I have no faith in farnsworth….not from what i’ve seen so far and from what he did with the braves in the past.”
In response:
1. In the past, yes, Farnsworth had an awful playoff game against the Astros in 2005, costing us pretty much the Division Series. Going into the post season, he did not have a blown save. So did you trust him when he got us into the playoffs? We very likely would have not gotten there without him.
2. Did you enjoy Chavez when he pitched for us this year? I don’t know about you, but several people hated Chavez and wanted him gone. The Braves complied; they sent him to hell (or Kansas City, as some refer it) and came back with Farnsworth. Seemed at the time a good swap, and I believe it will be proved before the year is out.
3. I don’t like Farnsworth personally as a player, would never be a member of his fan club, but I think he is a solid pickup. Throws hard, will pitch often, will save wear and tear on the bullpen hopefully. Give him a couple of games and let’s see how this turns out. I know 98% of the blog denizens wanted us to make a move. We did; let’s sit back and see how it works out, and maybe just avoid being so reactionary. I know it’s difficult.

Not so. Frenchy gives you two other things very consistently good:
1. Verbose interviews, both in length of interview and total amount of interviews he can give in a given day (not subject to a word count).
2. He has consistently large and very white teeth.
wjones, I’ll answer. I did NOT enjoy Chavez. The Braves have enough major leageu ready relievers that they don’t need either Farnsworth or Chavez. I was upset a little when the Braves let Farnsworth go. Now, he sucks. The Braves probably have 3-4 better options once O’Flaherty comes off the DL.
[Melky] plays a better D than any other Braves outfielder.
What are you people smoking when watch the games? Doughboy makes a nice grab every now and again, but it is only because he has to dive for balls a decent outfielder would be camping under. His +/- over the last 3 seasons is a robust -10.
Would really like to see MLB institute a rule where if you blow a save then you are not eligible for the win. What a joke for Hanson to pitch 7 innings of 2 hit ball leave with the lead and have Wagner blow the save and then get the win.
I just don’t get how someone who’s only 26 and had above-average success for 2 and a half years can suddenly fall off the face of the earth like Francoeur
JoeFan…what does it matter what player is arbitrarily awarded a “win”? All that matters is if the team wins the game. Players don’t win and lose games by themselves.
jeffrey d, the signs were always there that Francoeur wasn’t a polished hitter. The guy had three times as many strikeouts as walks in the minor leagues. A lot of hitters come up like that, but Francoeur just flat out didn’t develop. He’s the same hitter he was in high school, and a high school mentality doesn’t cut it in the big leagues.
Brian – but JF hit .290 in 162 games his first full season, and close to 30 HR in 162 games his second full season. That’s over 1,000 ABs of sustained success.

