A day later, Chipper cautiously optimistic

HOUSTON – So much news to report that I won’t have time to do a normal, overly long blog, so let’s just give you a quick rundown before we get down to writing longer stories or notebook items on each of these subjects.

chipper_0811_647923g

Chipper is helped off the field by Braves trainer Jeff Porter after knee injury Tuesday night.

First, the Chipper Jones update.

If you missed it, he injured his left knee making a terrific stop, plant and throw defensive play in the sixth inning Tuesday and spent several minutes on the ground in pain. Everyone in the Braves dugout feared the worst, but there’s cautious optimism with Chipper and the team that it might not be a severe, season-ending injury.

He didn’t have any significant swelling last night after the game and still didn’t this morning, strengthening his belief that it’s not an ACL injury, and he hopes it’s not a major injury to any other ligament. But he won’t know until he gets an MRI on Thursday in Atlanta.

Jones tore the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in 1994 as a rookie during spring training and had reconstructive surgery that forced him to miss the entire season. He said the knee “blew up” to the size of a basketball with major swelling almost immediately, and that he heard a loud pop that he thought everyone in the ballpark could have heard.

This time, he said he felt a “distinct pop,” but not anything like the sound and sensation of that ‘94 incident. And Braves head trainer Jeff Porter tested Chipper’s knee on the field Tuesday night and again in the clubhouse and told him the ACL was stable. So it’d surprise everyone if it’s any sort of serious ACL injury.

It might be a posterior cruciate ligament or medial collateral ligament injury, and if there’s no significant tear Jones could possibly return from either of those in relatively short time and without surgery, though he might need to play in a brace of some kind.

He and the Braves just want to get him back in the lineup as soon as possible, because he’s been hitting well for nearly two months after his sluggish early season, and Chipper said today that he’s having fun again and the team is winning, and he really wants to get back out there and remain part of it.

He’s hit .307 with seven homers and a .907 OPS in 44 games since June 15, after batting .228 with three homers and a .716 OPS in 51 games through June 14.

His outlook has changed so much in the past two months that when I asked him this morning if he’d consider going through another lengthy rehab if it’s a major knee injury, he said he’d have to. Two months ago, I can almost guarantee you his answer would’ve been something along the lines of “No way, I’d retire.”

He seemed in good spirits after the game, all things considered, and again this morning. After getting treatment, he put on his uniform and went out to watch batting practice, standing on the step-up behind the batting cage and chatting with teammates.

He’s walking without crutches or a brace, albeit with a limp. But he was able to go up the dugout steps without any difficult, for what that’s worth.

Martin Prado is progressing well in his recovery from a broken right pinkie and is going to test it with live batting practice on Friday before they decide the next step. The All-Star second baseman is eligible to come off the DL on Sunday, and manager Bobby Cox said, when I asked if Prado would need any rehab games, “He hasn’t forgotten how to hit.”

In other words, if Prado wants to play as soon as he’s eligible, then he’ll probably be permitted to. Still, to me it seems more likely that he’ll go hit in one or two minor-league games before he comes back.

Prado said this morning that he thinks he’ll need to, that it would be better to do a brief minor-league rehab stint before he jumps back in to face big-league pitcher in game situations, since the only hitting he’s done in two weeks has been off a tee in the past several days.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Prado if Chipper goes on the DL, because the Braves might decide to keep Omar Infante at second base an have Prado play third. Prado’s a good third baseman, better defensively than Infante at the position.

I watched him do some throwing this morning, and he didn’t seem to have any problems or show any discomfort, that sort of thing.

Infante (left) has done a fine job filling in for Prado (right), and could stay at 2B if Braves need Prado to fill in for Chipper.

Infante (left) has done a fine job filling in for Prado (right), and could stay at 2B if Braves need Prado to fill in for a while at 3B for Chipper.

Jason Heyward is out of the lineup for the second consecutive day with a sore right knee, which was wrapped this morning as he sat a few lockers down from Chipper. But there are no indications that this is anything to be concerned about, and Heyward is expected to be back in the lineup Friday for the series opener against the Dodgers, after the team’s day off Thursday.

Heyward said he could have played today but that Cox wanted to be cautious and give him another day to rest, so he’d have three full days including the off day.

The big rookie hurt his knee Monday when it hit the ground as he attempted to make a sliding catch on a bloop single that landed in shallow right field. He said it was sore during pregame drills and batting practice Tuesday, so he figured he should say something to the trainer rather than risk making the situation worse by playing on it.

