a hitter. I am sure he will have the position until Prado comes off the DL. At that point the Braves will still, in their favorite term “evaluate the situation”.
There are some decent options “possibly” available to play third including those mentioned here: Ramirez, Blalock, Wiggenton. Not sure that any of those is worth giving up the farm for. It might be nice to see what Freddy could do but for some reason (probably to do with major league options) the Braves are reluctant to bring him up.

Nobody from Philly better make any claims they would be in first if not for their injuries. We had JJ, Heyward, Medlen, Prado, Diaz, Saito, & now Chipper out for significant periods of time. First off, I hate this for the team and its a shame for the fans that Chippa won’t have his last hurrah at the plate at the end of the season…BUT…it was only a matter of time before this happened. Chippa has never respected his body and kept it in the shape necessary to minimize injury, so I don’t really feel sorry for him because he collected his check and didn’t respect his obligation to stay healthy for the team.

If this is the end for Chipper, what a great play to end on . . . but I would like to see him get the surgery, get in rehab, and give it a go next year so that he can go out on his terms. I’m assuming that he would hit well — maybe not with all the old power, but we know that the man can hit. I remember when Lou Brock was getting old and retirement was being talked about during a subpar year. Lou said that the next year would be his last, and he went out and played loose and hit around .300. For Chipper, the sad thing is that we’re in a pennant run, but with the talent on this club (and a few astute moves?), we should be there next year too. If Hudson will give us another solid year, and if Medlen, Jurjjens, Hanson, and maybe Minor, are healthy, and with Venters as closer, what’s not to like? So — good luck with the surgery, Chipper, and come back for a last hurrah in 2011.

@Bob Horners Broken Wrist. It’s a shame you feel that way about Chipper. I guess you felt the same about Mickey Mantle, too. He had bad knees if you remember and could have played longer also. I’m a retired Radiologist. Reading an MRI on a patient who has had reconstruction of the ACL is difficult, sometimes you don’t know what is scar and what is a new injury as the landmarks are completely disrupted by surgery. I suppose they have the old MRI’s to compare with.
I attended an MRI meeting in Duke around 7 years ago and they are one of the centers that receives MRI, xrays, etc on prominent athletes to review. So Chippers images will be reviewed around the country (hopefully) before surgery is performed. At the meeting they showed an MRI of a ‘prominent golfer’ which I took to be Tiger Woods. They couldn’t identify the true patient because of confidentiality agreements.
Good luck Chip, and good luck Bravos.

Chipper Jones has given his all to the Atlanta Braves for 15 years, and if he decides to attempt a comeback, the Braves will be waiting for him with open arms. I just can’t fathom a great career ending this way – it can’t end this way. And having followed Chipper since the beginning, I know he won’t let it end this way.
As for the Braves and what’s left of 2010, they now have even more motivation to win it all this year – and I think they may go out and do just that.

Infante can lead off and play 3B. Prado can hit second and play 2B. Heyward will hit third, Glaus and McCann 4th and 5th. Ankiel and Gonzalez will bat 6th and 7th, with Melky or Diaz in the 8 hole.

