Menlo- it is a little sad. The prognosis for “will he come back” will depend entirely on Chipper. Rob Neyer on ESPN has already given his “guess” that Chipper will go ahead and retire, but I’m not so sure…

The Braves are good this year – real good, one of the best teams Chipper’s ever played on. After 5 years OUT of the post-season, I think Chipper could TASTE it this year. If the Braves are eliminated OR if they do well in the post-season (in other words… I predict either way….) I think Chipper will want:
1. to be an active part of at least one more good Braves team through the playoffs.
2. to prove that he CAN come back from this injury at his relatively advanced age.

My 2 cents.

I have a feeling Wren will make a move to get somebody. Whether it’s somebody to platoon or an everyday 3rd baseman, I’m not sure on that. If I had to guess, I’ll say he gets an everday guy if he can to keep Infante and Conrad as the utility guys where they seemk to be more valuable.

Steve, I hear that. Chipper deserves the best. If he can’t play anymore, I for one would love to see him come back as the manager. He is still young and could give us many years.

First things first, I am truly sorry for Chipper. Being the competitor he is, to sit out a pennant drive has to be truly devastating from a baseball standpoint. Yet, I know that his dugout and clubhouse presence will be invaluable these last seven weeks. A lot has changed since ‘94; a two inch scar, and he’ll be at Dark Star ready to go on the first day.

As I stated yesterday, Conrad is key to all of this. Prado at 3B is the obvious move, with Infante at 2B. Conrad will have to spell both positions effectively, especially for the sake of Infante, who has logged major innings in the past several weeks. Glaus needs to step up and make the Hinske/Glaus 1B platoon work; I truly hope that Bobby realizes the importance of a 1B platoon and not overdo it with Glaus. I believe that the platoon is providing Glaus the much needed rest his knee needs to be effective during the stretch drive.

I believe Conrad is truly important because given Diaz’s recent woes, Cabrera’s mercurial performances, Ankiel’s ineffectiveness, Heyward’s lingering knee AND thumb issues, and McLouth’s lost season, Infante will have to log some significant corner OF time during the stretch. Conrad will have to continue to be a vital big play cog while playing 2B.

Here’s a thought….Chipper has surgery and rejoins team in dugout, tunnel, or clubhouse during games to lend advice and support as the team rallies and makes a run to the post season! Know he would need a few weeks to get over initial surgery and begin rehab but having him there would be HUGE!

Can someone explain the disconnect to me?

We often ask why the Braves don’t bring up Freddie Freeman who has numbers superior to almost all Braves starters at AAA. The semi-official response I keep hearing is “Braves management doesn’t want to ‘ruin’ Freeman by exposing him too soon to the major league level in a pennant race.”

What about Heyward? What about Medlen? What about Minor? They weren’t similarly worried about “scarring” those minor leaguers?

Freddie played 3B in high school, but the consensus now is that he’s too big and not mobile enough for the hot corner on a big-league squad. However, the scouting reports have a lot of praise for his defense at 1B.

I’d venture a guess at a SS/2B type for the speed/quickness factor. That way, Bobby gets the playoff pinch runner he always covets AND a backup to Gonzalez & the 2B spot.

What about Heyward? What about Medlen? What about Minor? They weren’t similarly worried about “scarring” those minor leaguers?

My response would be that there is a disconnect between the peformance of those three you mentioned and Freeman’s up until the point of their call-up.

Heyward dominated the minors at every level and is a true 5-tool player at his position. His approach at the plate and his maturity were extremely advanced at the time of his call-up.

Similarly, Minor dominated AA and AAA before his call-up. He was a polished college pitcher with really not much work to do in the minors except get his feet wet, which he did. And besides, he was only called up due to necessity.

Meds also dominated the minors until his call-up and was again called up out of necessity. He was also 23 at the time of his call-up, two years older than Freeman. Don’t forget his deer-in-the-headlights first few games.

By contrast, Freeman didn’t dominate last year like the other three had. He showed a good batting average and by extension, a good OBP, but didn’t hit for much power at all, partially due to a wrist injury. He didn’t get off to a very good start at all in Gwinnett this season, and the scouting reports demonstrated that he was over-aggressive at the plate and the Braves want to hone his apporach a bit more. His power (and apporach) have come along quite nicely in the recent months, but he hasn’t had a string of domination like the other three had. He’s still making adjustments and honing his game, which leads me to believe he’ll be among the September call-ups unless another injury should befall the club. I would imagine that the Braves want him to reinforce the strides he’s made down there and continue to refine the approach a little more. Don’t forget that he’s still quite young.

I have confidence that he’d do just fine if he was called up now, but there is no shame in erring on the side of caution, particularly in the case of a player you expect to be a cornerstone of your franchise for the next 6 seasons. I know ncscoots disagrees with me, but I feel that more reinforcement in the minor leagues would do the kid good.