jeffrey d, sure if you look at batting average, he was good. But according to most other measures, he wasn’t. Over his first three years, which were his best years, he still had just a .782 OPS, which was simply average (100 OPS+). He had a K/BB ratio of over 4. Then his BABIP started falling to normal levels, and he hit the tank. If you don’t have a grasp of the strike zone, you’re not going to survive in the major leagues unless you’ve got some major, major power.
great post Scott from Fairburn – it is amazing how high Francoeur thinks of himself. If he would get his head out of his arse and really get to work on his swing he may be able to turn it around a little. It is that attitude that killed him his last year with the Braves. When presented with going to the minors to work on his swing, he threw a temper tantrum. He did not stay long and did not work out his swing.
I will give props to Nate for taking the minors with class and I hope Nate can refind the magic from 2008
Yep, Francoeur can be a useful piece as a platoon partner. He will be the last person to realize this, but eventually he will. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, but he’s got illusions of grandeur for himself. Who can blame him? High school superstar, first round draft pick, hometown phenom, SI coverboy. He’s getting a wake up call this year with the Mets. He’ll get another when he’s DFA’d after the season.
beekay this blog dosent want reason or truths they pick a whit/hispanic /oriental as there whipping boy then ride it tell they look like total idiots then later they say things like i told ypou all along that chipper/troy uni would turn it around i dont think most have ever actually seen a braves game except for maybe some of the sillys/muts trols lol
I think everybody knows that Nate McLouth’s biggest contribution this season will be the walk-off homer against the Phils in the one-game playoff to determine who wins the division and who goes golfing.
by the way mcfan with hanson on the mound pudge rodriquez couldent throw out me and im in my 60’s but dont bring up the ace’s many and sundry faults hes not an oradined whipping boy
Have to send out props to Salty for getting recalled to the Majors today by the Red Sox. Always wish ex-Braves the best of luck(except against us) when they move on to other places.
Amid all the negatives–the knee injuries, the awful errors, the ridiculous loss in game one and giving away games two and three–one big positive rises to the top. The team showed the mental toughness that almost every fan (including me) did not have. They strapped it on again in those two games and got the runs back.
I’m thinking this is going to be a big factor in our favor in the stretch run.
The fact that JJ, Hudson, Tommy, and Lowe have all looked very strong recently also helps.
LPad, I don’t have rose color glasses and I’m far from superior to other posters. It’s just funny to me how negative some are about a team in 1st. I’d say fans that live pitch to pitch and post things like this team is terrible or Tommy’s about to melt down have no confidence in the team. Makes you look like a idiot that’s all.
Lately, they’ve beenb playing like it – and it should be a concern, for the stress it places upon an already taxed bullpen.
“3:55 pm–We’ve got to have the slowest team in major league baseball.”
They rank 24th in stolen bases in the MLB, and are just 5 SB’s from 27th – that’s a pretty sad commentary on our overall team speed. This is especially painful given our overall lack of power and slugging.
Honestly, CrazyTrade, I agree with LPad. Your one-man kangaroo court act speaks to some kind of inexplicable superiority complex, or at least some sense that you mistakenly think you are above the fray.
I, for one, am not impressed when you trash others. Inane or not, it’s an opinion blog; your sense of fascism as it relates to baseball knowledge and OPINION is not appreciated.
There is no excuse for having 20 errors in 12 games, but I gotta believe not having you’re starting 2B, 3B, and a new SS really took it’s toll this series. When Prado gets back I think things will settle down a lot.
CraZyTRaDeMaN – I’m ecstatic that we’re in first. We got there because of a torrid May & June and our pitching has kept us there along with the late-game heroics, but if you think we don’t have serious issues to address…..
“The Braves have been thriving on balls-to-the-wall, sandpapery, nitty-gritty-dirt-handed, testicular fortitudinal, and omnivigilant and omnipresent resilience.”
Is your point that fans that live pitch to pitch bad fans?
probably that such fans are annoying when they post pitch to pitch.
and yes they are BAD BAD fans. they should be sealed into dark dank caverns en masse and forced to listen to Braves wins the rest of their lives. t’would be hell to them no doubt. BAD!!!, everybody knows that
I really wish some people would stop using Ws to evaluate a pitcher. Would anybody argue that Hanson didn’t deserve a win today with the way he pitched?
Meanwhile, Lowe gives up about 36 runs and still somehow gets the W
Snot – I jokingly noted that right after DOB noted how Hanson retired the first 9 batters that the Astros were 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI since then.
He told me “good reporting.” I don’t think he likes me
tommy certainlky dint over tax the bullpen when he was giving up 10 to 15runs a game there for a month or so it was early enough that bobby only used matinez and chavez in his wasted starts you do relaize those losses are the same as the ones other guys contribute too lossing right?
just noticed Tommy’s line. 7 innings and 2 hits. Those pitch-by-pitch fans were freaking out in the 4th inning earlier
Amazing right. He can be dominant at times and somehow we never notice it on the blog – not like we do Huddy. I guess people trust Huddy or even JJ much more and with Hanson, well idiots are lining up to say he should be traded right now. Hanson seems to especially like pitching to Houston – 3 outings and he’s pitched deep with dominant stuff.
He told me “good reporting.” I don’t think he likes me
You should use more smileys to convey your sarcasm.. no wait..
I think we should all learn from RHR about calling attention to that. I try to skulk around and mention such things in code because quite often these coincidences are eerie with him and I cant help but notice them.
MiaBchBravesFan, thats why no names were attatched to the comments. Besides I could care less what is appreciated or not appericiated by you or others. It’s an opinion blog remember and my rose colar glasses are able to see the game and season as a whole unlike others who seem to wear horse blinders and are only able to see whats going wrong at that exact moment.

In his first full season it was: .260 .293 .449 .742 with 29 homeruns
He was slightly better his second year, though with 19 homeruns…….
Since then, what is there to say. He has been really bad longer than he was marginally good.

Lew,
I think everybody knows that Nate McLouth’s biggest contribution this season will be the walk-off homer against the Phils in the one-game playoff to determine who wins the division and who goes golfing.

With all due respect to Billy Wagner in his last season, Jonny Venters needs to be the closer.
I am sure I am not the first to say it today, or for that matter, the past several weeks.

Restatement 3rd of the Obvious:
Amid all the negatives–the knee injuries, the awful errors, the ridiculous loss in game one and giving away games two and three–one big positive rises to the top. The team showed the mental toughness that almost every fan (including me) did not have. They strapped it on again in those two games and got the runs back.
I’m thinking this is going to be a big factor in our favor in the stretch run.
The fact that JJ, Hudson, Tommy, and Lowe have all looked very strong recently also helps.

I dunno Brian…call me a simpleton, but I’m looking at BA, HR, 2B, RBI, and R and I’d say Francoeur had some pretty good success his first 3 years
2005 (adjusted for 162 games): .300 AVG, 32 HR, 46 2B, 104 RBI, 95 R
2006: .260 AVG, 29 HR, 24 2B, 103 RBI, 83 R
2007: .293, 19 HR, 40 2B, 105 RBI, 84 R
And then….face plant. See ya later Frenchy

“3:03 pm–worst defensive team in the majors?”

Do ya think Cox will have ‘em doing extra defensive drills or working on their clubhouse etiquette?

I really wish some people would stop using Ws to evaluate a pitcher. Would anybody argue that Hanson didn’t deserve a win today with the way he pitched?
Meanwhile, Lowe gives up about 36 runs and still somehow gets the W

tommy certainlky dint over tax the bullpen when he was giving up 10 to 15runs a game there for a month or so it was early enough that bobby only used matinez and chavez in his wasted starts you do relaize those losses are the same as the ones other guys contribute too lossing right?

Amazing right. He can be dominant at times and somehow we never notice it on the blog – not like we do Huddy. I guess people trust Huddy or even JJ much more and with Hanson, well idiots are lining up to say he should be traded right now. Hanson seems to especially like pitching to Houston – 3 outings and he’s pitched deep with dominant stuff.