For everyone who is saying Glaus can’t play third:
While He certainly wont be able to play a great defensive Third he could certainly fill that role capably until the end of the season especially considering Conrad can come in off the bench as a defensive replacement.
For one thing Chipper Jones had many strengths but his D is certainly not whats going to get him in the hall of fame. So While Glaus might be a slight downgrade he wont be much different.
According to Baseball reference.com Chippers fielding last year reulted in -8 runs for the year below a replacement. This year he was much better as he +7
Glaus’ last full season at 3rd was 2008 and he was +1.
Let’s say that as most of you seem to think that Glaus will play poorly at 3rd and results in a -4 runs prevented below replacement (which he would have to be pretty bad to get there in 40 games).
The addition of Freeman to the lineup and keeping Conrad and Infante on the bench would EASILY make up that difference.
There is a reason Conrad is a bench player and has a average under .240.
He has holes in his swing and isn’t a great hitter although he does have GOOD power when he connects. IF he were to become our everyday 3B then he would get over exposed, pitchers would start studying him more, find his swings holes and his offensively production would drop. A bench/spot start role is perfect for Conrad. I love the guy and wish him the best but i think its best for him and the team that he stays in his current role.
The other option I like (kind of) is Figgins. He is not getting along with Seattle so they are desperate to get rid of him. He has a big but NOT HUGE contract (9 Million a year for 3 more years with a vesting option) He gives the braves Flexibility and is the most natural fit into our lineup. Figgins can play 2b, 3b and LF. For this season we could put Prado at 3rd and Figgins at 2b while keeping our bench depth.
He would fit nicely in our leadoff spot with a career OBP of .360 (down year this year and he still has .343) His speed is obviously his biggest asset and would give Prado(2), Heyward(3), and BMac(4) a chance to knock him in with a double or a steal and single and since we dont have alot of power that is a big deal.
The obvious concern with Figgins is contract length and price. Until Lowe comes off the books and we bring in the young an cheap arms of the future Teheran, Arodys and Delagado we are going to be tight on money. This burden would be lessened by making KK a part of any package offered to Seattle. Figgins wants out of Seattle and has made that known so they want to get rid of him and his contract badly. The Braves may be able to get Figgins for KK straight up. That means Figgins would have a net cost of 2 million next year. He is still a liability a few years down the road if his speed falls off but one I think the Braves should at least consider.

I get angry when I see so many people talking about moving Glaus, but I think I get even angrier at talking about moving Prado to 3rd. The guy is having a career year and you don’t mess that up by changing his position. In addition, he is a better 2nd baseman than omar infante, period. There is really no arguing that. Bobby may think that prado is better at 3rd than he is at 2nd, but you would never take a guy out of the middle infield and replace him with a guy who is not as good defensively just because he is a better 3rd baseman. You’ve got keep the middle as solid as you can and Prado is better than Infante in the middle.

@Bob Horners Broken Wrist. We’re not crying for Chipper (that is how you spell it), we’re sad for us. If you love baseball (which you obviously don’t), you would miss the excitement that we all get when any GREAT ballplayer gives us when he helps the home team win. As far as his salary goes, he could have held out for much more (and gotten it). I will surely miss all of his clutch hitting and plays (as he had many).

Whoever thinks this is a season crippling injury obviously hasn’t watched the Braves play all season. As long as Prado comes back OK, we will be fine. Chipper was a shell of his former self both offensively and defensively. We are getting a huge upgrade defensively with Infante, and now we don’t have to watch wasted opportunities in the 3 hole anymore. Remember, Chipper himself said he should be moved down, but Bobby was never going to make the move. The platoon of Infante/Conrad will be better for the lineup overall. Infante/Prado/Heyward/Mccann/Gonzalez/Diaz/Glaus/Ankiel should be our lineup down the stretch….We don’t have to waste Infante’s bat on the bench anymore, and we all know what Conrad has been contributing in clutch situations….Let’s go!

Yes innocent I have…my comment was based on both Jim Powell and Don Suttons(radio team) and Chip and Joe’s(tv team) comments. Both of them said it. They didn’t say peas and carrots but both said they thought Infante and Gonzo were having trouble where Prado and Gonzo were not. They watch the Braves live every game, I’ll take there word for it and from what I have seen I agree.

That is terrible for Chipper but not for the Braves season. When Prado came back Infante was going to be the odd man out.
I’m a huge Chipper fan (I wore the high socks in college because of him)but this is not the equivalent to the Cardinals losing Pujols, not even close. A younger, faster, better hitter will now have the opportunity to play everyday.

First and foremost, if this is the end for Chipper, and I hope it’s not, then thank you for everything. It has been an absolute pleasure following your career. People talk about your down numbers over the past couple seasons, but do they remember when you absolutely had to carry our offense for a 3-4 year span because you were the only legit power hitter we had. I hope you rehab and come back for a farewell season so that you can be honored the way you deserve to be. If Bobby comes back, then I’m sure you will too.
With all that being said, Braves fans, stop freaking out. We will be just fine. When Martin gets back, he will take over the hot corner, and Omar will become the everyday 2nd baseman. Believe it or not, this is an upgrade offensively and defensively. J-Hey slides down to the 3-hole and we keep on rolling. Bring up Freeman to take Omar’s bench spot and give him a few starts at 1st base from time to time to get his feet wet. That way, when Troy Glaus inevitably breaks down, the kid will be ready to step right in full time and we don’t miss a beat. Phillies fans don’t get too happy. We are deep. This is why you build the best farm system in baseball. For moments like this. Enjoy watching us in October. GO BRAVES!!!!