Eric O’Flaherty threw batting practice for about 10 minutes this morning and felt good, the final step before he goes out on what’s expected to be a brief rehab assignment beginning Friday. O’Flaherty has been on the DL since July 10 recovering from mononucleosis, and Cox said he needs to get his strength back with a short rehab stint before he comes off the DL.

He wouldn’t say if that could be just a few appearances or more, and I don’t think the Braves have determined that. They’ll probably wait to see how O’Flaherty feels after a couple of appearances, but they obviously could use him back in the bullpen to help ease the load off Jonny Venters, who’s working in about two out of every three games these days.

OK, that’s it. We’re about to start this series finale, which features a helluva pitching matchup with Tommy Hanson facing Astros lefty Wandy Rodriguez. Matt Diaz is hitting cleanup for the fifth consecutive game against a lefty.

Hanson is 0-2 in his past three starts despite a 1.33 ERA and .184 opponents’ average, with six runs (three earned) allowed in 20-1/3 innings. He’s 1-3 with a 2.05 ERA in his past seven starts, with two or fewer earned runs allowed in six. The Braves scored two runs or fewer while he was in five of his past seven starts, including 0, 1 and 2 runs in the past three.

Against the Astros, Hanson is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two starts against the Astros, including eight scoreless innings of five-hit ball in a Sept. 9 win at Minute Maid Park.

Rodriguez is 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA in his past eight starts, and 4-1 with a 1.06 ERA in his past five home starts. In those past five at Minute Maid, he has a .154 opponents’ average with 18 hits (two homers), eight walks and 35 strikeouts in 34 innings.

He’s 2-2 with a 4.57 ERA in seven starts vs. the Braves, including a May 1 loss at Atlanta when he allowed 10 hits and five runs (two earned) in five innings. The Braves will miss Chipper, who’s 4-for-15 with two homers against the lefty. Troy Glaus, who snapped his 39-game homer drought Tuesday night, is 6-for-16 with a homer against Rodriguez.

♣ Oh, just one other thing: The Braves lead the majors with 18 wins in final at-bat, and Brooks Conrad had the winning RBI in three of those, via a grand slam, a suicide squeeze bunt and Tues’s two-run, ninth-inning homer in the stirring come-from behind win. All six of his homers have come in the eighth inning or later, and Braves teammates just raved about him last night and today. I’m going to write something about him today and use a lot of those quotes and stats.

Enjoy this one from The Man in Black, and this video to go with it.

“I STILL MISS SOMEONE” by Johnny Cash

At my door the leaves are falling

A cold wild wind Will come

Sweethearts walk by together

And I still miss someone

I go out on a party

And look for a little fun

But I find a darkened corner

‘Cause I still miss someone

Oh, no I never got over those blues eyes

I see them every where

I miss those arms that held me

When all the love was there

I wonder if she’s sorry

For leavin’ what we’d begun

There’s someone for me somewhere

And I still miss someone

Oh, no I never got over those blues eyes

I see them every where

I miss those arms that held me

When all the love was there

I wonder if she’s sorry

For leavin’ what we’d begun

There’s someone for me somewhere

And I still miss someone

and I still miss someone

If the baseball Gods are frowning on the Bravos, do you think there is a slight chance the Braves move Glaus back over to 3rd, and bring up freeman? — Nick ‘n Nash

No, I can’t see them doing that. Not the way Glaus is moving at 1B lately. Can’t imagine how he’d be able to make plays required of a 3B, charging in for bunts and soft rollers, going hard to his left and right and planting to make strong throw across field, etc.

No Kershaw in ATL is a major plus for the Braves…

Would like to get 3 of 4 if we can and then put some distance between us and the Phils on the homestand.

Philly has certainly dealt with some major injuries this season, there’s no doubt, but it’s not like the Braves have been able to pencil in the same 8 every day. I guess between the play of guys like Hinske, Infante, and Conrad, having the bench players start becomes a non-story since there’s not so much of a drop off. Fine by me, I guess. Let the northerners keep bitchin’.

Um yeah, if Glaus can’t stay in front of a 12-hopper in the 8th inning last night, who really believes he can play 3b again?

Yeah, thats not gonna happen…there’d be a better chance of Freddie coming up and returning to his natural position of 3b.