Dude hasn’t kept himself in the proper shape for years and the only thing he has been raking the last 2 yeats has been the cash out of the Braves wallets, while he hunts as off season conditioning. I rescind my statement with regard to the 2007 season. .364 in 2008 was a great average but he only delivered 75 rbi’s and missed 34 games. In 2009 he hit .264 with 71 rbi’s – Not exactly good from your number 3 hole hitter. In 2010 he was on the same pace as 2009. Once again not good from your number 3 hole hitter. Have you caught on to the trend yet?

One of Bobby’s quotes was that the Braves were looking for an infielder to take the roster spot, when asked about Freddie Freeman. But he also said they may bring him up for a few days.
Some people are confused by that, but I totally understand what he means. Right now the Braves have three of their top hitters out of the lineup…Jones, Prado and Heyward. And adding a middle infielder to the roster right now, while Prado and Heyward aren’t playing and while you already have Diory Hernandez on the roster, does not make sense OFFENSIVELY. But in the interim while Prado gets some hitting and rehab at bats in, they can’t afford to have a bunch of non-offensive spots on their roster. That’s why Freeman could make sense for a week until Prado comes back and Heyward gets back in the lineup. Any notion that bringing him up now will affect his arbitration clock is uninformed. If Freeman is likely your starting 1B in 2011, having him come up in August is not going to get him to arbitration any sooner.

The Braves will be OK. That doesn’t mean we won’t miss Chipper, but I think we have enough to get us into the playoffs. I do think we need to bring Freeman up and stick him on 1st base. Glaus is just too far gone. He looks like he may fall down anytime when he’s running the bases. C’mon Chipper, go ahead and go under the knife and start the healing process and rehab so you can come back in ‘11.

Erik at 2:43, I gotta ask: Are you basing your argument about moving Glaus to third purely on dated Sabermetrics, or have you actually seen Glaus play since the All-Star break? Who cares what he did the last time he played third years back? Today, he can barely hobble around a ballfield, and he plays a non-descript first base because there’s nowhere else to put him, since this is the National League and there’s no DH slot available. Chipper is Nureyev in comparison. Glaus either plays first or he sits.

Kind of a big salary but Chippers pay is now on the insurance books so they may not be an issue??? But Betimet can come cheap and is the type of player they like. Switch hitting and plays all over…okay, I’m repeating myself.

Bring up Freeman now and as John Fogerty said, “Put me in coach, I’m ready to play”. Platoon Freeman and Glaus at 1st, the tough lefties (Hamels) will eat him alive. Send Martinez down, he hasn’t pitched in a week, so evidently they don’t need him. Prado will be back next week, move Gonzalez to 3rd, put Omar at short. Send Hernandez down and bring up Thurston, he’s more of a utility guy than Diory. Platoon Diaz and Hinske in left because we’re going to need more pop in the lineup with Chipper out. Also, platoon Ankiel and Melky in center. The strength of this team has to be the bench play during the playoff stretch run. When the roster expands in 3 weeks, bring up 5 or 6 everyday players and 5 or 6 pitchers. If an everyday player or a pitcher needs the 8th or 9th inning off, or even a day off to rest for the end of September when we play the Phillies again, then do it. Don’t worry about the cost of carrying so many players, that’s what the rule is for.

Sorry for Chipper.
About Freeman, a pennant race is not the time to bring in a rookie. We have to go to the waiver wire.”
You see, I never have understood that logic, and it goes against what the Braves have actually done in the past. They brought up Andruw in 1996, who started in A ball that year, at age 19, with nowhere near the experience of Freeman. He did ok, didn’t he? Two homers in the WS that year? In 1991 they brought up Wohlers. In mid-year 2005, they brought up McCann and Frenchy from AA ball! Again, nowhere near the experience of Freeman. And Freddie came up the same time as Jason, Jason only moving ahead of him at mid-year last year. I just don’t understand why people think a mediocre waiver wire option is more attractive than a bona fide AAA star, a major prospect, having a great season.

Not sure if Prado will get the call. Depends on how his finger effects his throws. Infante would be a more realistic choice if they stay with their current roster. Glaus is not an option. Neither is Thurston. I’d like to see Blaylock signed and back up at both corners. I can’t see getting in panic mode and trading away multiple prospects for a rental player when this team still has holes that weren’t addressed prior to the break. Sorry Ankiel has been awful on offense and Farnsworth is being himself. Look at his previous three year stats. Wren went after a half season flash. Anyway….
The biggest issue is there are no 3B prospects in the minors and haven’t been for years. You’d think that someone would have thought Chipper would retire at some point and groom someone for a replacement. Maybe that was Wren’s thoughts by drafting three this year. Little late.

I was born in 1981, so Dale Murphy was my favorite Brave as I played my first few years in little league. I was distraught when they traded him; my guy was now a Phillie? Say it ain’t so.
But Chipper’s been my man for the last 15 years. I had his minor league baseball card (I believe it was a Junior USA card) and heard all about him on the sports talk radio my dad listened to. Couldn’t wait for him to come up to the big leagues. I was crushed in 1994 when, as a 12-year-old boy, I saw him go down to the ground with the ACL injury, ending his season. I was upset when Nomo was voted the Rookie of the Year in 1995, although Chipper got a ring, so that eased it some.
16 seasons. 1 of the 2 constants in Braves baseball, even after Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz had thrown pitched for other teams. Chipper and Bobby, together for all of those years. So sad that their manager-player relationship should have to end this way. When I saw Chip leaving the field the other night, I had a feeling I may have witnessed his final play as a Major League Baseball player. I’ll be wishing the best for Chipper and his family.

Chipper needs to stay in the dugout for inspiration and leadership for the rest of the season. Most of his power is gone so I don’t think they are severely hurt by using Infante and Conrad who have good averages and certainly can provide as many singles and doubles as Chipper has been giving us. The outside additions have been busts, unfortunately. Ankiel can’t hit and is one of the worst baserunners I have seen in some time. He’s a good late-inning defensive player at best. Gonzales is underwhelming. Glaus is a gamer, but has been abondoned by his body. Farnsworth hasn’t changed. I never thought I would covet LaRoche, but he looks like Lou Gehrig next to what we have now. I’ve seen all the bad baseball I can stand in the last couple of weeks & I can’t believe we can make it to the playoffs if this continues.

I hear a lot of comments about comparing Chipper Jones to Micky Mantle since they are widely considered two of the greatest switch hitters in history. I didn’t think the numbers would be close, but I was wrong.
Games / Runs / Hits / 2B / 3B / HR / RBI / SB / BB / SO / BA / OBP
Mantle 2401 / 1676 / 2415 / 344 / 72 / 536 / 1509 / 153 / 1733 / 1710 / .298 / .421
Jones 2261 / 1505 / 2490 / 493 / 37 / 436 / 1491 / 147 / 1404 / 1278 / .306 / .405
Chipper has put up very close numbers, especially considering he played in less games.

I am using Sabermetrics and common sense. Glaus’ body type has not changed since he has been a player granted his knee problems probably slowed him down a bit but 3rd base is not the most agile of positions. See Aramis Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval. It is about instincts, reaction time and arm strength.
Glaus has been SHAKY at first and I think part of that is the fact that he is old no doubt but also because he doesnt feel comfortable there. For Example how many times has he misplayed a pick off attempt and let the ball get by him.
He might not have the best range but I will bet once he is back at his old position his instincts and quick reflexes will surprise you. I figure having a 1B and 3B who are comfortable at their positions and add pop is better than Glaus shaky at 1B and Infante or Prado at 3B.
But hey If I am wrong and he is just AWFUL then he still probably isnt going to give up mush more than a run every 10 games. (Which is -4 for the rest of the season) I think the addition of Freeman to the roster is worth alot more than 4 runs the rest of the season.