Any serious knee injury, even a sprain, that may allow Chipper to return by Sept. 1, may be just as serious or worse than a season ending injury that would require surgery. The legs are very important in the swing, and playing with a compromised knee would take away a lot of the leverage in the swing. The poster child for playing with weak knees is troy glaus — power down, weak groujnders up, and range miniscule. Carlos Beltran playing with a brace is another example of how ineffective a player can be without a strong foundation in his legs. A Chipper playing on one leg or with a brace, might take away playing time from Conrad or Omar who might be more effective. If Chipper returns this year, the guy that comes back could be a shadow of the guy we saw the past month.

Jim-

I agree…legs mean everything for a guy with any power…using just your arms won’t get you anywhere and Troy is a prime example of this…

If Chipper misses any time whatsoever or goes to the DL, we probably go with Prado at 3b (once he returns) and Infante at 2b….

I still feel like Chipper going down provides logic that we can even less afford Troy’s prolonged power outages…

DOB, I fear we’ve missed our window of opportunity to bring up Freeman early. Now that Glaus has hit with RISP and then a homer, I’m sure Bobby will take this as a sign he’s coming out of it. Couple that with Chippers injury and I can imagine Bobby won’t want to upset the apple cart by bringing in another youngster rather than staying with the vet. Why am I not an all-star? Just my take, and I do wish him well.

Shaun, that’s true, but I don’t remember opponents taking advantage of Maddux the way they do Hanson.

Also, Maddux was able to get away with that because he was one of the best pitchers ever to toe the rubber. Hanson hasn’t reached that level yet.

Jeff321, the problem is when you have to call out one specific positive thing you said. That’s an indicator that you don’t do it very much. That’s like saying Jo-Jo Reyes is a good pitcher because he pitched well that one time in 2008.

Since the agent and Jeff are now a we maybe the agent should explain to Jeff that “they” will soon be free agents when “they” are non tendered. If any team wants “them” to play everyday then that team can sign “them” at that time. Complaining and demanding a trade will not help “their” impending free agency. When I saw the lineup today, I was hoping people would get a chance to see that Tommy hasn’t really been giving the C a chance to throw out baserunners. I think he’s actually got McCann trying to overthrow, which has led to some errors lately. Mac’s just gotta say I’ll do my best and, if I don’t get them, I don’t get them, though. A stolen base is not good. The throw going into the OF or foul territory (at 3B) and letting the runner get an extra base is really bad.

In hindsight, getting nothing out of the Diaz double to lead off the sixth really hurts. I’m still not sure why Conrad didn’t bunt him over to third so we could have a chance to get him in with one out. When you’re not scoring runs, you HAVE to do little things like that.

Instead, Conrad flies out, and Ankiel and Hanson strike out.

But for Tommy’s single, the game would be over. Amazing.

ALL IS LOST

August 11th, 2010
4:42 pm

from MLB trade rumors

In a move that has amused those who follow the New York Mets closely, Jeff Francoeur has gone public with his demands to be traded following New York’s decision to platoon him with young outfielder Fernando Martinez.

Despite a season line of .241/.294/.385, Francoeur apparently believes a major league team would play him regularly at a position, right field, that averages production of .271/.344/.447. Indeed, Francoeur’s line is well below the MLB average at second base (.266/.331/.393).

But we have yet to see how Francoeur’s demand for a trade stands up to history. It isn’t easy to find comparable performance among right fielders in recent years, and it’s even harder to find any who were traded after performing as poorly as Francoeur.

Since 2000, just 31 of the 165 right fielders to amass at least 300 plate appearances posted an OPS+ below 100. Of those 31, only four checked in lower than Francoeur’s 2010 OPS+ mark of 82: Richard Hidalgo’s 2005 (81), Jeromy Burnitz’s 2002 (80), Austin Kearns’ 2008 (67) and Jeff Francoeur’s own 2008 (72).

Kearns followed his 2008 with a similarly poor 2009 before the Nationals let him walk after last season. Burnitz followed 2002 with a half-season of a 139 OPS+ for the 2003 Mets, earning a trade to Los Angeles for Kole Strayhorn, Jose Diaz and Victor Diaz. Hidalgo never played in the majors again, and Francoeur followed his 2008 with a half-season of 68 OPS+ hitting in 2009, earning a trade to the Mets for Ryan Church.

In other words Jeff Francoeur is the only one from that group to be traded for anything at all. Incidentally, four of the 31 player seasons in right field below 100 OPS+ are from Francoeur. Only three others are on the list more than once: Juan Encarnacion (three times), Alex Rios (twice), Hidalgo (twice) and Burnitz (twice).