Erik,
But Infante is going to play everyday now somewhere. And so is Prado when he comes back. So they are the logical choice to play 2b and 3b. So moving Glaus to 3rd really isn’t even a consideration in my opinion. And that is even before the debate about how bad he currently looks moving around. The only other question would be, Prado at first and Glaus at 3rd? Why even move them around?
Mutts,
Brooks is a darn fine bench player. Let’s leave it at that. He’s not a starter. He can have some starts against right handed pitching, but not against lefties. He’s numbers right handed are ugly.

Wish you the best Chipper, but you’ll be 39 next year and coming off major knee surgery. Take it as a sign and retire on top. Go spend some time with your kids and enjoy your family. You’ve had a great career and one day will make it into the hall of fame. Your body just isn’t up to the challenge anymore.

Erik,
From your lips to God’s ear. You’re an optimistic man. I don’t doubt Glaus’ desire, or even his instincts and arm, but I just can’t get past the image of those shaky knees shambling around the field. And, I fear his fielding would cost much more than a run every four games, directly and indirectly.

Okay, so lots of writers are writing us off. After reflection, I think we still have as good a shot as we did before Chipper’s injury to win it.
Comments are right, that these Braves have been finding ways to win. More importantly, it’s been contributions from everyone on the team. Our bench grows a little weaker, and we rely a little more on manufacturing runs vs. the long ball, but we really aren’t tearing it up with the long ball.
Our big problem lately has been hitting with runners in scoring position. And, the last few games we have seen an improvement there. With Chipper out, it’s more like a one less duck on the pond scenario than losing the guy driving everyone in.
If we are seeing a turnaround in scoring the runs we get in position, we are every bit the team we were before the injury.
Thoughts?

Big League players are always being knocked for their high salaries. Well, given the chance, would any of you take your regular $50,000 a year to play if you were as good as Chipper has been. Why do some of you call him greedy when you would take the 15 mil per year in a second and not even think about it. Chipper has played his heart out (try comparing him to some other pros). He accepted less money than he could have gotten from the Braves and even less than on the free agent market. How many players are there in the last 30 years that have only been on 1 team? If that is not loyalty then I don’t know what is.

This is a big blow, but I think we can get by. Prado will probably go to 3rd (base and in the lineup), Infante will stay at 2nd and probably stay as the lead off man. Conrad becomes the new infield utility guy to replace Infante. It’s too bad Chip went down now, he was looking really good the past month, best he’s been since 2008.
Anyone else notice Philly moans over injuries all the time, but we have had more injuries?
Chip- gone for the season
Heyward- had a 15 day DL stint
Prado- 15 day DL
Medlen- gone for season (probably)
Escobar- 15 day DL earlier in the season
O’Flaherty- missed over a month now with mono
Matt Diaz- missed a month and a half
Yet somehow we’re still in first place…

@ShaunC. The Braves of the ninety’s went to 5 world series. 3 with chipper and 2 without. The teams of 91 & 92 did not have the talent of the latter but had more of a will to win than the 99 team. The best teams of 95 & 96 did have Chipper and did win the WS (95) and lost (96) but the 91 & 92 could have won with a couple of breaks. The 99 team was not even close. I believe that this team does not lose as much as those teams would have lost because Chipper is still good but not great as in those years. The starting pitching was better then but the bullpen now puts to shame the bullpens on the ninety’s. I hope Philly will look at Chipper’s injury and become overconfident. That may give the Braves the edge to beat them out.

that’s tough news for Chipper, tough news for braves fans everywhere, he will do anything he can for this team, and that is still a good thing – i have to be half full here because i still have to believe in my team. we’ve got an experienced third baseman playing first, and we can call up Freddie and spell him with the Hinsker. Meanwhile, we get a second hitting coach riding the pine in Chipper Jones. The dude knows hitting. Tough break, but let’s see what happens with the team

whoever replaces him will be a better defensive player, have a higher BA, be a better base runner and have the same amount of power(not much). Prado at third and Infante at second makes them a better team. Throw in Freeman at first whilr you’re at it….

Okay, but let’s be honest here… Chipper Jones today is not the same Chipper Jones we knew years ago when he was a terror for the rest of the league. While it seemed he was coming around lately and that will be missed, about the only production we got from him was OBP. Otherwise he was a liability on the field, he wasn’t much of a runner, and he of course we all know he lost his power stroke. He can be replaced.
Put in Martin Prado at 3B with Omar Infante at 2B (who essentially would be his replacement) or use Brookes Conrad. Of course he doesn’t have the OBP or BA but he sure has power. We could even put Troy Glaus and 3B with Eric Hinske at 1B. We are fortunate that we have a lot of options.
This team is really deep. Don’t sweat this.
I love Chipper and all that he has done for the Braves–don’t get me wrong. I’m only talking about what this team needs this year to win. Chipper can be replaced. His career is winding down, he will be a hall-of-famer, and we can all give him the great parade down Peach Tree when he decides to finally hang ‘em up. Sorry you had to go out this year like this!

Chipper Jones will more than likely retire he has nothing else to prove he’s a hall of famer. I hate that he got this injury that ends his season I hope for a speedy recovery for him. The Braves need to find a replacement I would move Troy Glaus to play 3rd and call Arizona and see if they can acquire Adam LaRoche back and put him at 1st base.

If Chipper elects to have surgery, that tells me he’s coming back. Science tells us, that it takes about 6 months for the muscles/brain to recover from this type of surgery – putting him back to about March/Spring Training to come back – Braves should still be very competitive next year. If he waits until October/Nov to have surgery, he’s out until May, at the earliest. If there is no meniscal damage, he may can get by in a couple of weeks and play on it. If he is going to retire, it may be an option to take that risk. Either way, I’m depressed now…

Glaus to 3rd and Hinske to 1st was the obvious play before the season started.
But Infante is a much better fielder than either of those two and has been swinging a great bat for a while now. He’ll get the nod at 3B until he cools off.
Glaus remains at 1B for now.
And I don’t think Freeman gets called up until September. He might get the chance to show what he can do then and make the postseason roster, He may end up a great player, but he’s only got 15 homers in 100 games in the minors this year, and only has 37 BB to 71 Ks. His average is over 300 but is OBP is barely over .350. Those numbers won’t immediately translate well to the majors.

I heard about this at work. I’m not 100% shocked, but I am surprised. I wonder who’ll they’ll get if they trade for anyone or what will they do internally. Here’s two options I was thinking at work….
1. Prado at 3B and Infante at 2B rest of the way. However, that knocks out some depth.
2. Try to nab Ty Wigginton in a trade.

As a person and former allstar chipper was the man…… and as a person i feel deeply for him….. or the Braves organization you are pitiful….Traded ESCOBAR to get a compliment to the non production of Chipper, have no options at 3rd base in the system…… Most clubs have a solid 2 deep. I love infante but he is a decent 2nd baeman and decent outfield…. he best talent is the ability to spell everyone and his offense.
Hinske may be the best option but Prado needs to move to first or go back to alternating between first and third in a Glaus Hinske platoon.
How long have we needed a left fielder? we have not had a left feilder since Chipper proved he was not an outfielder….. 1st baseman, center fielder….. we got the minors stocked wit pitching talent…… but can not field the ball and not one person in AA or AAA that can pay at the major league level. We proved with all those division titles that the old guys can win a division but when the athletes make it to post season they dominate and the Liebrants and Lonnie Smiths give up games after great seasons……..
Management has failed the posters knew and expected Wagner, Chipper, Saito, and Glaus to fall apart….. posters are 50% and the season is not over….. I look for AGon to come up lame out of embarrasment!

Thank goodness Prado is coming back next week. I don’t think the team will miss a beat with Prado at 3B and Infante full-time at 2B. I still don’t care how you chop it up, Troy Glaus is the key to the Braves winning the division. If he hits, they’ll win. If he doesn’t, teams will pitch around McCann and this offense will continue to sputter along at 2-4 runs per game. He’s hit the ball hard the past few games, so hopefully that’s a sign that he’s getting hot again.
As far as next year, Chipper was already in rough shape the past few years without the knee injury. Can’t imagine that he can come back next year in good enough shape to contribute a whole season. I hope Chipper retires, so the Braves can know they have an extra $15 million to go hard into the free agent market this winter. Wren will be handcuffed if he doesn’t know whether to exclude or count Chipper in the budget.