Encarnacion is an instructive comparison. His career OPS+ of 97 is better than, but similar to, Francoeur’s 91. Encarnacion had additional value because he lacked a platoon split (amazingly, his OPS against both lefties and righties was .758) and had the ability to play center field.

In the middle of an 84 OPS+ season in 2004 at age 28, a year after he posted a 97 OPS+, the Marlins acquired Encarnacion as part of a six-player deal from the Dodgers. He went on to start 46 of Florida’s remaining 58 games. His salary ($3.6MM) was roughly equivalent to the $5MM Francoeur earns in 2010.

So there is precedent. It happened one other time.

Among those under 100 OPS+ in right field, Alex Rios had a 96 OPS+ last year when the White Sox took him from the Blue Jays and agreed to pay his entire salary (at $61MM, many times as much as remains on Francoeur’s deal). But Rios had three seasons of 120, 122 and 112 OPS+ in 2006-2008 under his belt, success Francoeur hasn’t seen since his half-season debut in 2005.

Overwhelmingly, the players performing as poorly as Francoeur, or even demonstrably better, are simply let go, often never to surface again. Trot Nixon’s 96 OPS+ in 2006 represented his last season as a regular player. So did Danny Bautista’s 85 in 2004 and Derek Bell’s 98 in 2000. Jose Guillen’s 89 in 2000 got him sent back to the minor leagues by Tampa Bay, then released.

There’s also that pesky question: who would Francoeur replace in another team’s regular lineup? Of the 20 right fielders in MLB who have played more than half their games in right field this year, Francoeur ranks dead last in OPS+ with 82. The four closest to him? Jay Bruce (96), Ben Zobrist (98), Hunter Pence (102) and Ichiro Suzuki (107). It is safe to say Francoeur won’t be replacing any of those players. He’d make a decent platoon partner with Bruce, but… right. Platooning led Francoeur to demand a trade in the first place.

In short, the answer to the title of this piece is: not reasonable at all. Not reasonable in light of his 2010 performance, not reasonable in terms of other right fielders, not reasonable comparatively through recent history.

Don’t know if this has been brought up (haven’t been reading today), but…

DOB,

If you get a chance will you ask Glaus after the game today if his back is bothering him? Every time they showed him standing/walking/running, he looked like he was in pain. Might just be sore, but he didn’t look comfortable.

I know he’s not the best runner usually, but today he actually looked like something was bothering him.

Now let’s hope Bobby pitches Billy IN ROTATION WITH his other capable relievers. If not because Billy is obviously not as fresh as he was 2 months ago, just to get the others more in the habit of being in save situations.
Then again, Bobby never caught on about Greg Norton maybe not being the best choice for a pinch hitter either.

As for “hating”, please grow up. I want to see Billy and the whole team do well, I just think Bobby sticks with guys a little too much, whether it’s pinch-hitter extraordinaire Greg Norton last year, or letting Greg Maddux pitch into the 9th in the World Series.

And kudos to Bobby for making that pinch move, Matty D is my favorite but don’t think he would’ve hit that salami, so yeah for Bobby!!

I was laughing so hard when B-Mac came on to pinch hit. The right-handed reliever came in looking to face Matt Diaz, who hits less well against rightys but instead he gets to face left-handed slugger Brian McCann.

Houston manager Brad Mills got played by Bobby Cox.

Based on Omars consistency, I dont know how Cox can keep him out of lineup. Especially when Prad comes back.

Some people have been saying this for a while, but the Braves have been thriving on great luck this year. Let’s face it. The lineup isn’t that great (though it does a good job of getting on base), the defense is mediocre at best and terrible at its worst, and the team doesn’t have much speed. The pitching as a whole has been very good all season. The team has won many games in the last at-bat, but is only 16-17 in one-run games. That’s because the Braves generally win by multiple runs when they make their comebacks.

All I know is that the Braves have a very good record. That doesn’t mean anything in the postseason, but you have to have a record like that to get there. Will the luck continue? Who knows? It does sometimes.

Allen

Observing that the guy could use an occasional break if we’re depending on him in October, and that it would be good to give some of the other guys save experience is NOT the opposite of lightening up on Billy.

Caught Billy some slack will you………. A little bleeder to start the inning, and an extremely casual play by Diaz in left field allowed Pence to move to third. If Matty where aggressive in that play Pence wouldn’t have been at third base and the Braves would have gotten out of it without allowing a run.