He can definately play temporarily without an ACL, I did it for years mainly because of a misdiagnosis from a certain Osteopath. There are times when the knee will slip out of joint but with a strong core of muscles around the knee you can play. I’ve got to have another ACL refit know, Dr. John Garrett did my first and promised the new one would not rupture but it did, the reason for no pain is because you don’t have nerves running to a reconstruction, no nerves no pain. Did I mention I tore my second one while being paralyzed on the left side, you can tear one in a million ways.I continued playing all kind of sports knowing something was wrong but didn’t have the home environment that would see about such, it did rob me of my foot speed though.

You know . . . I know Chipper’s nagging injuries the last few years have brought him much criticism from those who thought he should have just played through them. But athletes get old and many times they simply wear down. It seems just like the other day that he came to the bigs with the promise of becoming a special player for the Bravos. Well he has fulfilled that prediction in every way imaginable. Personally I think he should come back for one last season . . . perhaps as a reserve . . . and let us show him our appreciation for a great career.

It sucks that he got hurt, but the Braves still have a World Series to win. They still have to go on. The way I see it, there are four dependable bats left on this team — Prado, Infante, McCann, and Heyward (in that order). Hitting them 1-4 in the order every day makes sense. Beyond that, you have Gonzalez at SS (who is hit or miss), Glaus/Hinske at 1B (hit or miss), Ankiel/Cabrera at CF (hit or miss), and whoever plays the position Infante isn’t playing on that given day.
What that lineup lacks in talent it makes up for in versatility, which helps the Braves if they want to go out and acquire another bat. Jose Guillen is currently designated for assignment, and would instantly be the 5th best bat in that lineup if he were acquired. The Braves have the luxury of not pigeonholing themselves into looking for a 3B to replace Chipper due to their versatility. Bring in Guillen, play him in left and bat him 5th, and then you don’t have to rely so much on someone like Glaus or Gonzalez in the postseason. I’d be surprised if it took much to bring Guillen here.

If Freddie Freeman can come in and produce, then I’m all for bringing him in, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to rely on him to produce from day one in light of Heyward’s ups and downs over the course of the season (Heyward being a more highly touted prospect than Freeman).

Hate to see your season end this way. As far as ending your career, you only know what the off-season entails. YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED. However, season is not lost. We’ve got Conrad, and Infante to sub at 3b. Chipper, the team could surely use your moral support in the dugout. I’ve watched ya since the days in Macon, and have nothing but kudos for ya man. Folks if Glaus goes to third we may never get to bat in the first inning as the opposing team will bunt down the thrid base line about 3,000 times and Glaus can’t move enough to get anyone out. He can’t even move at first base to field a ball thrown over by the pitcher. Bravos can’t afford to prop Glaus up anymore with Chippie’s bat gone. Glaus can take the bench and come in to pinch hit when we need someone to hit into a double play for us.

Although CJones may wish to try to come back next year and go out on his terms, that doesn’t bode well for the Braves if they allow that to happen. Next year is a new year with some new players, new manager, and hopefully a desire to be the new Braves team, not tied to the past. I’m sure that some of you watched CJones this year in the dugout as other players were beginning to star and his demeanor was of someone seeing time pass him by. If he chooses not to try and come back, that doesn’t mean he surrenders to the difficult rehabilitation work, but that he comes to terms with the end of his career.

I am perplexed by all of the naysayers and pessimists. You would think the team has lost every game that Chipper has missed. That is simply not the case. Infante can handle third, as can Prado and Conrad; Glaus cannot (no range with his knees). Chipper’s bat will surely be missed, but its not the end of the season. Guys will have to get hot again (mainly Troy).
Some so-called Braves fans look at the Braves and see nothing but deficiencies, and see the Phillies as the prototypical powerhouse. Last I checked, the Phils were in 2nd place behind the Braves. Have some faith in the home team.

yes but lets be real here!! yes chipper has been hitting the ball, how many of those hits have been with men on base and how many have been with bases loaded? like 99% of his hits or home runs come with bases loaded, and when bases or full and we need him to get a hit he either stikes out, grounds out, or pops up!! so his “hot bat” is a matter a variable that is getting manipulated to show he is doing something that he is NOT doing as always!!