Billy has 7 blown saves, for me he has 5 of them. The game against the Giants in which both Chipper and Alex made errors is not his fault. And today it was really bad luck, and Diaz not being aggressive.

In response:

1. In the past, yes, Farnsworth had an awful playoff game against the Astros in 2005, costing us pretty much the Division Series. Going into the post season, he did not have a blown save. So did you trust him when he got us into the playoffs? We very likely would have not gotten there without him.

2. Did you enjoy Chavez when he pitched for us this year? I don’t know about you, but several people hated Chavez and wanted him gone. The Braves complied; they sent him to hell (or Kansas City, as some refer it) and came back with Farnsworth. Seemed at the time a good swap, and I believe it will be proved before the year is out.

3. I don’t like Farnsworth personally as a player, would never be a member of his fan club, but I think he is a solid pickup. Throws hard, will pitch often, will save wear and tear on the bullpen hopefully. Give him a couple of games and let’s see how this turns out. I know 98% of the blog denizens wanted us to make a move. We did; let’s sit back and see how it works out, and maybe just avoid being so reactionary. I know it’s difficult.

Amid all the negatives–the knee injuries, the awful errors, the ridiculous loss in game one and giving away games two and three–one big positive rises to the top. The team showed the mental toughness that almost every fan (including me) did not have. They strapped it on again in those two games and got the runs back.

I’d say fans that live pitch to pitch and post things like this team is terrible or Tommy’s about to melt down have no confidence in the team. Makes you look like a idiot that’s all.

“3:03 pm–worst defensive team in the majors?”

Lately, they’ve beenb playing like it – and it should be a concern, for the stress it places upon an already taxed bullpen.

“3:55 pm–We’ve got to have the slowest team in major league baseball.”

They rank 24th in stolen bases in the MLB, and are just 5 SB’s from 27th – that’s a pretty sad commentary on our overall team speed. This is especially painful given our overall lack of power and slugging.

Honestly, CrazyTrade, I agree with LPad. Your one-man kangaroo court act speaks to some kind of inexplicable superiority complex, or at least some sense that you mistakenly think you are above the fray.

I, for one, am not impressed when you trash others. Inane or not, it’s an opinion blog; your sense of fascism as it relates to baseball knowledge and OPINION is not appreciated.

Amazing right. He can be dominant at times and somehow we never notice it on the blog – not like we do Huddy. I guess people trust Huddy or even JJ much more and with Hanson, well idiots are lining up to say he should be traded right now. old man: Lately, JJ has gone seven, so has Hanson, Hudson is soooooo dependable on that count, Medlen more than held his own, and even the kid Minor went six Monday night, allowing only three earned – a helluva first start.

Derek Lowe – a pitcher whose greatest claim to fame is eating innings in the absence of a sub-4.00 NL ERA – hasn’t been able to reach six innings in SIX of his past 8 starts; AND, has only hit 7 innings pitched in TWO of his past 10 starts.

What does this guy see in the mirror??? He is being paid #1 starter’s money AND HE DOESN’T EVEN EAT INNINGS LIKE HE IS REPUTED TO DO!!! Thanks to his half-assed performance on Sunday, the bullpen had to pitch 3.2 innings the day before a rookie starts a road game!!! An already abused Moylan had to come in for an ineffective Farnsworth(less) – after pitching in Sunday’s game – and allowed two hits that continued the deluge in that disasterous 7th.

The only thing Lowe-tard reminds me of is how galatically stupid Wren was to throw $60 mil for 4 years at this wasteoid!!!

Wren had to go after a pitcher. The only ones available were Lowe or Burnett. I think its safe to say he took the best option available. It amazes me how some of you ignorant people just utterly bash Wren at every opportunity without having the slightest clue how the business side of baseball works.

Remember, the deal for Jurrjens? That turned out pretty well.

Remember how everyone here railroaded Wren for signing Hudson to an extension instead of Vazquez? That worked out pretty well too.

From the article:

More Dewan: “People ask me: When do you believe eyes, when do you believe numbers? Well, with newer players, I tend to believe the eyes. We have such limited data — a quarter season, a half season — and so if some of the coaches and managers say, ‘This player is very good defensively but the numbers don’t show it yet,’ I tend to believe the evaluation. But as I start getting a full season of data, multiple seasons of data, when coaches say that a player is good defensively, if the numbers don’t show it, I go with the numbers. Maybe they’re seeing good skills applied on occasion. Maybe they’re seeing a few great plays. But the player is not good defensively.”