Fortunate for Chipper that his folks were in town. They’ll be able to offer him a good sounding board as he mulls over his options. If he doesn’t have surgery right away, maybe he’s leaning towards a Kirk Gibson-type pinch-hitter slot. That’s not the best option, takes a position away from an able-bodied guy on the bench. But…….the roster does expand during the playoffs, hmmmmm……..

9-8 dodgers. no one out. runners on 1st & 2nd. looks like only a 2 game lead in the division.

Are you freaking kidding me?? Damn Dodgers.. That would have been huge.. A 3 game lead sounds a lot better than a 2 1/2 game lead…

Glaus ain’t going anywhere… he’s about as mobile as a vending machine. His career died a horrible death a coupla years ago, but apparently nobody has had the heart to tell him. They shoot horses, don’t they?

As much as I think Chipper is the best Brave of my lifetime and a sure fire hall of famer, I think Mickey Mantle might be considered the greatest switch hitter ever by pretty much everyone on the face of the planet.

Do NOT underestimate Brooks Conrad. He acquitted himself very nicely at third and at bat on Tuesday evening. He’s the new blood the Braves so desperately need right now.

Why in the world do you people want Glaus at third. He can barely move with his hurt knees and his batting sucks. Putting him at third would be like pouring gas on a fire to put it out instead of water. All of you need to get real. The Braves need to go out and find a third baseman and sit Glaus until his knees heal. I hate it for Chipper but this is not the time to give up on hte Braves.

That’s an awfully big bat we lose in the lineup, and leadership off the field.

Only Chipper know what is best for him and we should support his decision whatever it is. He will be a Hall of Famer and go down in baseball history as one of the best, if not the best, third baseman both defensively and offensively as well as one of the greatest switch hitters of all time. I feel priveledged to have watched both Mickey Mantel and Chipper Jones excell at the bat!!!

Chipper has to come back for one more season. Whether he’ll start or not doesn’t matter. He deserves a farewell tour of his own. He’s earned it.
Really?

Braves fan are dumb…
Glaus to third??/ The guy cant even put a belt on by himself, and you want him to play third?
Prado to third and Omar at second, infireld is solid.
Wren isnt goign to speed up the clock on Freeman, aint gonna happen because he wants to ensure we get another year out of him down the road. The only way Freeman comes up is if Glaus gets hurt, which he wont do, he will just keep hitting into double plays and botching throws fromt he pitcher…oh yeah throw in a meaningless home run every now and then.
Braves are fine, Phillies are scared of our pitching…Pitching wins in September and October and we have potentially 4 #1 starters (giving Minors big props, Lowe is horrible)

Why all this talk about whether or not Chipper will dedicate himself to rehab his knee? Of course he will. He has to walk on that knee for the next 40 or so years. His first priority should be to commit to the rehab for his own good. If in the process of rehab he determines he can play next year, he comes back to get more of the $28 million left in his contract. If not, he retires and waits for Cooperstown to call in 5 years

Hey guys.. takes more than one guy to make a team..need all 25 to contribute..so.. we need to keep the bench strong and make the right choice for third.

After thinking about it Chipper will come back. It is hard to leave that kind of money on the table. Maybe Chipper can rehab and start taking ground balls at 1B for next year. That would save his knees a little and the Braves from having to re sign Glaus. Remember when fans wanted to extend Glaus’s conract another two years. Yikes!! By the way, I hope the Dodgers have mentally checked out after that debacle last night in Philly. That was terrible. I would love a three out of four or four game sweep.

Glaus is dead on his feet. It must be true that good hitting starts with good legs. I remember one of the Braves TV announcers, I don’t remember exactly which one, suggesting that Glaus might be an MVP candidate this year. He is one of 6 NL players who will have been player of the month this year. Apparently he has always been a very streaky hitter.

How ’bout Chipper Jones as hitting coach (even as a roving instructor between hunting trips)? He has gone through and come out of slumps several times. If he can correct his own swing maybe he can coach others. He doesn’t need the money but the fans would love to see it.
